5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
Well...I'm not sure I can say enough about this story. I loved it! The story line was very interesting. Reading about the orphans on the streets of New York in the early 1900's was heart wrenching and inspiring. I just wanted to adopt all of the children in this story. Sharlene doesnt' disappoint when it comes to uniqueness of plot and being able to keep me wanting more. The story and romance between hero and heroine was very believable and handled well. Boo Hoo...only one more book left to this wonderful series!

5-0 out of 5 stars Maggie Rose
I loved Maggie Rose. It was well written and historically accurate. Maggie is a strong compassionate young woman with a heart for orphans. She works hard at meeting the call of God on her life and when a newspaper reporter comes to live at Sheltering Arms Refuge, Maggie finds her world turned upside down.

Luke Madison was doing research on the orphans and escorted Maggie on the train out west to help find homes for the abandoned children. Maggie tolerates him, but remains steadfast on her assignment. He unnerves her.

This was a book of gentle romance and love that grows between a couple. I enjoyed it very much.

Once again, Sharlene MacLaren did not disappoint me and I was spellbound.

This book was given to me by Shar for review and I loved it.

Sincerely,
Paulette Harris

5-0 out of 5 stars Anxiously Awaiting Abbie Ann!
Sharlene MacLaren is my FAVORITE author in the world! No other author is more inspiring, captivating or entertaining!

I have had Maggie Rose for several months and put off reading it so that there wouldn't be too much of a wait for Abbie Ann.I couldn't put the darn book down once I picked it up, so here I am anxiously counting the months down until April!SEEMS LIKE AN ETERNITY!

Maggie Rose is such a heart-wrenching story. It makes you appreciate all that you have and yearn to do more for others. The will-she-won't-she romance between Maggie Rose and Luke is awesome.I love how MacLaren is able to work in God's plan so effortlessly.I always leave her books feeling so inspired and nourished in my faith.

I will be sad to leave Sandy Shores behind, but look forward to a new group of "friend" in Wabash, Indiana!

5-0 out of 5 stars Maggie Rose

MAGGIE ROSE is the second book in Ms. MacLaren's The Daughters of Jacob Kane series, but it easily stands alone.I enjoyed getting to know Maggie Rose, and all the other characters in this book. Luke is the stuff dreams are made of, strong, handsome, caring, and creative, and I couldn't help but fall in love with him. And the orphans...if only I could give them all a home.

The writing is strong, the story impeccable, with characters that become real one the page. This is a story that will move your heartstrings as you grow to love the children. MAGGIE ROSE is a strong story, that will stay with you. And the ending is simply delicious.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maggie Rose by Sharlene MacLaren -- LOVED IT!
Ms. Maclaren is a master storyteller. Each character is beautifully created and WILL stay with the reader for weeks after the final page is turned. Whether you are a parent or not, whether you are married or not, you will love Maggie Rose, the character, and Maggie Rose, the book.

The second installment of The Daughters of Jacob Kane Series, finds twenty-year-old daughter of Jacob Kane taking off for New York City. Maggie's intentions aren't to become famous, however. Her desires lead much deeper. God has led her to help in a refuge (Sheltering Arms) for street children. The children in this era are much like the children living on the street today, but with a twist. Because of the time period (1904), these children board the orphan train to find homes, and Maggie and a handsome young reporter find they have a great deal more in common than their shared love for the children.

