Product Description
Lothar Schreyer's dramas from the expressionist periodical "Der Sturm" are collected in this anthology, together with 12 previously unpublished earlier works and 11 later dramas. The full extent of Schreyer's development as a dramatist is shown from his use of derivative forms, including ancient myth, the Narcissus theme, naturalism and farce, through his experiments in expressionist language, to his later religious works. This collection, with its long introduction, should be a useful tool for researchers into early 20th-century German drama. ... Read more

Product Description
Following the Modernisation Plan of 1955 the process of replacing British Railways' steam locomotives with diesel and electric traction rapidly took off. It soon became evident that some classes of locomotives would be allocated to specific regions. Thus, from the late 1950s onwards, the Scottish Region became home to a number of diesel classes not usually seen elsewhere on the BR network. Some of these, such as the future Classes 26 and 27, were successful and long-lived; others, such as the Class 17 Claytons and the North British-built Class 21/29s, proved less successful and were consigned to the scrap yard soon after the steam locomotives they were designed to replace.Although best-known as a photographer of steam, the late W J V Anderson was also interested in diesel traction. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he continued to record the railway scene after the final demise of steam. In 2005, Ian Allan Publishing produced "Scottish Steam", compiled by Anderson's son Keith and his close friend Brian Stephenson. This book was very successful and was reprinted within months. In "Diesels in Scotland", Keith Anderson and Brian Stephenson have returned to W J V Anderson's superb archive to provide a pictorial record of the early years of diesel traction in Scotland. Including both mono and colour photography, this book represents a unique portrait of diesel traction in Scotland over some two decades. ... Read more

Excerpt: "Mr. Cruel" is the name given to an Australian murderer and rapist who attacked girls in suburban Melbourne in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His name was revealed in 2004 to be Christopher Francis Cefala. He was originally known as The Hampton Rapist, and was later given his infamous Mr. Cruel moniker by newspaper sub-editors. Melbourne Police believe that he is responsible for a series of child rapes and abductions dating back to 1985. Mr. Cruel is believed to have videotaped or perhaps taken still photographs of his attacks. Detectives believe that if he is still alive, he will have kept the tapes and/or photos and will still collect, and possibly swap, child pornography. They say he almost certainly continues to collect pornography through the internet and may communicate with children using chat lines. He plans his crimes - for example, in one case he abducted a girl and told her he would release her in exactly 50 hours, and indeed he did. He bathed his victims carefully, with one victim describing the act as "like a mother washing a baby", and wiped benchtops etc. for fingerprints. Shortly before releasing one victim, he thoroughly cleaned the bathroom and then lay down a sheet on the lino-covered floor to avoid leaving footprints. In one case, he took a second set of clothes from the girl's home to dress her before she was freed. In another, he dumped the girl in garbage bags so police could not test her original clothes. The modus operandi is so similar in these cases that police believe it is the same perpetrator. Two of his victims were able to provide police with details of the house where they were kept. Both were shac...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3053757 ... Read more

Product Description

In The Nation’s Tortured Body Brian Keith Axel explores the formation of the Sikh diaspora and, in so doing, offers a powerful inquiry into conditions of peoplehood, colonialism, and postcoloniality. Demonstrating a new direction for historical anthropology, he focuses on the position of violence between 1849 and 1998 in the emergence of a transnational fight for Khalistan (an independent Sikh state). Axel argues that, rather than the homeland creating the diaspora, it has been the diaspora, or histories of displacement, that have created particular kinds of places—homelands.
Based on ethnographic and archival research conducted by Axel at several sites in India, England, and the United States, the text delineates a theoretical trajectory for thinking about the proliferation of diaspora studies and area studies in America and England. After discussing this trajectory in relation to the colonial and postcolonial movement of Sikhs, Axel analyzes the production and circulation of images of Sikhs around the world, beginning with visual representations of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last Sikh ruler of Punjab, who died in 1893. He argues that imagery of particular male Sikh bodies has situated—at different times and in different ways—points of mediation between various populations of Sikhs around the world. Most crucially, he describes the torture of Sikhs by Indian police between 1983 and the present and discusses the images of tortured Sikh bodies that have been circulating on the Internet since 1996. Finally, he returns to questions of the homeland, reflecting on what the issues discussed in The Nation's Tortured Body might mean for the ongoing fight for Khalistan.
Specialists in anthropology, history, cultural studies, diaspora studies, and Sikh studies will find much of interest in this important work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fair review butnot in depth analysis of the root causes and problems
Good try by a Western writer but not as good as Dr. Joyce Pettigrew who has given a in-dept analysis of the causes and the problem of the Sikh nation's struggle for Independence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Original topic, needs some morework
In this brilliantly conceived study the author tried to parse through Sikh history, memory and identity especially in relation to space and homeland. The view is towards examining the Sikh diaspora and its connection and use of pictures and imagined identitites to create the need for 'Khalistan' and the representation of Sikhs, from the last Sikh rulers to the tortured bodies fo Sikhs who were victims of the Indian police during the troubles in Punjab leading up to Operation Blue Star and desecration of the Golden Temple.

