3-0 out of 5 stars When the Cat's Away . . .
In a collection written by Will Pfeifer and drawn by David Lopez (with dazzling covers by Adam Hughes), DC's sultry cat burglar reclaims her territory after escaping a prison planet housing every supervillian on Earth. While Pfeifer's Catwoman retains her charm--though she's become a somewhat darker feline--the comic itself, throwing the Cat in the thick of things without an adequate backstory, almost loses it.After that hurdle, though, it's smooth sailing all the way.Though she goes a few rounds with several villains and, of course, the Dark Knight himself, Catwoman proves once again that when you're this smooth, everything's free.

This comic is unrated: Violence, Adult Language.

4-0 out of 5 stars Life isn't fair, Selina.
I've never read any Catwoman comics before, but "Catwoman Dies" was readily available at the local library so I picked it up, and I have to say I'm very happy I did. The first issue or so of this collected edition seems like I came into the series somewhere in the middle -- which I did -- but writer Will Pfeiffer does an excellent job of drawing in the reader regardless of not knowing any backstory. You can pick up this edition and enjoy it from the get-go. By the time I closed the book, I was actually sad for Catwoman and now I want to know more. If I have the opportunity to pick up more issues, I most certainly will.

Some cool positives:

*Catwoman's on hiatus in the beginning, so a friend of hers named Holly is filling the "role." Holly finds she's in way over her head. Luckily, Selina Kyle (the original Catwoman) shows up soon enough to resume her leathers and cat'o'nine tail (translation: whip), pulling Holly's butt out of the proverbial fire.

*We're talking downright vicious villains, Blitzkrieg, an Amazon splinter group called The Bana, and especially killers-for-hire Hammer and Sickle. Talk about mean. None of these villains have any of what us regular folks call "redeeming qualities."

*Catwoman's a mommy. The main thrust of this graphic novel is how Selina is adjusting to life as a mother, and when her identity is compromised, the baddies make it personal by coming after the only family she has, forcing Selina to get personal-er. Some great cinematic stuff here by artists David and Alvaro Lopez.

*Batman. Yes, of course, ol' Bats makes a couple appearances. But Pfeiffer does a good job of maintaining that this is Catwoman's title, not Batman's...although I did notice Selina leans on Bruce (and Alfred) quite a bit (Alfred basically ends up as a babysitter through quite a bit of the novel). Gotta say, there's an amazing gentleness about seeing the Caped Crusader cuddling a cooing six-month-old baby. Pfeiffer includes an excellent scene to note: Selina is looking on as a smiling Bruce/Batman has his cowl pulled back and is holding her baby. It's 3 am as he stands in Selina's barren apartment, comforting her child, who's little hand is touching his chin. Selina narrates:

"See, here's the thing people don't get about Bruce. They think he's all about beating up badguys or striking terror into the hearts of the underworld. But that's not it. That's not it at all.

"When you get right down to it, when you take away the cape and the cowl and the capital 'T" in 'The Batman'...He's all about protecting the innocent."

*Ultimately, "Catwoman Dies" is a story of sacrifice, and also Selina will stop at absolutely NOTHING to protect her baby girl. Let's just say it's a good thing the baby is too young to remember some of the stuff that went on around her while she was ga-ga-ing in her crib.

Highly recommended! A MUCH better read than Frank Miller's "All-Star Batman & Robin," which is absolute trash.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catwoman in Salvation Run
This book includes Catwoman numbers from 73 to 77 where we can find a Selina without home, without identity, without Helena, without most part of her disguise not even a mask.

She must began from zero, and then she find herself caught and send to another planet with the worst of the Earth's villain. She must survived and almost work with them to find a way to come back and when she does she find herself in a brand new world where everything is possible...

It takes a turn in Catwoman serie and abandon the drama from last numbers to become more pure action pushing Selina in one problem to other not letting her any time to take morale decisions.