Maggie Rose has a common thread running through it that had me returning to it rather than to the remainder of books in my reading stack. I often read multiple books simultaneously and love to offer reviews and book chats for my students and colleagues. This book offers hope for a situation that is still with us today. As a bonus, it gives the reader a healthy dose of reality AND a way to deal with some of the most harsh situations we can imagine. I loved it, and that's a hard sell for a reader who is NOT a big fan of historical fiction. But, this one ... it's special. Can't wait to go back and nab the first book in this series. And of course, I'll have to have the third. Thank you Sharlene MacLaren for this great read! ... Read more

The Lacy couple are very good writers. This novel is written to keep you thirsting for more!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good historical
Alan and Adam Kane were at the Alamo when Santa Anna and his army attacked. Colonel Travis sent Alan to take a message to General Sam Houston, asking for help. Alan made it through, but help came too late. His brother died with the others. Only Susanna Dickinson and her young daughter were allowed to leave. When Alan returns he is shocked at the massacre. Susanna suggests Alan's name be changed to Alamo, which I found rather jarring. Alan is in love with his brother's widow, and now he vows to take care of her for Adam. Santa Anna is still a danger and when General Houston calls for volunteers, Alan, and his brothers, Alex, and Abel, join. Now three Kane men are in danger. Al and Joanna Lacy are well known for their histoicals. Web of Destiny is book two in the Kane Legacy Trilogy. Readers who enjoyed A Line In The Sand won't want to miss this one. ... Read more

Product Description
This definitive and long-awaited edition of the C Version of Piers Plowman now joins the California editions of the A and B Versions to complete the set of Piers Plowman texts prepared under the general editorship of George Kane. Piers Plowman is the single most important Middle English poem, with the exception of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The forty-eight extant manuscripts of the poem are classified in three main versions: A, the earliest, written about 1362; B, a longer revision, written about 1378; and C, the most finished and public form, written about 1394. The basis of this edition is the text in Huntingon Library MS 143, corrected and restored from the evidence of all known manuscripts of the C tradition to that of the first fair copy of the poet's revision materials. The correction and restoration are described in an extensive introduction, and there is a full apparatus of variant readings. Two appendices cover excluded lines and passages and the Ilchester Prologue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a Catholic growing in Faith
I agree that this isn't a great text for beginning Catholics or those new to the Faith, but better for a Catholic looking for answers on Confession, Penance, Reconcilliation and Sin.The reflections on the 10 commmandments are great.Remember folks, the original publication date was 1943, pre-Vatican II.

5-0 out of 5 stars Difficult things
Thinking is difficult, and meditation is difficult, and meditative silence over a long period of time is very difficult, because we are in a society which doesn't allow for any of this.Television, movies, sports, all fill our brains and have done so since the 1950s.So to read a book for one's benefit which was written before that time is to enter a privileged world, a deep silence.I highly recommend this to anyone who desires to know God and himself better.I was not upset by either the writing style (which I thought very readable) or the Biblical innacurracies (the Mary things are debatable, and in all else, this was an incredibly Biblical book) but was challanged by the whole premise of repentance. Protestants gave up Confession long ago, and most Catholics only recently.Yet Christ says, "Unless you repent . . ."Maybe that's what's wrong with the world.

2-0 out of 5 stars Time To Set The Record Straight On Mary Magdalene!
Overall, this pocket sized book on how to make a proper confession is a great idea. Many Catholics don't realise just how important this is rather than to just go through the motions and hence not receive the full benefits of this wonderful sacrament. The typeset and font is of a great size too for easy reading and the compact size makes it very portable too.

However, the one thing that bothers me about this book is the blatant inaccuracy and inadvertent libel of one of our greatest saints, St. Mary Magdalene. In the bible, she is only described as one from whom Jesus expelled 7 demons. She is NOT the woman caught in adultery nor is she the one who cries over the feet of Jesus.CAN WE PLEASE STOP LIBELLING HER?

On page 77 of this book, the author clearly hasn't read his bible clearly as he continues this libel by saying that Mary led a life of sins of the flesh.Unless anyone can prove to me that being possessed by 7 demons is a code word for sins of the flesh, there is no where in the bible that states this.