This is a very interesting and original book and that is why it deserves not only to be read but to be praised. However it lacks many things that although not pertinent to the subject could have been finally brought out here.THere does not exist one book in all the world in English that deals witht he millions of refugees caused by Pakistani ethnic cleansing in 1948, not one book on their fate and what that means to the Sikh nation, which was torn in half and had all its people cleansed and depopulated from Pakistan.

This is an understudied phenomenon, and becuase the Sikhs are not considered 'white' by the western-european world they get no attention the way the Palestinians do.However this book could have delved deeper into this important issue.

2-0 out of 5 stars Same as old edition
The 4th edition is essentially the same as the old edition, which can be had at significantly cheaper rates.

Pros: Divided by subject to focus on particular areas. Index is helpful. Question format is a nice change from other review forms.

Cons: There are quite a few errors that detract from quickly going through subjects and make explanations confusing. Many of the questions are low yield, just fact associations for memorization, rather than clinical situations promoting critical thought in a multistep process (as the exam does). Also, many of the questions are just absurdly difficult with explanations that leave one scratching their head regarding if there is anything to be learned from it that can be applied to clinical practice(but this is not too dissimilar from the actual ITE/ABA exam as I recall). Online feature is ho-hum at best. Find another review book if you can.

Personally, I would not buy this version again. There are better options out there for review.

4-0 out of 5 stars edition is old
I'm a little disappointed how old the edition is.Apparently in Oct. 2009 a new edition is coming out.The picture that is shown on Amazon is NOT for the old edition so it is misleading. If I had seen the picture of the book I actually received I would have realized it is an edition I had already used years and years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
This book does an excellent job of testing all relevant concepts. Some of the questions are artificially difficult and a little on the difficult side, but if you learn the answers your boards will be a success.I just finished the book for the second time and noticed a marked difference in my ability to remember the concepts that i had seen before.i definitely recommend this question book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Review Book

5-0 out of 5 stars I like to read to get away from it all...
The Redwall and Mossflower Woods books are one of those rare series of books that will allow you to escape the daily grid and responsibilities. Each one I've read allowed me that bit of escape by taking me to a wonderfully crafted alternative world every bit as detailed and wonderful as Tolkien's Hobbit and Ring Series.Kids of all ages can enter this world. Enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mossflower
Every once in awhile I like to give my brain a break from the "heavier" reading and pick up something that is just plain fun. It's the reason I read all the Harry Potter books and it was the reason I decided to pick up Mossflower, the second book in Brian Jacques Redwall series. The book is actually a prequel to Redwall where we met Mathias Mouse and learned of the legendary Martin the Warrior. In this installment, we are taken back to a time when Mossflower Woods and its Woodlander inhabitants are in great peril-they are ruled by a ruthless wildcat named Tsarmina-Queen of a Thousand Eyes and her minions. Tsarmina and her forces make life miserable for those living in Mossflower Woods and around the fortress of Kotir. Tsarmina will do anything to achieve her means-poisoning her father, throwing her own brother in the dungeon and waging all out warfare on the woodlanders.

The real trouble begins when the soldiers start to take all the food from the woodlanders leaving them nothing to survive on. The woodlanders flee and the Tsarmina and the soldiers wage war on them after realizing they cannot live without the labor of the woodlanders which provided them food. A young Martin the Warrior wanders into the territory by mistake and is captured by Tsarmina. While in the dungeon he meets Gonff the prince of mouse thieves who helps him escape. Martin vows to help the woodlanders defeat Tsarmina and her forces-even agreeing to go on a quest to Salamandastron Mountain to find the great Boar the Fighter who disappeared long ago and who appears to be the only hope of the Mossflower inhabitants. The plucky critters have many grand adventures along the way.

