5-0 out of 5 stars A Poignant Story of Spiritual Awakening
Jason writes eloquently about being found by God in this funny, poignant book. He interweaves humorous stories of growing up in what could be any town in America with heartbreaking vignettes hinting at the sometimes cruelty of the Body of Christ and its effects on his own spiritual journey.

I read, as most others I know did, this book nearly all the way through in one sitting. The prose is easy to read and many of the stories had me in stitches. This book is highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Building distributed web applications is a wide-rangingtopic, covering a variety of technologies and techniques. Windows DNAis the name given to the combination of traditional n-tierarchitecture with the intrinsic Windows 2000 services, including COM+,MSMQ, and Active Directory.Using this architecture, you can designand build scalable enterprise-level distributed applications on theWindows 2000 platform.

This book takes an in-depth look at the DNAarchitecture, focusing on fitting the pieces of the puzzletogether. Each of the logical tiers is examined, with particularemphasis placed on the features COM+ contains to make componentbuilding simpler and more powerful.

Who Is This BookFor?

This book is for anyone involved with building distributed webapplications that want to see the bigger picture. As such the bookassumes a working knowledge of VB and ASP in places, but the emphasisis not so much on the code as on where each of the pieces fit into thepuzzle. It's designed to give you an idea of how each area ortechnology affects you, enabling you to make informed decisions aboutwhether to pursue a subject further, or confidently assert that youcan do without it.

Amazon.com Review
Weighing in at nearly 1,000 pages, Professional Windows DNA is a comprehensive guide to creating state-of-the-art Windows enterprise applications. Written for the more experienced VB or C++ programmer, this guide shows you best practices for creating scalable, multitiered Web applications that make use of the latest and greatest in Microsoft tools and standards, including SOAP and XML.

The tools-based focus of this tutorial is what sets it apart. While the authors provide background on important standards like COM+ for building middle-tier components, the book is anchored by real hands-on examples (and plenty of screen shots, where appropriate) on using tools like Visual Basic and SQL Server 2000.

First, the book leads you through a discussion of the latest developments and tools from Microsoft (like COM+, SQL Server 2000, and SOAP for communicating on distributed systems). There's a thorough tour of COM+, which gives DNA its middle-tier prowess. You'll learn COM+ configuration, security, and deployment, as well as how to use COM+ transactions and asynchronous message processing with built-in MS Message Queue (MSMQ) services. Later, there's a concise introduction to ADO database programming, as well as the new support for XML in SQL Server 2000. Useful debugging advice will help you out with server-side components, which can be notoriously hard to troubleshoot.

Final sections present a fairly substantial case study for an airline reservation system that's built with middle-tier components and ASPs for a Web interface. (There's also an e-commerce application for renting construction equipment.) The book also walks you through implementation of a back-end database, middle-tier COM+ components, and a browser-based front end that's built with ASP.

At least until the new Microsoft .NET Framework arrives, any system architect or developer can rely on this title to get a sense of how to build effective software for the enterprise. Professional Windows DNA is a thorough and up-to-date guidebook on the constantly shifting terrain of Microsoft tools and technologies. It's filled with nearly everything you need to know to develop scalable Web applications by using Visual Basic and Windows 2000. --Richard Dragan

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference
This book comes in handy as a great reference for utilizing these technologies in the real world. If you're looking for a book that you can sit down and read cover to cover to understand the basics, this is not it.If you're an experienced developer who wants to dive into the guts of the technologies, then this is for you.

I recommend this book a chapter at a time (after reading the first 2 review chapters), in order to learn how to implement a technology (like MTS, MSMQ, etc) in the real world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ends and outs of modern Microsoft development
Windows DNA is an platform and methodology for Enterprise development. It is taking all of what Microsoft offers for industry : server software (SQL Server, Biztalk), development software (Visual Studio) and productivity software (Office, Viso) and making them tightly inter operatable to produce scaleable solutions that can be development very rapidly.