Will Pfeifer keeps getting up the level and David and Alvaro Lopez get more used to Catwoman's world and did a great job. Totally recomendable.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's time to say goodbye
In my review of the previous Catwoman trade I stated that, due to weak sales, the inclusion of plot elements like a replacement Catwoman and motherhood may not have been the best direction for this character to take. Judging by the conclusion of this trade, DC may be in agreement. Despite the fact that she has had two lengthy runs, Catwoman will always be a difficult character to star in her own ongoing series. She is not a true "superhero", and any comic with a villain as its' protagonist has inherent problems also. This particular trade illustrates many of her limitations when she is portrayed as a hero. In her defense, she was not immensely aided by the extremely poor storylines involving such lame villains as Hammer and Sickle, or the ridiculously bad crossover with Amazons Attack. Only the last two issues, involving the emotional resolution of the dilemma with her daughter, salvaged this book from total mediocrity. Pfeiffer himself practically admits to the overall misfiring of his tenure by his attempt at the very end to basically retcon much of what has occurred during it. It was recently announced that this comic will be cancelled within a few months, which was quite disappointing news at the time, but not so much now. DC needs to figure out the best way to use this great character in the future, and another ongoing may not be the best fit for her. She will always be a major player in the DCU, and will be involved in the upcoming Hush story in Detective, and probably other projects as well. Time will tell.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too impressive...
I usually don't read too many DC comics, but I remember the excitement when Catwoman was revamped and now, some years later, have decided to take a look. I've loved waht Adam Hughes has done with the covers, but, at least in this volume, I'm less impressed with the storytelling. This volume, Catwoman Dies, finds new mother Selina Kyle struggling to balance the life of a roof-hopping antihero with that of a full-time mom. However, as new foes adn old keep coming out of the woodwork, Selina continually finds that the balance shifts unfavorably. Will she have to make a decision between anti-(super)heroics and motherhood? The answer may surprise you.

Overall, I'd say this is fairly mediocre as far as comics go. The art is passable (a little on the cartoony side, but fine); however, I'm unconvinced by the storyline. The entire Catwoman-as-mother angle simply rings hollow; it may have worked better if done with another superheroine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Catwoman reboots............
"Catwoman, Book Five: The Replacements"
Written by Will Pfiefer
Illustrated by David Lopez
(DC Comics, 2007)
-------------------------------------------------
The creative team of Ed Brubaker and Darwyn Cooke, the driving force behind the previous four volumes of "Catwoman," are a hard act to follow. Indeed, they transformed Selina Kyle from a B-list superhero character with lots of built-up mystique into a full-fledged graphic novel heroine, the star of one of the best comics that DC had produced in years. Pfiefer and Lopez do okay picking up the threads of the Brubaker-Cooke storylines -- it's nice to see the spotlight still on Slam Bradley, and the training of Selina Kyle's replacement, Holly, as the new Catwoman, is kind of fun.(Nice to see Wildcat back in action, too!)

On the other hand, Pfiefer doesn't seem to have a solid grip on Selina's personality, and she begins to recede into stick-figure territory; similarly, the villains of this episode, the Angle and some pasty-faced, goth-y uber-film buff who is making his own criminal life into some sort of meta-reality show, reek of the tedium of DC's Vertigo imprint, full of simplistic "dark" "twisted" plot points whose trip-you-out tropes are by now quite well-worn and tiresome. Brubaker's approach, keeping Catwoman closer to the Batman/Daredevil crimefighter/noir traditions was a better idea.I might check out the next volume, but I suspect that may be about it for me.I'd give this one a 3.5, if I could.(Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain book reviews)

4-0 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader
Pregnant handover.

Another part of the One Year Later stories, and an odd one. They've taken the femme fatale, and had her drop the bundle offscreen so to speak. So will Selina is ensconced at home looking after the kid, her protege takes over the Catwoman leathers. While she might fill them out aesthetically reasonably well, tactically, logistically and skillfully? Not so much, given she is having severe problems with just one killer and just one cop.

3.5 out of 5

4-0 out of 5 stars Catwoman - hero, villain, mother
Will Pfeifer's run on Catwoman is one of those frustrating paradoxes, a well respected comic that does not sell well. Changes certainly have been made during his tenure, some controversial, including a replacement Catwoman and the birth of Selina's baby girl. This approach may be applauded for adding realistic life situations to the storytelling; it certainly gives new meaning to the term "working mother", but may not be what the readership wants. All pluses aside, it tends to detract from the superhero aspect of the book, replacing it with more of a soap opera feel. Of course one person's soap opera is another's characterization. This trade comprises both approaches. The first half focuses more on her interpersonal relationships and her young daughter, with the second concentrating on her Catwoman alter ego in an adventure in Metropolis involving Lex Luthor. It is the latter that is the more intriguing and works the best. The new direction was an interesting and possibly necessary direction to explore, adding depth to her character and her mythos, but at a price. Superhero characters having marriages and/or children is a hot topic currently in comics, with some thinking it limits potential story possibilities with them. Selina has and always will be a major part of any Catwoman story, and the two personas meld perfectly to make her the great character that she is, but first and foremost she is Catwoman, a lone wolf, part hero, part villain. It may be time to take her back to her roots, which is probably what most people want anyways.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's "New Coke" for Catwoman
Comic-book readers often must suffer through a "New Coke" phase in their favorite titles. Heroes as iconic as Superman, Batman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern and, as of this writing, Wonder Woman have been killed or otherwise disposed of while a younger, fresher and, almost certainly, inferior substitute takes their place. In most cases, the publisher eventually recognized the error and brought the classic version back to the fore.