I hope in future editions they will correct this great injustice and pray to St. Mary Magdalene to apologise for this great libel and injustice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the advanced reader
I purchased this book for someone new to the Catholic Faith and who wanted a better understanding of Confession--how to do it, the "procedure" of this beautiful Sacrament, points to examine ones conscious. They began reading the book and gave it back to me because the writing style/use of big words was too difficult. So I read the book myself and I wouldn't recommend it for the beginner, but it's very good for one a bit more advanced. This book spends most of it's time helping one to gain a deeper understanding of the gravity of sin.The appendix includes the "process" of Confession and many wonderful questions to examine ones conscious to each of the Ten Commandments.I kept the book and will read it again, but I would not recommend it to someone new to the Faith. ... Product Description
Michael O'Kane, an idealistic Catholic priest in the Scarborough Foreign Mission society, was ordained in 1953 and spent much of his priestly life in Brazil before he left to be married in 1988. This book is an intimate personal snapshot of life in the missions. It is particularly acute when O'Kane analyses with much perception the grave damage done by the Vatican to the church of the poor, not only in Brazil but in much of Latin America. His is a genuinely gentle voice which lamentably agrees with famed missiologist Jose Comblin that "all appointees of Pope John Paul II took as their mission to destroy anything their predecessor had accomplished." Among those harmed was the prelacy of Itacoatiara deep in the Amazon where O'Kane had worked with his great Hamilton-born colleague and bishop George (Jorge) Marskell. ... Read more

