5-0 out of 5 stars It's simply delightful!
Michael Foreman's whispy watercolours are the perfect accent to these lovely little stories written by Terry Jones (Former member of Monty Python) They are also perfect for reading aloud to a child, and there is even a nice little moral for each tale. The Fishy story teaches you not to be full of yourself, and the Beastie story teaches children not to eat too much sugar (among other things) You may be surprised to find that Terry Jones is in fact an excellent writer of Childrend's stories, and Of course Foreman's illustrations are always beautiful. I would recommend this book to anyone who has young children, or someone that simply loves Fairy Tales or whimsical art. (Like myself) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A cracking good yarn, but watch for language & violence
I just finished reading this book to my 7-year-old son and we both loved it.I'm a fan of Terry Jones from his Monty Pythondays, and was delighted to find his irreverent, offbeat humor intact throughout this fast-paced adventure.Having said that, I must caution parents on the appropriateness of some of this material for the pre-10 age group. If you read it to your child, be prepared to occasionally edit for language and subject matter. Also, as the action occurs in locales throughout France, you may wish to brush up on your French pronunciations!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, Suspenseful, Exciting - YOU'VE GOT TO READ THIS!!
Okay, first of all, this book is superb. It has wonderful descriptions, the characters are unique, and it has an eventful plot.Could it get any better? You bet.It is funny, and a good book to get kids interested in reading.I would reccomend it those who love medieval stories, adventure stories, humourous stories, fantasy,...Pretty much anyone!Probably best for ages 7 - 14.
I read this book before I read the prequel, and it wasn't so confusing.I've been looking for the first one, The Knight and the Squire, but so far I haven't found it in any bookstores. (sigh!) Now here's what it's about:
Setting: medieval France
Characters: Tom - an adventurous young squire
Ann - a mischievious young girl who masquerades as a knight for most of the book
and Emily - a young Lady who Tom runs into and immediately falls in love with during his adventures
Plot: Tom is kidnapped, thrown in a dungeon with a cannibal, condemned to death, he escapes, runs into Emily (who decides to come with him), and as he is escaping he discovers that the whole English army is drunk.Oh, and later he falls into a well, jumps off a palace wall to avoid being captured by the Pope's guards, and Emily, who thinks Ann is a knight, falls in love with 'him' until she learns the truth (that Ann is a girl).
Now the plot isn't the only thing that will make you laugh until you cry - for here are some examples of chapter titles:
"The Town Where Everyone is Drunk" and "How Tom Nearly Invented the Flushing Lavatory Five Hundred Years Before Thomas Crapper" and "What Happened Under the Pope's Floorboards"
Okay, so if you don't think that's funny, you probably shouldn't read it.
But, anyway, it's a funny, suspenseful, exciting book.I congratulate Terry Jones and say to anyone thinking about buying it "If you don't read it, you're really missing something!"

5-0 out of 5 stars READ IT!!
Read the Knight and the Squirefirst, then read this installment. They are wonderful -- exciting storytelling, humor and excellent medieval research behind them. Terry Jones is a gifted story teller. We found the Knight and His Squire on a trip to London several years ago and loved it so much that we ordered this book as soon as it came out in England thry Amazon UK. It was well worth the extra shipping expense. We cannot wait for the next book in the series. By the way, the novels have excellent male AND female leading characters, and are witty enough to interest adults as well. Go for it! ... Read more

Product Description
Painter, printmaker and teacher Sir Terry Frost RA (1915-2003) was a key figure in the development of British twentieth-century abstract art. He was also a prolific printmaker, and this important publication brings together, for the first time, a complete catalogue of the artist's prints. The result is a colourful visual history of Frost's remarkable printmaking career. Discovering a natural ability to capture likenesses, Frost began to explore his artistic talents as a prisoner of war. During the late 1940s, he honed and developed his artistic skills as a student at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. Dividing his time between the thriving art scenes of London and St Ives during the 1950s, Frost embraced abstraction and soon established himself as a leading British artist - a reputation which is still felt today. Prints were an essential element of Frost's oeuvre - he believed that painting and printmaking were inseparable and that each medium informed the other. The importance of printmaking within his evolution as an abstract artist is borne out by the sumptuous colour images reproduced here.Combining sound scholarship with arresting imagery, "Terry Frost Prints" offers both reference value and visual delight and as such is an essential purchase for all those interested in this key British artist. ... Product Description