Now it's Catwoman's turn and, as usual, it's probably a mistake.

In what will probably turn out to be a plotting catastrophe, writer Will Pfeifer decided it was time for Selina Kyle to get pregnant. With a baby on the way, Selina decides it's time to give up her roof-hopping and crook-kicking ways, and she passes the costume and whip on to an unlikely successor: Holly, former-prostitute-turned-lesbian sidekick.

A crash training course doesn't really prepare Holly for the job, however, and right out of the gate she runs afoul of several large problems. It's hard to imagine which is worse, the film-obsessed villain who wants to kill Catwoman or the tireless cop who wants to arrest her for murder.

Of course, it's not long before Selina is forced back into her costume (which, given her recent pregnancy, doesn't fit quite like it used to). And it's not long before her baby is put at risk because of her nocturnal outings -- and, let's be honest here, the sight of a maternally outraged Catwoman is a treat.

But New Coke never satisfied the thirst like Classic Coke does, and Holly as Catwoman is equally unsatisfying. She lacks both skill and motivation, and it appears her future must involve either an unrealistic upgrade in abilities or her constant use as a foil to bring Selina back into action and save her. Either way, I'll sip the new formula grudgingly until DC brings the real deal back to the shelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book for fellows
good book for fellows, details about most procedures, nice diagrams and pictures. I recommend it for all fellows in pain meds.

2-0 out of 5 stars False Advertising
This review pertains to the 2nd edition 2008 release of this title.

Per the back cover of the book:
"See exactly how to proceed via a DVD of video clips, demonstrating proper patient positioning and difficult procedures..."

This is one of the major reasons I purchased this book, and likely one of the major reasons other people are considering this book.

However, the DVD only covers THREE different procedures! They are:
1. Hypogastric Plexus Block
2. Lumbar sympathetic block
3. Splanchnic nerve block

This is all that is on the DVD!!! Out of the dozens if not hundreds of procedures in this textbook, why only videos of these three? They are by no means the most difficult pain procedures to master, nor are they very commonly employed in *most* pain practices, with the exception of the lumbar sympathetic block for CRPS/RSD.

Furthermore, these video clips were not made for this book, they are recycled videos from the University of Texas Pain Department that were filmed long ago, and sold under by the World Institute of Pain on its website on a DVD called "Instructional DVD Video #1 for interventional pain treatment techniques." So, I already had the exact same videos which I had purchased from the WIP previously! What a disappointment!

Secondly, these videos have a commercial agenda in employing only the Epimed curved blunt tip needles, which are an invention of Dr. Racz and manufactured by Epimed, whose President is Dr. Racz' son!

Other than
1. Only three techniques covered
2. Commercial bias

I think the video is quite good. But one would think there should be dozens of techniques on this DVD not just three!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book!
Good Book!

This is no doubt the most comprehensvie interventional pain management book that has been published so far. The value of having it on your bookshelf for quick reference during practice and for continued self improvement as an interventionist is of great significance. However, it is far from perfection.

Part I, "Anantomy and Physiology of Pain: Clinical Correlates" serves as the basic review of Anantomy and Pharmacology of pain processing system. The best chapter in this part is the "Functional Anatomy of the Spine" which contains detailed description and illustration of spine innervation from Atlantooccipital joint to lumbosacral facet, intervetebral discs, spinal nerves, etc. A concise review on techniques on performing selective diagnostic injections of the spinal axis at the end of this chapter including discography, nerve root sleeve approach and facet joint makes this chapter much more clinically relavant.

