Product Description
Lorraine Hansberry wrote of Black consciousness before it was fashionable, but she bequeathed to all of us a legacy astounding in its richness and relevancy. Few writers, black or white, are more relevant to present-day America than Lorraine Hansberry.

Here, for the first time, Caedmon has gathered many of her plays, interviews, and speeches into one unforgettable collection.

A Raisin in the Sun: an emotionally lacerating landmark of modem American theatre. A full-cast production starring Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis.

To Be Young, Gifted and Black: a glowing, vibrant, searing and, at the same time, redemptively joyous self-portrait. A full-cast production starring James Earl Jones.

Lorraine Hansberry Speaks Out: seven interviews and speeches, recorded between 1959 and 1964, that range in topic from integration to backlash to the greatness and limitations of AfricanAmerican leadership. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ELECTRIC READINGS
James Earl Jones, Ossie Davis, and Ruby Dee.Three of today's most prominent actors bring vital poignancy to the unforgettable words of Lorraine Hansberry.

"A Raisin In The Sun," the first drama penned by a black woman to reach Broadway, electrified audiences when it opened in 1959.Loosely basingher play on an Illinois antisegregation case which her father won, Ms. Hansberry sets her story in south Chicago. In it, Walter Lee, a black chauffeur, dreams of improving his life.He hopes to use his father's money to open a liquor store.

However, his mother is against the liquor business, and uses the money to buy a family home.Conflicts arise when someone from this all-white neighborhood attempts to buy them out.

"To Be Young Gifted and Black," a compilation of Ms. Hansberry's writings appeared not only in book form but in 1969 was produced off-Broadway.

Also included on this keepsake audio are seven of Ms. Hansberry's speeches and interviews recorded between 1959 and 1964.It is thrilling to hear her voice.

Regrettably this gifted playwright and author died of cancer at the young age of 34.Her pen was stilled but her words are as relevant and moving today as when they were written. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars king james audio cd
If you are usually on the run, this is the best thing to purchase. Very clear pronounciation and the speed of the reading is perfect; not too fast or slow.

1-0 out of 5 stars Blank CDS
The Complete Holy Bible on CDs is totally defective, not only for me, but, as I have read in reviews, for other customers as well. There is absolutely nothing but clicking noises on any of the CDS.I called Amazon's customer service, only to be sent to the Philippines to a woman named Thea. She stated my visa was not the right card and that it was a master card number. I told her that I did not have a master card and that I had used my visa. I became suspicious after several minutes of bantering back and forth. I asked to speak with a supervisor. She refused stating that the call volume was too large. This call lasted forty two minutes. During this time there were voices in the background whispering and she muted the phone several times during the conversation. I could hear a man's voice in the background whispering. I had planned to reorder, but after all this I told her to cancel everything. She stated she had already ordered another set. I asked her how she had ordered another set since she had stated that the Visa card was not the right card. I told her to cancel it as I thought something was not right.

I wrote Amazon Corporate Office complaining about this treatment. I never heard back. I will not do business again with Amazon. Thea was fishing for another credit card number?
I feel sad about this, but I do not feel safe using Amazon anymore.

3-0 out of 5 stars Of all 60 discs, Bible is not complete here.
I've enjoyed the 60 CDroms regardless of some of this audio set's shortcomings. This purchase is helpful and affordable. Each CD is a single-sided recording, and not the double-sided recorded CDs that are often ones which wear out quickly. Each CD feels of above-average quality with respects to its material thickness. Though, the cloth-like plastic carrycase is cheapy, it is adequate for the task of holding this 60-Cdrom set. The CD-discs slip out easily, though the discs due tend to stick when going back in. (Tip: If you use an index card like a shoe-horn, the CDs slide in smoothly.)
This audio bible purchase is for its audio tracks only. None of the CD discs contain a full bible, Adobe PDF-file to utilize as a word-by-word read-along. This audio set lacks any printed index to help you find the exact disc number for where you can find a specific book, chapter and verse. The audio bible set's advertising cover fails to directly tell you just which version of Christian bible this audio set reflects. For the most part, you can loosely follow along with a revised, New King James version and you should. Why?

