Product Description
Hunter provides a glimpse inside North Korean society, detailing the everyday life of people living in the most isolated, secretive society of the 20th century. In this recently declassified CIA study, she describes the world's most extreme cult society under the charismatic totalitarian leader, Kim Il-song, who ruled his people for 45 years--longer than any other leader of the 20th century. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars critical baseline study for measuring change in north korea
As another reviewer appropriately noted in assessing this book, "Kim Il-song's North Korea" is now 25+ years out of date.Because of this, Helen-Louise Hunter's study--edited down from a longer, classified report that she prepared while working at the Central Intelligence Agency--offers little meat for assessing the personal style and leadership track record of Kim Chong-il, who succeeded his father--Kim Il-song--as the absolutist leader of North Korea in 1994.Still, the book is a must-read for any scholar or journalist seeking to estimate the likelihood of future social collapse and regime change and/or to establish how much policy change Kim Chong-il has initiated.

The raw material of "Kim Il-song's North Korea" was meticulously culled from thousands of intelligence reports, most from defectors, which documented life in the North Korea of the mid-1970s, and this material is presented in a descriptive, generally non-judgmental manner. To the degree that any period in North Korea can be called a golden age, it was the years covered here.P'yongyang's social contract with the populace--the government will meet your basic economic and welfare needs if you cede to us all decisionmaking authority and forego any personal liberties--was basically intact at this time.So too were the country's industrial infrastructure and its tight controls on the physical movement of the citizenry, and serious questions of political stability rarely arose.Outrage over Kim Chong-il's leadership style had not yet crystallized and Kim Il-song was seen as a demigod who had helped liberate Korea from Japan's colonial occupation.

As even the most casual observer of North Korea today knows, the relative political and economic stability of the 1970s are long past, and for a dynamic understanding of North Korea in the 21st century, "Kim Il-song's North Korea" cannot stand alone.Neither, however, can we mine the full richness of more current books, including the gripping testaments of defectors, without referring back to Hunter's pathbreaking work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading and very limited
A book strictly for North Korea specialists. Certainly, as its reviews and the book-cover blurbs indicate a "unique" study. However what none of them say is; (1) this is strictly a basic socio-economic study; and (2) most tellingly, it may well be "from a declassified CIA study", but what they are not saying is that this study was written in 1980-81 and not updated etc for a 1999-2000 book publication release. Thus a study written in 1980 is dealing with 1970s material. Thus we have Kim Il-Sung's North Korea of the 1970s. We are reading about North Korea of 25+ years ago.

Material content and style presentation is straightforward and "just the facts". Nothing laid out in this book will surprise anyone who is familiar with Communist bloc social control systems. There is no analysis or extrapolation worth mentioning from the socio-economic presentation. Key aspects even within that range e.g. Party-Army-Population relationships are not examined in any analytical note.

This is a quite specific piece set in a quite specific time frame. Thus a read only for real North Korean buffs. As one reviewer has alluded to, the only real purpose of the description of conditions and life in North Korea of the 1970s, is to give us an indication as to the seeds of the (self-made) trouble and decline that has subsequently unfolded. The same mixture of issues that have brought down, principally from within, other Communist regimes, in this case merely with a particular North Korean spin to it.

Thus as a book - a very particular snapshot. In its own right, as well as in terms of content -...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book that provides much insight
These authors really did excellent research and they take the attentive reader behind the closed borders of North Korea. It is one of the last countries on earth that doesn't have diplomatic relations with the U.S. In this book the reader will experience the harsh reality of a poverty-striken country that happens to be the largest weapons exporter in the region. Another book that I highly recommend which is also based on a recent declassified CIA report and which discusses North Korea's secret but aggressive nuclear weapons program is the thriller THE CONSULTANT by Alec Donzi.

