Scholar Lawrence R. Broer brings together twelve essays that show John Updike's Rabbit novels--RABBIT, RUN (1960), RABBIT REDUX (1971), RABBIT IS RICH (1981), and RABBIT AT REST (1990)--to be a carefully crafted fabric of changing hues and textures, of social realism and something of grandeur, worthy of Dickens, Thackeray, and Joyce. Should be of interest to anyone interested in Updike, modern literature, and the changing cultural more of our times. ... Read more

Product Description
The end of the Cold War has affected debates about maritime strategy, doctrine, operations and technology. This has led to an intellectual reconsideration of the theory and practice of maritime power. For the first time, this book addresses these themes in a systematic and overarching way, and brings together internationally renowned scholars in a single text. Using the United Kingdom as a case-study, the volume concludes with an evaluation of how, in practical terms, the changing face of maritime power is influencing western navies. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1977 a single film called Star Wars exploded on the consciousness of the world. Since then the franchise, created by George Lucas, has become a global entertainment corporation. The merchandise of the original trilogy was largely confined to toys and games, but those games have since become computerized, the toys more sophisticated, and Star Wars has moved into the multi-media environment of the twenty-first century in ways unimaginable in the long-ago world of 1977. Computer games and web sites, novels, animated television shows, as well as a new trilogy of films, have all placed Star Wars at the center of world popular culture.

Finding the Force of the Star Wars Franchise brings together contributors who critically ana-lyze the Star Wars universe from many perspectives. Topics include war, foreign policy, gen-der roles, spirituality and religion, toy play and adult collecting, creative fandom, race, special effects, and mythology. Contributors include Jonathan L. Bowen , Lincoln Geraghty , Jess C. Horsley , Bruce Isaacs , Roger Kaufman, Michelle J. Kinnucan , Mark McDermott , Stephen P. McVeigh , John Panton, Jennifer E. Porter , Andrew Plemmons, Pratt Philip L. Simpson, Rachel Wagner , and Stephanie J. Wilhelm ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid and Accessible - EXCELLENT READ!
This one finally ties it all together from a variety of viewpoints and with a great deal of creativity! It's not your "usual" Star Wars book - the one that barely tells you more than you, the fans of the world, already knew. It goes 'way beyond that with literate, accessible writing, thoughtful approaches, and it does indeed tie the franchise together in ways we've always somehow sensed they should be -- but couldn't quite do it on our own. It compliments the reader's intelligence and knowledge, and challenges you to further critical thinking (enjoyably so!) about the burgeoning 'world' of Star Wars. Buy, read, recommend to everyone who knows there is real depth to the Star Wars films, and who wants to get into then the way they should be addressed. This is another keeper by Kapell (see his JACKING INTO THE MATRIX volume): you'll have as much fun with it as you had watching the films!

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers the Territory
With fourteen contributors, and sections ranging from myth and religion to playtoys and collecting, the coverage in this volume is outstanding. Gender issues, racial issues, post-colonial perspectives: the range is well attuned to the _Star Wars_ franchise. Not always praising, but on target and focused throughout. Too many chapters to single any out here, but Plemmons Pratt's look at the future of digital film is worth the price of the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ
I have had the oppertunity to preview this book and it is wonderful. I loved everything that I read and it left me wanting more.It is a must have for anyone who likes to explore Star Wars or popular culture. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK But
The story is great but the author ought to get someone else to do the reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars THRILLS AND CHILLS IN THIS READING

In this, the 16th Matthew Scudder thriller,we meet a changed protagonist. Many of us are old enough to remember when wewere firstintroduced to him some 25 years ago.IfI remember correctly, Lawrence Block described him at that time as a former cop turned private eye (sans license) who drank a lot and worried the same.A quarter of a century can bring about many changes, and those years have made their mark on Matthew Scudder.

Happily for listeners "All The Flowers Are Dying" is read by the author himself.A four-time winner of the Edgar Allan Poe and Shamus Awards plus numerous other honors, Block has penned more than 50 books.Think you'll agree that his readingis also deserving of recognition. After all, who knows Matthew Scudder better than the man who created him?Block delivers nuances and chills with the aplomb of a trained actor.

As our story opens there's a man awaiting execution in a Virginia prison. He received the death penalty on the basis of massive evidence, yet he maintains that he did not commit three gruesome murders.A psychologist has been interviewing the man, and completes his assignment by watching as the death sentence is carried out.

What seems to be a parallel plot develops as Scudder takes on an investigation. It's just the kind of job he likes now - no danger just some probing and then a paycheck. No such luck. The corpses start piling up and it seems that the next to die may very well be Scudder and his wife.Is there a relationship between the convicted killer and these murders?Could the psychologist be involved?

Listen as this master of suspense weaves one more of his spine tingling tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars Early Scudder, Still Great
Through no deliberate intent, I've been reading the Matt Scudder series backwards.I started with A Long Line of Dead Men (#11) then went on the Even the Wicked (#12) and that's all well and good (I've done the same thing with his Burglar series, having read #'s 4, 5, 6, and 7 in that order), but then I dropped back to Eight Million Ways to Die (#5) because it was the only audiobook my library had.

Now I've come to #2, this book. It's very interesting to see Scudder's life in this way, because I already have insight into his future actions. In the later ones, Matt is a recovering alcoholic, in Eight Million, he begins his treatment after deciding to do something about it.However, in Midst, he doesn't yet seem to be aware that he even has a problem.Although he's never far from his next drink, when someone mentions the word "alcoholic," he rationalizes it away.

The mystery is never the reason to read Lawrence Block (even though I'm sure he wouldn't appreciate that because he works hard to create the mystery), it's the characters. And Scudder is not exception.I don't even remember what the mystery was in Eight Million Ways to Die, but it stand out as my favorite because of the way Block writes about Scudder's struggle with realization.

Matt Scudder is one of the most interesting characters in fiction, but I haven't read all his books because they are invariably dark and I have to be in the mood for them. But read them I will.

A note on the audiobook presentation:Alan Sklar's voice fits this material nicely. This is a wonderful addition to the Chivers Audio presentations of Block's works. The only one I liked more was Block's own reading of Eight Million Ways to Die. ... Read more

Product Description
The New Testament is a Jewish book and no part of it is more Jewish than the Gospel of Matthew-the story of how God fulfilled His word to Israel and sent them His Messiah, who in turn carried out the work of redemption. The Gospel of Matthew was written to prove to the Jews that Jesus of Nazareth is indeed the Christ, the fulfillment of their Scriptures. It contains the most thorough and organized presentation of Christ's teaching anywhere in Scripture. Thus the Gospel of Matthew is like the Christian Torah, the record of God's words and deeds through Christ. Matthew's Gospel also stresses the Church, since it is the true Israel, the holy remnant, whose message is to be taken to Jews (and Gentiles) everywhere.Other books in the Orthodox Bible Study Companion Series: Shepherding the Flock: The Pastoral Epistles of St. Paul the Apostle to Timothy and to Titus: 978-1888212563Universal Truth: The Catholic Epistles of James, Peter, Jude, and John: 978-1888212600The Gospel of Mark: The Suffering Servant : 978-1888212549 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A choice pick for religious readers and collections
There is no religion more closely related to Christianity than Judaism. "The Gospel of Matthew: Torah for the Church" discusses the Gospel of Matthew, which the author describes as the most profoundly Jewish book of the New Testament. Calling it a Christian Torah, Lawrence R. Farley brings readers much in the way of thoughts and ideas to make up those missing links between the Old and New Testaments. "The Gospel of Matthew" is a choice pick for religious readers and collections. ... Read more
