Hugh Marston Hefner was born in Chicago on April 9, 1926. The first issue of Playboy magazine, featuring the now-famous calendar photo of Marilyn Monroe, was produced in 1953 on a card table in his South Side apartment. Playboy grew at a phenomenal rate and by the end of the decade, the magazine was selling more than a million copies a month. At the start of the Sixties, Hef began to live out the "Good Life" depicted in the pages of his publication. He hosted a popular syndicated television show called Playboy’s Penthouse, purchased the Playboy Mansion, and opened the first Playboy Club on the Near North Side of Chicago. Throughout the Sixties, Hef and Playboy became what Chicago columnist Bob Greene has called "a force of nature." Hef wrote an extended series of editorials titled "The Playboy Philosophy," championing the rights of the individual and challenging the country’s heritage of puritan repression. By 1971, when Playboy Enterprises went public, the magazine was selling 7 million copies a month and there were 23 Playboy Clubs, resorts, hotels and casinos with more than 900,000 members worldwide. Hef established a second residence in Los Angeles, which quickly became known as Playboy Mansion West, and in 1975 decided to settle there permanently. In 1980, Hef championed the reconstruction of the Hollywood sign (then in serious disrepair) and was honored with a star on the Hollywood walk of fame for his efforts.

Since the mid-Eighties, daughter Christie Hefner has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Playboy Enterprises, but Hef continues to serve as the magazine’s editor-in-chief. ... Read more

Great Book to have....A Must for all Fans...
Truly enjoyed the book, it's a beauty to be able to see so many beautiful woman over the years presented by Playboy in one single book.

Yeah!!!!
I bought this book to see a friend's girlfriend naked.I know, shallow, but what the hell.Apparently my friend (39) is shacking up with a real live playmate from the 70's.She is 52, but still HOT!Had to see her in her prime though and this book pulled through.My Dad loves it also, have not got around to really reading it yet, but it does seem to live up to what it promises, ALL of the centerfolds in all of their glory.

Be wary of ordering procedures from Amazon
I think your ordering procedures have dramtically changed for the worse over the last few months.I find it is very easy in reviewing an order from Amazon, to duplicate an order just by reviewing the item, particularly when going back to check on something.This has happened to me twice and I was able to catch it the second time.I realize the buyer has to be paying close attention but this was not the case in the past with amazon.It seems that your ordering procedures make it extremely easy to double order something.I am not happy about these changes.

Great for the collector
This book is the definitive collection of all the Playmates since the very begining. For the collector, or even the fan, of all things Playboy this serves as a great guide to all the beautiful women who have graced the pages of the magazine. Not only are the photos stunning, but the short-but-sweet stories of where they are now and what they've been doing since appearing make for enjoyable reading. I've had the pleasure of meeting many of the ladies and getting this book autographed is like getting your yearbook signed...by all beautiful women.

One caveat though: if you've got the previous edition (the 40th) you'll find the only change is the addition of the last ten years of Playmates.

Wow
The price which Amazon is currently offering this book for is absurd! I'm an automotive historian, and I have a huge library of books, many purchased at sale prices such as this. Over time I have watched many of them rise in value up to ten times what I have invested in them. For the price of taking your real girl friend out to a nice restaurant you can have over 600 beautiful girls at your fingertips! The quality and presentation of this volume is impressive. There's absolutely no way you will be disappointed if you're even remotely considering adding this to your library, and years from now it will be a significant collectors item. Go for it!!!!!

What A Treasure
Very seldom are we able to enjoy the female form in all it's glory to this magnitude. What a glorious way to observe how our culture and attitude towards what is erotic has changed over the past 50 plus years. I have to say I found the women of the 70s and 80s before silicone implants and starving themselves became fashionable to be the most beautiful. This book is an absolute steal at the price Amazon sells it for. I decided to pass on the smaller version after reading several reviews and step up to the real deal. You will not be disappointed if you do as well.

Playboy Center Fold Book and Case
I bought the Playboy Center fold Book and Case and have yet to see the book. It is locked in the case and I can not get in it. I bought it for my sons birthday present in Feb and he has yet to receive it. I wrote back to the sender and asked if there was a combination that I should know about and he told me that the right lock was broken and I needed to pry it open. I told him that I did not want to do that for fear I would brake the case. I still have not heard from him and I have still not seen the book or been able to give it to my son. I am not pleased.

Other Thoughts: The quality of this book is off the charts! In particular i liked the small attention to detail on how to pull the book out of it's briefcase -a practical/stylish strap sits in the case to lay the book on and pull it out with later.You can't wrong with this purchase @ it's current price. A different side to a childhood icon
Shel Silverstein to most people will always be remebered for his work for children, but tell them he was a songwriter and more surpisingly did cartoons for Playboy, they won't believe you. Through these works we see a side rarely seen or remembered by many. In these works we see a blossoming young artist, traveling exotic locales such as Mexico, London, Paris, Spain, Africa, even a nudist colony and Fire Island. In each of these places he takes his own spin on them though his drawings and writing and creates something very intriging.

Hardcore Silverstein fans need only apply
My father used to read me Shel Silverstein's books as a child. I now read them to my son, bits and peices at a time. So when I saw this book, I thought what more perfect gift could I give to my father. A reminder of our time long past, as well as a cheeky look at one of the most prolific man0child authors of the modern age. This book covers Silverstein's time wioth Playboy magazine, and it is a terrific insight to the slightly off kilter brilliance that was Shel Silverstein. If your a Playboy afficianado, this is a must. If your a Shel Silverstein enthusiast, don't hesitate. A dabbler with "Where the Sidewalk Ends" might not be an anthused, but this is great work from a great mind.