Part III, "Neural Blockade and Neurolytic Blocks", describes and demonstrates A to Z interventional techniques for blocking both neuroaxial and peripheral nerves. The chapters on radiofrequency techniques are very well written, thorough and easy to follow. However, it would be much better if authors included procedure codes for such procedrues as Rhizotomy of SI joint, RF lesioning of ramus communicans nerve, Ganglionotomy of cervical, thoracic and lumbar levels,RF lesioning of lumbar disc of which the procedural codes are no where to be found. I personally have been struggling to find such codes for the above techniques in my practice. The chapters on performing sympathetic block at various levels are also clearly illustrated and easy to follow, which serve well as the guide for performing these blocks in comparion to other interventional books which lack such content. Nervertheless, Part III also has many weaknesses. In fact, some of the techniques introdueced are rather old and obsolete especially when judging from the progress achievedin interventional pain management by 2001, but unfortunately without being incorporated into this section. E.g, most well trained interventional pain specialists will agree that fluoroscopy serves as "eyes" for the intervetionist, however, some of the chapters discussing neuroaxial intervential techniques do not even have any fluoroscopic image, such as the chapter on lumbar epidural block as well as the one on Sacroiliac joint injection. The worst chapter of all is the "Sacroiliac Joint Injection and Low Back Pain". First of all as mentioned above, it does not have any fluroscopic picture.Secondly, the patient was placed "supine position" instead of prone, yet, the "PSIS" was identified? How can someone identify PSIS from front? Let's just assume this is a "typo" error. Even so,no matter how many times I read through the procedural description, I still could not figure out how this was done. For someone like me, who is Board Certified in American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Board of Pain Medicine, an interventional pain management fellowship trained spine interventionist, who simply could not make sense of such a simple procedre from its description. I wonder whether the author who wrote this chapter really knew how to performSI joint injection.Maybe it means that this portion should be re-written. This is actually the main reason that I give this book 4 stars rating despite there are many other chapters that are very well written and useful for interventional pain practice. Another shortcoming is that some of the commonly performed procedures such selective nerve root block or transforaminal epidural were nerver even mentioned in Part III, but I think, should have been done so, although in the Chapeter of "Functional Anatomy of the Spine" of part I, selective nerve root sleeve appraoch was briefly introduced, it should also be here in Part III as this is the neural blockade section. Lastly, many of the interventionists consider "Selective Nerve Root Block"(SNRB) and/or Transforaminal Epidural Injection (TFEI) "bread and butter" of spine intervention, yet, this "most comprehensive interventional pain bible" with close to 800 pages does not even have them in its word index, which undoubtedly impacts negatively on its authority.

Part IV & Part V, "Neuroaugmentation" & "Spinal Administration of Opioids & Other Analgesic Compounds" are the best work of this book. They are the best resoures available for spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal drug delivery pump. The authors did outstanding work in writing up these chpaters and introducing to readers step by step the mechanisms, patient selection, implantation techniques and complications. The chapters on intrathecal drug delivery pump has helped my practice tremendously. However, the only shortingcoming is that it does not have chapter addressing Intrathecal Baclofen pump for Spasticity and Spasticity related pain syndromes. There are quite a number of patients with spasticity disorders due to brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, etc, requiring implanted intrathecal baclofen pump. However, there is severe lack of resources in guiding the long term management of such patients, ie,maximal drug concentration, maximal daily drug dosage, drug holidays, etc.

The purpose of this review is also to give the editors some of the feedback from interventional pain physicians like me so as to extract more "nutrients" from its contributors in the future and to make the Third Edition a greater success, in addition to share my experience from learning this book and utilizing what I have learned in the practice of interventional pain managent.

... 2-0 out of 5 stars Short and not sweet - A waste of money for most
This book is only good if you do not plan on collecting other Dark Reign TPB or comics. The person who will get the most out of this is the person who wants to buy 1 TPB to get a little history on Dark Regin and then read the comics as they come out now. If you plan on collecting the back issues or the other Dark Regin books, then this book will be mostly useless to you.

1-0 out of 5 stars TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY
Do not buy this. Over half the book consists of interviews with creators of Marvel comics about events that have now already happened. The only really interesting inclusions are Secret Invasion: Dark Reign and Dark Avengers 1, both of which are collected in more worthwhile trades. If you care about these big events, you are probably already reading the fabulous New Avengers, penned by Brian Michael Bendis. Volume 10 of the New Avengers collections contains Secret Invasion: Dark Reign, as well as several issues of New Avengers. And it's cheaper than this!

If you are interested in following the dastardly exploits of Norman Osborn, you may be interested in Dark Avengers, also by Bendis. It's almost a companion to New Avengers, as there is a fair amount of interplay. Volume 1 contains, of course, Dark Avengers 1.