4-0 out of 5 stars a fascinating account
This book is a fascinating account of North Korea under Kim Il-sung.I learned many things, such as his emphasis on the family. The trouble with this book is that we do not know if it describes North Korea today, or just North Korea in the past. But the description is fascinating. ... Read more

Product Description

Set in a world of dark sorcery and strange creatures, where ambition, jealousy and war are rife, Knight’s Dawn begins a magical fantasy epic. On a hillside above a dark and forbidding forest, a wounded knight awakens, his memory gone. All he knows is that he has been in a mighty battle—but there has not been a battle in this place for more than a century. Tired, hungry, and alone, the knight must rely on the help of others if he is to survive. He is taken to the magnificent city of Zamerkand, but he will soon find that it is governed by corrupt and unscrupulous officials. With his life increasingly in danger, it seems that the only place the knight can find refuge is outside the city. Rather than risk the evils that lurk beyond its walls, he decides to join the ranks of the mercenary army that calls itself the Red Pavilions. But this is only the beginning of an extraordinary quest to avenge an ancient curse and to discover the truth of his past life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I'm always on the lookout for a good fantasy writer, and I had hoped Hunter was one.No such luck. The plot wanders with little direction from villain to seemingly indestructable villain, each of whom is dispatched in about four pages. The characters create neither sympathy nor revulsion - there is just very little here to care about. There are some inventive (fantasy) ideas, but nothing of interest to hang them on.Don't bother.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing erratic fantasy
This book seemed to have great ideas, and I believe the story-line is quite good. The writing style is dry and uninspiring and at times the writer seems to forget previous information about characters and events. Some strange/fanciful events seem to be added for no reason, other than to help the "hero" escape from his latest problem, or as an attempt to enliven a part of the book. Towards the end of the book it gets a bit ridiculous.
Overall - a great story that is badly told.

4-0 out of 5 stars Caught me by surprise!

I'd have to say this book was a complete surprise to me from what I was expecting. Right from the first chapter I was hooked and found it held my interest right to the end. The story was interesting as were the characters. It had a touch of fairytale, macabe, humor, romance great characters and lots of surprises.

Kim Hunter doesn't hold back when it comes to gritty discriptions so be prepared to be grossed out at times. He is not afraid to describe things in it's rawest form. This just adds more believability to the story in my opinion. If you like peaches and cream fantasy then this book is not for you. Otherwise give it a try. I don't think you will be disapointed.

I'm am definitely looking forward to reading the next book "Wizard's Funeral". I'd give this book 4 1/2 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kim Hunter, Oscar winner, stage legend, and cook
Actress Kim Hunter is probably best known for her Oscar winning turn as'Stella' in "A Streetcar Named Desire" (a role she also createdon Broadway) and as the sympathetic 'Dr. Zira' in the first three"Planet of the Apes" movies. In her combination autobiographyand cookbook, we get a glimpse into this actress' life and the culinarydelights that pleased her palate.

Published in 1975, Ms. Hunter writeswith great wit, insight to acting, lovingly about her family, and the upsand downs of both her personal and professional life.Somehow each dish mentioned in the book makes its way into a chapter. The chaptersthemselves are short and to the point and there are wonderful photossupplied by Ms. Hunter of family, friends, andher variousroles.

However, Ms. Hunter, who was blacklisted by McCarthy in the 50s,does not really give us any information about the time of her life otherthan going through her "Russian period".I wanted to learn moreabout McCarthyism and what it meant to her personally and professionally. She basically skimmed over that. It's probably her perogative to do that, but still, it's a piece of history that should be told and be understood byevery generation.