This set claims to be the original and complete King James Version and is not! Two reasons. One, it lacks the canonical books (also called the Apocrypha or Septuagint books.) Ten missing books, for example: Tobit (Jesus referenced to this when He mentioned Sarah and her seven husbands), the Books of Maccabees, Baruch, Sirach, Wisdom, and Judith. This audio bible set is likely a revised "New King James" version. It includes the use of terms like "Lo" and "Spake" and "Thereof" in its biblical text. I have a Nelson New King James from the 1980s, Oxford Cambridge from the 1990s--and this set doesn't reflect either closely. Perhaps a better Amazon-Sherlock will narrow down the NKJV book that has been used. Second, even if this audio set is a revised New King James version, this Holy Bible set comes up short. It is incomplete, mostly due to sound editing errors that I will refer to, later.

Two great voices deliver their best on most of the bible stories: Jon (And it is Jon and not Jan) Sherberg and James Earl Jones. Every storyteller has his own technique. In the Old Testament, Jon Sherberg flies through the difficult, mind-strangling, and confusing foreign nouns (Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, or whatever) that often reduce the reading comprehension of us, mere mortals. If you are like me, you tend to skip over those words. Since I can't pronounce them, I tend to treat them, all, like one generic blank-space. I read absorbing what I can, then move on. With this audio set, I was astounded as to how much I was missing. Mr. Jon Sherberg delivers those foreign-tongue terms with incredible ease and verve. Because of his and Mr. Jones' audio tracks, I have retained the specific sounds of their pronounced speak; and later used those foreign-sounding terms to make associations throughout other bible stories. A new experience for me. Bible stories need to be heard, told out loud. James Earl Jones delivers the New Testament far differently than Jon Sherberg attacks the Old Testament. Mr. Jones talks like a kindly parent reading bedtime stories to impressionable children. When he says, "LUKE," for a moment I hear the same voice that he gave in the audio recordings for Darth Vader in Star Wars. The clear recordings by both audio performers make for great stuff. Jon Sherberg, dealing with the Old Testament's harshness and violence, brings in flaring flavor in the active adventure passages. For the genealogy verses, he gives dictatorial clarity and swiftness (Son of this, tribe of that. A trove of foreign-tongue words flying easily off his tongue. The chronologies of the bible, a part thereof.) Overall, this audio bible set delivers new clarity and understand for my family and I. In that, I thank God for this set's good aspects. For you, I'm adding what information you may need to make your best choice. This set was advertised to be something far better than what arrived at my family's doorstep.

Sound errors. Of the over 1200 audio tracks, about 12 tracks carry sound-editing errors. OT Ezekiel 17 and two of the tracks from NT Peter carry middle-area erasures with confused garbling sounds. Maybe it is some kind of audio decompression error. Most of the other CD-audio errors are erased verse-endings; as in, someone wanted to reduce the size of that audio-track's fading-out silence, and that person mistakenly shaved off a few words or half the bible verse in the process. The audio set's advertising cover says Made in China. Perhaps someone's lack of English and Christian knowledge contributed to these careless sound-editing errors. He, she, or they did not take due editing diligence in dealing with the Holy Bible, here. Regardless of that, Mr. Jon Sherberg and Mr. James Earl Jones presented their best. God bless them. God bless you. In the error tracks, you can hear the abrupt audio interruptions, and know that those tracks have been mishandled. Each audio track in this collection is audibly labeled by the speaker (1 Corinthians, Chapter 13...and so forth) in the beginning of each track. If you are thinking of converting these tracks into MP3 files, Windows Media has only some of the disc tracks accurately labeled. You will be doing a lot of labeling by hand, even if you use NCH's Switch program.

To get the complete, revised New King James bible experience, this audio set is not enough. You will need to amend those faulty sound-verses with quiet readings from the erred corresponding passages. Twelve tracks out of twelve-thousand equals one-percent---not a bad error margin for long, audio series. However, this is a set containing stories from the Holy Bible. This audio bible set is not complete! Some reviewers are giving these as gifts to folks with visual impairments. That has me concerned. It's part of my Christian beliefs and understandings that absorbing/reading the complete holy bible brings special graces and blessings from God, to you. Go the distance! Be sure to enjoy the full and complete bible.

This audio bible helps with your endeavor to study, but does not measure up to its advertising as a complete King James version. Other audio versions that are advertised as complete (with the ten missing books), and are twice the price or more. If you're looking for an abridged bible aid, this might work for you. If you're looking for a complete audio Holy Bible, this will fall short. I personally can't recommend one of the other audio sets that fits the bill of being "more" complete. In all likelihood, I would expect errors in them, too. The Devil is the hardest working agent on the globe and fully intends to be goodness a constant chore. I am saving to get one of the larger Holy Bible audio sets with the ten missing books. In the Book of Judith, she lobs off the head of an enemy. Such women of moxy carry quite an appeal to me. The New King James dumped the Book of Wisdom and kept the sexually-charged passages of the Song of Songs/Song of Solomon? God forgive us for our constant idiocy. *L* May God's peace be upon you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Clarity
I purchased this for my husband and he loved the old testament. However the new testament reader it's very hard to hear and understand what he is saying.

