5-0 out of 5 stars A great movie for the whole family
The Secrets of the Mountain is a story about a real family with real problems.

Somewhere between the demands of her career, her ex husband's wedding, and her kids busy schedules, Dana James (mom) realizes that her family is starting to fall apart. She is stressed. The older kids are constantly fighting. They aren't spending any quality time together as a family. Her family is crumbling before her eyes. When a mysterious buyer offers to purchase the family's mountain property, Dana jumps at the chance to head away from the stress of the day-to-day life and get away. She's hoping this little get away will be just what her family needs to pull together.Little did she know what surprises this trip would hold.Nothing is what it seems. The mountain holds an ancient secret. Will her family survive the ancient mystery of the mountain?

Secrets of the Mountain is a movie that held many twists and turns and held our attention for the whole movie. My daughter thought that it was a like a kid-friendly Indiana Jones type movie.I appreciated that it was a solid movie with good acting and no inappropriate material. My husband thought is was great to be able to watch an action/adventure movie that was suitable for our entire family.

While not an issue for us, I do need to mention that there are skeletons shown at one point in the movie, so this may be scary for some children. In addition, the beginning of the movie shows a vehicle crash.Once again, while this was not a big deal for us, I wanted to bring it to your attention.

It was refreshing to watch a movie that focused on the family and building good family relationships. It shows the importance of standing up for family and forgiveness for past mistakes.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this movie in exchange for an honest review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Family Movie
This is a great film for families to enjoy together. It emphasizes the value of relationships and standing up for friend/family members. This film may not be appropriate for really little children; there are a couple scenes that are rather graphic (human remains etc.). I recommend parents to view the film before letting really small kids about 7 and under to watch it. But all in all a very good movie. ... Read more

Product Description
Growing up in the west Michigan resort town of Sandy Shores in the early 1900s, Hannah Grace, the eldest of Jacob Kane's three daughters, is feisty and strong-willed, yet practical. Between working at her father's general store and courting the town's physician, Ralston Van Huff, Hannah has her life planned out in an orderly, meaningful way. Or so she thinks.Hannah's world turns upside down when the new sheriff comes to town.Gabriel Devlin is strong, outspoken, and a Christian, to boot-but he's sworn off women, having met ones mostly interested in money and apathetic about God.Determined to ignore the newcomer's handsome looks, Hannah is drawn to him nonetheless by a shy, runaway orphan boy named Jesse. While Hannah works to befriend the shy vagabond, who's living with Gabriel until other arrangements can be made, God works in her heart. What plans does He have in store for this young woman who thought she had it all together? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'D GIVE IT A HUNDRED STARS IF I COULD
I always feel blessed when I win anything, especially an autographed book. The only downfall is the pressure of whether or not I'm going to like the story, knowing the nice thing would be to later let the author know what I thought of it. Having never read any of Sharlene MacLaren's books added to my worries.

I admired the front cover of HANNAH GRACE for a while before opening the book to the first page. It only took me HALF A PAGE to realize any fears of not liking Sharlene's writing, to disappear. By the end of the first chapter I knew not only was she an amazing writer on so many levels, I was quickly falling in love with the characters.

I love to have a picture of the hero on the cover. It bothers me to not know what he looks like beyond the story description. The front cover of HANNA GRACE is wonderful, though I missed not having the hero on there as well. Upon day two into reading this wonderful book, I turned it over to study the back cover. To my utter surprise, there in the shadows was the hero! What a wonderful surprise that was.

As an aspiring writer, I was blown away by the great lines Sharlene delivered with humor that easily flowed rather then feeling forced and stiff. The hero and heroine were everything you'd want in a character, and so much more. You were even given a sense of who Hannah's sisters were, leaving you wanting to read their story as well.

I'll be ordering the other two books in this series, DAUGHTERS OF JACOB KANE, MAGIE ROSE and ABBIE ANN. I can't wait to get started on them. Sharlene has now made my list of favorite authors for I'll be looking for more of her great books in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful talented author!
After reading Sharlene MacLaren's Little Hickman Creek series I was thrilled to find there was yet another series by this amazing author. This first book in the Daughter's of Jacob Kane did not disappoint me. I very much enjoyed the romance between Hannah Grace and her hero. The author drew me in from the first chapter. I would love to live in a town like this and be a part of a family like the Kanes. I can't wait to start the 2nd book, Maggie Rose. I just know this is going to be another series by Sharlene MacLaren that I will hate to see end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, Sassy and wonderful!
Oh my heavenly stars, I absolutely fell in love with Sharlene MacLaren's writing! She is another new-to-me author and also one that is on my favorite author list!! I was so excited to have the chance to review "Hannah Grace", the first book in The Daughters of Jacob Kane series. This book did not disappoint me in anywany!

