Product Description

Emily Murphy was one of Canada's great feminists.A woman of tremendous wit, versatility and compassion, her career included journalism, social reform, politics and the law.

Emily Ferguson was born in Ontario and educated in Toronto where she met her husband, Minister Arthur Murphy.Together they travelled through rural Ontario and industrial England. These travels aroused Emily's social conscience, which she expressed through her famous Janey Canuck books.

When the Murphy's moved to Manitoba and later Edmonton, she continued writing and became involved in reform movements. Her first political efforts resulted in the passage of Alberta's Dower Act of 1911.She would later be appointed a judge in Alberta, making her not only Canada's first woman magistrate, but the first female magistrate in the British Empire.

In 1921, Murphy publicly questioned the law that kept women from the Senate.Women were not considered persons by law, and could therefore not become Senators. Her tireless campaign in this "Persons Case" led to women's legal recognition as "persons" and their eligibility to the Senate.Murphy herself was never appointed to the Senate, but her work in all facets of law and social reform paved the way for generations of Canadian women.

First came Shangri-La. Now: Eluria.

"We are racing down the path of death and destruction, as if whoever reached rock bottom first would receive a crown of laurels instead of thorns. We do not have to continue along this path. There is another way.

"There are teachers who can aid us, men and women from around the world who will come and help us put an end to this insanity, this anger, this hatred, this war. They are holy people who see only the holiness in others, but they will not come unless we ask them.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I propose that we ask them."

Paula Keelor, addressing the National Assembly of Eluria

Will Paula succeed in convincing her countrymen on this war-torn island off the coast of Africa to sign a petition requesting a spiritual intervention? What happens next . . . ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Could have been great
Although this book is flawed in many ways, I enjoyed reading it.Inside this 4 star book is a 5 star book that could have been.A good editor with creative license could have easily fixed it.At 425 pages, this book should have been trimmed, there is plenty of fluff that could have been cut.The ending was silly, took way too many pages, and would have worked much better as a sequel. The ending before the ending was much better.

As a work of entertainment, I enjoyed the story. The romance captured my imagination, the action and adventure drew me in.The characters were well developed, interesting, and diverse.

As a work of enlightenment, many spiritual concepts are presented.Sometimes these seamlessly enhance the story, and at others they are repetitive and preachy. The national acceptance of the spiritual concepts was unrealistic, so suspending belief before reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Messages for All
Heaven on Earth should be read by everyone! This may be an entertaining novel, but more importantly it is an introduction (or a reminder, depending upon where we are) as to how the universe works.

The author uses the story of a fictional island going through a civil war to show us how love (or lack of fear!) can cure the world. She creates interesting characters for whom we care. She also uses fine examples in not only war torn Eluria, but also in the modern day United States. These lessons tell us how our lives can be so much better by using our mind and our intuition in a way that most people don't know is possible, to create a reality that we deserve.

There are times when the story gets a little mushy for me (especially some of the sex scenes), but I don't hesitate to give this book 5 stars because of the lessons and messages it offers.Oh if only EVERYONE would read this book, our world would be a much more special place in which to live while we learn the lessons of this lifetime.

Kudos to Donna N. Murphy!Thank you for writing this very important novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous book
Amazing book that reads like a novel but yet has deep spiritual content, with love and intrigue, anda happy ending!
A message of hope for humanity, perhaps we are growing up and recognizing that war is not a solution to any problem.
Fun, interesting, surprises, uplifting story

5-0 out of 5 stars Stimulating, Engaging, Humorous, and Thought-Provoking
Heaven on Earth is a wonderful novel. There are interesting characters, lots of action, and clever intersecting plots. It comes to life through the realistic, multi-dimensional characters and strikingly vivid descriptions. Having recently read Poisonwood Bible and King Leopold's Ghost, I found an especially strong connection with the island of Eluria. The deeper messages of Heaven on Earth were thoughtfully woven throughout and kept this reader both engaged in a fascinating novel and in reflection of how the messages apply to myself and to the broader universe. I recommend it as an engaging read for anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good needs tear out forms
The book is pretty good, it really helps the small business owner and is oriented towards services. It's short but to the point. It got me moving on my recordkeeping, bank statements are not enough. Now I can tacklequickbooks knowing a little more about the basics, most books are tootechnical. The author does need to make the forms tear out in the back, after I took them out, there is no way to keep them, tear out forms with away to three hole punch them would be great.

