Product Description
Over the last thirty years, the study of medieval rural settlements has been completely transformed. The origins and expansion of settlements are now as much the focus of interest as their decline. This interpretation evinces a much fuller appreciation of the role played by the lords of the manor and other individuals in the history of settlement. These very considerable changes in interpretation are fully reflected in this wide-ranging collection of essays, written by a distinguished team of archaeologists, historians and historical geographers. Its authors use documents, aerial photography, fieldwork, excavation, and the analysis of botanical remains to reconstruct the medieval landscape. The first part of the book examines the history and geography of settlements; the documentary evidence for early medieval estate and settlement patterns; initiative and authority in settlement change; the growth and decline of medieval rural settlements, and the significance of the Wolds in English settlement history. Part two combines regional fieldwork studies with more detailed case studies. These include studies of deserted settlements in the West of England; deserted medieval settlements in the South-West Midlands; the archaeology of medieval rural settlement in East Anglia; medieval settlement remains and historical conservation, and field systems and township structures. The final section is concerned with excavation, and again combines regional with more detailed case studies. It contains chapters on the excavation of dispersed settlement in medieval Britain; peasant houses, farmsteads and villages in North-East England, and environmental archaeology. The book closes with a consideration of the relationship between archaeological and historical method, and its application to the study of rural settlement. ... Read more

Product Description
This work contains the full text of the Civil Procedure Rules relating to Costs and the supporting Practice Direction, together with annotation and expert comment upon the new regime and its implications. It also sets out or refers to other costs rules in the Civil Procedure Rules, to give the reader guidance on the costs regime in operation. The Costs Rules introduce a regime with new factors such as the conduct of the parties, including failure to negotiate and the concept of proportionality being relevant both to the entitlement to costs and their quantification. It also examines changes to payments into court and without prejudice offers with consequences to costs. Offers may now be made by claimants as well as defendants and judgments may be made before the commencement proceedings. The new provisions are contained in parts 43-48 of the Civil Procedure Rules and in the Costs Practice Direction. The book is a user-friendly and authoritative guide to the subject and addresses the issues in a clear and straightforward way, enabling the reader to quickly understand the changes which have been implemented in how solicitors and barristers are remunerated, in this important period of change. ... Product Description

The series Ireland Observed focuses on Irish history in the period between 1782 when Ireland gained partial legislative independence from Great Britain (with the repeal of the Declaratory Act and the amendment of Poynings’ Law), and the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921. During this period Ireland was in a continual state of flux, politically, economically and socially, and while there have been numerous reductionist and popular historical accounts of Ireland and the nature of the Irish people, to get a true understanding of this volatile history it is necessary to read some of the more neglected and inaccessible texts written by contemporaries in the forms of memoirs, travelogues and ‘objective’ histories. This series concentrates primarily on texts as written by British and foreign outsiders who managed to write and provide major insights or snapshots of Ireland under change. Taken together the sets in this series will provide a basis for a proper and balanced understanding of Ireland and a basis for understanding the nature of history itself.

Following on from Michael Hurst’s first set in the series Ireland Observed: Colony to Dominion, 1782—1921, this collection again focuses on some lesser-known and uncommon texts that are worthy of highlighting with a view to correcting the distortions of popular historians of Ireland in this dramatic period. German, English and Irish commentators of various ranks are represented, and taken together these valuable contemporary texts help broaden understanding of how Ireland came to be as it is today. These texts are carefully selected for the profound insights they give into the social, political and economic conditions of the developing Ireland. The works, never previously reprinted and many of which are now scarce, are reproduced here in their entirety and provided with a biographical and historical introduction by Michael Hurst.

The series Ireland Observed focuses on Irish history in the period between 1782 when Ireland gained partial legislative independence from Great Britain (with the repeal of the Declaratory Act and the amendment of Poynings' Law), and the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921. During this period Ireland was in a continual state of flux, politically, economically and socially, and while there have been numerous reductionist and popular historical accounts of Ireland and the nature of the Irish people, to get a true understanding of this volatile history it is necessary to read some of the more neglected and inaccessible texts written by contemporaries in the forms of memoirs, travelogues and 'objective' histories. This series concentrates primarily on texts as written by British and foreign outsiders who managed to write and provide major insights or snapshots of Ireland under change. Taken together the sets in this series will provide a basis for a proper and balanced understanding of a complex country, useful both for an understanding of Ireland and as a way of understanding the nature of history itself.

This first set, Contemporary Observations of Ireland from Grattan to Griffith, is a selection of texts covering the period from Grattan's Parliament in the 1790s to the end of the nineteenth century. They are all personal accounts by observers who nonetheless have written interesting socio-economic and historical accounts of the country they saw, without succumbing to the worst aspects of sentimental touristic writing and patronising attitudes then often prevalent. The writers, from the British Isles and the European mainland - including a newspaper editor, professional travel writer, an army officer and a reforming liberal noble - document many of the attempts from outside and inside to resolve the island's dilemmas.

These texts are carefully selected for the profound insights they give into the social, political and economic conditions of the developing Ireland. The works, never previously reprinted and many of which are now scarce, are reproduced here in their entirety. In addition there is a reset volume of new translations that make French and Hungarian observations available in English for the first time.