5-0 out of 5 stars THREE HOURS A DAY WITH AUDIO BIBLE
I can't say more about the audio CDs of the King James Version Bible with James Earl Jones.

The cover was sturdy and well-organized.The CDs are easy to pull out of their jackets as I am driving.

The quality of Jones' recording is perfect. The price for this was even more perfect!

I commute 3 hours a day and the Bible is my companion, thanks to Amazon.

Product Description
How did it feel to walk out in front of hundreds of thousands of people and open the Woodstock festival? What kind of life journey led from Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, to that celebrated concert stage? And how can a man preserve the legacy of Woodstock and his own deeply held beliefs in an age of computers and instant communication? In this warm, highly personal narrative, Richie Havens answers those questions and more.

Richie Havens was one of the artists who helped bring lush poetry and a social conscience to popular music in the sixties. From his unique vantage point, we watch the emerging careers of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Jimi Hendrix, and Lou Gossett Jr. (who cowrote one of Richie's most famous songs) and revisit underappreciated singer-songwriters, among them Fred Nell, Judy Henske, Tim Hardin, Dino Valenti, and Bruce Murdoch. From his unusual guitar style to the process of writing and interpreting songs, Richie relates both the triumphs and frustrations of the music business and invites you into the recording studio and on memorable backstage visits with the likes of Elvis Presley and the Beatles.

But music is only one side of Richie Havens. He also describes his nonprofit organization for marine study and conservation, the song that sent him on a Middle East peace mission, his work mobilizing schoolchildren as environmental activists, and the true legacy of the Woodstock generation. Here is a candid, compelling, exhilarating visit with a remarkable artist whose joy in living and faith in the human spirit are contagious.Amazon.com Review
It's clear from reading this memoir by folksinger and social activist Richie Havens that this is one '60s survivor who hasn't become jaded. They Can't Hide Us Anymore (the title comes from a remark Havens made when he opened the Woodstock festival) traces Havens's journey from Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant district (where his musical skills aided him in staving off unwanted gang attention) to Greenwich Village at the cusp of the early-'60s folk boom. There, the positive-thinking artist/gadfly/aspiring entertainer crossed paths with everyone from Bob Dylan to Wilt Chamberlain. Then it was on to Woodstock and international (if fairly fleeting) fame. As befits an unapologetic counterculture adherent, Havens's memoir/life guide doesn't adhere to a tight structure. One minute he's offering a hasty guitar lesson, the next he's making passing reference to an encounter with the ghost of Aaron Burr at New York's Cafe Bizarre. He devotes as many words to unknown pals who've made a positive impression on him as he does to encounters with the Beatles and Elvis Presley. Some may find the fanciful flow of Havens's narrative disconcerting, but it's clearly the way the man has lived his life. It makes sense that he'd chronicle his experiences that way, too. --Steven Stolder ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars the 60s are dead and this book proves it
Leafing through and then reading this book at length, I had to laugh. One particularly amusing and typical account was of RH's finding symbolic significance in an ancient Israeli fort's similarity to Close Encounters of the Third Kind's movie set.Man I get high just thinking about it.I just want to unread history, numb my powers of critical thinking, and go live in a patchouli-scented yurt when this otherwise amazing, astounding musician dumbs us down this way.Ah, to be like a child again:self-centered, uneducated (as the other reviewer put it) and able to lovingly turn the pages of this book without ever aging and having to learn from experience. The sad fact is that by extolling the virtues of childlikeness in this book, Mr. Havens censors the brain itself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heavenly Havens
Thirty years after he appeared as the opening act at Woodstock, folksinger Richie Havens now takes the stage as an author. He insists this book isn't a memoir but an account of the "humorous, talented and incompetent people who occupy the entertainment industry."

Havens's tales of the people he met in New York City during the 1960s -- Bob Dylan, James Earl Jones (who also contributes a generous foreword), Joan Baez, Lou Gossett Jr. and others -- are full of nostalgic appeal. Such grace notes from Havens the historian, however, get overwhelmed by his penchant for pontificating -- on the environment, drug use, child-rearing, world peace, you name it. He grows wearisome fast. Warning: Havens takes astrology very seriously. He dismisses his absentmindedness as "an Aquarian trait" and describes a former business manager as a "very nervous type. He also was a Capricorn." As for John Lennon, the ex-Beatle "had a strong premonition that something was going to happen to him," reports Havens. "I know I did."