In this good, clean, sweet and sassy historical, Sharlen MacLaren introduces us to Hannah Grace, the eldest of Jacob Kane's sassy bunch. I was captured from page one, in which the story completely wrapped around my heart and pulled me into this heart-warming, God-filled story. When I met Hannah, my mother instincts kicked in and wanted to guide her in every way. But, boy when I met her beau, Ralston, I was inclined to want to pop him upside his head and tell him "wake up and don't be dimwitted!". And there was the matter of sweet Jesse Gant and the Sheriff Devlin who was looking after him. Both just stole my heart away!

I really enjoyed this fast paced read. I found myself often wishing the story wouldn't end. I laughed so much through this story. It's filled to over flowing with humor, love, family and friends coming together in times of crisis, over coming the problem by trusting in God and fully relying on His will.

This book is one worthy of 5 star praises and so much more. Please don't hesitate to take a chance with this book. It's truly an excellent story and I'm anxious to see what's happening to "Maggie Rose", Jacob Kane's middle daughter and book 2 in the series!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Start to a New Series!
I've enjoyed all of Sharlene Maclaren's books and am now anxious to read the rest of this series!Hannah Grace kept my interest and made me want to keep reading to the end.I enjoyed all the characters in this book with the exception of the villains.I thought it was a bit far fetched for them to chase a little boy who was a witness to their crime when they could have just left the area but it really didn't impact my enjoyment of the story. You will finish this book wanting to belong to the Kane family or at least move to Sandy Shores and become their close friends :0)

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Reading
In this almost predictable historical Christian story, Hannah Grace had the grace, dignity and spunk of a lady in the early 1900's.Her fire red hair was a giveaway to her personality and the young sheriff in town found that enchanting. There were some good twists to the story which kept readers involved although we all know the typical ending of a historial romance, I have given the book 5 stars because it was a clean and good Christian values for all readers to enjoy.Recommended for church libriaries. ... This isthe final installment in The Kane Legacy. From the moment I began this series, I was hooked.I have eagerly awaited each new installment. It is sad that this is the last of the series.Perhaps they have a new one in mind.

The Kane Legacy has followed the Kane family from the docks in New York to the Texas frontier.Alamo Kane and his brothers came home for a rest, hoping for peace.Santa Ana is not ready to admit defeat and plans to attack American soldiers.

Al and Joanne Lacy are extremely talented authors. They have successful brought history to life in a fictional form. They incorporated faith, hope, and love into their story without being preachy.Fans of Christian fiction will enjoy High Is The Eagle.

Product Description
In this study, based on both historical evidence and ethnographic data, Paula Arai shows that nuns were central agents in the foundation of Buddhism in Japan in the sixth century. They were active participants in the Soto Zen sect, and have continued to contribute to the advancement of the sect to the present day. Drawing on her fieldwork among the Soto nuns, Arai demonstrates that the lives of many of these women embody classical Buddhsit ideals. They have chosen to lead a strictly disciplined monastic life over against successful careers and the unconstrained contemporary secular lifestyle. In this, and other respects, they can be shown to stand in stark contrast to their male counterparts. ... Read more

Product Description
Many books on writing tell you how to think more creatively, how to conjure up an idea from scratch. Many, once you have an idea, show you how to express it clearly and elegantly. And many handbooks offer reliable advice on the use of commas, semicolons, and so forth. But The New Oxford Guide to Writing does all three, so that no matter where you find yourself in the writing process--from the daunting look of a blank page, to the rough draft that needs shaping, to the small but important questions of punctuation--you will find what you need in one handy volume.

Highlighted by numerous examples of successful prose--including marvelous, brief excerpts from Mark Twain, Joan Didion, H.L. Mencken, E.B. White, and Annie Dillard--this stimulating volume covers the entire subject step-by-step, clearly and authoritatively. It shows:

* How to use commonplace books and journals to store

ideas, how to brainstorm, how to explore a potential

topic systematically

* How to use a statement of purpose or an outline to

give preliminary shape to your material, how to use

drafts and revisions (and more revisions) to refine

your ideas

* How to open an essay clearly and interestingly, how

to lead the reader subtly, how to use qualifications

to express complexity without sacrificing impact

* How to organize ideas into a coherent paragraph, how

to vary sentence structure and length for variety and

emphasis

* How to select words that convey both information and

point of view

* And much, much more

In addition, it contains a useful appendix on punctuation, ranging from commas and periods to underlining and capitalization.

