Product Description
This title presents an incredible story of triumph over evil in the modern world. It is a moving account of what a mother's love for her child can achieve even when the odds are stacked against them both. It is a horrifying first-hand account of a survivor of human trafficking in the 21st-century. It is a portrayal of the illegal and sordid underworld of trafficking in human organs. Radhika's Story - A seemingly innocent sip of Coca-Cola, drunk by a starving and desperately thirsty 14-year-old girl led to the first of Radhika Pariyar's human trafficking experiences. Drugged, Radhika woke up hours later, in great pain, only to discover that her kidney had been removed and sold to the highest bidder. Radhika was married by force but tried to make the best of her situation. She had a much-loved son, but Rohan's birth signified the next harrowing episode in Radhika's life - she was trafficked again. Living in India, separated from her son and forced to have sex with up to 25 men a day, Radhika refused to accept her lot.Desperate to be reunited with her child, she fought against the odds, finding the strength to escape her horrific life and rescue her son and finally find sanctuary in a refuge set up to help survivors of trafficking. Journalist Sharon Hendry tells Radhika's horrifying but incredibly inspiring story. She also highlights the pervasive nature of human trafficking in the 21st century. The proceeds from the book will go to Maiti, the charity that helped Radhika and which continues to help survivors of trafficking. This title is suitable for: fans of true crime; anyone interested in inspirational stories of triumph over adversity; and, anyone interested in globalization and human trafficking. ... Read more

Specially Arranged For Audio, the Legendary British Comedy Rides Again, Darling!

The sitcom that took England--and the world--by storm, Absolutely Fabulousdeveloped out of a French and Saunders sketch called "Mother and Daughter." The show contained elements that the audience could identify with: the strong bond of best friends, drinking, and weight control.

The audio program includes the following episodes:

Birthday--It's Edina's 40th birthday and she's at her most vitriolic. To mark the catastrophic occasion, Saffron organizes a boring old family lunch. But maybe Edina's two ex-husbands will liven things up a bit.

Fat--Prepare the liposuction tables, Edina's on a diet. Forget the pills, chanting, and mung beans--they're not enough! There's only one thing for it--she'll have to exercise....

Death--The death of Edina's father leaves her struggling with the idea of her own mortality--so she decides to build up a collection of modern art for posterity.

Happy New Year--Patsy's long-lost sister makes a surprise visit for the New Year.

Presented on 2 CDs by a full cast, starring the hilarious TV characters! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Scripts to Brilliant Writing
Absolutely Fabulous (1992), released in the US (1994), offers viewers a sharp and satirical view of two women who have left an indelible-lipstick-smeared mark on popular culture. Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders), Boomer-age mother with a strong penchant for excess, enjoys a friendship with her partner-in-crime, Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley), a rapidly-aging blonde who considers sexual promiscuity an ongoing contact sport. She is Samantha Jones' older English cousin.

The cast includes Saffron (Julia Sawalha), Edina's overly-restrained daughter, who finds herself frustrated with her mother at every turn, largely because Edina cannot foresee the consequences to her self-indulgent choices. What makes Absolutely Fabulous enjoyable are the antics which Edina and Patsy engage in, often to their detriment, which in this show, is played down carefully. Included among the other characters: Bubble (Jane Horrocks), Edina's incompetent secretary, who cannot organize much less offer structure to Edina's already chaotic existence. Bubble is "bubble-headed" and is played for laughs, largely for her quirky and periodic turns of character. For example, she cannot remember to inform Edina of an impending deadline in the third episode, "France", but she manages to translate perfectly what the Frenchman says to them when he tries to explain that Edina and Patsy have mistakenly assumed lodgings in the wrong place.

This first volume features the complete scripts for each of the six episodes from the first season including: "Fashion", "Fat", "France", "Iso Tank", "Birthday", and "Magazine". The book also includes 16 pages of full-color inserts taken from episodes of the show.

Absolutely Fabulous fans will enjoy reading the brilliant writing which reflects the superior intellect that both Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French, the respective creators, bring to the comedy table. Viewers, when enjoying this very fine comedy, must also remember that it is satire. By its definition, satire not only seeks to make known what it criticizes but it also invites reform. To watch Absolutely Fabulous and to enjoy it for its high-spiritedness is in itself, a great pleasure. But Saunders and French have also suggested that the excesses of these two women, who have too often, known little self-restraint might have to face genuine consequences sooner or later.