—new collection of previously unreprinted works on Ireland by overseas observers
—many scarce titles
—includes two works published here in English for the first time
—cross-cultural interest for all Irish historians

Product Description
This book analyzes the labor market adjustment processes of immigrants in the United States.Newly-arrived immigrants earn less, work fewer weeks, and have higher rates of unemployment than native-born workers. After a period of assimilation, these conditions later converge to, and often surpass, those of native-born workers. The adjustment process traditionally implies greater employment turnover.
Newly-arrived immigrant men have lower employment and labor force participation rates than similar native-born American men.Yet differences in unemployment rates are less consistent, and are complicated by shorter periods of unemployment duration for immigrants.Contrary to expectations, recent immigrants are less likely to be unemployed, even after adjusting for a lower duration of unemployment. This is partly because movements in and out of the labor force are high.Lower employment for recent immigrants is best explained by lower labor force participation, while higher unemployment rates are best explained by high rates of labor force entry. All labor force outcomes for immigrants, whether higher or lower upon arrival, converge to native-born norms after a few years of residence. ... Excerpt: Jonathan Ionatana Falefasa "Tana" Umaga, ONZM (pronounced , Samoan: ; born 27 May 1973 in Lower Hutt) is a New Zealand rugby union footballer and former captain of the national team, the All Blacks. He played for the Hurricanes starting with the Super 12's inception in 1996 and took over the captaincy in 2003. Graham Henry named him as All Blacks captain in 2004; under his leadership the All Blacks won 19 of their 21 games including the clean sweep of the British and Irish Lions and the Grand Slam in 2005. At the end of 2005, after 74 Test caps (where he scored 36 tries), Umaga retired from international rugby. Umaga played four games in 2007 for the Wellington Lions in the Air New Zealand Cup, in order to play 100 matches for the province, before taking up the position of coach at Toulon. His coaching future was uncertain in the 200809 season, as Toulon was a poor performer in the first half of the season and facing a relegation scare, and there was speculation that he would be replaced by Philippe Saint-André. Umaga returned to a playing role for Toulon in the second half of that season, and at the same time announced that he would not continue as head coach beyond that...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=742611 ... Excerpt: Michael Eric Hurst, ONZM (born 20 September 1957) is a New Zealand actor, director and writer, mostly on stage and television. He is probably best known internationally for playing Iolaus in the television programs Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and companion series Xena: Warrior Princess. Hurst was born in Lancashire, England, the eldest of four brothers. When he was seven his family moved to Christchurch, New Zealand. He enrolled at Papanui High School, then University of Canterbury, but for only one year. He married New Zealand actress Jennifer Ward-Lealand in 1988. They have two sons: Jack Louis Ward Hurst, born in 1997, and Cameron Lane Ward Hurst, born in 1999. In 1984, Hurst won the lead role of David Blyth's Death Warmed Up, New Zealand's first splatter movie. The plot saw Hurst's character weathering institutionalisation, sundry wackos, and a motorcycle chase in the tunnels below Waiheke Island. The film won the grand prize at a fantasy film festival in Paris. The same year Hurst began playing drummer Dave Nelson over two series of Heroes, about a band searching for fame. 3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but surprisingly weak for its broad title.
As stated in an earlier review, this book's scope is too narrow. Its focus on weapons is distracting; if you're trying to recreate an 18th century environment, you need to know about more than muskets. When did people start using the Franklin Stove? How available was printed material? How did people get around? How did they climb mountains, how did their ships work, how accessible was glass?

This is a handy book about weapons up through the 20th century, but not much else.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is badly named
If you buy this book hoping it will be about high tech things for GURPS, you will be disappointed. It should be called GURPS guns or something. It is basically the history of firearms, with a few things about explosivesand other sundry pieces of information thrown in.It is really quiteinteresting and well researched. However, it onlygoes up to moderntimes, and much of the text is devoted to ancient cannon, guns and soforth.

There are a few peices of information that could be useful to acampaign in here, but mostly it is just background material, and is moregeared towards being interesting reading than essential game rules. If youlike this kind of GURPS book, you would probably give it more stars than Idid. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!
One word describes this book - wow! This book is a great source of information for everybody that is seriously interested in environmental microbiology. The wealth of information given in this book is divided into 98 "short stories", most of them on average 10 pages long, each written by a different scientist. Even though the book is presented in a very scientific manner, it reads surprisingly easy, although the reader should have some knowledge of microbiology and biochemistry. This is not a textbook! Those of you who are looking for a pretty picture book should look elsewhere. There are no fancy appendices or glossaries, no CD-ROM, just an index. Pictures and graphs are held to a minimum and are used for the more complex concepts only. At the end of each chapter, a bibliography invites to further exploration of the particular topic. Here are the main sections of the book: 1. Introduction to environmental microbiology, 2. General methodology, 3. Water microbiology in public health, 4. Aquatic environments, 5. Soil, Rhizosphere, and Phyllosphere, 6. Subsurface and landfills, 7. Aerobiology, 8. Biotransformation and biodegradation. In conclusion, this book has quality and substance, just as you would expect from a book published by the ASM. ... Read more