So there you go - don't buy this, buy one or both of those books. For me, Bendis is the best Marvel scribe of the current day, and New Avengers is the best title. I enjoyed Dark Avengers as well, more than I thought I would. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another strong entry.
Peter David, Fallen Angel: Down to Earth (DC, 2007)

It took three years for the second volume of Fallen Angel, Down to Earth, to appear. It was worth the wait. We learn a great deal more about Lee, and also about Black Mariah (not the main bad guy, but obviously a much more important character in the story than the first volume would have led us to believe), get some more fast-paced and action-packed stories, more wonderful dialogue-- basically, more of everything that made the first Fallen Angel book great. It may be another three years until we see book three, but I'll be waiting in line when it appears. This is very, very good stuff. ****

4-0 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader
In the second trade collection of Peter David's DC Comics run on Fallen Angel the Angel has a bit of an arch-enemy, of the female persuasion.

So, some violence and the hunt for an arcane artifact, along with some advice from a bartender who may be a little bit more than he actually seems to be.

3.5 out of 5

4-0 out of 5 stars DC's goof
"Down to Earth" is the second collection from Fallen Angel's brief run at DC, and it sets the title character, a.k.a. Lee, up as one of the most complex and interesting in the comics field.

Although her origins remain in doubt -- and we don't know why her feet don't touch the ground when she walks -- the red-shrouded Fallen Angel by night (and physical education teacher by day) is an enigma. Working here in pursuit of a blood-soaked shard of the True Cross, she proves herself willing to cross any line -- including torture -- to achieve her goals.

Is she a heroine? No doubt. But Lee's hands aren't always clean at the end of the day, and her motives aren't always pure. Anyone looking to her for help had better be prepared for the consequences.

Bete Noire, the delta city where Lee lives and works, is as much a character as the people in this book; it's far more intriguing than the Metropolis or Keystone City of other books, and I look forward to exploring its nooks and crannies.

DC cancelled this series far too soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong women, great dialogue
Three introductory vignettes help us get to know Oracle, Black Canary and the Huntress before settling down to two main story arcs.

In the first story, the Calculator (whose obsessive behavior has made him the primary source of information for Lex Luthor's Secret Society) becomes obsessed with finding Oracle and hires goons to capture and torture her agent Savant, hoping to lure her out into the open.Meanwhile, Huntress and the rest of the Birds brutalize rival gangs in a bold bid to infiltrate the mob, forcing Batman to move in to prevent a major bloodbath. When the Birds finally move to rescue Savant they find none other than Deathstroke ready and waiting for them.

In the second tale, the Society's leading torture doctor has threatened to turn against them, so the Society is out to get him and his daughter.Much to everyone's surprise (and consternation) Dinah has switched places with the legendary assassin knows as Shiva.Shiva joins the Birds to try to rescue the torture doctor while Dinah powers up by undergoing Shiva's brutal training regimen in a far-off land. Will the Birds be able to keep Shiva's murderous instincts in check? And how will they be able to save the doctor and his daughter from the unbeatable Prometheus?

As always, Simone's dialogue is terrific and her portrayal of these strong women is little short of inspiring. The stories have some great moments with real surprises, and definitely stand out from the usual superhero fare. The best art is from penciller Adrianna Melo, even though she only does the first few pages, after which the rest of the art seems wooden and clunky by comparison.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best women charcaters in comics!!
Birds of Prey by Gail Simone and a host of artists truely displays great comics writing without making the women in the book a cliche! The multitude of artists and the somewhat jarring break in the middle take away some of the glory of this trade but overall all its very good.

Lady Shiva swap.

As part of the whole One Year Later deal, the Birds of Prey have a new member - Lady Shiva - the Canary has gone off for some further training, leaving Shiva replace her as part of this deal.

Needless to say, the international assassin and mega-martial artist and the rest of the Birds have different working styles.

Or, what do you get if you stone cold deadpan killer, ex-mafia chick, and a librarian?

5-0 out of 5 stars Consistently good
I first started to like this book with Chuck Dixon. No disrespect to him but Gail Simone is very good. I recommend all the Birds of Prey titles with her writing. Too bad she has moved on to Wonder Woman. The art is also very good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gail Simone does it again!
Although I disliked previous TPB , I must admit this one has plot, humor and everything that made me start collecting Birds of Prey! Not many people can write like this, and art is good or great, like always. ... Read more