In some ways, what makes Absolutely Fabulous enjoyable is the delightful friendship these women share with one another. Occasionally, we are offered glimpses into the past and in doing so, we see how one's childhood affected who these women became. In "Magazine", a brief flashback offers a comedic yet telling sequence featuring Patsy's mother (Eleanor Bron) who was herself, a selfish, highly-libidinous woman prone to resent any sexual competition, particularly from her daughter. When we flash ahead to a retirement home, Patsy's mother is aged and incredibly bitter. Next to her mother, sits a resentful Patsy, complete with 80s hairdo, who listens to a riotously funny if pitch-perfect speech in which her mother fulminates that she has been reduced to reading: "two Barbara Cartlands a month..." What we sometimes miss in watching the show, due to its fever-pitched speed in delivery, we can enjoy a bit more in reading and re-reading these very fine scripts which should delight any fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hilarious
Hello,

Jennifer Saunders is a comedy genius and this has to be one of her best works to date. It reveals the completely obnoxious side of the quick fix 80's and 90's, with mood shifts that go from bizarre machinations to impulsive, thoughtless and wreckless PR.

Contemporary British comedy at its excruciatingly exacting best.

Regards,

Martyn R Jones

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant example of comedy writing
Jennifer Saunders is a comedienne loved all over the world for her dead-on characterizations & biting satire. If you have seen the television show "Absolutely Fabulous," you know how Saunders can inhabit a character and make it her own.Now with this and her follow-up "Absolutely Fabulous 2," you will see just what a wonderful and inspired writer she is. The rapid-fire wit of her writing jumps from the page straight into your psyche. Hilarious characters, well written, and later well performed in the television series. This is a must for any "AbFab" fan, but I also highly recommend it to anyone who loves comedy or likes to read tight, smart & funny character plays.

5-0 out of 5 stars Noel Coward Plays
I was interested in obtaining the play Blithe Spirit, but was delighted to also see two other Coward plays included. Now if I can just audition and get the part of Madam Arcati, I did it in the 80's now I don't have to draw the wrinkles on my face and the british accent is genuine!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reading of a very funny play
Noel Coward called "Blithe Spirit" an "improbable farce." Well, supernatural it is, as you well know if you saw that superb film made many years ago with Rex Harrison as the poor husband, now into his second and apparently not ideal marriage, who winds up hosting the ghost of his first wife when he sets up a séance to get some material for a book.

I will not reveal any more of this delicious plot other than that the Coward wit is intact and his views of marriage are not changed from those in "Private Lives."But now we have the chance to hear it again and again as an excellent audio-version issued by Naxos on two CDs (NA226312) or on two cassettes (NA226314). Actually I should have said 1.5 cassettes since Naxos decided to keep each of the three acts on a single side, leaving the second side of the second tape simply blank.

Although much of the fun comes from the sight gags of things floating in the air and characters on stage being unable to see the ghost(s), enough of the situation comes across in this well-produced recording. We have as the husband Colin Redgrave (a familiar face from many a Masterpiece Theatre), Kika Markham as the new wife Ruth, and Thelma Ruby as the bumbling but still authentic medium Madame Arcati.

The unwelcome ghost Elvira is played by the lush-voiced Joanna Lumley, best known today as the never quite sober Patsy on "Absolutely Fabulous" and best known several years ago as the battling Purdy on "The New Avengers."

A very funny play done to perfection and even funnier with recordings of the author himself singing some of his lyrics between the scenes. The last one is especially appropriate, so look for it. ... Read more

Product Description

Jane Austen’s novels have proved to be enduring favorites in every medium in which they appear, whether books or movies, comic books or TV mini-series. Works like Emma, Persuasion, and Pride and Prejudice present incomparable portraits of marriageable but discriminating young women, the scoundrels and gentlemen who entrance and confound them, their scheming mothers and hapless fathers — all set in the well-mannered world of early 19th-century British country life. With this collection, fans can enjoy the books anew in audio format. Joanna Lumley, whose Patsy made Absolutely Fabulous a cult hit, aptly showcases the mordant wit of Pride and Prejudice. Anna Massey brings character and vigor to her dramatizations of Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, and Northanger Abbey. Belinda Lang offers a stylish interpretation of Emma, while Harriet Walter evokes Austen in a different mode in her reading of the little-known novella, The Watsons. Musical backgrounds enhance the listener's experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars These Recordings are Abridged
These recordings are abridged. I have a reading of Emma on 11 CDs. This collection does it in 2. This is a drawback, and it is not evident from the description. The box only mentions it on the back at the lower left although it would be evident from the CD count, I suppose. On the plus side the set includes an unabridged reading of The Watsons, and a CD of readings of Jane Austen's letters, both of which I have not seen elsewhere available in audio.I was looking for Sense and Sensibility on CD. It is her, abridged, in a 2 CD set, also. I'm torn between opening the box, i.e. accepting the item, for the Watsons and Letters, and to hold my S&S desires until I can find a full version; and sending it back. Watch for a further review if I open the box.