I cannot believe I enjoyed a book about talking animals so much, but then again I did like Watership Down when I read it in high school too. The books are slightly reminiscent of WD. I can't believe I never discovered this series growing up, especially since he started writing it in the mid-80's. The only thing I recommend if you are going to try out this series is you have to read it from the perspective of a 12 year old. What I mean is, a person around that age reads for the enjoyment of the story and doesn't notice when problems ties themselves up neatly each and every time or that there are so many characters that you have to keep reading the series to truly get to know each one better. If you go at it from an adult perspective these things may grate but these novels are meant to be read for fun and escapism and not analytically.

What I loved most was that even though the characters weren't well defined given that there was so much plot going on, they each had their own distinct personalities and there were several new characters to get to know as I suspect there will be in all subsequent installments. There is so much going on there is not a chance of getting bored. I can definitely see me sitting down and reading this series with my son in a couple of years.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome read
My 11 year old can not get enough of the adventure and mythical creatures. He loves to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic collection for any child's library
Great books for gifts;there are 16 (17?) in the series.A must for a child's library. A grandson started out reading this series in the 5th grade, and at 16 is awaiting further additions for his permanent library. I have now begun the series for another, younger grandson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book in the universe!
I have read many, many, great books. Mossflower would totally be at the top of the list! I started reading it, and I just couldn't put it down! The plot and characters draaw you in, until you fell like you are in Mossflower woods, helping Martin, young Dinny, and Gonff find Salamandstrom. This book is amazing, and I definitely reccomend it for ages 6 and up! ... Read more

Performance by Brian Keith Lewis

Everyone in Washington knows Madeleine and Jack Hunter. Maddy is an award-winning TV anchorwoman. Jack is the head of her network, an adviser to the President on media issues. To the world, theirs is a storybook marriage. Two brilliant careers. A long, loving partnership. But behind the locked doors of their lush Georgetown home, a very different story emerges. For as Maddy’s career soars, a bitter edge has crept into Jack’s words, a pattern of subtle put-downs, control, and jealousy that Maddy has always tried to ignore and deny. For Maddy, there are no bruises, no scars, only the daggers of fear, humiliation, and isolation. Their effect as powerful as the gun, the knife, or the fist, the wounds as deep. Through hard work, long years, and with Jack’s help, Maddy has become a role model and a star. It seems impossible to believe that a woman the nation idolizes lives in degradation and fear. Only Maddy knows the terror in her heart. Her secrets are well kept, sometimes even from herself.

Maddy’s journey to healing begins when the President’s wife offers an extraordinary opportunity, the chance to join her newly formed Commission on Violence Against Women. There, Maddy hears chilling stories from terrified wives and girlfriends that sound eerily familiar. And there she comes to know Bill Alexander, a distinguished scholar and diplomat who also works on the commission. Bill suspects that something is terribly wrong in Maddy’s marriage and begs her to open her eyes. And as Maddy slowly, painfully takes the first steps toward freedom, as she and Bill grow closer, a remarkable series of events begins to unfold...a stranger from Maddy’s past suddenly reappears...White House headlines bring the nation to a standstill...and a devastating tragedy occurs, forcing Maddy to realize just how much she has lost and how much has been taken from her—her confidence, her trust, her self-respect. As she is faced with the most difficult choice of her life, Maddy’s extraordinary journey comes to a close, and with it comes a strength she never knew she had and a gift she never could have expected—a gift that will change her life forever.

Set against a vivid backdrop of world-shattering events, Journey is a book about abuse, in its subtlest forms. The powerful effects that last a lifetime. With wisdom and compassion, bestselling novelist Danielle Steel reminds us that no one is exempt from the effects of this devastating disease, which crosses social borders, has no respect for money, power, or success. But at its core, Journey is a book about hope, about change, and about daring to be free.Amazon.com Review
It's amazing to think that Journey is Danielle Steel's 50th novel. What's even more amazing is the high standard she has maintained throughout all her books: when an author is this prolific, there is usually a falling off in inspiration, but Steel seems able to add new elements to each book that keep the level of invention fresh. Journey uses elements familiar from earlier Steel bestsellers, but manages a totally novel spin on the private problems of a very public marriage.

