4-0 out of 5 stars A STRAIGHT-RAZOR STORY
"Two-Lane" is an absorbing read.

It begins as a straight-razor of a story that slices through the Nevada desert. This is geography I know, and Nathan's characters are just the kind of losers and lowlifes, misfits and miscreants, outlaws (who may be heroes) and criminals (who never are) that do in fact inhabit this parched world. Those of us who know the Mojave call them "desert rats."

"Two-Lane" begins with a runaway girl heading directly for trouble in the sordid off-the-strip fringe of Las Vegas. Into the mix comes a couple from Chicago, Jack and Laura, making a last-ditch effort to strike a spark back into their moribund relationship.

The story takes us from the hard-edged, but defined city, out into the soul-crushing vastness of the open desert. Here the sun cooks up triple-digit temperatures in a world without water. And in this infinite solitude, when something goes wrong, it is a usually a death sentence.

This landscape is home to poisonous spiders, snakes and scorpions - and terrifying human predators.

Then there is Boots, a dirty little hermit who speaks a scruffy lingo that never darkened a school's doorway. He rescues the big-city couple and they find themselves marooned in the endless nowhere. Jack and Laura wonder: did this troglodyte bring them here to save them, or does he have a sinister agenda? And what of his relationship with a pair of heartless killers that prowls the desert? They already have one young girl trussed up in a cave, and they are looking for more victims.

But then a supernatural element breathes into the knife-edge story. It comes like a sudden storm that brews over the desert mountains. Eventually, the reader finds himself in no less than a ditheistic duel for control of all things.

Humans in Henrion's landscape are particularly puny creatures, whose lives are as easily crushed as a beetle under a boot. Jack in particular is a man whose cowardly selfishness makes him hardly worthy of redemption. Only in the desert's blast-furnace will he discover if there's still enough man left in him to drag him back from the very brink of "Two-Lane's" hell.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced Suspense Novel From An Indie Author
Two Lane is a great, fast-paced read.

Although the paranormal aspect of the book did confuse me a bit at first. But once I figured it out, I thought it was an approriate way to convey the theme. The characters are well developed, and multi-dimentional. The dialogue seemed realistic, but I did get a little tired the old man's butchery of the english language. To be fair, that must have been difficult for the author to keep him in character, talking like that. It's just a personal irrantant of mine, nothing against the writing or the dialog.

What a great bargain, though. This book is worth well more than the $.99 it is priced at now. Snap it up!

I am looking forward to the author's next book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A supernatural Jack Ketchum
If you like dark and violent crime fiction in the mode of Jack Ketchum, Dennis Lehane, and Joe Lansdale, you'll enjoy this briskly paced suspense thriller. It has some paranormal spice and a strong, if a bit raw, storytelling voice. Henrion has potential and I look forward to following his evolution as he hones his craft and masters his natural storytelling abilities.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars
Plot/Storyline: 3 3/4 Stars

This novel began with an excellent tension building scene, then switched to another one of good suspense. The storyline holds up well and builds at a decent pace.

The description on the Amazon page does not mention the supernatural element in this story. Personally, I was irritated by that as I didn't think I was purchasing something with a supernatural element to it. Also, that element does not become evident until about halfway into the book. Up to that point, it seems to be a relatively straightforward suspense/thriller. The addition of a being that can appear and disappear at will almost seemed to be something thrown in at the last minute in an attempt to make the story more interesting, but it was completely unnecessary. The story and plot would have held up just as well, if not better, without that addition.

I did not deduct stars because the book had that supernatural element. However, I did deduct them because that portion was not threaded into the storyline properly.

The book was fairly fast-paced and kept me enthralled throughout. The ending was satisfying, though somewhat simplistic and predictable.

Character Development: 4 Stars

The author did almost too good of a job portraying Jack as a self-centered jerk as, by the end, I was almost wishing he would die. That's not a bad thing. He was just one of those characters that you love to hate.

His wife was a little less well done as I think the reader was supposed to sympathize with her, but at times she just came across as a nagging witch. However, she still evoked some empathy at times.