Ok, I did open it and listened to the Watsons (unabridged), Sense & Sensibility (abridged) and Pride and Prejudice (abridged). Here's the deal: You don't read Jane Austen for the plot. You read it because of Jane Austen's writing. You listen to it for the same reason. This means there is nothing at all to recommend an abridged version. Here's the problem in a nutshell. At one point in Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet regrets all of the saucy speeches she ever made to Mr. Darcy. We regret them too, but for a different reason. She wishes Mr. Darcy had never heard them. Had he been listening to the abridged version, he never would have heard them because they were all cut out.Parts of the abridgement make no sense at all. When Ms. Bingley says Elizabeth is one of those women who curry favor with men by running down members of her own sex in the abridged version, this makes no sense whatever because we have not heard the conversation that led it to it in the novel.

I do not recommend buying this set at all. Had I not opened it, I would return it. There is no point in an abridged Jane Austen. That said, I note this is the only audio version of Sense & Sensibility I can find, except the Project Guttenberg rendition which seems to have each chapter read by a diffent volunteer - a reading that is not up to the performance standard of the professional sets.It is also the only audio version of the Watsons, and the excerpts from what seem to be the early practice sessions of a young Jane for an epistolary novel. These are presented as leters by Jane Austen, but I don't believe that is accurate in the sense ofletters being written to someone else. These are letters which practice writing on a brief topic, and they have interesting echoes in her published novels. They are not the equal of any of the writing in the novels, however.

I should probably give this set No Stars, but I don't think that's an option. So, 1 star for the otherwise unavailable material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jane Austen at her best
Who can fault a production of Jane Austen's seven best books for almost free?Nice layout, easy to read.A "go to list of books" should be on the menu of all book collections such as this.In this book you have to "go to the beginning" and then click three pages forward to get to the list.As in all Kindle books I've read, the "Location" numbers at the bottom of the page have no meaning to the user. It would be nice to have these numbers bear some relationship with relative location in the book, especially in a collection of books stored as a single "book."

4-0 out of 5 stars Kindle-Specific Review - AGB
This is a Kindle-specific review by AGB.

Value for money: excellent bargain set of the six great Austen novels, plus the juvenile "Lady Susan".There are some Kindle-specific faults that readers will want to beware (though fewer than in other competing Complete Sets).

Presentation and Format: The pages display cleanly, with the text set fully justified (as Kindle definitely prefers). Two quibbles. First, the Chapter Lists referred to below are set to the left margin and can be difficult to select with the Kindle trackwheel and silver bar way over to the right (temporarily increasing the font size to pick a chapter is a work-round).Second, emphasis within the text that would usually be italicized has been poorly done:"Mr. Bennet, how _can_ you abuse your own children.....".Ugh!

Cover etc.: there's a simple cover for the whole set, but no covers for the individual novels.

Opening Linked Table of Contents: there is a proper opening linked ToC and - most usefully - each novel commences with a list of links to the individual chapters.
(Note: the "Linked ToC" enables you skip to predetermined points in the file - individual books, chapter openings etc.Without a good one, a long or very technical work can be tiresome to navigate on the Kindle.)

Metadata
("Metadata" refers to some hidden coding that publishers insert into the text file to enable Kindle to list and display correctly the essentials of the book - Author, Title etc. Kindle owners are able to correct indexing errors - which are very, very common - via a 3rd party software program called "Mobi2Mobi", but is both annoying and time-consuming to have to do so. )

Author: this is set incorrectly, and will Author Index the book under "J" for Jane not "A" for Austen.
(General Note: although Kindle displays author names in the form "Bram Stoker", in order for him to be positioned in the Kindle Author List under "S" for Stoker rather than "B" for Bram, the Metadata must be set by the publisher in the form "Stoker, Bram".)

Title: displays and indexes properly.
(General Note: although Kindle knows to ignore an opening "The" in a title, it simply takes the first proper word in the metadata title to index the book.Publishers often include words - e.g. "World's Classics:... " - before the proper title of the book that lead Kindle to place it misleadingly in your displayed Title List.)

