5-0 out of 5 stars Best look at the Reformation available . . .
. . . if only for the brilliant concept of "technical orthodoxy."But, thankfully, there's a whole lot more going on here.

For one thing, the genesis of this book is utterly fascinating.John Jay Hughes made history as the first Anglican priest to be received as a Catholic priest without being reordained (he was conditionally ordained, which is a rite administered to those for whom the validity of their orders is questionable, but not regarded as essentially defective). This book is an apology for his view that the Anglican understanding of priesthood is in continuity with Catholic views (although one wonders what he might make of the chaos in the Anglican Communion following the consecration of Gene Robinson).

What's fascinating about the book, beyond what has to be the most thorough investigation of the issues of the validity of Anglican orders, is, what it uncovers about issues surrounding the reformation, especially regarding questions of "the Sacrifice of the Mass."That's where the concept of technical orthodoxy comes in.Hughes, over against the standard Catholic accounting of the late Medieval Church, admits there were some rather severe problems with the Church's self-understanding.These had to do primarily with, one might say, degraded, although not heretical, understandings about the Mass.He uses the term "technical orthodoxy" to describe these views. What he means is that although the Church did not slip into heresy, it only with barely minimal adequacy preserved proper understandings. The brilliance of this term is that it grants that while Catholic self-understandings had become very problematic they were not so degraded as to compromise the indefectibility of the Church.Additionally, it enables one to see that even though the Reformation's theological challenges to Catholic understandings arose from grave problems within the Medieval Church, the answers provided by the Reformers were not necessarily satisfactory.

Indeed, the Catholic Church was unable to adequately answer the challenge of the Reformation's new theological views (esp. regarding issues such as how the Mass is a sacrifice and the nature of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, but also issues about justification) for over four hundred years. In fact, the best Catholic theologians of the time were reduced to essentially saying something along these lines:"You're wrong, because what you say doesn't accord with what we have received."Thus, they preserved a proper understanding even as they were incapable of adequately explaining it.It took the recovery of the Mass in the vernacular, the reappropriation of the idea of Anamnesis, and a deeper appreciation of the role of the entire company of the faithful in the action of the Mass, brilliantly made manifest in the Vatican II documents, in subsequent proclamations by Paul VI and John Paul II, and in the actual vernacular liturgies themselves, for the Catholic Church to finally answer the challenges presented by the new theology of the Reformation.

Thus, the scope of the book is much larger than the mere question of the validity of Anglican orders, and the questions it raises and the answers it gives are quite far-reaching.On a personal note, this book, which I have owned for nearly thirty years, and which I finally thoroughly read and digested just this past summer, was a major factor in the completion of my decades-long pilgrimage from Protestantism to Catholicism. It, along with the works of N. T. Wright and Ben Meyer, provided the framework for me to grasp the theological essentials of the Catholic faith. For that, I am profoundly grateful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!A Must-Have! Alert the Pulitzer Committee!
Prof. Phillips has taken an outdated, somewhat stilted text (Computer Graphics: Principles & Practice) and turned it into a masterpiece - extremely informative and helpful while remaining accessible and enjoyable to read.Highly recommended for anyone and everyone interested in computer graphics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for every 3d programmer out there!
Are you tired of spending hours of your time searching for 3d documentation on the net? Are you tired of searching for books? Are you tired of spending $50 on a book only to find out that it doesn't cover anyof the subjects you were hoping for? Introduction to Computer Graphicscovers every aspect of 3d theory to get any beginner started. It is truethat some of the math requires more than high school education, but thatdidn't stop me when I read it in 9th grade. And if I can understand it,pretty much anybody can. If a person reads this book straight through, henot only will learn nothing but will have wasted his time too. Why? Well, half the book is full of mathematical equations and formulas. The authorbasically thinks like this: I supply you with the formulas and why theywork, you figure out how to put it in your program. Although I'm not tryingto attack the way the author wrote the book and a lot of his formulas comewith C++ code, there's some stuff he doesn't explain like: HOW TO PUT ITALL TOGETHER! A book like this could be classified as an excellent sourceof reference. The reason that this book stands out from all the rest isthat information isn't hidden in the words. It's all straightforwardexplanations and formulas with a lot of graphics to reinforce the reader'sknowledge. Also at the end of each chapter the author gives you a number ofexercises to do for those people out there that got too much time on theirhands. All together I loved it and I learned a LOT of valuable information.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible which ALL 3D Programmers NEED
This is the 3D programmers bible for 3D graphics. It is far from a breeze to read as the nature of the beast is not an easy subject.