Overall, the book is very entertaining, and the recipeslook enticing. There's a chicken recipe I am wanting to try that lookseasy enough. But who has time to cook?If you like learning about theglory days of Hollywood and what an artist ina particular field goesthrough to achieve their accomplishments, plus if you like to dally in thekitchen, then Ms. Hunter's book will be a welcome addition to your library. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Better than the first
I bought all three of Kim Hunter's `The Red Pavilions' trilogy and I confess I struggled through the opener and found myself delaying a read of `Wizard's Funeral'. However, when I got round to it one rainy day, I found it a vast improvement on the opener. Primarily because there was a single plot line that runs throughout with the occasional side trip to provide diversion. Which was lacking in the first novel.
Basically, Soldier goes on a few quests again to locate the new High Magus with the unpronounceable palindromic name (as all the wizards in this series) and returns with him and the two Princes from another kingdom whose unruly ways in a perfect world have caused their exile. By unwittingly ordering the raven to free the prisoner in the sealed chamber just after attending the Wizard's funeral (as a kind of thank you) Soldier unleashes the evil wizard (another unpronounceable palindromic name) on Guthrum. Thousands die and Soldier ends up firstly uniting the Carthagan army against the Dog Clans, then having a side quest to an exotic land to recover his now memory-less wife, Layana (and reuniting with her madness cured luckily), who has been cast out of Zamerkand by the evil usurping Chancellor Humbold (who promotes Kaff to a general in the meantime), and finally ends up besieging his adopted home as Queen Vance is executed.
All in all a tidy second effort unique in style that takes me right back to Gormenghast at times as our protagonist skips like a Modesitt main character through an Alice in Wonderland world of myth and fairy tale come to life. We learn more of his past as a Scottish clansman before getting set up for the last novel which has to be read now out of sheer curiosity. Hunter's style is interesting and enthralling in a manner caused by never quite settling into a theme or pattern. It is as chaotic as it can be episodic but we now have continuity of main plot as well as main character.
If you're an avid fantasy fan give this a go. I suspect you'll like it more and more as you go along if you give it the time it needs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fanciful invention messes up a good story
Worse than the first book. A good story is badly told - dry and dissapointing writing with stupid or inapropriate events that appear for no apparent reason in what should have been a good story. The writer appears to borrow ideas from other writers and mixes existing "real" mythology alongside her own often good ideas. There appear to be attempts that humour that simply aren't funny. Ridiculous plot changes further hamper the bad writing and weird events. Pity - Good main characters, good original ideas.
I'm giving away my two books & won't be buying the 3rd. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Overly episodic
I bought all three of Kim Hunter's `The Red Pavilions' trilogy and I confess I struggled through the opener and find myself delaying a read of `Wizard's Funeral'. It became evident fairly early on that this was a first fantasy novel. It was the kind of novel that see-sawed from being good to poor in its plotline. Indeed the episodic nature means that the reader is drawn to some chapters, bored by others.
The story concerns the amnesiac knight, Soldier, who awakes on his grassy hill dressed and acting like he has just survived a great battle but he appears to have been transported in both time and place to a fantasy land where Hunter is able to redraw multiple European myths, fables and legends in a new context. From the fantastical to the grotesque our monosyllabic knight lurches through the book adhering to some kind of Arthurian chivalric code whilst turning his hand to all kinds of quests and feuds in an attempt to learn more about his own character. Unfortunately, it comes across as though the author is using the trilogy opener to settle on a character.
So, Soldier joins up withthe Carthagan army, befriends the spartan Velion, has a couple of battles, searches for an eagle egg and mothers a dragon, gets a part-time job as a relic sellers assistant, makes an enemy of the Queen's captain, inexplicably marries the Queen's sister, Layana, who is doubly cursed, firstly with the purple madness (which also afflicts Queen Vanda) secondly with one side of her face ruined by the beastman Vau and then sets of on a quest to save his wife which results in several adventures borrowing heavily from myth and fable. Throughout he is assisted by the boy-turned-raven, though `assisted' is perhaps wrong as his magical scabbard actually helps him more than anyone. By the end his wife rejects him (not really...though we're not given any hints why) thus setting up the next novel for his continuing adventures. In the background we have the atypical evil chancellor, Humbold, and the hunted witch-boy who's living with his mother in the sewers and jails of whom, no doubt, great things will appear.
This fantasy novel just never delivered. However, just before I'd put it down in exasperation, Hunter would moves into a plotline that was good, flowed and was well drawn. Then it would end and Soldier would inexplicably flounder before taking up on another passionate cause at which point it'd grip this reader again. So, episodic which meant no sense of continuity as the supporting characters dipped in and out at will, almost as though they were needed for Soldier to achieve certain items rather than joining him naturally. I will read the second as no purchase should go unwasted. I just hope it's a vast improvement on this first effort.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
Having read and loved the first two books of this series, I am very sorry to give such a bad review to this concluding volume, but except for it being the conclusion of the series-and therefore had to read this book- I cannot find any redeeming quality to this piece of trash.

I will enumerate what I have to say otherwise I will just keep on ranting:
1.Was this book even planned in any way?A magic quest is et up ex machina to just drive the plot with coincidence being always on the side of Soldier.
2.The enemy from the same dimension of Soldier is painted as a completely dehuminized, disgusting brute of a man!Hey, both of them have committed atrocities, but at least Soldier does not comb dung into his beard!
3. The dialogues are stilted.Does Soldier's wife have to start her every sentence with "Husband, ..."
4.The big apocalyptic battle is a joke where in the last ten pages a completely new species is introduced that has the answers to every strategic problem that the good guys have...

I can go on forever, but I won't.The first two books are full of magic, fun, and humor.I would easily give both of them at least four stars. But, this one being the conclusion of an ongoing series just serves to sally the accomplishments achieved in the previous two volumes. ... Read more