All of which raises one more question: Does Havens, a talented, likable musical performer, have any premonitions about his future in publishing? All in all an interesting glimpse into a life of contradictions and fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars Self-centered and Uneducated
I am a 17-year old senior who had to pick an autobiography to read for my AP English class.I'd heard Mr. Havens' music before and thought that this would be an interesting read. Not having grown up in the Woodstockgeneration, maybe I cannot fully appreciate all that Richie Havens tried toportray, but I feel I am a relatively open-minded person.

I felt that he(Havens) came across as incredibly self-centered and self-promoting.Maybeit's just me, but I feel that an autobiography should be less about one'saccomplishments, which anyone can find out with a little research, but moreabout what makes someone the way they are.Havens talked a lot about allthe wonderful things that he has done, which is fine, but it was all donein a self rightious tone.

Whenever he would begin to touch on hisinfluencees or idols, it came across in a name-dropper sort of way.Youknow the type of people-- the ones that have to brag about who all theyknow.I think his meetings with the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, etc.were supposed to come across as humble and interesting, but I didn't getthat impression at all.

I think that this could have been an incrediblyinteresting book.He is an amazing performer and has plenty of experiencesand knowledge to share, but it could have been done in a more accessibleand less narrative sort of way. But, what do I know?I'm just one ofthose rebellious members of Generation X.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Man Well Beyond His Music
If you have ever seen Richie perform, then you will feel that you are a part of this book. It draws you in like you are sitting next to him and he is telling you stories of the likes of Dylan and Hendrix. This book is anextension of Havens and shows you a side of him beyond his melodic guitarand ballads. I have spent many hours both listening to his performances andtalking with him in his dressing rooms and at many Woodstock anniversaries.I thought I knew him well until I purchased his book. It showed me the realHavens, and what a great man he truly is. I urge you to sit down and readit from cover to cover and then read it again !

5-0 out of 5 stars A soothing book written from the heart
This book reveals the inner thoughts of Richie Haven's genius. The stories behind his story, with credits to those individuals who helped shape the true music of the 60's and 70's, are wonderful. One finds that the kindnessexpressed in Richie Haven's music and wishes for a better world, are thosewhich really exist in his mind and spirit. This is a great book for anyonewho grew-up in the 60's, as well as for others who love contemporary folkmusic and/or Richie Havens...S. Winters ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Kindle flop
The only reason I gave two stars is the hope that this book may be of some use in paper format. On the Kindle it is useless for it's stated purpose of providing poems to read out loud. Many of the poems are in extremely small print. One cannot increase the font size. There is some sort of goofy system to "zoom" the font.Sometimes it turns the print 90 degrees and enlarges it, sometimes it doesn't.Even when it is of some help it only works for one stanza.Press "next page" and you're right back where you started with no "zoom".There are helpful comments about each poem, unfortunately they may be inserted in exactly the wrong place. In "Casey at the Bat" after Casey swings his first strike come two pages of commentary.Try maintaining a rhythm reading aloud with that!

I have public domain volunteer created Kindle poetry that is far easier to read aloud than this.It may work in print but skip it for the Kindle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attractive Layout and Unique Background Info for Broad Mix of Poetry
Anyone who likes to recite poetry out loud or get others to recite it will find this collection of 100 poems a special treat. It is attractively laid out in a square page shape--the height of a regular paperback, but a little wider. On every page there are interesting notes about the poem in the margin--everythng from how it ties in with oral storytelling and poetic traditions to the use of rhythm, rhyme meter, and language,The user friendly notes zero in especially on aspects of the poem that are important for oral delivery without bogging down the reader. The poem lines are double-spaced for easy reading. The selection of poems ranges from childhood rhymes to literary classics by such poets as Lewis Caroll, Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Sylvia Plath, Ogden Nash, and Rudyard Kipling. The styles include love poems, limericks, elegies, raps, ballads, and more; from Middle English to free verse, sonnets to satires, nonsense poetry to formalism, there is something to fit every budding poet's tastes.Even if you don't plan to use the poems for oral reading, the margin notes help you to appreciate the poems more fully in their use of language, sound, and literary traditions. To quote James Earl Jones in the introduction to the book, "In this "burst of verses," you will find fun and sorrow, stories and songs, whimsy and majesty."And a chance to explore how to bring them to life out loud. ...
