5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Grippando
Don't know where James Grippando gets his ideas for his books from but keep on writing Mr. Grippado. Can't wait for the next episode in Jack Swyteck's life!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Last to Die Gets the Big Bucks
When Sally Flemming hires hit man Clarence "Tatum" Knight, brother of Trial Lawyer Jack Swytek's pal Theo, to kill someone, Tatum can't believe the someone she wants killed is herself. But an unknown stalker had brutally stabbed Sally five years earlier and killer her five-year-old daughter. It's taken Sally five long years to get her revenge and to get that revenge, she has to die.

Someone does kill Sally and Tatum gets a letter in the mail inviting him to the reading of Sally's will. Tatum hires Jack to represent him through his brother. Tatum tells Jack why Sally had tried to hire him and he says he turned her down, however apparently she'd found somebody else. Jack goes to the reading of the will along with his new client and meets the other beneficiaries: Gerry Colletti the divorce lawyer who got Sally into the sack against her will, Miguel Rios her first husband, Mason Rudsky the assistant state attorney who believed that Sally had a lover who killed her daughter and that she was covering up and Deirdre Meadows the reporter who wrote a book blaming Sally for the death of her daughter. Sally leaves forty-six million dollars to this group, only there's a catch. It goes to the last one living.

At first the members of this group seem to believe that nobody's going to get the money, at least for a long time, but then Deirdre winds up dead, then Gerry and the police are looking at Jack's client. It appears as if somebody from outside the group is killing off the beneficiaries and Jack wants to find out who before somebody else dies.

This is a well written, taught thriller that I throughly enjoyed and I think you will too. The characters are gripping, the attention to detail is excellent and the red herrings believable. A perfect book to spend a weekend with.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Few Stumbles
Grippando is a fairly compelling writer but, as an attorney, his depictions of the legal process should be more realistic. For example, there is a brief scene in this book intended to demonstrate the protagonist's skill at trial work.Unfortunately, what is being attempted by another attorney is nothing less than fraud upon the court.Instead of being hauled up before the court and the state's disciplinary administrator, the attorney is permitted to quietly withdraw his manufactured accusations against Swytec's client. Not likely. In addition, the wildly coincidental and "happy" ending of the book seems unnecessary, since the Florida probate process would probably provide a similar, and much more believable, resolution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this
This was the first novel I read by James Grippando and I enjoyed it a great deal. The story was well written and moved along at a nice clip. I will be reading more of his books. There were some twists and turns but did not feel like the author tried to steer me of course.I hate it when the endings are surprising but unbelievable, that was not the case here.It came together really well.

If you like legal thrillers, strong characters and a enjoyable read I think you will like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should Have Been A Movie
Maybe it was and I just missed it.The plot reads like a perfect movie mystery thriller. A wealthy women is murdered leaving behind very unusual will.Six disparate individuals are named as potential beneficiariesto her $46 million estate. The catch is only one will inherit that whole enchilada - the last surviving member.

So why were these six individuals named in the will?None are related to the murdered woman (save for the ex-husband).One is totally unknown to the other five including the executor of the will. This is the mystery that lawyer Jack Swyteck and his alter-ego sidekick Theo Knight are entrusted to unravel.

Author James Grippando does a masterful job spinning this fast-action storyline interspersed with his wry humor and gruesome detail.I enjoyed it and would highly recommend "Last to Die" as a 5-star experience. ... Read more

