The classic now available for Kindle owners. Long overdue...Amazon.com Review
Source of legend and lyric, reference and conjecture,Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is for most children purepleasure in prose. While adults try to decipher Lewis Carroll'sputative use of complex mathematical codes in the text, or debate hisalleged use of opium, young readers simply dive with Alice through therabbit hole, pursuing "The dream-child moving through a land / Ofwonders wild and new." There they encounter the White Rabbit, theQueen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, and the Mad Hatter, among amultitude of other characters--extinct, fantastical, and commonplacecreatures. Alice journeys through this Wonderland, trying to fathomthe meaning of her strange experiences. But they turn out to be"curiouser and curiouser," seemingly without moral orsense.

For more than 130 years, children have reveled in the delightfullynon-moralistic, non-educational virtues of thisclassic. In fact, at every turn, Alice's new companions scoff at hertraditional education. The Mock Turtle, for example, remarks that hetook the "regular course" in school: Reeling, Writhing, andbranches of Arithmetic-Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, andDerision. Carroll believed John Tenniel's illustrations were asimportant as his text. Naturally, Carroll's instincts were good; themasterful drawings are inextricably tied to the well-loved story. 2-0 out of 5 stars A magnificent classic. But beware of this KINDLE edition.
I last read this magnificent book many moons ago (1962) when I had some time on my hands.I was fascinated by the story and the logic inculcated within. So now that I have a Kindle and some time I thought why not read this gem?

The book of course is superb. No complaints there. The Kindle edition however is a different matter. There are NO ILLUSTRATIONS as in the hardcopy versions of this book. With a story saturated with visual metaphors this is an unforgivable sin - even though the book is offered for free.Sometimes "free" is really NOT free because this version can drive away some of the younger crowd from reading the book. That is the highest of sins.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my desert island desirables
Blood and Sunlight: A Maryland Vampire Story

The sheer lunacy of Alice is so incredibly imaginative. Carroll was creating worlds long before the likes of Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett.Definitely a must read. What gets overlooked is the amazing characterization of Alice. She's curious (of course!), but also pragmatic, determined, and wickedly unflappable. She might be the maddest of all of them! Definitely set aside some time to read this edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars This was interesting to read
The pictures of the characters are cool. But I thought they change the story a bit and add some different parts, instead of hearing the same lines and speeches again. but I still liked it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Classic Boredom
I read this as a kid, and hated it.But thought that maybe age, maturity, and increased intellect might give me a different perspective.Bored me as much today as it did yesterday. It's indeed a classic, and that's wonderful for enduring literature and the amazing allegories it contains. But for me it means snoretime, not wonderland.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so special
Entertaining, but not so special. Maybe in its time and era it was, but for me it was no more than 3 stars. It was a free Kindle book though, so no money lost here. Thank you, Amazon :)) ... Read more

Through the Looking-Glass is a work of juvenile fiction written by Lewis Carroll (real name Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). It is the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, 1865. Through the Looking-Glass is set in a mirror-image world of Wonderland, and often uses changes in physical size for a surreal effect to the mind of the reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharp, as always ...
Al has a keen sense of humor and knows his subject matter.I bought the book, read the book, and learned from the book, with no intention whatsoever of angling for the $1 million prize.(Like buying Cracker Jacks because they taste great; not because of the surprise inside.)If our government and its various arms continue to pump out 1,600 page legislative bills, doesn't it make sense to have Al write these bills? It'd be a much funnier read, not to mention be a heck of a lot more logical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Out-Of-The-Box for Our Times! (and incentives too!)
OOBonomics may be the cleverest economics book written. You can define "clever" as new approach, new ideas and clearly in his own unique and engaging style, cleverness in words and style.Any way you look at it, it wins.

These ideas will really make you think and stimulate those of your own - which is just the point! Moreso, Mr. Lewis presents his observations and proposals with a humorous, engaging manner that makes this read as enjoyable as thought-provoking.

After you read these ideas, you will be tempted to ask why they have not been pursued....but then again, that could be said for many substantive practical ideas. All will be stimulated to react to Mr. Lewis' ideas and enjoy this fast yet substantive read. It only begs for more from the author - and even moreso through other media based on his humorous delivery.