This perennial bestseller never loses its charm. It really happened-a hoax perpetrated by two girls who claimed to have photographed actual "fairies"; among the people caught up in the popular hysteria were Arthur Conan Doyle (who fell for it) and Harry Houdini (who did not). This remarkable parody, written by a former member of the Monty Python troupe, takes a riotously witty, visually extraordinary, and wildly original look at what went on. In every respect, this "handwritten diary" captures the look of the age-though the fairies, it is true, do sometimes have a more malevolent aspect than one might expect...
A fresh-and funny-take on the true story that inspired two movies.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This For Your Children
Don't you DARE buy this book for your children unless they are interested in child pornography. I bought this for my daughter for Christmas since she has a fairy obsession. I received the book and looked through it to make sure it was in good shape. I ripped the bad pages out and wrapped it. There were still TONS of bad pages though. It talks about the author getting kissed on the lips by their uncle and sex! I decided to unwrap it and blot out the bad parts but there was almost nothing left except a few pages so I threw it away. What a waste of my time and money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious dark humor
I'm a bit perplexed by those who thought this was too ghoulish--what part of PRESSED Fairy Book did you not understand?Like PRESSED flowers, only with fairies. Why would anyone come here for a "pretty story about fairies"??

Some of us like our dark humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent magic!
This is a wondrous book, filled with smiles and laughter. I received it as a gift several years ago and have enjoyed it ever since.I purchased a copy from Amazon.com to send as a gift to a friend in the U.K.She adores it.Most entertaining reading and the illustrations are the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Flights of Fancy with Lady Cottington's Fairies

Very creative, completed in watercolours, this book is wonderful to view and certainly worth owning. The art is fantastic, a must of lovers of art and lovers of fairies, not to mention those prone to flights of fancy.
The book is wonderfully presented, with a large soft padded cover it is both beautiful inside and out. Makes a great gift too! ... Read more

Essays in this volume explore the last three and one half millennia of the long history of the California Coast, focusing on the archaeological signatures of emergent cultural complexity.Organized geographically, they provide a mosaic of archaeological, historic, and ethnographic findings that illuminate cultural changes over time. To explain these Late Holocene cultural developments, the authors address issues ranging from culture history, paleoenvironments, settlement, subsistence, exchange, ritual, power, to division of labor, and employ both ecological and post-modern perspectives. Complex cultural expressions, most highly developed in the Santa Barbara Channel and the North Coast, are viewed alternatively as fairly recent and abrupt responses to environmental flux or the end-product of gradual progressions that began earlier in the Holocene. ... Product Description
This book moves the controversy over multiculturalism in higher education from primarily an ideological debate to practical and concrete considerations. The first part outlines the demographic and historic realities that will make some form of multicultural education necessary in the coming century. The second part provides examples of how selective aspects of North American co-cultures (e.g., Native American and Puerto Rican) could be central to reforming curriculum and instruction. The final part provides practical and concrete suggestions and proposals for how to improve teaching, administration, and student outcomes in higher education by making them domestically and internationally multicultural. It becomes apparent that the need for greater multiculturalism is part of a long history of higher education in the United States as it has responded to cultural and social change, and that there is no inherent reason why the university community cannot include in its core organization and mission the wisdom of multiple cultures--European, African, Native American, and Asian. ... Product Description

Once upon a time, the universe was much simpler: before our modern understanding of an infinite formless space scattered with pulsating stars, revolving planets, and mysterious black holes, the universe was seen as a rigid hierarchical system with the earth and the human race at its center. Medieval Views of the Cosmos investigates this worldview shared by medieval societies, revealing how their modes of thought affect us even today.

In the medieval world system—inherited by Christians and Muslims from the Greeks and Romans, and modified by their own religious tenets—spheres bearing the planets and stars wheeled around the earth, and at every level there was a moral lesson for humanity and a satisfying metaphor for the nature of God. The authors of this volume explain how the medieval view of the universe was harmonious on theological and practical levels, providing answers to the most puzzling of questions.