Whether you write for business or for pleasure, whether you are a beginner or an experienced pro, The New Oxford Guide to Writing is an essential addition to your reference library, providing abundant assistance and encouragement to write with more clarity, more color, and more force.Amazon.com Review
There is an apparently endless supply of books aboutwriting. Very few of those books, surprisingly, offer a thorough andscholarly approach to the basics: words, sentences, andparagraphs. The New Oxford Guide to Writing does. According toauthor Thomas S. Kane, writing is "an exercise of mind requiring themastery of techniques anyone can learn." Kane's not claiming he cancreate a genius, but, as he says in his introduction, "you don't haveto be a genius to write clear, effective English." The writing thatKane refers to here is expository and persuasive in nature--writingmost likely to be required in day-to-day life. In great detail Kaneexplores the building of an essay, the development of paragraphs, thestyling of sentences, the use of diction, and, finally, issues ofpunctuation. It is unlikely that very many writers have scrutinizedthe building blocks of language the way Kane has, but it's never toolate. Rare is the sourcebook that can offer so much both to beginnersand experts alike. And anyone who loves words will thrill toencounter--if he or she hasn't done so already--the freight-trainsentence, parataxis, the triadic sentence, polysyndeton, asyndeton, collocation, and zeugma. --Jane Steinberg ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I am terribly upset I didn't learn of it sooner.
It's great. Add it to a couple of books on basic grammar and usage and you're ducky.

5-0 out of 5 stars Know all the techniques and why they work. Write with class.
This is the best book on writing I've read so far. It would be more precise to say this is a book on how to dress your thoughts in words most effectively.

I still remember an illustrative example somewhere in the initial pages. What is not so good about the sentence "She dresses in a beaatuful manner" ?. Well, it becomes more effective when written as "She dresses beautifully". In the long phrase "in a beautiful manner", the focus is dissipated over many words. Whereas, "beautifully" compresses meaning in one word and what's more, it sits at the end of the sentence, tending to stay in the reader's mind longer.

The book is full of such fine points and subtle techniques. Kane has taken a wonderfully orderly approach to teaching the writing process right from the basic element - the sentence, to the whole picture - the essay. Gradually building layer on layer, you see how the parts make the whole and how different aspects of writing contribute to the reader's final experience.

There are many meaningful exercises that will make you understand the huge number of tehcniques. Another important feature of the book is its examples of different types and styles of writing taken from a wide range of well known authors -Bertrand Russell, Samuel Johnson, E B White, Virginia Woolf, G K Chesterton, H G Wells, Mark Twain and so on. Kane takes each excerpt from these authors and explains why they work.

With a little effort, you can start writing almost as well as them, at least you'll know how those great authors thought before penning their ideas.

The book is set in very eye-pleasing font and wellpresented. Get the hardback if you can. If you're really interested in writing, this is a book you'll want to treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars The essential book for writing instructors
The New Oxford Guide to Writing is vastly superior to the grammar manuals and reference books that writing instructors usually assign their students. Kane doesn't merely prescribe rules for students to memorize; he imparts genuine understanding of the mechanics and conventions of good prose and takes you through the entire writing process, from facing a blank page to polishing a finished piece. By demystifying this process, Kane's guide empowers students to find their own voices and to keep improving their skills for years to come.

Everyone, from beginner to professional, should have a copy of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and useful
The entertaining aspect is the quotations illustrating various techniques of style. The useful aspect is the identification of many features of style unnoticed by me.

It may indicate the age of the author that on p. 32 herecommends "If you type .... Keep the keys clean and invest now andthen in a new ribbon." He has no special advice for users of a wordprocessor, and I'd guess he never used one. He refers to Webster's SeventhNew Collegiate Dictionary, which gives an idea of how new "new"is.

I'd put this book at a high-school to first-year college level. Theauthor's style is that of a friendly and knowledgable advisor, pedantic attimes, but usually not.

I found the examples really made the points, andthe overall view of techniques shows what can be done. ... Read more