This book covers Microsoft DNA and does so very well. If you have been following the evolution of Microsoft's Enterprise development methodology and related technologies (MTS, COM, etc..) then you should flip though this one before buying to make sure it offers enough new information for your investment. Do this especially if you already have the Wrox title: Professional MTS/MSMQ and you have a good book on ASP or Visual Basic.

If however you are a beginner/intermediate level Visual Basic, ASP or VC++ developer and you want to expand you knowledge from how to build small-to mid-sized client-server or desktop applications to building scalable Enterprise solutions then this book is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good DNA (almost .Net) overview in one book
I have to admit, this book contains an impressive overview of all the Windows DNA technologies. As a reminder, DNA has been there for years and was working under NT4.It has been revamped with trumpets with a new name, .Net, with all those new services. The authors do have this in mind and they will tell you where .Net will be improving features.

I would recommend this book to anybody that wants to know what is Windows DNA/.Net (beside thinking it's everything that Microsoft is providing for developers!).Of course, you cannot have all those technologies into one book and expect the best coverage on all of them.Having that in mind, the authors create an incredible reference for developers that wants to upgrade to a more scalable & distributed environment as well as to take leverage of the new technologies that came with Windows 2000 (for developers that is).

The only thing that I have to mention (and I did to Wrox) was that I personnaly believe that this book, though the readers needs to have professional knowledge of development, would be better inside the Beginning series since this book serves as an overview reference of all those technologies.Wrox will undoubtfully then release multiple Professional books that will go further in those new technologies (such as doing COM+ events or asynchronous components, having XML Business Objects, etc.).

As a bottom line, most of the authors wrote in a confident programming style and it is a very interesting book to go through....But I can't wait for the .Net one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview
This book covers the general topics extremely well, and offers great insight into DNA. At first glance it gives a good read and is great as a reference. well done. i would recommend anyone who is the slightest familiar with distributed programming, but needs greater insight.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Practical Windows DNA Workshop in a Book
I have read, reviewed or skimmed through every book written about Windows DNA/COM from WROX, MSPRESS, AW and others. If you ever wanted to master the DNA architecture then definitely this is the book for you. In a well written book the authors explain the why, when and how of distributed application development with Windows DNA architecture. The subject matter begins with the obvious COM and n-tier architecture, which will ease the beginners in. Afterwards the plot thickens as more advanced areas are covered, like COM+ services, universal data access, XML and SOAP. The book is also great on the practical side as the theory is put to practice in a series of sample applications exploring the architectural ideas and techniques of implementation. This book builds and enhances the ideas first explored in the book "Professional MTS and MSMQ Programming with VB and ASP", and in contrast to that book you will find here a more robust, detailed and mature coverage of the subject matter.

A must book for visual basic developers working on distributed or web based applications. If you are a C++ guy then although the book is VB oriented, you still will find important insight into the architecture, services and methodology that comprise the DNA archetiture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Always useful
A must-have for any personal medical library.Great concise information and pediatric dosages. It's nice when my pda program gives me a wide range of dosages to use for pediatric patients or does not have the dosage for the certain illness I am treating.Since these books are taylored for the peds population, as opposed to many of the pharm pda programs, I trust them a lot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Harriet Lane Handbook of Pediatrics
This classic handbook is even available together as a package for $64,95 and indeed a good bargain with a lot of knowledge and hands-on practical advice. The handbook is available as print, but also with online access for the same price.
The Harriet Lane Handbook started in 1953, when six residents without funds or supervision from their superiors met around a table in the library of the Harriet Lane Home in order to develop a pocket size pearl book for other future residents. The teaching and guidance of residents have now moved to the Frank Oski Conference Room at the Children's Hospital and Surgical Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and without a doubt a pearl has been created, not only for the residents in Baltimore, but for many generations of pediatricinas around the world. This version is the 18th edition and that in itself testifies to the importance of this book.
As a new companion we now have for the first time also the "Handbook of pediatric antimicrobial therapy" as a book in itself, because of the need for more information and advice on pharmacological options in the treatment of children.
Both handbooks are for practitioners and clinicians working with children in a straighforward language and sound structure with a wealth of information available in pocket form for the busy house officer or resident in pediatric departments all over the world. I can only give my highest recommendation.