Medieval Views of the Cosmos is an engaging and beautifully illustrated introduction to a world where every moment was a theater of human drama directed by the hand of God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mikaela's Book
My granddaughter has read this and enjoyed it, It was in excellant condition when we received it

4-0 out of 5 stars Best read aloud by adult to keep the pace...
Our Grandchildren enjoy the exploits of two rather non-typical children, as long as I read it to them... even got them away from their electronic games!Good to excellent readers over age 10 might be able to keep the pace, but others would get lost in the words and asides. Now that we have had Harry Potter, the British idioms are not as foreign as when our now 26-yr-old tried to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Imaginative, fantastic, and extremely funny adventure
This book is one of my favorite books I have ever read.It is one of those gems you find that no one else seems to know about. The illustrations are fun, the story is comical, not in a silly, stupid way that some "funny" stories can be, but in a way that will actually make you laugh out loud. And the story is actually a very nice story, ending without giving you the sense that other books can of, "Well, it had some nice parts, but what was the point?"I enjoyed it as a child, and I still enjoy it as an adult (well, semi-adult).I only hope that my copy will survive for my own children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK!
I chose this book because it is by my fourth favorite comedien, Terry Jones. It is about a boy named Nicobobinus and his friend Rosie, who go to find the land of the Dragons, because Nicobobinus can do anything. Myfavorite character is the Golden man, because it is funny that a goldstatue walks, talks, and has servents.

Product Description
Over thirty years ago, a group of six Englishmen - well, one was Welsh and another an interloping American - rewrote the rules of comedy.Monty Python's Flying Circus, an unheralded, previously unseen half-hour show of sketches, hilarities, inanities and animations, first appeared on the BBC late one night in 1969. Its impact has been felt the world over ever since. From its humble beginnings, it blossomed into the most influential movement in modern comedy. THE PYTHONS' AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE PYTHONS is a unique look at arguably the most important comic team of the modern age, with 64 pages of photographs, many culled from the team's own personal collections, and many more seen for the first time. This is the definitive word on all things Pythonesque. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars And now for something completely not funny, yet indispensible.
...but that's not a bad thing (explanation below).

I got this book for Christmas and was concerned that because of it's size I would probably end up just thumbing through and reading select parts. Not the case.I started reading it and couldn't stop.

It covers the group and individuals from their pre-Python lives through discussions of working together again after The Live at Aspen event - though I won't tell you what conclusion they came to.In between is chock full of every detail about their influences, TV show, the movies, the stage shows and more. And because each member contributes (hence...autobiography) you get a great insider's perspective on the dynamics of the group. You learn first hand who doesn't like who, what they enjoyed and how, at times, they really struggled, and a bunch more behind the scenes insights into their personalities.

I found the book to be fascinating. It is formatted such that each event is discussed by multiple members of the troop. So you get a 360 degree view of their writing sessions, their fights, their good times, their movie productions, their business and artistic relationships.

The only downside (and here is why I titled this as such) is that it was rarely funny. That is by no means a fault, but could come as a surprise (as it did me) to the reader who expects it to be silly and funny like their performances. As a result this book is probably only going to be of interest to a true Python fan.And a true Python fan will find it indispensible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
The Pythons were like the British Marx Brothers, Anti-authority,
subversive, surreal, and very very funny.Particularly interesting are the Python's accounts of their childhood and pre-fame days.

It seems "A Careful Reader" wasn't so careful after all.The picture of Dudley Moore (and it is most assuredly him) is on page 68 NOT 88.Here's a clue for ACR...he's about 30 years younger than he was when he appeared in the movie "10."Thank you and good night!

3-0 out of 5 stars A few points about this Monty Python book
On page 88 it says that one of the four men in the photo is Dudley Moore. The fellow in the picture doesn't look at all like Dudley Moore. Furthermore, it says, on another page, that Ian MacNaughton is beseeching Terry Jones. But the man MacNaughton is begging seems to actually be Michael Palin. On a different note, in his autobiography part of the book Eric Idle seems too proud of his anti-authority stances. The 60's are very long gone now. Idle should grow up and not be so flaunting of his anti-societial ways. Being part of society is back in fashion. ... Read more