The bad guy was great. Although, I would have enjoyed his portions more had "Seth" been different. That's all I will say here to avoid spoilers.

The teenage girl was rather weak. I felt sorry for her in the abstract, but never really got a personal feel for her.

Writing Style: 4 Stars

Aside from an occassional dangling participle, which made for a little confusion, the sentence structure was pretty good with great flow. The descriptions were tight for the most part. They got a little flowery at times, but it never interfered with the story.

The downfall here was some of the dialogue. Boots speaks in an odd dialect that really got old trying to decipher after awhile. It also just seemed to be strained and overbearing. The other character dialogue was mediocre, never really attaining good voice.

Editing: 2 Stars

The editing was sorely lacking. There was a lot of missing punctuation, a few homophone issues, and some missing words. At one point, the wrong character's name was used making me flip back (especially annoying on a Kindle) to see if I missed something, but it wasn't me, just a mistake in the print. These errors really detracted from the reading experience.

Rating: PG-14 for Violence

5-0 out of 5 stars A Paranormal Thriller that keeps you on your toes!
This book was shared with me and I got it for my iPhone Kindle. I couldn't stop reading it!

Nathan seems to coined his own unique writing style which puts him on the road(pardon the pun) to being an American great. His scenic descriptions kept me in the moment, as if the movie for this had already been filmed. I really enjoyed the changes of scenes within a sequence, jumping from one serious pilo-erecting situation to the next at the very moment that all he'll is about to break loose. This made the reading pass by quickly... Ha! It's like written for the A.D.D. reader in all of us.

The character development had good build up, and not do you start to empathize with the Hero, but I also found myself rooting for the villan as well. The content might be a bit gruesome for young readers, the faint of heart, and those with a weak tummy..,but I enjoyed!

There a few editing issues, that my other friend said had been cleared up later (I think I got a pre-sale copy or something), but it doesn't at all distract from the content keeping you on the edge of your seat.

Check it out, and seriously for 99 cents... It was well worth the cost of a McDouble.