Good websites in the back.Only thing is, a namesearch company would be appreciated.

Product Description
Abstract:Background Cardiovascular disease (CVD), CVD-related conditions, and mental health disorders are prevalent in the US workforce. We examined associations between metabolic syndrome (METS), blood pressure (BP), and mental health indicators in 1813 employees (25.4% women; 74.6% men) from a large manufacturing firm. Methods Employees participated in a health screen. Biometric measures were body mass index, waist circumference, BP, and fingerstick determinations of blood lipid-lipoproteins and glucose. Mental health was assessed with 5 self-reported questions regarding anger, depression, anxiety, and family and work stress. Multivariate analysis of covariance tested for differences in BP and mental health indicators in employees (370 employees with METS, and 1443 employees without). Results Participants were primarily middle-aged (44.8 ± 0.3 years), overweight (27.9 ± 0.1 kg/m2) men (n = 1352) and women (n = 461) with a resting BP of 122.5 ± 0.3 mm Hg and 79.8 ± 0.2 mm Hg, respectively. Diastolic BP (DBP) was found to be 5 mm Hg higher in men with METS compared with men who did not have METS. When questioned, men with higher DBP stated that they often experienced anxiety (n = 39; 91.0 ± 2 mm Hg) compared with men who reported they rarely experienced anxiety (n = 112; 86.2 ± 1.9 mm Hg) (P = 0.020). Similarly, systolic BP (SBP) tended to be 4 mm Hg higher in men with METS who stated they often experienced anxiety (n = 39; 138.9 ± 2 mm Hg) compared with men who reported they rarely experienced anxiety (n = 112; 134.5 ± 1.2 mm Hg) (P= 0.119). Diastolic BP tended to be 2 mm Hg higher among men with METS who stated they often experienced anger (n = 117; 89.4 ± 0.9 mm Hg) compared with those who indicated they rarely experienced anger (n = 157; 87.3 ± 0.8 mm Hg) (P = 0.086), and DBP was 3 mm Hg higher in men with METS who reported overwhelming work stress (n = 83; 89.7 ± 1.1 mm Hg) compared with those reporting little work stress (n = 79; 86.6 ± 1.2 mm Hg) (P = 0.176). In contrast, no associations were found between BP and mental health in men without METS, and in women, regardless of the presence or absence of METS (P > 0.05). Conclusions Men with METS who reported higher levels of anxiety, anger, and work stress had higher BP than men without METS, who also reported lower levels of these mental health indicators. The METS appeared to adversely interact with BP and mental health in men at this worksite. Our findings suggest worksite health promotion programs can improve the cardiometabolic and mental health profile of US employees. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A 4th Grade Student Review
Sharon Creech does it again! Granny Torrelli Makes Soup, a heart warming story about friendship. Bailey a boy who is blind and his best friend Rosie get in a fight, a fight about somthing very little, but Bailey makes a big deal about it anyway. Rosie goes home and tells her granny Torrelli about Bailey. When Rosie gets done telling granny Torrelli about Bailey, it reminds her about when she was Rosie's age. Granny Torrelli tells Rosie about her friendship with Pardo, her best friend when she was Rosie's age. I would recomend this book to anyone who might or has had trouble with a friend. So if you want to know if Bailey and Rosie become friends again you'll have to read this book!~Cheeky Monkey

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a Reading Mentor and this was our first book together.
Granny Torrelli Makes Soup is a wonderful book.As an adult, I laughed, felt sad, and really became attached to the story.I am a Reading Mentor to a young girl who is learning to read. This mentoring program is fantastic. She lives on the east coast and I am here in California. We write letters to each other about the books we are reading. This also helps her in learning english. This book was a "chosen" book by the website N2Books.Check it out.You only have to write 5 letters in the whole school year, and it helps our children to learn to read.Your child will love this book, and it has a wonderful meaning to all the mischief when you get to the end.If you read to your child, this is a very cute and touching story about a young girl's relationship with her best friend and how it evolves with the help of her grandmother.IN2Books even has the recipe for Granny Torrelli's soup!

