Excerpt: Lou Grant is a fictional character played by Edward Asner in two television series produced by MTM Enterprises for CBS. The first was Mary Tyler Moore (1970-1977), in which the character was the news director at the fictional television station, WJM-TV. A spinoff series, simply entitled Lou Grant (1977-1982), featured the character as city editor of the fictional Los Angeles Tribune. Unusually, the two shows in which the Grant character features are in completely different genres. The Mary Tyler Moore Show was a half-hour-long light-hearted situation comedy while Lou Grant was an hour-long serious dramatic series which frequently engaged in social commentary. Although the setting of The Mary Tyler Moore Show might have implied that he was a native Minnesotan, Lou Grant in fact established that he was born in the fictional town of Goshen, Michigan. His grandfather was a pharmacist. At some point in his youth and early adulthood he developed a life-long affection for westerns, particularly those starring John Wayne. In high school, he was a tackle for his school's football team. Soon after high school, he married Edie MacKenzie (Priscilla Morrill), at an age young enough to have four grandchildren before he turned 50. After marriage, he became a combatant in World War II. He served in both the Pacific and European Theatres. At one point, he was a sergeant in the Pacific-based 2nd Marine Division. During another phase of his wartime service, he was injured by a grenade in France, the last remnants of which were only removed in his late 40s. He was...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=170943 ... Chapters: The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 72. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Mary Tyler Moore Show (also known as Mary Tyler Moore as seen in the opening titles) is an American television sitcom created by James L. Brooks and Allan Burns that aired on CBS from September 19, 1970 to March 19, 1977. The program was a television breakthrough, with the first never-married, independent career woman as the central character: As Mary Richards, a single woman in her thirties, Moore presented a character different from other single TV women of the time. She was not widowed or divorced or seeking a man to support her. It has also been cited as "one of the most acclaimed television programs ever produced" in US television history. Over a seven-year period, it received high praise from critics and Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series three years in a row (1975, 1976, and 1977). The show continued to be honored long after the final episode aired. In 2003, USA Today called it "one of the best shows ever to air on TV". In 1997, TV Guide selected a Mary Tyler Moore Show episode as the best TV episode ever, and, in 1999, Entertainment Weekly picked Mary's hat toss in the opening credits as television's second greatest moment. Mary Richards (Moore) is a single woman who, at age 30, moves to Minneapolis after breaking off an engagement with her boyfriend of two years. She applies for a secretarial job at TV station WJM-TV, only to find it has already been filled. To her surprise, she is offered the position of associate producer for the station's Six O'Clock News (which, though it has a more prestigious title, pays $10 a week less than the job she had originally sought). At work, she befriends her tough-but-lovable boss Lou Grant (played by Edward Asner); sympath...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=78217 ... Read more

Chapters: The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, the Mary Tyler Moore Show, Little House on the Prairie, Coach, Fillmore!, Happy Town, Little House on the Prairie, Beyond the Prairie: the True Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder, Laurel Avenue. Excerpt:Beyond the Prairie: The True Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder Beyond the Prairie: The True Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder and its sequel, Beyond the Prairie, Part 2: The True Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder , are television films which were presented in two parts, the first in 2000, and the second in 2002, which presented episodes from the later books in the Little House on the Prairie series (from The Long Winter to The First Four Years ). Cast Awards Reception Despite the title, the miniseries was criticized for its significant deviations not only from Laura Ingalls Wilder's books, but the known facts of her life. Some incidents portrayed did occur, but not at the time during which the series is set, while others are entirely fictional. The appearance of characters differs from their descriptions in the books. There are also anachronisms in hairstyles, costuming, and the behavior of the characters.