One of the most wonderful things about this book is that it supplies an extensivebibliography about each subject covered.

It isn't a "how to"for DirectX or OpenGL it's more of a "here are the equations" for3D in pretty much every aspect.

You have to have it.

You don't? Buyit!

Expect to brush up on your maths tho! (unless yur a math head :))

Regards,

Ian

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding intro to both 2D and 3D graphics
There are plenty of equations and theory for the mathematician, but even better for folks like me (hackers), there is a nice sprinkling of C code and example images. If you need the most comprehensive reference, go with the unabridged version ("Computer Graphics:Principles and Practicies", all 1175 pages of it!), but if you are looking for an introduction, I would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for a beginner 3d coder!

This new introductory text to computer graphics is an adaptation of Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice,Second Edition, which remains the most comprehensive and authoritative work in the field. While retaining the currency and accuracy of the larger book, this abbreviated version focuses on topics essential for all beginners in computer graphics and provides expanded explanations for readers with little or no technical background. Worked examples have been added to illustrate important concepts and techniques, and program code has been written in the C language to enhance the book's usefulness. In addition, the book contains an extensive illustration program, with more than 50 full-color images.

This book authored by James D. Foley, Andries van Dam, Steven K. Feiner, John F. Hughes, and Richard L. Phillips and is an adaptation of the "Computer graphics : principles and practice".

Product Description
This handsome book presents three decades of artwork by John Alexander (b. 1945), who draws upon the rich imagery of his East Texas heritage to create art with a national impact. A native of Beaumont, a Gulf Coast oil and fishing-industry town, Alexander grew up in a region heavily influenced by Cajun, Creole, and African-American cultures. Early in his career, Alexander produced visionary landscapes and feverish, often self-revealing drawings that incorporated the imagery of the bayou. By the mid-1980s, the scale of his oil paintings had increased, and his landscapes had assumed a more hallucinatory character. The authors show how the artist's frenetic expressionism gave way to an interest in figuration and narrative, and how his approach to genre painting gave voice to his outrage at social injustice. In tracing the evolution of Alexander's work, the authors also explore the enduring theme of the natural environment and its depredation. ... Read more

I saw his exhibit at the Smithsonian in DC. I fell in love with his art. I wanted to buy his book with a lot of his illustration but it was too expensive. I definitely recommend this book to individuals who enjoy political cartoons and dark imagery. ... Read more

Product Description
John Buridan was a fourteenth-century philosopher who enjoyed an enormous reputation for about two hundred years, was then totally neglected, and is now being 'rediscovered' through his relevance to contemporary work in philosophical logic. The final chapter of Buridan's Sophismata deals with problems about self-reference, and in particular with the semantic paradoxes. He offers his own distinctive solution to the well-known 'Liar Paradox' and introduces a number of other paradoxes that will be unfamiliar to most logicians. Buridan also moves on from these problems to more general questions about the nature of propositions, the criteria of their truth and falsity and theconcepts of validity and knowledge. This edition of thatchapter is intended to make Buridan's ideas and arguments accessible to a wider range of readers. The volume should interest many philosophers, linguists and logicians, who are increasingly finding in medieval work striking anticipations of their own concerns. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating solutions to "unanswerable" paradoxes
Buridan was a 14th century French scientist and philosopher, whose idea of "impetus" anticipated Galileo's theory of inertia. George Hughes was a philosophy professor (the highest academic rank in British Commonwealth countries) at Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand) and a world-class logician. He translated Buridan's Latin and provided a clear commentary.

In this work, Buridan attempts to solve a number of semantic paradoxes, e.g. a one-person liar "What I am saying is false"; a two-person liar where Socrates says "What Plato is saying is true" and Plato says "What Socrates is saying is false"; and other even more elaborate ones. All these have in common is a proposition referring to itself, or a set of propositions where there is some circle of internal reference, hence the title.