2-0 out of 5 stars Awfully slow
I ordered this book from bargainbooks4u which has an awesome rating and everyone said it was fast. I waited almost a month for the book to arrive. The only thing that was good was their courteous email when I asked them what was taking so long.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Recipe for Love and Laughter
This book by author Sharon Creech makes me laugh and cry!My copy is frayed and I've lost count of how many times I've read it.The book is divided into two parts where 12-year-old Rosie helps her Granny make soup and pasta. But Granny is a tricky old soul because she sprinkles in wisdom as she cooks and Rosie is nourished by more than her food.

Don't be fooled! This book may look short at only 160 pages with chapters that sometimes run less than one page, but its heart and soul are as grand and wide as a hug from Granny Torelli.

5-0 out of 5 stars recipe for delicious reading!
this was one of 5 bks on a list from which my daughter was to choose 1 to read this summer before entering 4th grade; we chose it after reading the Amazon synopses on all bks on the list; the narrator, 12 yr old Rosie, tells the story entirely in dialogue, therefore, it very much lent itself to reading aloud; my daughter & I did this snuggling together @ home & on our beach vacation; it was perfect for a mother & daughter, or grandmother & granddaughter to enjoy together; the main characters cooking together provides an extra layer, through which the story is told, both about Rosie's contemporary situation, & Granny Torelli's parallel one as a young girl who immigrated from Italy to America as a teenager; it was a delight to see into the relationships of this family, & watch Granny Torelli impart her mature wisdom to her grandchild; Rosie learned to step out of herself & see situations from the point of view of others, learned the importance of special relationships in each of our lives, & learned to concentrate on the big picture & not less important details; like soup for a meal, the book is simple & quick, but packed w/flavor to savor; I am not sure why more of the 50+ reviews did not give more stars; give this one a chance; you will not be sorry you came along for the "pasta party" ... Product Description

"Trouble Twins" Dallas and Florida have been shuffled between foster families and the orphanage all their lives. All they want is a loving place to call home, but they are mistrustful that one exists for the likes of them.

Tiller an Sairy are a sweet couple who are each restless for one more big adventure while their bodies are still spry enough to paddle a canoe or climb a mountain. Their own children have grownup and moved away, so they're each looking for someone to help them and keep them company on their last exciting journey.

And Ruby Holler is the beautiful, mysterious place that changes all of their lives forever. When Tiller and Sairy invite Dallas and Florida to stay with them and keep them company on their adventures, the magic of the Holler takes over, and the two kids begin to think that maybe, just maybe, the old folks aren't that bad . . .

Filled with humor, poignancy, cookies and treasure maps, Newbery Medal winner Sharon Creech's Ruby Holler is a delightful book about a special place where it's never to late to love -- or be loved.Amazon.com Review
Having suffered through a string of appalling foster homes (the spitting Cranbepps; scary, toothless Mr. Dreep who locked them in his cellar; and the mean Burgerton boys), 13-year-old orphan Dallas and his twin sister, Florida, have pretty much given up on ever finding a happy home. So when an eccentric older couple enters their lives, providing such adventures as a river expedition, a treasure hunt (of sorts), and a whole lot of remarkable meals: "beat-the-blues broccoli," "anti-cranky crumpets," and "getting-used-to-kids-again stew," the twins take a while to warm up. Florida's language teems with outrageous, telling negativity--everything is "putrid"--and even dreamy Dallas is inclined to bouts of doubt. But warm up they do, to the continual delight of readers of all ages.

Sharon Creech, author of Newbery Medal winner Walk Two Moons and Newbery Honor book The Wanderer, is in fine form with her hilarious yet poignant novel about downtrodden siblings who refuse to be squished altogether. The perfectly happy ending is somewhat predictable, but readers who have fallen in love with each quirky character won't mind a bit. (Ages 8 to 13) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ruined by a Terrible Ending
It was a beautiful story (thus my 3 stars), but the ending was terrible. There were so many loose ends and mysterys, untied and unsolved. The characters are wonderful, the story plot is merorable, the ending STINKS! I wouldn't waste the money, unless you don't mind bad endings. One more thing, THIS IS NOT A 'GIRL' BOOK AT ALL!