Search: works properly.
Lookup: works properly.
(General Note: for reasons I don't yet quite understand, a number of Kindle format books - usually at the less expensive end of the range - don't allow Search or Lookup to work properly.)

Product Description
When Catherine Morland is launched into the politics and pitfalls of the Bath social season she behaves with the cheerful open-mindedness. This title is a satire of Gothic melodrama.Amazon.com Review
Though Northanger Abbey is one of Jane Austen's earliest novels, itwas not published until after her death--well after she'd established herreputation with works such as Pride andPrejudice, Emma, andSense andSensibility. Of all her novels, this one is the most explicitlyliterary in that it is primarily concerned with books and with readers. Init, Austen skewers the novelistic excesses of her day made popular in such18th-century Gothic potboilers as Ann Radcliffe's TheMysteries of Udolpho. Decrepit castles, locked rooms, mysteriouschests, cryptic notes, and tyrannical fathers all figure into NorthangerAbbey, but with a decidedly satirical twist. Consider Austen'sintroduction of her heroine: we are told on the very first page that "noone who had ever seen Catherine Morland in her infancy, would have supposedher born to be an heroine." The author goes on to explain that MissMorland's father is a clergyman with "a considerable independence, besidestwo good livings--and he was not in the least addicted to locking up hisdaughters." Furthermore, her mother does not die giving birth toher, and Catherine herself, far from engaging in "the more heroicenjoyments of infancy, nursing a dormouse, feeding a canary-bird, orwatering a rose-bush" vastly prefers playing cricket with her brothers toany girlish pastimes.

Catherine grows up to be a passably pretty girl and is invited to spend afew weeks in Bath with a family friend. While there she meets Henry Tilneyand his sister Eleanor, who invite her to visit their family estate,Northanger Abbey. Once there, Austen amuses herself and us as Catherine, agreat reader of Gothic romances, allows her imagination to run wild, finding dreadful portents in the most wonderfully prosaic events. ButAusten is after something more than mere parody; she uses her rapier wit tomock not only the essential silliness of "horrid" novels, but to expose theeven more horrid workings of polite society, for nothing Catherine imaginescould possibly rival the hypocrisy she experiences at the hands of hersupposed friends. In many respects Northanger Abbey is the mostlighthearted of Jane Austen's novels, yet at its core is a serious, unsentimental commentary on love and marriage, 19th-century British style.--Alix Wilber ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Amusing Satire, killed by last section
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JML7YC/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_img

This initially funny, then sad, then silly novel begins in one tone: Catherine is a silly girl who reads too many Gothic novels and and takes her ideas of life from them. As the fourth of ten children, she is overjoyed when a childless couple invite her to accompany them for a six-week stay at a wpa. There she makes several friends in succession, in a way such hat she comes to realize that real life doesn't copy Gothic romances quite as much as she thought. When she is invited for a three-week, then indefinite, stay at the Tilney household of Northanger Abbey, her reading causes her to leap to unwarranted conclusions from which she is yanked by the uncompromising sensibility of Henry Tilney.

As she proceeds toward mental normality, away from the constant influence of the novels, she is totally startled when the General, Henry's father, who had appeared to be highly in favor of a marriage between Catherine and Henry, orders her sent home instantly with his strong disapproval. He is not even gutsy enough to tell her himself, but sends her friend, his daughter Eleanor, to tell her. It is due only to Eleanor's prudence that Catherine even has the money with which to get home by stagecoach.

Still stunned, she is pulled out of the depths of depression by a visit from Henry, who tells her why his father had behaved so badly and assures her that he still wants to marry her. Her parents agree to the marriage only on condition that the general also agree.

Up until now, the novel has worked very well. But what should be probably a quarter of the book is jammed into a couple of chapters of hasty telling, with no showing at all. One has the feeling that the author was tired of the book. Considering that it was her first novel and that she wrote it out in longhand, I suspect that was the case. All the authors I know, including my husband and I, are tired of the book by that point. But with a computer, it is a lot easier to go on and finish the book correctly than it was in the days of quill pens and inkwells--especially since Austen had no room of her own and had to keep her manuscript in what we would now call the living room, simply covering it when visitors arrived.