Product Description
The battle around Falaise in Normandy during August 1944 saw the destruction of the German Seventh army. This book details the chain of events which led to the German retreat and the ensuing liberation of France. The British and American breakout battles had released motorised units to wage a more mobile war against the German static defensive tactics. At Falaise, the armoured units of US Third Army encircled the German Seventh Army, squeezed them into an ever-smaller cauldron of chaos and crushed them against the advancing British Second Army. The results were devastating: those troops able to escape the disaster fled, those who remained were killed or captured and vast quantities of armour and equipment were lost. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Falaise 1944: Death of an army
I recently learned that my father participated in the battle of the Falaise Pocket as part of the 1st Polish Armoured Division. The book covers the battle from both sides of the battle and gives a good perspective of all the participating Allied and German Armies.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Noncritical Review of an Important Allied Campaign
On the surface, Mr Ford has delivered an acceptable overview of the campaign leading up to the Falaise Pocket but I consider it highly biased and incomplete. It's a parochial vision that favors British participation over the US and propagates Montgomery's "save face" line of propaganda in keeping the Germans tied down in the east to allow the Americans to break out in the west.
A few lines are given to Operation Cobra,a few words to the Mortain Offensive, another few words to Patton moving to Argentan and then toward the Seine and the rest of the book is given to the British, Canadians and Poles. Except for the first map of Brittany, all the other maps, especially the 3-D maps as well as the color illustrations are British-centric. The author calling Patton an anglophobe is also a cheap shot. With the treatment that Patton received in the Med from both Montgomery and Alexander plus the stunts Montgomery pulled in Normandy and at home, plus the fact that Montgomery wasn't producing, one shouldn't wonder of Patton's regard for the British.
My biggest complaint is not an act of commission but of omission. There is no real criticism of the command structure: Eisenhower, Bradley, Montgomery and to a lesser extent Dempsey and Simonds. The top three generals have a lot to answer for either their overcautiousness or ineptness in handling the closing and none of it was addressed in this book.
Another signal that Mr Ford didn't do enough homework is his short Bibliography which contains all secondary sources.
I suggest if you want a better understanding and a more rounded view of this important August period that you also read the Martin Blumensen book, "The Battle of the Generals", along with Carlo D'este's "Decision in Normandy" and Samuel Mitcham's "Panzers in Normandy" or "Retreat to the Reich".

3-0 out of 5 stars Was the German Army in Normandy Destroyed?
In Osprey's Campaign #149, Falaise 1944: Death of an Army, veteran Osprey contributor Ken Ford (not Gordon Rottman, as mistakenly shown on jacket photo) continues his survey of the major phases of the 1944 Normandy campaign. As usual, Ford's narration is clear and succinct; he has done a superb job of synthesizing the various existing secondary sources on this subject - although it is less clear if the author has actually incorporated any primary research information. The Battle of Falaise was one of the more controversial phases of the battle of Normandy and Field Marshal Montgomery was forced to relieve a number of subordinates, and the failure to close the "Falaise pocket" led to recriminations in the Allied command.

The standard sections on the origins of the campaign, opposing commanders, plans and forces are informative and useful. However, there are two points in the opposing forces section that the author fails to address. First, at the start of the Normandy breakout battles in July, there were about 1.4 million Allied troops in Normandy versus fewer than 400,000 Germans, giving the Allies an overall 3-1 or better numerical superiority in personnel. In terms of tanks and artillery, the Allied superiority was even more pronounced. Second, Ford makes little or no effort to discuss the heterogeneous composition of the Commonwealth forces, particularly the Canadians and the Poles. On the face of it, the Canadian units tended to be larger but less experienced than the British units, and Ford doesn't mention that Canadian commanders were sometimes leery about being used as "cannon fodder" by the British (remember Dieppe and Hong Kong 1941?). As for the Poles, I had to cringe when Ford described the Falaise campaign as "their first battle." Major General Maczek and his men were based on the original 10th Mechanized Brigade and had been killing Germans since 1939; these men were all veterans by 1944, even if the "Polish 1st Armored Division" had not fought previously as a unit.

Falaise 1944 includes five 2-D maps: the Allied frontline before the breakout battles; the breakout; Operation Bluecoat; forming the Falaise pocket; the German collapse. The three 3-D Maps are: Capture of Mount Pincon; Operation Totalise and Tractable; sealing the pocket. It seems to me that Osprey's 3-D maps from 5-6 years ago were more detailed than the new format, although the organization of the text has gotton better. The three battle scenes by Howard Gerrard are: American tanks and infantry overrunning a German 75mm anti-tank gun, July 1944; counterattack by SS `Das Reich' division against Poles on Mount Ormel; escaping troops from German 7th Army under attack from RAF typhoons.