5-0 out of 5 stars Birthday Gift
I bought this along with A Dog's Life for a 10-year old girl. She loved it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Typical Creech, but not her best
It would be so easy to dismiss Sharon Creech as a one-trick pony."Bereft child comes to a state of acceptance via literal and spiritual journey" would be an adequate summary of several of her novels.Yet somehow she never gets boring. Her meditations on the relationship of our life-stories and the stories we live by are still moving and insightful. Her eccentric old couples, bound together by a love of the simplest and yet profoundest sort, never lose the power to touch our hearts.

"Ruby Holler" is standard Creech fare, with a Dickensian twist.Thirteen-year-old twins Dallas and Florida were abandoned as infants and have been raised in the Boxton Creek Home for Children, a miserable cesspool of abuse and neglect, which the twins have managed to escape only through short-term residence in a variety of thoroughly unsuitable foster homes.Dallas and Florida have come to think of themselves as their caretakes do - trouble. When a kind old couple take them in for the summer, the youngsters are sure there must be a catch.Surely they're going to be put to hard labor, or made to sleep in a pigpen, or at least beaten if they do something they shouldn't . . . right?

The ending is fairly predictable, and there was little of the sense of a slowly, deliciously unfolding mystery that I enjoyed in "Walk Two Moons" and "The Wanderer."But this is a pleasant tale nonetheless.Dallas and Florida are endearing, and it's positively wounding how little they expect out of life.As usual, Creech creates a cast of quirky characters that add humor and interest to the story.

Unfortunately, this wasn't quite the novel it could have been.Dallas and Florida were ostensibly taken in by this couple to be their travelling companions on two separate vacations, but Creech never really explains why these vacations mean so much to them in the first place, or why, if they're unwilling to travel together, they feel the need to take along a couple of orphans they've never met.A few chapters that delve into the foibles and motivations of the couple that run the Boxton Creek Home add humor and advance a major subplot, but ultimately fall short and feel somewhat disjointed: they render the villains just a bit too human for stock characters, and not human enough to touch us as fully fleshed literary creations.

This was a pleasant read, but hardly Creech's best. The author's fans will enjoy it, as will those who like their fiction light and fun but not shallow. If you want to see what Creech is really capable of, however, check out "The Wanderer" or "Walk Two Moons" instead.

One Fifth Avenue, the Art Deco beauty towering over one of Manhattan's oldest and most historically hip neighborhoods, is a one-of-a-kind address, the sort of building you have to earn your way into--one way or another. For the women in Candace Bushnell's new novel, One Fifth Avenue, this edifice is essential to the lives they've carefully established--or hope to establish. From the hedge fund king's wife to the aging gossip columnist to the free-spirited actress (a recent refugee from L.A.), each person's game plan for a rich life comes together under the soaring roof of this landmark building.

Acutely observed and mercilessly witty, One Fifth Avenue is a modern-day story of old and new money, that same combustible mix that Edith Wharton mastered in her novels about New York's Gilded Age and F. Scott Fitzgerald illuminated in his Jazz Age tales. Many decades later, Bushnell's New Yorkers suffer the same passions as those fictional Manhattanites from eras past: They thirst for power, for social prominence, and for marriages that are successful--at least to the public eye. But Bushnell is an original, and One Fifth Avenue is so fresh that it reads as if sexual politics, real estate theft, and fortunes lost in a day have never happened before.

From Sex and the City through four successive novels, Bushnell has revealed a gift for tapping into the zeitgeist of any New York minute and, as one critic put it, staying uncannily "just the slightest bit ahead of the curve." And with each book, she has deepened her range, but with a light touch that makes her complex literary accomplishments look easy. Her stories progress so nimbly and ring so true that it can seem as if anyone might write them--when, in fact, no one writes novels quite like Candace Bushnell. Fortunately for us, with One Fifth Avenue, she has done it again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining
That book reviewers, no matter how mediocre and sycophantic, would dare compare Candace Bushnell to Edith Wharton or Jane Austen illustrates how mediocre and lame our society has become."Sex and the City" had as much imagination and intellect as an episode of "Friends" -- a banal and superficial rendering of the glamour and vanity of a city by a gossip columnist who has experienced the glamour and vanity for decades.Unbelievably, "Lipstick Jungle" was even more derivative than the unbearably derivative "Sex and the City." "One Fifth Avenue" is Candace Bushnell's best work (which is not saying much), and it is an entertaining read.