5-0 out of 5 stars More outstanding the Gandpa Munster
Al Lewis is a master of finding the jewels in the crown.OOBonomics is not only 'out of the box', it is fresh, witty, timely and realistic. It is a must read if you want to stimulate yourOOBonomics:12 Great "Outside Of the Box" Economic Policy Ideas No One Has Thought Of...Until Now 'out of the box' thinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ingenious and entertaining
OOBonomics presents in uniquely humorous and witty words creative yet simple solutions to market inefficiencies and wasted tax dollars. Although a wide range of topics are covered, the ideas were very compelling and easy to understand. As a college student, I found this book very informative and enjoyable. The book shows various applications of economics, which is way more practical and insightful than your economics 101 textbook!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and informative
I've never before read a book in which the footnotes are possibly more entertaining and instructive than the main text.I like this book so much -- I'm doing some "out of the box" thinking on my own and am going to buy 80 copies to distribute to winning contestants in a tournament I run in lieu of boring trophies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lewis to the Tous Exo
Lewis would have been most interested in this work, a collection of essays by some modern thinkers engaged in discovering and sharing Lewis' approach to engaging with the tous exo, those outside the church.

These span the vectors of philosophy, literary, personal, etc. with the attempt in mind to explain why he was and remains so inviting to such an unbelieving secular age.

Having consumed just about half of these writings thus far, I found them to be engaging and enlightening. Especially delighted with Michael Ward's contribution: Lewis's Depictions of Conversion. He finds in Lewis the attitude which I concur with, that of getting the attention off of us knowing God, but that of God knowing us!As this quote from first Lewis' Narnia film recently shows in Eustace conversing with Edmund:"Do you know Aslan?," to which Edmund replies, "Well--he knows me."The chief end of man is not to love God but to be loved by God."Amen!

Well worth read for the Lewis fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars After all, Lewis bears repeating...
The book is a collection of sixteen articles written by as many contributors, each focusing on the evangelistic import of the life and work of C.S. Lewis. These are dispersed under four headings, as follows: Pt.I The Motivation: The Influence and Potential of Lewis's Evangelism; Pt.II The Explanation: Why Was Lewis Such an Effective Evangelist?; Pt.III The Technique: Making Christianity Plausible; Pt.IV The Argument: Defending the Faith.

As I am not aware of any other book that so specifically approaches this angle of Lewis, I recommend it to all who are interested in learning more about the motivation behind the man. However, (with all due respect to Mr. Menuge, whose own articleoutlining certain similarities between the Apostle Paul and Lewis is interesting enough)... I feel that the book as a whole would have benefitted by more careful editing. For instance, there are quotations (some lengthy) which are repeated, and several instances when the reader is left to wonder "Hey, didn't I just read about this in a previous article?" ...Well actually, yes you DID !

On the redeeming side, the book opens with Wayne Martindale's excellent and much needed expose of the inaccuracies latent in the 1993 film "Shadowlands" which featured Anthony Hopkins in the role of Lewis. Martindale's research reveals that those most closely involved in the production of this (otherwise commendable) movie were not governed by portrayal of truth or fact. And those who are interested in Lewis's personal understanding of "longing" or "sehnsucht" will appreciate Douglas T. Hyatt's article entitled "Joy, The Call Of God In Man." Drawing much upon "The Pilgrim's Regress" Hyatt delineates Lewis's "argument from desire" and goes on to show how several other great thinkers like Augustine, Pascal, and even (horrors) Nietzsche, also taught on the concept of the "longing" that cannot be filled by any earthly thing.

The occasional less-than-magnificent article notwithstanding, this is still a book that is successful in showing how consistently Christ-centered Lewis was. And considering how weighty and memorable Lewis's pronouncements always were, one wonders whether Menuge's decision at repetition was intentional. If so, I add the fifth star.