Although Ford's narrative is sound, the vital question of why the pocket was not closed more promptly is explained only in general terms. American General Bradley did not request a boundary adjustment that might have allowed US troops to close the gap and Montgomery perhaps did not instill the Canadians with a sense of urgency in closing the pocket. These explanations certainly contain elements of truth, but do not necessarily explain what happened. Ford fails to mention that the operation was a "converging attack" where US, Canadian, British and Polish forces were to meet in the center - this is a very difficult mission for a Coalition to execute, based on differences in communications, doctrine and willingness to accept risks (a perfect scenario for fratricide). I think that the nature of the pocket and the importance of closing the gap - so clear on maps today - was less clear to tired commanders on smoke obscured battlefields in 1944. The Canadian commanders had seen numerous British attacks repulsed at great cost for little gain, and they chose to fight a methodical battle that was slow but sure.

The real significance of the Falaise campaign is the entire issue of whether or not the Allies were able to "destroy" the bulk of German forces in Normandy - the 5th Panzer and 7th Armies. Ford makes no effort to answer this question, but merely provides the standard Allied "guestimate" that about 90-115,000 German troops were caught in the Falaise pocket, of whom 10-15,000 were killed, 50,000 captured and the rest escaped. Based on these numbers, Ford concurs with the Allied assessment that the German forces in Normandy were more or less destroyed. However, if Ford had taken a look at some of the information now available on German casualties, he might be less certain of this conclusion. If the Allies trapped about 100,000 Germans in the Falaise pocket, that means that about 280,000 German troops then in the Normandy area were not in the pocket and that there were another 200,000 or so other Germans in the rest of France. Apparently, by the time the net started to close at Falaise only about 25% of the German troops in Normandy were trapped. Furthermore, it is also clear from German records that even most units trapped inside the pocket were able to save 40-50% of their personnel, which gave them a cadre to rebuild. German sources indicate that those armor units that escaped from Falaise still had about 80 tanks left operational after the battle, and while this is not a large number, Ford mentions that the Germans had held up the Canadian 2nd Corps for over a week with only 35 tanks. Ford makes no mention of the "September Miracle" but it is clear that the Germans were able to salvage enough from Normandy to stop the Allies on three weeks after Falaise on the German-Dutch borders. I'm sure the British 1st Airborne troops didn't think that the German 2nd SS Panzer Corps was "destroyed" when they met them at Arnhem. Falaise was an Allied victory, but it was not decisive. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Short Book
A short book, only 80 pages. This is the first book in the "Raid" Series that I have read.It covered the lead up to the raid, the mission itself and the aftermath.I enjoyed the then and now photos.Lots of maps, I like maps.It was nice to learn about Major John Frost before his exploits at A Bridge Too Far in Arnhem

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Raid Titles to Date
The British raid on the German radar station near Bruneval in France on 28 February 1942 is widely regarded as one of the classic special operations raids of the Second World War. Never mind that it was conducted by British paratroopers not commandos, it is still viewed as a model `commando-type' raid. In Osprey's Raid No. 13, British author Ken Ford details the planning, preparation and execution of the Bruneval Raid. It is an exciting read and perfect for this format. This is one of the best Raid series volumes to date.

The author begins with the genesis of the radar war between England and Germany in 1940-41 and the intelligence gaps which led to the raid. Intelligence specialists should appreciate the author's discussion of the British priority intelligence requirements (what the new German radars looked like, how they were used and on what frequencies) and how IMINT and ELINT provided some insight, but not enough to answer the key questions. Clearly, understanding the new generation of German air defenses radars would be critical in order for the RAF to operate effectively over occupied Europe, so gaining physical access to one of these radars became imperative. Once the British selected the radar site at Bruneval as their target - primarily because it was right on the coast - military politics shaped the raid. Even though the Royal Marine Commandos were probably best suited and trained for such a raid, the new British Airborne Regiment was anxious to prove itself and one company was selected for the operation. Although the author does not comment upon it, it must have occurred to the planners that choosing an airborne unit would sacrifice surprise, since transport planes could hardly expect to approach an air defense radar without being detected. The author does note the problems that surfaced during training, where the paratroopers had difficulty coordinating with the Royal Navy motor gunboats for pick-up. Again, the Commandos had already worked with the Royal Navy and would have been a better choice, by this was a case where service politics played a role.