One Fifth Avenue is a building, but more than a building it's an organism in which its equilibrium may well be where its constituent parts argue all the time but when the organism is threatened all unite together to ensure its survival. The building's constituents are Bourgeois Bohemians or "Bobos" (to use David Brooks' term), intellectuals with a little money and intellect and too much ego and snobbery. The story begins when the organism's heart -- a major New York socialite and philanthropist -- dies, and is replaced by Paul Rice, a billionaire hedge fund manager who represents the "new money":outrageously rich, egotistical, ambitious. That's all fine to long-term One Fifth Avenue residents but he's also crass, vulgar, and violent, and that's not acceptable. So the feuding constituents band together to eject this virus.

This is the main thread of the novel, but Candace Bushnell paints a rich tapestry."One Fifth Avenue" is a derivative version of "Bonfine of the Vanities," and is similar to "The Emperor's Children.""One Fifth Avenue" captures the ego, the vanity, the ambition, and the crassness of New Yorkers (there are no sympathetic characters in this book), and if "The Emperor's Children" is about the vital and dynamic confusion and chaos, ambiguity and ambivalence that is Manhattan before 9/11, then "One Fifth Avenue" captures life well after 9/11 when Manhattan has reverted to its insanely self-centered and shamelessly striving self.

Why this book is so compelling is because Candance Bushnell has as much imagination as a Central Park acorn.(She's re-named [...] as [...], for pete's sake.)So what she writes is a fairly accurate and honest picture of her crowd, the elite of a city that is the center of the universe. There never has been a city quite like Manhattan, and its particular fusion and confusion of money, power, sex, and culture.

If there were no Manhattan there certainly would be no Candace Bushnell -- it's the address that gives the building its vitality and importance, and it's the address that gives this book its life and purpose.Candace Bushnell just happens to be sitting where everyone is watching.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly repulsive
This book is full of unpleasant, unlikeable characters with stupid names who are all doing nasty things to one another. I found nothing to enjoy in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for summer
What a wonderful, light beach read.I picked the book up at my company's lending library and so happy i decided to read it.
There are a lot of characters and it takes a while to introduce everyone and expand on their background and purpose, but it is well worth the wait. The stories and the characters are interesting, some likeable and some are not.Certain descriptions and events are a bit exaggerated but it is a work of fiction, so nothing inappropriate there.

I recommend this book as a means of escaping you reality and getting pulled into the craziness and chaos that is New York.Keep in mind, this is a work of fiction so not everything is going to make sense or seem realistic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise
After reading 4 Blondes, I didn't expect much out of One Fifth Avenue. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The book got interesting after about 100 pages and I couldn't put it down. I liked that it wasn't as fluffy as typical chick lit, which made the characters and storyline more believable. The plot, twists and turns, and the interweaving of characters were enjoyable. I look forward to reading more from Candace Bushnell.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining despite a slow start.
I have never read Candace Bushnell before, nor have I ever seen an episode of Sex and The City, despite being a woman in the demographic it appeals to.It just never grabbed me, so I have no prior knowledge of Ms Bushnell's work.I picked up a copy of One Fifth Avenue from a friend, and the blurb on the back sounded promising, so I decided to read it.

I agree with other reviewers that the novel was slow to start and took a bit too long to establish itself. The first 100 pages are not great and I almost gave up on it, but decided to battle through what was clearly an attempt to introduce each character's back story to set the scene.I'm glad I continued, as the book turned out to be thoroughly entertaining, so much so that I am going to try and read Ms Bushnell's other novels. There is something delicious about reading about the mores and foibles of the Manhattan monied class, and there are some very memorable characters here. The books is great holiday reading, a guilty pleasure that is loads of fun.Highly recommended! ...