4-0 out of 5 stars A serious study of the evangelistic impact of Lewis.
This excellent study looks at the impact of Lewis in the lives of others through his writings, such as the well known Christian writer Charles Colson, the Socratic Club of Oxford, posthumously through the movie"Shadowlands," and in other ways.Lewis described his writing, not as evangelistic writing, but as praeparatio evangelica in Latin(translated "preparation for the Gospel").Other writers addressthe similarity of Lewis to the apostle Paul (editor Angus Menuge) and theusefulness of the writings of Lewis for addressing postmodern people.Myrecommendation: buy it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great read!!
This book uses the text from the journals of Lewis and Clark to engage the reader in the day-to-day experiences during the trek westward.Using entries from both Lewis' and Clark's journals Anthony Brandt paints a picture of the scenery, wildlife, waterways, mountains, and peoples met along the way to the Pacific coast. Both men journaled daily and frequently spoke about different findings. This book beautifully combines both men's journals to give the reader a full understanding of the trials and hardships encountered. This is not a "dry" historical accounting, but a colorful, realistic depiction of the great expedition by the Corps of Discovery led by Lewis and Clark. This is an excellent resource and very "reader friendly".

5-0 out of 5 stars The Journals of Lewis and Clark
When I was about halfway through this abridgment, I compared it in a bookstore to the abridgment by Gary Moulton (The Lewis and Clark Journals (Abridged Edition)), editor of the complete edition of the Journals. Whereas Brandt, the editor of the text under review, "modernizes" the language, correcting the spelling and syntax, and combining fragments into grammatically correct sentences, Moulton leaves the spelling and syntax untouched, and only abridges the text to compress the Journals into a single volume.

I expected to prefer Moulton's version, simply because it was less altered, truer to the authors' intent. But, of course, Lewis and Clark did not intend to misspell words - some words in multiple ways - or to use odd, jarring punctuation. The Journals as published by Moulton are Field Drafts, unaltered, which would have been corrected and refined before publication, had Lewis lived to do the necessary work. But yet, there is something robust, vivid and historically present about the uncorrected text; and if the abridgments were equivalent in content, I may have discovered a preference for Moulton's over Brandt's.

But I found Brandt's abridgment more interesting in content - and naturally less linguistically obtrusive. In the section I randomly compared (I don't remember which), Brandt excluded far less than Moulton, and the extent of the exclusions by Moulton were not apparent from the text, leaving the impression that only a sentence or two may have been excised, when in fact full, rich paragraphs were missing from the page.

It isn't that I don't have complaints about Brandt's choices. He often summarizes what he excludes, and many times I wished he had left in what he kept out. There are other abridgments of the Journals in print and whether one is "better" than another, I cannot say. This one, however, is good, and if you're looking for an abridgment to read that reads smoothly and doesn't require decoding skills you might certainly have but would rather not use, consider this edition. When you're finished you might find yourself wanting to read the entire multi-volume Journal, misspellings, sentence fragments, and all.

The Definitive Journals of Lewis and Clark, 7-volume set

The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, 13-Volume Set

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic story best told by those who lived it
This book consists of actual journal entries (with spelling and grammar corrections) and offers interesting insights into the day-to-day rigors of their travels, as well as a unique historical perspective into their journey. Many days were just plain boring- hunted some more, walked some more, saw some more buffalo, etc.- but you really get the feeling of being there.

Best read with maps and additional pictures/illustrations offered in other books in order to get the complete story.Ranked #2 by National Geographic on their list of the Top 100 Adventure Books of all time.I certainly wouldn't rank it that high having read many other books on the list, but it is a must-read nonetheless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Nat'l. Geo. Book of Lewis & Clark Journals
If you don't enjoy thrashing through the "interesting" spelling found in the original journals, this is the book for you. It's been well "translated" into modern American. Some lengthy portions of the journals are merely summarized, so you really only get a partial picture, but the parts you do get are crystal clear.Well worth the read for the Lewis & Clark fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Men Who Need No Introduction
You already know who they are and what they did. Now read a day by day account made while on the voyage westward. From relations with the Indians, to the flora and fauna of the virginal American continent, the conduct of the men and the mercurial nature of the weather, this record of the most famous exploration in US history is a must for historians and casual readers alike. ...