Before Buridan attempts to solve the paradoxes, he discusses propositions that can not be true if they exist, but can the state of affairs described is logically possible. Such propositions he describes as "not possibly true" as opposed to "logically impossible" such as "This circle is square". Buridan gave the example of a not possibly true proposition "No proposition is negative". While the facts can be as the statement asserts, if the statement exists it cannot be true because it is a negative proposition itself.

Then Buridan discusses the validity of the inferences: "All propositions are affirmative, therefore no proposition is negative" and "No proposition is negative, therefore some proposition is negative".

The point is, the usual definition of validity is "it's impossible for the premise(s) to be true and the conclusion false". Thus the first would be invalid (because the conclusion is false when it exists even though it seems to follow from the premise) and the second valid (if the premise exists it is a negative proposition, so the conclusion is true). But with such self-referential statements, this definition of validity is inadequate, because in both those cases the they are contrary to other arguments with these forms (All As are B therefore no A is non-B, No Xs are Y therefore some X is Y).

Buridan defined a valid argument as "it's impossible for the fact to be as the premise says and not as the conclusion says".

This becomes important when he presents his ingenious solution to the paradoxes.

This is not of mere academic interest. A Wellington logician, Ross Powell, studied Buridan's solutions for his Master's thesis under Prof. Hughes. Since Mr Powell also has a degree in physics, he has subsequently applied Buridan's logic to solve vexing paradoxes in quantum mechanics, e.g. the measurement problem. His articles are available on the Internet. ... Read more

Four years later he became a member of Parliament.CHAPTER XVIITHE SUMMER OF 1864At the end of the first half of the year 1864, McClellan had been nominated by the Democracy, and the campaign was now in full swing. I recollect a caricature suggested by my father, not well executed, but sufficiently indicating his view of the situation, in which the Democratic candidate was represented as trying to stand with one foot on a war horse and the other on a peace donkey, and finding the team hard to drive.Among his files I find the following letter from Mr. Sedgwick describing the result of the vote on the recruiting bill, a measure which my father had much at heart.C. Product Description
Raised in a sleepy Eastern Shore farming town where he was the son of a popular high school teacher, Harry Roe Hughes's dream was to play for the New York Yankees. He never envisioned a life in politics, let alone becoming the governor of Maryland. As often happens, life steered a different course. In 1954, he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates and entered a political world where he would prosper for the next thirty-two years. He steadily rose from delegate to senator, from back bencher to committee chairman to majority floor leader, and from legislator to cabinet secretary to Governor.

Pitted against better known rivals, hopelessly short of money and running a campaign staffed with amateurs, Hughes came out of nowhere to win the September 1978 Democratic primary for governor in what remains one of the biggest upsets in Maryland political history. Two months later, he was elected in the largest landslide in state history to the first of two terms as Maryland's 57th governor.

In contrast to the rampant political partisanship and governmental paralysis so common today, Harry Roe Hughes took a workmanlike approach to public service, more interested in results than personal advancement. His record--major tax and education reform, protection of the Chesapeake Bay and more--is one of lasting significance to all Marylanders. He respected the policy-making role of the General Assembly and governed through consensus. He eschewed the political. His style reflected his personality and approach to life: decent, honest, efficient, low-key and businesslike.

Elected in an era of political scandal, Harry Roe Hughes restored Maryland's reputation for integrity and good government--an approach that, sadly, seems quaint and old-fashioned by today's standards. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Harry's Work of Fiction & Self-Promotion
Do not waste your time or money! Just make a donation to the state archives. This reckless work attempts to rewrite history using false andlibelous depictions. The only discernible purpose of the author, an all-but-forgotten politician who accepts awards for having protecting what remains a notoriously polluted bay, is shameful self-promotion in an attempt to keep his name alive. Harry Hughes unsuccessfully tries to take credit for a campaign success that was in truth a monumental and heroic victory for the pro-life movement in this politically liberal state. The true story of honesty, ethics and public service is the story of the young and hopeful Lieutenant Governor, Samuel Walter Bogley III, and his brave and beautiful young wife, (both defamed by Hughes in his book) who together gave a voice to thousands of pro-life voters and the innocent unborn children they joyfully defended. Hughes would have better served history by writing a confessional and crediting the courageous young man who inspired the movement that made him governor.Hughes would have remained "a lost ball in tall grass" if not for Bogley's supporters that kicked him through the goal to the governor's house. ...
