Ted was THE James Gang historian. We were buddies at Vanderbilt and neighbors at West Hall in the 1970's. I heard lately he died of COPD in Maryland - sad. My dad called Ted, me and our crew 'The Gun Hippies.' We used to go to some of my family properties in TN and let loose with a variety of classic firearms. Being 'fond of the grog' as we used to say, we would shoot up bottles after properly disposing of the contents in an eco-friendly way - lol. Those old Colts, Mausers, Brownings and muzzle loaders were quite fun on those days so long ago.

Who knows - maybe Ted is talking to Frank, Jesse and the boys right now. Ted was a consumate niche historian, author and my friend. Goodbye Ted, may you RIP. Why no voting buttons? Best In Series
I've read a number of the biographies in the 'Signature Lives' series. They're all good, and beautifully designed, but 'Jesse james' is the best of the bunch so far. No insult to the author intended, but as I read I kept thinking 'this should be a movie'.

A Real Page Turner
I bought this for my twelve-year-old nephew, who is fascinated with all things Western, and ended up reading it myself. Thought I knew who Jesse James was, mostly from movies, but the author opened my eyes to the real outlaw. This is a gripping, real life story, expertly told. Kids and adults will appreciate the dozens of photos and illustrations. Made me feel like I was there, and I was surpised at how 'modern' the world was, with tabloid celebrities and phonies 'spinning' their stories for our attention. ... Read more

Solid account of a disastrous raid
John Koblas's account of the 1876 raid upon Northfield, Minnesota, by the notorious James-Younger Gang (in which the town citizens basically shot the famous outlaws to pieces) is detailed and convincing (although not quite equal to Koblas's later "Faithful Unto Death").The mystery presented of a possible "ninth man" in the raid (standard accounts name only eight bandits) is never solved, nor can it probably ever be.In the 1930's an elderly man living in Los Angeles claimed to be Bill Stiles, one of the outlaws supposedly killed at Northfield.This Los Angeles Stiles claimed there had been a case of mistaken identity and that the "Stiles" killed was another man altogether.This 20th Century Stiles' story, related by a pulp fiction author of the time, contains many unlikely elements, but John Koblas does present some supporting evidence which could point to Stiles being genuine.In addition, the participation of possibly one or two other men in the raid is discussed.Ultimately, John Koblas can supply no final answers, but the questions raised are interesting ones. ...