Kane explores the role of religious identity in Boston in the years 1900-1920, arguing that Catholicism was a central integrating force among different class and ethnic groups. She traces the effect of changing class status on religious identity and solidarity, and she delineates the social and cultural meaning of Catholicism in a city where Yankee Protestant nativism persisted even as its hegemony was in decline. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Elizabeth of the Trinity Pictorial
> Elizabeth of the Trinity is known throughout the world for her writings on Carmelite spirituality. But, in addition to her written work, a treasure was found in the archives of the Carmel of Dijon ~~ over 70 photographs of this young French nun. Thanks to photography, we are able to see Blessed Elizabeth in her times, in her family, in her Monastic community. We can see her as a child, an adolescent and a nun.In all of these stages of her life, we see a varied but yet a remarkably identical face ~~ a face with its clear, composed features. A face that is unified by her gaze.Elizabeth's gaze is almost always steady despite the long poses needed by photographers at that time. This album presents the face of someone who, during her life, had captured the attention of others because of the richness of her gaze. The extern sisters who were the first to greet Elizabeth said that the expression of her eyes immediately struck them ~~ so deep and so embracing. The Prioress (Mother Germaine of Jesus) observed in her expression and appearance a person who was perfectly calm and unconcerned with herself.Throughout this 144-page soft covered book, Elizabeth guides the reader and makes these wonderful photos come alive through well-chosenquotations from her diary, her letters, her poems and her spiritual writings. The photographs evoke and the text explains. There exist 50 negatives of Elizabeth (Catez) as a young girl. Some were taken at solemn moments in her life ~~ baptism, confirmation, Holy Communion, the "adieu" before entering Carmel. Others attempted to capture happy gatherings~~ trips, visits, vacations.Sometimes, they were the work of professional photographers. But, most of the time, these wonderful photos were the work of amateurs. On August 2, 1901, when Elizabeth entered Carmel, she never would have dreamed that 5 years later, the Carmel would possess 20 photographs of her as a nun. Her first photo as a Postulant dates only three days after her entrance when group photos were taken to celebrate the foundation of the Carmel in Paray-le-Monial. Shortly before this, Mother Germaine's brother had donateda camera to the Monastery. Around the time of each nun's profession, a photograph was taken to be given to the family.A copy was also kept in the Dijon Archives. There were two other occasions which gave the families the opportunity to photograph the nuns. The first was at the Clothing Ceremony when the postulant left the enclosure to embrace her family and to attend the first part of the ceremony with them.In Elizabeth's case, five negatives were taken of her. The second occasion was when the novice left the enclosure shortly before her Profession to be interviewed by the Bishop's delegate . After this interview, she could spend a couple of hours with her famly in the exterior quarters of Carmel. From this there are six negatives of Sister Elizabeth on December 22, 1902. This meeting with her mother and sister was a tearful one. In all probability, this was the last time the three women would ever embrace each other before Elizabeth would disappear behind the grille. Elizabeth has swollen eyes. Her new brother-in-law of two months took four negatives at this last family gathering. To be sure of a good picture of her Carmelite daughter, Madame Catez also hired a professional photographer. In this hour of emotion and suffering, Elizabeth does not seem ill at ease.Required to pose in a rather incongruous setting, she must have hoped it would be soon over. Her head is bowed. She is looking down. Her facial expression looks stiff and without sparkle. After the solemnity of her Veiling (January 1903), Elizabeth posed for her traditional "Profession" photograph ~~ in the traditional place (the garden) and in the traditional pose which includes holding a religious object. There were three attempts to get this pose right. This fact is known because her scapular and toque (coif) were secured by a pin and in each attempt, they are adjusted a little differently. Her sleeves are down and a bandage on her left finger covers the chilblains from which she suffered in the unheated Carmel. "LIGHT LOVE LIFE ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY: A Look at a Face and a Heart" includes 70 photographs of Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity ~~ 50 as a young girl and 20 as a Carmelite nun. In many of these pictures, faces ordetails are enlarged. However, none of the old proofs have been retouched, even if they bore marks of time: spots, scratches or cracking. In many ways, Elizabeth of the Trinity is similar to her Sister in Religion ~~ Therese of the Child Jesus.Like Saint Therese, Elizabeth's spirituality was formed on the Gospels.Elizabeth Catez was born in 1880 in France. Her father was a military captain. The eldest of two daughters, Elizabeth was a youngster when she first demonstrated a very hot temper. In frustration, her mother once threatened to send her to live with the Sisters of the Good Shepherd who ran a correctional facility for girls! However, after her First Holy Communion, Elizabeth overcame these tantrums. She was eight years old when her father died and her mother moved the family to Dijon where Elizabeth ~~ a talented pianist ~~ blossomed into a very Social Woman who enjoyed dancing, music and fashionable clothes. At this same time, however, Elizabeth also taught catechism to the children in her parish.Throughout this stage in her life, Elizabeth discoveredthat her love of Jesus far surpassed her love of worldly things. In 1901, she entered the Dijon Carmeland was given the name "Elizabeth of the Trinity."She died five year later with Addison's disease and was declared "Blessed" in 1984."LIGHT LOVE LIFE ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY: A Look at a Face and a Heart" is a fantastic pictorial! Its wonderful photographs bring Elizabeth to life and are a treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carmelite Spirituality
For anyone who is interested in Carmelite Spirituality and history, this is a must have book!A in-depth journey with Bl. Elizabeth of The Trinity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Single Source for Bible Study Maps
The `New Bible Atlas', assembled by a team sponsored by the UK company, Inter-Varsity Press of Leicester, England, with two distinguished `contributing editors', two equally distinguished `consulting editors', and an `organizing editor employed by the publisher is the kind of book which makes me wish I could pull a few stars from my ratings of similar books containing Biblical era maps and historical tables. My previous favorite source for maps was the Hammond `Atlas of the Bible Lands', which still wins the prize for their lushly colored physical maps underlying the political boundaries of the era being represented. Distant second places go to the Holman and Rose companies' offerings of maps, charts, and timelines, although the Rose `Book of Bible Time Lines' is a great source for teaching children and teens.
This `New Bible Atlas' has two things which put it head and shoulders over the nearest competitor, Hammond, and at least one or two things which make it stand out even better from Rose and Holman. The first virtue is the fact that there are many, many more different maps, covering in far greater detail the various periods of Hebrew history covering the time Joshua conquered Canaan to the period of Jesus' Apostles' travels. For someone like me who needs a plentiful supply of maps covering all the events and books of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures, this is, if I may say so, a Godsend! There are literally maps covering every change in political organization and most major military operations in ancient Palestine. The second virtue over Hammond is that almost all the maps are exactly the right size to scan into a document for a Bible Study class. There are many good maps in Hammond or in study Bibles which are too big, spread across two pages, or too small and lacking in detail, all of which make them inconvenient to scan on a home scanner, without destroying the book's binding. The third virtue, which sets it apart from Rose and Holman, is the level of detail. While the physical representations may not be as lush as Hammond, they are still excellent, giving a good sense of the geography of the stage on which the action took place. A second virtue over Rose and Holman is that the accompanying historical graphics are also superb for scanning, with a clean presentation and excellent details. There are many other Biblical atlases available, and I have not examined all of them; however many larger volumes called `atlases' are really picture books with lots of archaeological reconstructions and narrative history. This is great, but these volumes are also short on high quality MAPS! And when I buy an Atlas, I want MAPS, lots of them! And this book has got them. Thankfully, it also has a fair share of auxiliary information, but somehow, this stuff seems to be a perfect complement to the primary task of understanding history and geography of the region. Most interesting are those things which commonly appear in atlases covering geology, climate, rainfall, and agricultural use.
Getting back to maps, one of the few things I could not find is a map of the Roman empire showing which provinces where senatorial and which were imperial, or a map of population centers in the empire (although knowing that the three largest cities were Rome, Alexandria, and Antioch, in roughly that order, goes far to understanding population distribution in the time of Jesus.).
For a list price of under $30, this book may be worth more than `atlases' of the same period which have twice the heft or price. For Bible study, you may need maps from other sources for some purposes, but not many. This is great, if you can only own one book of Bible history maps!

