5-0 out of 5 stars Testimony of a servant's submission to the power of God.
When I first heard that the new Christ Is My Life Book was going to be in an interview format, I was not expecting it to be very long. I was surprised to find that the book was actually 267 pages with 152 questions covering topics such as Fr. Maciel's childhood and call to the priesthood, the Legion of Christ, Regnum Christi, the Catholic Church, and the world of today and tomorrow.

Although the book gives ample attention to explaining the role of the Legionaries of Christ and Regnum Christi in the springtime of evangelization (excellent for those who are curious or members themselves,) one certainly doesn't need to be affiliated with either to thoroughly enjoy this book. It is filled with spiritual wisdom and practical advice that any Catholic trying to live a holy and faithful life could benefit from. It is also a beautiful and powerful example of God's desire to use lowly people to bring about great works for the Church.

Granted there will always be hecklers who claim the book is nothing more than a propaganda piece - but that is to be expected. If Christ Himself was ridiculed and maligned, a servant of God should expect no less.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book about an Amazing Man
The story of Fr. Maciel and The Legion of Christ is inspiring and beautiful. Despite trial and long odds, faithfulness and courage triumph. Fr. Maciel's reflections on his childhood, his vocation and the growth of The Legion provide great insight into the future of the Church. Untiring determination mixed with a strong faith in the Church's timeless teachings, rooted in love of Christ is a powerful combination.

1-0 out of 5 stars More of the same
This is sadly more of the same rehash of the myth of Marcial Maciel, accuse pederast.

The Legion of Christ has just announced on their website that a new book, Christ is My Life, which purports to be an interview with Marcial Maciel is "...far and away the fastest-selling book in the Catholic market today"

This claim is based on the fact that Sophia Institute Press has reportedly sold 21,000 copies of the book in just 9 days. The number is deceiving. The truth of this matter is that, upon contacting Sophia to print this book, the Legion of Christ ordered and bought 16,000 copies for itself. If 21,000 are sold, that means that only 5,000 others have been sold through Sophia Institute Press itself. The Legion, however, asserts that: "In just nine days, Sophia Institute Press has sold 21,000 copies of Christ is My Life, its 304-page interview with 83-year-old Father Marcial Maciel, LC, the founder and director of the Legionaries of Christ." This is a tactic widely used in the past by groups like the Scientologists, who published a book called Dianetics, bought up thousands of copies in-house, and thus boosted the groups popularity with the public through the contrived multiple printings. The remainder have been bought by families of Legionaries, and Regnum Christi members.

The 'interview' itself is also a sham, since the alleged interviewer, Jesus Colina, is not an independent journalist as they claim, but a Legionary employee and RC member who heads up their news organization called Zenit. He received the material for the publication from the Legionary superiors as quotes from the letters of the Legionaries' founder, most of which are not even authored by Maciel himself. His ghost writers have included many Legionaries over the years.

There was no need to make such bold sales assertions, which only reveal the duplicity of the marketing techniques of this group. When will the Legion of Christ simply tell the truth about matters such as this?

Their credibility is very much at stake here.

As for the content of the book, how much of this grandstanding and false pietism can we take? The pretensions are overwhelming. The truth is sadly absent about Marcial Maciel, the Legion of Christ and the Regnum Christi. This is a disservice to the Chruch and her work to bring souls to Christ. It is a narcisitic attempt to bring people, resources and money to Marcial Maciel. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Native Texas Babies or Visitors
I bought this book before my child was born. It's one of my favorites and one of his. We also have "Little Tex's ABCs." Both are great books. He is a sixth generation native Texan, so we want to make him proud of his heritage. What better way to get started? I am hoping that this is only the beginning of the "Little Tex" series. How about a "Little Tex" counting book next?