The author does a fine job describing German defenses at Bruneval, the run in to the target, the drop, the raid and the withdrawal. It is gripping material, at points. In short, some things went wrong, but the raid achieved its objectives of returning to England with captured radar components, enabling the development of countermeasures such as Window.Although the raiders had operational surprise, they failed to achieve tactical surprise and the nearby German troops were soon moving against them. Overall, the author does a great job telling this story but there were a few interesting sidebars that could have received more attention. Just as predicted by the pre-raid training exercise blunders, six of the raiders - 5 percent of the raiding force - were left behind and captured by the Germans. It would have been interested to learn more about what the Germans learned about British raiding tactics from these prisoner interrogations.

Graphically, the volume has two 2-D maps (objectives and German defenses; routes of the raiding force to/from the objective) and two 3-D BEV maps (the attack and the withdrawal). It also has two battle scenes (dismantling the radar set and clearing the way to the beach) by Howard Gerrard. The photos throughout the volume are quite good, particularly RAF aerial recon photos used in the planning of the raid.

Excellent service, prompt delivery, excellent conditon
as described, packaged well.
Would use again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Moderately Useful
As a brief "masterclass", Ken Howards's book is useful as a simple demonstration. However, Howard, is one of those watercolorists who do not exploit the natural white of the paper (the "classic" and best technique), preferring instead to "touch up" finished paintings with chinese white. Thus, some of his pictures have a pasty look that is closer to gouache than to watercolor.

Also, the book is relatively short, so it was frustrating to find that many pages were devoted, not to Howard's watercolors, but to oil and mixed media paintings. The text seems like a direct transcription of the video class which is also available.Hence, the conversational style seems misplaced in a text book. For those looking to be see watercolor pictures of Venice, there are many better books out there. That being said, there is always something to be learned from other painters so I've given it a few stars. ... Product Description

During the past three decades, urban groundwater has emerged as one of the world’s most pressing issues. Explosive population growth, most prevalent in cities, has placed an inordinate demand on groundwater supply, prompting concerns for its long-term sustainability at a time when the quality of available groundwater resources is being increasingly degraded by anthropogenic activity. Cities less reliant on groundwater for potable supply are equally obliged to manage subsurface water with cautious respect since rising groundwater levels can generate a myriad of problems such as unstable land slopes, flooded basements, tunnels and electrical utilities, and the release of polluted water to urban wetlands, springs and streams.

Challenges in Urban Groundwater is premised on a growing recognition that most urban groundwater problems are not uniquely associated with any particular region or hydrogeological environment, and much can be learned by understanding the successes and failures of others. It showcases the best urban groundwater papers presented at the International Geological Congress held in Florence, Italy in 2004, and is supplemented by contributions solicited from other world experts active in urban groundwater research. Topics covered range from the urban water balance and rising groundwater levels to groundwater contamination and the role of aquifer modelling.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your money
I bought this book thinking it would have ways to do yoga with your baby (moves for us both). That is not what it has!It basically tells you different ways to involve your baby in your routine, but they are neither clever nor fun for the little one.If it had more moves that your infant could actually do that would be good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous!Brought me back in shape while spending valuable time with my daughter.
I really enjoyed this book. Not only is it clearly written, well-photographed and a good size but it proved inspirational.Being a yoga novice did not prevent me from trying some of the even more complex positions as the text is intuitive and the photographs are easy to follow.

