Best ofthis genre!
Dozens of books have been written about JFK Jr. but this book is different.I liked the factual historical approach of this book:the glamourization and controversial slant of most books about the Kennedy's is thankfully missing.This book provides a good role model for developing compassion in children.He had it all; but still, he had a good heart! Frankly I enjoyed this refreshing story and who could forever forget the haunting portrait on the cover.

Great firsthand account of the Kennedy Years
This book is one of the most thorough firsthand accounts of the Kennedy administration and takes an almost exhaustive look at many of the things that occurred during the administration. While some of the conclusions have been tempered with history and new evidence coming to light (particularly on the Bay of Pigs and the Civil Rights record) this is still considered the definitive book on the Kennedy years in the white house and should deserve that distinction.Schlesinger who served as a special advisor to the president (much like Ken O'Donnell of Thirteen Days fame) provides a unique view to a complicated man, politician, and president.Kennedy offered hope to a generation of Americans and by extension to many people of the world. He was firm yet promised compassion through his negotiations with the Soviets, Peace Corps and commitment to Civil Rights.

While there are a few points in the book where Schlesinger props up his own importance at a particular point and digresses for about 50 pages or so the remainder of the book is very spot on with what was occurring, why decisions were made and what the effects of those decisions were. Sadly Schlesinger was not as involved in the Executive Committee (Ex-Com) as other special assistants were so much of what has happened at that point was not related in this book and the role that the committee played is kept to almost a minimum.I will point out that even as a Republican I found the book fair and while lacking in detail at some points it is still the most complete work that is published on Kennedy and to those who claim bias: the man worked in the Kennedy administration so take that bias into account as you read and enjoy a firsthand look at a complicated presidency and pivotal point in American history.Overall well worth the time to read.

Good but could have been better
Schlesinger is a first-rate historian, and this book is not a compromise to his reputation. It contains great some great details about Kennedy's turmoils involving Cuba, the Soviets, and Vietnam. I do not rank it higher because: (1) It is excessively long. This book could have been edited down by at least 250 pages; (2) It contains no photographs; and (3) It makes no speculation about the assassination. Schlesinger only dedicates a couple of sentences to it, which suits the book's title fine but leaves a lot to be guessed. It would have been quite easy for Schlesinger to have laid some groundwork for the shooting. During the course of the book he could have pointed out the number of sources of power within America alone that did not like JFK and the change he brought with him. J. Edgar Hoover was not fond of the president (and hated Bobby), and at this point the tie between Hoover and the mafia is pretty solid. Schlesinger makes absolutely no comment about this, which made me wince while reading it. Overall it is a good book, however. An insightful view from an authoritative mind.

A true historical classic.
I had taken an interest in Arthur Schlesinger when he passed away.I picked up a copy of his book, "A Thousand Days:John F. Kennedy in the White House" from a used book shop in NYC.I had known that this was an award winning book.After Mr. Obama's election, I decided to read this book to find common threads between the Presidency of JFK and Mr. Obama.I was suprised by the similarities of these two men and their message.I strongly urge that Mr. Schelsinger's work be read by the historian and the non-historian.Although it is a big book, it had a good flow.

A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House
History written by a participant in its making.This narrative is as objective as one could be given the close relationship the author had to President Kennedy.A perspective du jour doesn't lessen this review of a pivotal thousand days in American history.

Still the best
Still the definitive political biography of JFK. As more recent evidence has emerged of Kennedy's decisions and actions as president (as opposed to his private life), Schlesinger's basic view, that Kennedy was an extraordinary man and the US was lucky to have had him as its leader (especially in October 1962) is increasingly confirmed. The absolute starting point for anyone even vaguely interested in the Kennedy administration or American political history.

Thanks Mr. Littell
You are a lucky man Mr. Littell and you share your story well. I've read alot of Kennedy books and I found your account of your friendship with JFK Jr. the best. I read it in one sitting. From most accounts John sounded like a great guy who handled his lot in life with grace and charm. For you to have such access to him and his family was obviously quite an experience and you shared it honestly and accurately. Thanks for you story and I hope all is well with you and your family.

A sweet, true story
This is a very ordinary memoir about two young men in extraordinary circumstances. Rob & John became buds at school and grew up together. Roommates, groomsmen together, friends to one another's families, and finally, Rob was one of John's honorary pallbearers. The JFK Jr in these pages is a regular guy, something he worked very hard to be. His mother loved him and was involved with his friends (I loved how she prepared for Rob as a dinner guest), his big sister loved him and loved to tease him, and he fell in love with a beautiful blonde named Carolyn who had trouble adapting to his fishbowl existence. It's not a 4-star, definitive biography. But it is a sweet, genuine memoir of a 20-year friendship that took them from 18 to 38, from childhood to manhood and death.

Nice memoir about the real person, and not just the media prince
It was a nice reflection on a friendship that spanned yrs, and obviously meant a great deal to both parties.I don't think the author exploited the friendship - rather he really wanted to let people know that the person behind all the pictures was a decent, caring human being.If you are a Kennedy fan, you will enjoy this read.

A book from a guy retelling a few memories of a friend
If you're looking for dirt in this book you might want to go with a different book. There isn't a negative thing written mostly because, as far as I can tell, John was a great guy; funny, kind, every nice thing you can think of that was JFK Jr. There isn't even anything bad about Carolyn.