Translated by Aletheia Kane, OCD. Includes major spiritual writings and General Introduction, plus 5 pages of photos.

Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity - Elizabeth Catez, who died in 1906 at the age of 26 in the Carmel of Dijon, is a mystic for our times, with a profound spirituality rooted not in visions and voices but in attention to the indwelling Trinity and in the call to become a praise of glory for God. This first volume of her Complete Works contains her major spiritual writings, including two sets of retreat notes (Heaven in Faith and Last Retreat) and her famous prayer - O My God, Trinity Whom I Adore. A comprehensive introduction to Elizabeth's life and spirituality by the editor, Conrad De Meester, is also included, along with detailed notes and 5 pages of photos. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elizabeth harvested!
This centenary series of the Complete Works is a major accomplishment.Volume I ('I Have Found God') goes right to the heart of Elizabeth's mystical vocation with a positively riveting General Introduction by Conrad De Meester, O.C. D., followed by a brilliant translation of Elizabeth's writings by Alethia Kane.Elizabeth's four major spiritual treatises being written in the last three months of her life, it's difficult to go anywhere but to the distinct heart of her message.I doubt that I've ever read a more enlightened essay on Elizabeth than De Meester's.If you look to understand who this woman was, read his perfect Introduction; taken together with a brief biography, he produces an ancient Elizabeth in an essential light. His appreciation burns with real insight into an obscured message and an authentic modern mystic.Kane leaves Elizabeth's voice alone, as other translators have not, making Kane's courageous, and ultimately peerless contribution the more valuable by leagues.Highest recommendation for Vols. I & II-- it's a champion series. ... Read more