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Cute and Fun!
My 4 year old and 1 year old sons love this book. The thick interactive pages are informative, safe, keeps their attention, and they leave talking about it. My 4 year old sometimes acts like Little Tex! Much better than acting out a Power Ranger! Buy it, your kids will love it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Rresource for the Newly Diagnosed
Living With Hepatitis C: Everything You Need to Know (Your Personal Health) by Jenny Heathcote, et al. This is a very succinct and thorough guide to hepatitis C. It describes everything an HCV-positive individual needs to know about hepatitis C, from prevention to treatment. It contains case studies, illustrations, and an excellent resource guide. From her personal experience, Dr. Heathcote provides an excellent tool for people who are newly diagnosed with hepatitis C. Unlike many of the other books available, this one is concise and not overwhelming for people seeking simple and straightforward answers. It discusses both medical and practical aspects of living with hepatitis C. Subjects include the various types of hepatitis and how they differ, how hepatitis C affects the liver, the tests and procedures that are performed in order to effectively diagnose hepatitis C, an overview of the treatments available, and the medications that are used for treatment. In addition, the book includes a section on hepatitis C in children and during pregnancy, as well as the process an HCV-positive individual will go through if a liver transplant is necessary. The author very effectively covers sensitive areas, including a candid discussion on how drinking and other lifestyle decisions affect the course of the disease. In summary, this is a very comprehensive and to-the-point guide to hepatitis C. It is an excellent tool for people newly diagnosed with HCV and covers all the necessary subject areas with practical tools and suggestions. Highly Recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Bunuel
This is absolutely essential reading for fans of the enigmatic and reclusive Bunuel, whose career in motion pictures spanned 50 years. He is interviewed, and at times interrogated, by his friends, allowing the discussion to veer into his personal life and various obsessions with good humor and mutual understanding. The verbal sparring is a joy to observe.

The book has been compiled in a chronological order and it will give you a good sample of his long life, from his friendship with the key Surrealists like Salvador Dali, to his amusing anecdotes of Hollywood. An easy and entertaining introduction to the life and art of a complex genius, and a fantastic guide to each of his film -- Criterion has reprinted some of these as supplements to their new DVD editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Look At A True Genius Of The Cinema.
This is probably the best collection of interviews with a filmmaker ever published. It is not some retread to "My Last Sigh" but a great read full of insight, intelligence, that typical Buñuel style and of course, a study of great cinema. It's a fascinating book, where Buñuel discusses his life and works and how he came to be inspired to make some of his greatest films like "Un Chien Andalou," "Viridiana" and "That Obscure Object Of Desire." And it's also great to read as Buñuel discusses his philosophies of life and surrealism. The interviewers create a great conversation with a genius and take us into his mind. Some of the classic works of the cinema are dissected here in intricate detail and Buñuel offers some sly humor to the discussions. A surprise is that you realize that Buñuel's personal life is as interesting, fascinating and incredibile as his movies. Some people may not want to take a look at this book after reading "My Last Sigh," thinking it's basically the same stuff, well, it's not. Luis Buñuel was a very complex man in his thinking and this book gives us a good tour of the man. A must for lovers of great cinema and fans of surrealism and Buñuel. Lorca, Dalí, and the surrealists are all discussed here, even the gruesome, fatal fates of the two actors of "Un Chien Andalou." Great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars correspondencia amorosa
... 5-0 out of 5 stars A most intriguing study
Las Colinas: The Inside Story Of America's Premier Urban Development is the true story of an incredible private community. Since over 1000 corporations reside in Las Colinas, many people mistakenly believe that it is a city. Las Colinas was in fact financed in the 1970s by millionaire Texas rancher Ben H. Carpenter. The real estate crash of 1986 left the rancher eventually evicted from his former property. The history of Las Colinas is filled with turbulence, debt, an overburdened utility district, and unusual features galore. A most intriguing study and a highly recommended addition to academic and community library 20th Century American history and urban development studies reading lists and reference collections.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing attention to detail
I live in Las Colinas and it is, indeed, a unique community. I enjoyed learning the 'ins and outs' of how it was created and how it operates today. I have wondered many times about the elevated tramway but I've never used it because it makes no sense to me. Mr. Bourland's attention to detail and persistence in researching this topic are amazing. I look at my community through different, educated eyes now. A very interesting and enlightening book - Thank you. ... Read more