Product Description
The war was looking bleak for the American colonists. General George Washington and his army had just barely escaped destruction at the Battle of Brooklyn, and now the mighty British fleet was preparing another attack. Washington desperately needed to figure out the enemy s plan. The only way to get the information he needed was to send a spy behind British lines. The soldier who volunteered to take the assignment was a twenty-one-year-old former schoolteacher named Nathan Hale. He became the first American spy executed in the line of duty, and his last words,I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country, became a rallying cry for the Revolution.Nathan Hale s courage in the face of death has become an enduring symbol of American patriotism. His willingness to sacrifice his life for the greater good stands as a powerful testament to the selflessness that turns ordinary men into heroes. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Who is truly the heavenly deceptor?
I have to admit that Teresa Jean Buford (born September 4, 1952 in Newport, Rhode, Island) had an upbringing that would explain your motives and actions during the Jonestown massacre. While those of us believe that it was mass murder, Terri's escape three weeks before November 18 did not go un-noticed or unaffected by Jones. He was terrified of her because she knew where the money which included millions of dollars. Terri's background as the daughter of a military commander and manic depressive mother further explained her dysfunctional background. She came from a nuclear family but there was more toxic in that household that was left largely unexplained in the book. For Terri, she is the story here. She fires back at her former lover and attorney, Mark Lane, in her book which largely goes un-noticed and is hard to get. It's one of the hardest books regarding Jonestown and the People's Temple. There are some interesting facts but there is also mis-information. For example, Steven Jones is really Stephan Gandhi Jones and he is the only biological son of Jim and his legal wife, Marceline Mae Baldwin Jones. It's always spelled as Stephan Jones because he was born 3 weeks after his adopted sister, Stephanie, died in a car accident. Anyway, the book is vague on some notions. While some of us are quite suspicious of Terri Buford's answers, why didn't she get help for Jonestown when she disappeared or plead for assistance to save the lives of over 900 men, women and children. A third of the population were kidnapped children. Of course after Jonestown destruction on November 18, 1978, California and other government agencies had failed to investigate Jones and his operation before he moved to Guyana in summer of 1977, I suspect that Moscone's election in 1975 was won voter fraud. Jones was a powerful ally in San Francisco politics that he would send his followers to campaign religiously for their political allies like Moscone. Milk was also a supporter of Jones and the People's Temple but you wouldn't know anything about it from the movie and it's downplayed to maintain his martyr status to the gay community. But the fact that Moscone and Milk were pretty much hiding after Jonestown displayed their cowardice. They could have done much more to help the survivors and the families. When Jonestown occurred on November 18, 1978, the damage was far worse than any earthquake in California history. Jones had connections and millions of dollars and Terri Buford was his right-hand person, lover, and partner until she herself disappeared. Unlike Deborah Layton who should be admired and revered as somebody who tried to stop the events of November 18, 1978 from ever coming to fruition, Terri Buford is haunted and rightfully so by Jones himself. She became one of his heavenly deceptors and a willing contributor to the horrors of Jonestown such as the punishment, humiliating catharthic sessions, heavy workloads, and poor diets. She was one of the privileged few could have done so much more but now has to live with herself. In the end of the book, she is compared to the fictional character, Sophie, from William Styron's book, "Sophie's Story." Terri is plagued by guilt for leaving her foster son behind and saving herself and being part of a concentration camp. I don't blame Terri's actions because unless we are in her situation, we could never imagine what she was going through. She was 26 years old in 1978. After Jonestown, she tried to escape her past and became a mother of Vita whose father is Mark Lane. She had a relationship with Mary Weiner but it dissolved after some years. Terri is haunted by her past and haunted by those she left behind in Guyana and Jim Jones himself. He haunts her dreams because he hasn't forgiven her betrayal and her abandonment. I wonder what Terri could and should have done but it's too late now. She will always be haunted by her past, Jonestown, and the People's Temple.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
While this book is interesting in that the author purports to have interviewed Terri Buford, his constant mistakes throughtout the book throw doubt on much of what he says. While some of his errors are clearly nothing more than typographical problems (ie incorrect footnoting that sends you to the wrong reference), other problems are factual in nature and greatly problomatic. He bases part of his assumption that Jim Jones was killed by the inner circle, on his statement that JJ was shot from a great distance. This is incorrect. While it is certainly true Jones may have been killed by someone else, if he was, it was done up-close and personal. He was shot at point-blank range.Other "facts" that Landau presents are equally false or, at best, misrepresented.

If you want a conspiracy-laden theory of Jonestown that indicts Mark Lane, this book is for you.If you want a well-researched, factual account, try instead "Raven" by Tim Rieterman, far and away the seminal work on the subject.

I would have given this book only one star, but frankly it was nice seeing someone sticking it to Mark Lane whose book "Strongest Poison" is some of the most self-aggrandizing claptrap it has ever been my misfortune to come across.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unexplored Information
I found this book to be riveting because it was written with the full cooperation of Terri Buford, who was not only one of Jim Jones Mistresses but also very high ranking in the Peoples Temple. Terri had enormous power and prestige in the group. She cleverly decieved Jim Jones and made her escape from Jonestown 3 weeks before the massacre. This book gives you access to her life story and intimate knowledge of Jonestown and Jim Jones.
A lot of revelations are made in this including that for most unlucky residents it wasn't mass suicide , it was mass murder. And it was planned thay way by Jones and his inner circle, Jones didn't plan to die in Jonestown, his escape plan with his favorites ect.
In the other 3 Jonestown books I've read so far, Buford has been treated as an valuable, but somewhat minor player. This book rips that myth.
Its a must for Jonestown buffs or anyone that wishes to get a fuller, more truthful picture of Peoples Temple and its end.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I read it.
This book has a lot of interesting information in it, but the author obviously has an axe to grind that gets in the way of what he is trying to say. That doesn't make his information any less interesting or credible, at least some of it.In fact, I found a lot of what he had to say actually made the case he was trying to dismiss.Confusing? If I hadn't already done a lot of reading about Jonestown prior to this book, I would be too. Nevertheless, I'm glad I read it, and would recommend it as an adjunct to any other research on the subject.