I didn't grow up really knowing who John was (too young for tabloids) and remember his death but didn't really pay much attention to it (I remember watching endless coverage of Diana's death but not much of John's). After reading this book however I can understand the loss people felt when he died. He was an extrodinary human being not just because he was JFK Jr. but because he was amazingly kind, humble and seemed like an all around great person. I would even say he was a greater man than his father, not because of his accomplishments but for the type of human being he was. It's amazing someone like him could have grown up to be such a down to earth person.

The book isn't very long, you'll probably be able to finish it in one sitting. It doesn't go in chronological order and is mostly broken into subjects. The best way to describe this book is it's a book written by a man sharing the few memories he has of his friend. Most of it takes place in Martha's Vineyard and Brown, it doesn't really delve very deeply into subjects or into descriptions. There isn't too much dialouge and I woudn't classify this as an indepth biography, more like fluff. Even the most important time, his death and after, spans maybe 10-15 pages. There isn't much detail into the people in John's life, few bits of Jackie and not much about the women he dated. I've started to read Billy Noonan's book and can see a big difference in the two (Noonan seems like an a-hole but there's more dialouge and more of John seems to be revealed. I haven't finished it so I can't give a definitive answer but the 2 chapters I read so far show a lot more of what he may have been thinking or where he stood at that point in his life). There are a few pictures (10?) spread throughout the book but all are in black in white and aren't of great interest. You'll probably find better photos in a different book.

If you're like me and did not know a thing about John then you'll learn a few things. Be warned though you'll feel something pull at your heart knowing this great person is no longer around. If you already know all about him then maybe you'll take away one or two stories you never heard before. If your looking for something in depth go with another biography.

Don't be Hypocritical
I enjoyed the book and yes, much of what Littel writes would have been viewed as private by Mrs. Onassis, and such books, of which there are many about the Kennedys, she absolutely abhorred. Those reviewers who criticize the author for revealing certain things about JFK Jr. are hypocrits. What did they expect? What did they think the book was about? Come on, folks. It's a bit disengenuous to read this type of memoir and then take the author to task for writing it. Perhaps they feel guilty or voyeuristic and transfer those feelings to the author. Anyone interested in an intimate view of the Kennedys should read this. There are lots of stories not found in other books, which often just rehash events that are a part of the public record. ... Generation Xer says:"Good Read"
As a generation "Xer" this book intrigued me for one shallow purpose at the forthright.John F. Kennedy, Jr. was and will always remain in the public's eye as a sex symbol.I was glad that the author started out with something familiar when introducing her book.Beginning with the how and why of John's appointment to the sexiest man alive was something that I remembered and could identify with.Without any knowledge of the Kennedy "clan" as she terms them, and even less historical knowledge, I could identify with the placement ofJohn on the cover of People magazine.While I had heard of President Kennedy's allegedaffairs it came as a shock to see other members of the Kennedy family hold such little esteem for marriage vows. The author really brings Jackie Kennedy down to earth and sure makes me long for her happiness and admire the strength of such a delicate looking woman.She certainly isn't short on male companionship and some of her relationships leave you wondering why she didn't just go it alone.The details behind John's relationships are intriguing and the relationship with Madonna was particularly surprising to this reader. The author paints the picture of John being less than the smartest Kennedy but far outshining with his personality, athletic abilities, and Kennedy charisma.The well-known ending is tragic and left me with the same sinking feeling as I did watching the T.V. hoping his plane would be found or by some chance to find out he hadn't been on board at all.A good read for anyone wanting more information on the Kennedy family and most importantly on John Jr.

Not a good source for Carolyn Bessette information.
This back of the book cover led me to believe there would be interesting information on his wife, Carolyn. Ha! There was practically no information on his wife. I learned more about her in a single magazine article then from this book. It has the basic geographic info: born, lived, schooled. Boring. If you are a diehard JFK JR then go for it, otherwise there are much better books on him. If you are looking for Carolyn info, look elsewhere. Period.

Still mourning the death of an unforgettable man
This book had many good points, and I finished it fairly quickly. It made me laugh out loud, and at other poignant moments I cried. I enjoyed readingabout John's college exploits, his years as an assistant D.A. and detailsof his relationships with the ladies.It was vividly written, capturing myimagination in a way that presented me with a good sense of his splendidpersonality, in turn giving me an evengreater admiration of the man.Toomuch time, I think was devoted to his early childhood days, and I wasdisappointed that missing was a major portion of his later life after thedebut of GEORGE, and of his married life. I would recommend this book,though, to anyone wanting a keepsake to revisit the memory of our belovedJohn Jr.

This book does appear to offer a fairly accurate and close look at John Kennedy, Jr.But, it spends too much time discussing the Kennedys and Jackie.It should have focused more attention to the subject itself: John.A huge indiscrepancy is that John Jr. was born on Thanksgiving Day. Dramatic
Necessity is the result of invention.I realize the author is self-published.But once again his inquistional foresight surpassess the college or high school level perspectives of most ordinary persons.Onlyprofessional investigators or detectives know how difficult it is to thinkobjectively or detect foul play when least expected.More fruits orinsights to the author in this sometimes difficult job of trying to solve sophisticated crimes.May be other detectives can borrow from his way ofthinking when they get stalled in cases.