Product Description
Among Christian evidences the heroic virtue and holiness of Catholic youth must not be overlooked. Juvenile and adolescent victories of a conspicuous kind, over the flesh, the world, and the devil, can be found in no land and in no age, except a Christian land and age, and in no Church except the Catholic Church. It is of all excellences the very rarest and most difficult, this triumphant mastery over human weakness and human pride. It has defied the life-long strivings of men whom the world recognizes as beings of superior wisdom and power of will. The philosophers who have described it most beautifully and encouraged its pursuit in the most glowing and impressive terms remain themselves sad examples of human futility in the struggle to disengage the spirit from the claws of dragging and unclean influences. For the forces of evil are infinite in their variety, insidious beyond the ability of natural sharpness to detect and guard against, and unsleeping in the pressure of their siege upon the heart of man. Who will explain how it comes to pass that youth, whose callowness and inexperience are the mockery of the world, has laid prostrate in single combat this giant of evil and won fields where the reputations of the world's wisest and noblest and most tried lie buried? ... Product Description
Jesus came to bring abundant life. Yet the burdens of the world and the desires of sinful man often cloud the freedom and joy that are supposed to be hallmarks of a Christian life. This book disentangles the web of deceit that teaches us to be content with the mediocre, narrow-minded life we imagine for ourselves in favor of the exceptional existence God has for us. It is a journey that forces the Christian to examine his beliefs about truth, faith, God, freedom, the self, media, education, family, and more. The liberation from this bondage lies in selfless commitment to God expressed through personal growth in the daily life of the family. Sustaining an abundant life hinges on a lifelong learning process that tests everything and holds to what is good.JM Kane was born in Portland, Oregon. Soon afterwards, his family moved to Thailand as missionaries. He spent 16 years split between Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines before returning to the United States to obtain a BA in Bible and Recreation from Houghton College. He has worked extensively with hurting youth for the past six years and has temporarily set that aside to hone his skills in business. He currently resides in Lemoore, CA with his family. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Old Testiment Prophets Were Unpopular, Too!
While on an online forum, I was drawn to a conversation in which the author of this book was taking an unpopular stand on an issue being heatedly debated. Not only were his views often different than the others on the forum, but he always had an answer for why he believed what he believed. I began to greatly respect his opinions and his willingness to stand for truth. When heard that he had written a book, I decided to check it out.

"Wounded Hearts, Broken Minds" covers a wide range of topics, with the all encompassing theme of embracing truth and exposing deception. Many of the things discussed were from a perspective I had never before considered. Some would call him too radical, but while I didn't agree with him on every point, I admire his desire to pursue righteousness. JM is a modern day prophet, a "whistleblower" in a dark and depraved generation.

If you want to be challenged in your thinking about education, media, politics and a host of other topics relative to Christian living, definitely check out this book. If you don't want to think, don't bother. As JM himself said, "I consider my book, not as a book of answers, but as a very personal journal...a documented journey through the realm of thought." Approached as such, it can be an encouragement to other believers.

4-0 out of 5 stars truth...
If the adversary can keep you from believing the truth - any truth - he will. I am convinced that he would not want you to read this book either. There is too much truth in it - too many lies revealed for what they are.
Wounded Hearts, Broken Minds is a book for those hearty souls who are willing to see things as they are. Using scripture to back his writing, JM Kane, skillfully points out the realities that young people and old alike are facing in this world. His views on media, education, culture, politics, health, religion and society are thought provoking and sobering. A must-read for every truth-seeker.

4-0 out of 5 stars Prepare to be Stretched!
"JM Kane has launched out into waters less traveled with the publication of his first book, Wounded Hearts, Broken Minds. Not for the faint of heart or dull of mind, this personal volume will enlighten and challenge its readers on many of our cherished institutions, our notions about life, and of God. Some may set is aside, labeling the author a 'pessimist'.Others won't put it down until they're finished, claiming the voice of a 'prophet' has spoken.Rest assured, there's no middle ground or neutral territory here.So whether you're new in the faith or you've walked with the Lord for some time, prepare yourself for a journey that will prod you to take action."

1-0 out of 5 stars Pop Psychology
I really do commiserate with what Victoria's been through. She has shown great strength in adversity and I commend her for that. However, this book really is pop psychology with a bit of Christianity infused. There is nothing biblically sound about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life changing
This book is life changing. It's a hands-on, practical guide to healing your heart and overcoming your past. I thoroughly enjoyed it! ... Read more