Excerpt: Sidney Eugene "Sid" Bream (born August 3, 1960 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania) is an American former Major League Baseball player. He played his entire 11-year career (1983-1994) in the National League. He is currently the hitting coach for the State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League. After attending Liberty University, Bream was drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1981 amateur draft. During his minor league career he hit .329 with 83 home runs and 407 RBI, including a .419 on-base percentage and a .537 slugging percentage in the Dodgers farm system; he made his debut with the team in 1983. Despite his good numbers in the minors, he was just a mediocre hitter in the Major Leagues with good gap power (resulting in lots of doubles) and above-average defense at first base. The Dodgers expected him to replace Greg Brock at first base, who himself performed below expectations when Steve Garvey left to sign with the San Diego Padres. But Bream fared no better than Brock at the plate, and ultimately Franklin Stubbs was given a chance to be the one to finally fill in the void left by Garvey's departure. However, it was not until Eddie Murray arrived in Los Angeles that the Dodgers finally had an above average hitting first baseman. The Dodgers finally gave up on Bream late in the 1985 season and traded him along with Cecil Espy to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Bill Madlock, who was in the declining phase of his career. It was in Pittsburgh where Bream finally had a chance to play every day. In 1986 he set an MLB record with 166 assists at first base. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Balance
I found this book to be one of the better books that I have read in regards to IT.Too often I find that books do not offer a good blend of technical theory with practical application. In other words, either just told why to do something without being told where, or told to place check in said box without being told why as if I knew the material inside and out. This book didn't do that in my opinion.I felt as though the author had spent some time ensuring that the practical application was correct and each time I posed the question "why?" he was right there with a hint or note to give me some info.

Prior to reading this book I had used only ISA2K6 when it was pre-RTM (late Beta) in 2006 and early 2007.Since then I hadn't spent much time dealing with it but found this book to be quite useful in reminding me what I had previously learned as well as shedding light on some other issues that I had either not been able to find the answer to or had not had time to research (as many might agree, sometimes finding information on ISA isn't as easy as we would all like).

As far as those of you looking to get the +S on the MCSA or MCSE...yes I used this book for that purpose.I have taken the 70-351 and I did find this book very helpful. On some of the questions posed throughout the test I recalled some of the information provided by the author (and remember that bit about theory and application - helped).

Will I go as far as to say this is the definative book for ISA2K6, no.I haven't read the others. But I will say that if you use it or plan to, this book is worth the time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a migration guide!
This book is a fairly in-depth guide for ISA 2006, but it is NOT a migration or upgrade guide. At a minimum, I expected a full chapter dedicated to upgrading from ISA 2004 to 2006, but no such chapter exists. The last 5 pages of the book discuss "ISA 2004 Upgrade Considerations", and that's about it!
Suprising, considering the author's stellar work and track record.I had this on order for 6 months while I was working on other projects, and now that it's here, it's a big letdown.
There is some good material in this book, especially in the realm of security, but that's not why I bought it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Find and Replace
This book seems as if they have just done a find and replace on the text "2004" to "2006", and strangely enough they even managed to miss a few! Most of the book is an exact replica of ISA 2004 by the same author (I now have both). There is also no explanation of how to do a migration from 2004 (or anything) to 2006, the author preferring the user to do a complete re-install, which is strange considering the title of the book. That said, there are a couple of chapters on new features but overall this book is decidedly average. ... Read more

This book is a resource that examines significant brands and the points of interest associated with the success (and sometimes failures) of the profiled brands. Brands in this work span sport, recreation, and beyond, and each chapter sheds light on actions which have utilized sport business to cultivate brand equity. The concept of branding is important and has generated great interest in academic and professional circles. Brands range from a collection of images that represent products to a variety symbols associated with products and their producers and consumers build associations and affinities through to these brands.