Although most of the yoga is geared for mom there is plenty of material for your baby too - the last review seems to have missed the subtitle of "The yoga workout for new moms".How much can you expect a baby to do?Downward dog?I think not!! ... Read more

El Centro is also the largest American city to lie entirely below sea level (- 50 feet). The city is conveniently near the global cities of San Diego and Los Angeles as well as placed between the major cities of Phoenix and San Diego.Founded in 1906 W. F. Holt and C.A. Barker purchased the land on which El Centro was eventually built for about forty dollars an acre and invested $100,000 in improvements. As one historian of Valley life put it, "in only five months El Centro went from a barley field to a city..." .It is home to retail, transportation, wholesale, and agricultural industries. There are also two international border crossings nearby for commercial and noncommercial vehicles. The city's population was 37,835 at the 2000 census. The 2006 population is 40,563.Geography El Centro is located at 32°47 31 N 115°33 47 W / 32.7... ... Read more

Excerpt: Have I The Right? was The Honeycombs' debut single and biggest hit. It was composed by Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley, who had made contact with the Honeycombs (then playing under the name of either The Sherabons or The Sheratons) in the Mildmay Tavern in Islington, where they played a date. Shortly afterwards the group was granted an audition with indie record producer Joe Meek, and they played the two songs Howard and Blaikley had just given them. Meek decided to record them there and then. After the recording session the group called themselves The Honeycombs, but it is unclear who invented this name. Meek used his apartment at 304 Holloway Road, Islington as a recording studio. Three UK #1 hits were produced there: "Johnny Remember Me" by John Leyton, "Telstar" by The Tornados and the last of them, "Have I the Right?". Conspicuous in "Have I the Right?" is the prominent part of the drums that carry the song. Their effect was enhanced by making the members of the group stamp their feet on the wooden stairs to the studio. Meek recorded the sound with five microphones he had fixed to the banisters with bicycle clips. For the finishing touch someone beat a tambourine directly onto a microphone. The recording was somewhat sped up, reportedly to Dennis D'Ell, the singers grief, who regretted that he could not reproduce this sound on stage. "Have I the Right?" was released in June 1964 on the Pye record label (Pye 7N 15664). The sales started slowly, but by the end of July the record started to climb in the UK Singles Chart. At the end of August the record reached #1. Outside the UK "Have I the Right?" was a big success too. The song became #1 in Austr...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=9844127 ... Read more

Product Description
When we see the word blueprint we usually think of a technical drawing or other image rendered as white lines on a blue background produced by an architect. A blueprint is a detailed plan of action and everyone should develop a blueprint in order to plan for success in life. The men and women in this book have, in interesting and innovative ways, developed their own blueprints that paved the way for their success. As I interviewed these people, I found that there are as many ways to plan for success as there are people who create those plans. I was fascinated as I learned from these highly successful people what they did to succeed in their various professions. A successful businesswoman once told me that when she was involuntarily separated from her last corporate job she took the opportunity to sit back and take a deep breath, discover what she really wanted to do, and to explore her passion. She said she didn t write anything down but from just taking some time out to think and explore, she came up with her path to success. At times, successful people have to push through hard times and setbacks. I am always intrigued by the various methods they use to overcome difficulties. Some of them have gone on to teach others what they learned as they went back to the drawing board and created a new blueprint that led them to success.I believe you will find that your time will be well spent in reading this book. I think you will find that these people have something to say that is worth listening to. I know that I did. ... Read more

Excerpt: Chad Javon Ochocinco (born Chad Javon Johnson; January 9, 1978) is an American football wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Bengals in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He played college football at Oregon State. Ochocinco has been selected to the Pro Bowl six times and named an All-Pro three times. He legally changed his surname from Johnson to Ochocinco prior to the 2008 regular season to reflect the two numbers on his Bengals uniform. While he references his last name as two words "Ocho Cinco", his legal last name is condensed into one word, as spelled on his name change application. Johnson was born on January 9, 1978, in Miami, Florida. After graduating from Miami Beach Senior High School in 1996, Johnson attended Langston University, a historically black university in Langston, Oklahoma, but did not play football. In 1997 he transferred to Santa Monica College, a junior college in Santa Monica, California, where he was a teammate of future Carolina Panthers star wide receiver Steve Smith. In 2000, he transferred to Oregon State University after being aggressively recruited by coach Dennis Erickson. Alongside future Bengals teammate T. J. Houshmandzadeh, he led his team to an 11-1 season and a victory over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl that year. He also broke a school record for the longest touchdown reception with a 97-yard reception in a game against Stanford University. The Cincinnati Bengals chose Johnson in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft. Ochocinco saw moderate playing time as a rookie, catching 28 p...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7761399 ... Read more