This is a highly uneven book. That has led to a problem with deconstructionists finding in it all kinds of things that, for the most part, are present in neither the text nor the subtext nor even the author's context. Such fiddling around is not necessary. The faults in the text are quite obvious and do not need to be sought after with Satan's magnifying glass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now that speaks volumes...
So I thought that Pride and Prejudice was my favorite Jane Austen book. I was incredibly mistaken after reading Northanger Abbey. The story is told by Jane Austen herself. It is as if she was in the room with you reading it out loud. It is the only one of its kind. It really was a shock to know that this book was published so long after it was written and was one of the first novels she completed. As I found, this book was hardly re drafted, not like the other stories I believe. It is the closest we could ever get to Austen herself, the first instinctive writings we could ever read.Raw and powerful. When it was first published long ago it was some years later when it was written, Austen being the clever lady that she was made the story timeless,, so to speak as timeless goes .. that a women like me in the year 2010 could find enjoyment and humor in a book published so long ago. Now that speaks volumes...

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
Jane Austen's first completed novel is lighter and more humorous in tone than her subsequent work.It is however, as beautifully written as that later work - there was, as always with Austen, a lot of rewriting before publication, which in this case was posthumous - and it is in no sense an inferior effort.

All her novels have a sly, subversive wit, but Northanger Abbey is the one in which she employs her humor more or less throughout, although darker elements emerge as the story develops.

It is basically a satire on the Gothic novel, a genre still familiar to us through movies, and makes particular reference to The Mysteries of Udolpho. You don't need to have read that to appreciate the humor; you just need to have some idea of what a Gothic story is, with its gloomy castles, secret chambers and dastardly deeds. In fact, in the episodes that take place in the abbey, the author shows herself very capable of building mystery and tension. She could have written a splendid Gothic horror.

Austen's extraordinary insight into human nature is already evident here.In chapter 5 of this book - which has more author intervention than any of her others - she presents a defense or justification of the novel as a literary form, in which she says, "...the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties...are conveyed to the world in the best-chosen language".That is certainly true of Austen's own novels.

The Signet Classics edition has an introduction by Margaret Drabble which is more an excuse for Drabble to express some of her own prejudices. You certainly shouldn't read it before the novel, because it contains spoilers. The Afterword by Stephanie Laurens is much better and is worth reading. There are no end notes or footnotes to explain the many references and archaisms in the novel.I suspect there are other editions with better editorial content.

2-0 out of 5 stars I guess you have to like the genre
I was mildly amused at first, but as the novel bogged down halfway through, I couldn't help but wonder if there was ever going to be an ending? What trivial and boring lives Austen satirized. Yes, this is satire, but it is not high satire. It's barely noticeable satire. I finally put the book aside, not even caring if the heroine ever gets the man who makes her heart thrill, or any man at all.

What Horses Say should be required reading for anyone considering buying a horse and those who own horses. We all talk to our horses, but most of us don't listen to them. Most of us probably don't have the psychic ability of Julie but please buy this book, read it and use it to at least try to understand what your horse is trying to tell you.I guarantee you will come away from reading this book with ways you can make your horse happier and healthier.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Horses Say: How to Hear, help and Heal them
This is a great book.I have been skeptic in regards to this topic. However it is so well written. It has helped me to understand my horse to a new level.Several horse friends have also enjoyed this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Interesting book, easy to read with sometimes amazing stories. Good book for anyone who thinks a deeper communication with animals is possible, and who wants to know what horses think about the way we're dealing with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent fodder for those wishing to hear more
This is not a step-by-step guide as to how to hear and convey information with horses - rather it is more a compendium of wonderful successes of having done so. It will help fill out the scope of your appreciation of what's possible in animal communication; especially with horses. There are interesting statistics associated with each major subject tackled (saddles. freedoms, companionship and more) based on the experiences of one talented and highly regarded equine specialist. She has kept track of the information she has received from all of her clients and compiles a lot of that information here. Her methods reiterate those expounded on in other books on this same subject, but again, this is not deeply explored in this little volume. I may not advise you to start with this book in your search for how-tos, but I would recommend it as a collection of successes that will add depth to your overall knowledge on the subject of animal communication.

3-0 out of 5 stars common person
While the book was a great read it was not a how to book.I wanted more help with animal communication. This book really just gave extraordinary examples of a fabulous animal communicator so as to convince nonbelievers, but there wasn't a how to part. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rainbow Bear
This book is beautifully written and illustrated.
A lovely story to enjoy but also to help children think about nature and environment with a great illustration of the moral 'be happy with who you are.'
The reason I looked for the book is because I actually found the story on CD first as a fantastic orchestral score written by Stephen Barlow and narrated by Joanna Lumley. The music completely creates the mood of the story and inspires the listener to 'see' the colours of the rainbow, or hear the Polar bear being chased and to have empathy with the bear. The children I teach are loving it. Go out and get it!!!