Madeleine and Jack Hunter are one of Washington's glittering couples. Jack is the head of a TV network, while Maddy is an award-winning anchorwoman. All around, people regard them as a golden couple: he advising the president on media issues, she at the top of the tree in her profession. Needless to say, the relationship we are shown behind the closed doors of their lavish Georgetown home is far more troubled than the public could ever know. As Maddy enjoys more and more career success, Jack's resentment and desire for control grow daily, and her life becomes hell in this fracturing marriage. Steel manages, as always, to convey character in concise paragraphs:

The diamond studs and her eight-carat engagement ring were her prize possessions. Not bad for a kid from a trailer park in Chattanooga, she often admitted to him, and he called her "poor white trash" when he wanted to really tease her. It was obvious that he thought calling her that was funny...
When Maddy joins the president's wife in the latter's newly formed commission on violence against women, the grim stories she hears from other terrified wives start her on a journey which will help her break the cycle of fear she is living through. Steel makes this situation resonate with a strong emotional impact, and the dark marriage is painted with the kind of skill we have come to expect from her. When Bill Alexander, a high-flying scholar and diplomat, enters the narrative and realizes what is happening in Maddy's marriage, the story is taken to a powerful new level, with their growing affection treated intelligently and sympathetically. --Barry Forshaw ... 3-0 out of 5 stars STEEL NEEDS TO CLEAN UP HER ACT
I enjoy Ms. Steel's books."Journey" was no exception.THe story moved at a fast pace, although a bit repetitious as is the Steel formula. Her research on the subject of battered women and the reasons they stay with their husbands was well done. She did her homework.

The story needs more character development and insights into the motivations behind these characters. For example, the character of Jack Hunter, Maddy's husband.....providing background on him and his childhood would make the reader understand his motivations and why he treats Maddy the way he does.

There are a lot of incidental characters in this novel that are just "fluff".

But the one thing that really annoys me about Ms. Steel and her formula is the vulgar, bad, obscene, language.Using explicit language does not add anything to the story. She could very easily write an engrossing story without including offensive languange. She is a filthy writer and needs to clean up her act in this aspect.

Other reviewers have already also mentioned that her poor grammar and her overuse of conjunctions and sentence fragments are a part of the "Steel formula".Does her publishing company not have an editor that can correct these problems because they detract from the flow of the book.

One other annoying thing. In all of her novels I find that her using the shortened names of the characters...for instance Maddy is called "Mad" is irritating as all get out.She does this in every novel. Its appropriate for some names but not for others. If I had a name like Madeleine or Maddy I certainly would not want anyone calling me "Mad".

I'm nitpicking here.Aside from these annoyances which are all part of the way Steel writes, the story is good, does not drag but I find that a lot of times, towards the end, she wraps everything up much too quickly. In this story, for example, I would have loved to have seen Maddy take Jack to court and give him his just desserts. The author was not successful in tying this up.Only a couple of paragraphs were devoted to this and it would have given the reader the satisfaction of knowing that she triumphed over him.I would have loved to have been told of his reaction when the courts cleaned him up and would have relished a final confrontation between the two of them showing her emerging as a strong woman and him a defeated man.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Journey" a saving story for those in a emotionally abusive relationship
I have shared this book with several people who are currently going through an emotionally abusive relationship. It helps to know that they are not alone and what they are going through is actually abuse and control and there is hope for a way out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too repetitive, too long, --too bad.
Were do I start. This long 353 page book could have easily been 100 pages shorter. The highly charged subject matter of verbal and emotional abuse is very absorbing, but the author Danielle Steel, is continuously repeating herself over and over again. The main character Maddy Hunter is a very well known T.V. anchorwomen, married to her husband Jack, who is head of the TV network. Jack "rescued" Maddy from a previous abusive marriage and now jack is verbally abusing Maddy. The story seemed too "fake", too bad Danielle Steel's main character Maddy always seems to need the help of a man to get her out of bad situations. The unrealistic fairytale ending added to my dissapointment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beyond fiction
DS has churned out another predictable, improbable, formulaic story.Although she did credible job of trying to show the dymanics of abuse, her efforts were overshadowed by the unrealistic context. The entire adoption piece was ridiculous in every respectand was completely at odds with reality.Life is too short for such writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Journey
