From the author: In the United States, 71% of all deaths among persons aged 10-24 years result from 4 causes: motorvehiele crashes, other unintentional injuries, homicide, and suicide. Results from the 2005 national Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) indicated that during the 30 days preceding the survey, many high school students engaged in behaviors that increased their likelihood of death from these 4 causes: 9.9% had driven a car or other vehicle when they had been drinking alcohol, 18.5% had carried a weapon, 43.3% had drunk alcohol, and 20.2% had used marijuana. In addition, during the 12 months preceding the survey, 35.9% of high school students had been in a physical fight and 8.4% had attempted suicide. Substantial morbidity and social problems among youth also result from unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, including human immunodeficiency virus infection. During 2005, a total of 46.8% of high school students had ever had sexual intercourse, 37.2% of sexually active high school students had not used a condom at last sexual intercourse, and 2.1% had ever injected an illegal drug. Among adults aged [greater than or equal to] 25 years, 61% of all deaths result from 2 causes: cardiovascular disease and cancer. Results from the 2005 national YRBS indicated that risk behaviors associated with these 2 causes of death were initiated during adolescence. During 2005, a total of 23.0% of high school students had smoked cigarettes during the 30 days preceding the survey, 79.9% had not eaten [greater than or equal to] 5 times/day of fruits and vegetables during the 7 days preceding the survey, 67.0% did not attend physical education classes daily, and 13.1% were overweight. From the author: Priority health risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of mortality, morbidity, and social problems among youth and adults often are established during youth, extend into adulthood, and are interrelated. The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six categories of priority health risk behaviors among youth and youth adults: behaviors that contribute to unintentional and intentional injuries, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual behaviors, dietary behaviors, and physical activity. The YRBSS includes a national, school-based survey conducted by CDC and state and local school-based surveys conducted by state and local education agencies. This report summarizes results from the national survey, 24 state surveys, and nine local surveys conducted among high school students during February through May 1993. In the United States, 72% of all deaths among school-age youth and young adults are from four causes: motor vehicle crashes, other intentional injuries, homicide, and suicide. Results from the 1993 YRBSS suggest many high school students practice behaviors that may increase their likelihood of death from these four causes: 19.1% rarely or never use a safety belt, 35.3% had ridden during the 30 days preceding the survey with a driver who had been drinking alcohol, 22.1% had carried a weapon during the 30 days preceding the survey, 80.9% ever drank alcohol, 32.8% ever used marijuana, and 8.6% had attempted suicide during the 12 months preceding the survey. Substantial morbidity and social problems among adolescents also result from unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases including HIV infection, YRBSS results indicate that in 1993, 53% of high school students had experienced sexual intercourse, 52.8% of sexually active students had used a condom during last sexual intercourse, and 1.4% ever injected an illegal drug. Among adults, 67% of all deaths are from three causes: heart disease, cancer, and stroke. In 1993, many high school students practiced behaviors that may increase the risk for these health problems: 30.5% of high school students had smoked cigarettes during the 30 days preceding the survey, only 15.4% had eaten five or more servings of fruits and vegetables during the day preceding the survey, and only 34.3% had attended physical education class daily. YRBSS data are being used nationwide by health and education officials to improve school health policies and programs designed to reduce risks associated with the leading causes of mortality and morbidity. At the national level, YRBSS data are being used to measure progress toward achieving 26 national health objectives and one of eight National Education Goals. (J Sch Health. 1995;65(5):163-171)

Product Description

In the midst of the Great Depression, America’s World’s Fairs of the 1930s gave hope to millions, sustaining the assembled with visions of future progress. These grand expositions in Chicago, San Diego, Dallas, Cleveland, New York, and San Francisco showcased an optimistic, consumerist future society and symbolized the Modernist message of progress through design.

Designing Tomorrow celebrates the influence and impact of these international expositions. Offering an overview of the fairs and detailed discussions of individual works, distinguished authors examine how designers reconciled radical “European” Modern style with American tradition. Works by Edward H. Bennet, Gilbert Rohde, George Keck, Richard Neutra, and others illuminate the ways in which Modernism became an integral component of the vocabulary of American design.  Additional essays highlight the visual power of these expositions, featuring rare artifacts and photographs of objects including models and plans for “the houses and cities of tomorrow,” streamlined trains, modern furnishings, and the first televisions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Parody of a mystery
I am perfectly aware that different folks like different kind of mysteries, but...
My preference for gritty police procedurals and Scotish noir doesn't prevent me from enjoying diverse authors like M.C. Beaton or Simon Brett.
But, this derivative little booklet is like a first draft of the small town writing circle. The inanity of the plot, the shear incompetence of everybody involved with the case is distracting. Ms. Bradford must be a romance writer in the making. I just hope she lives the mystery genre well alone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Judge ye Not, That You Will Be Judged.
In the dead part of summer, August and the first part of September, as students wrap up leisure to start studying book again instead of bodies in bikinis, several dead bodies surface. On the beach and boardwalk in the Northeast, fun in the sun and, later, behind closed doors are noted for this peaceful, quiet town. That was before Mark M., a pedifile who's never measured up to grown women, uses and abuses (even to using a mallet to break down a door) Cindy at random as she lookied up at the star-filled night sky.She becomes his first victim.Every night he'd wander the neighborhood looking for prey.

Before long, there were other victims of this serial killer, but he always remembered Cindy as it all happened so easily from the back, the way he took his pleasure. He'd learned how to work it that way so as not to get caught with DNA,If a girl told, she could not prove anything. He gave a false name to each of them.He told Honey why he did things backward, and she immediately knew he was the killer, a jury of one.

In her mind, she had his convicted and executed for all the strife he had caused her, the only woman who truly loved him.It was not his body but his intellect she cared so much as to put herself in danger. As long as she faced him with innocense as she'd been able to do previously, she would be safe frtom his long knife. He thought he's covered all paths leading to him, that no one alive could point the finger of guilt at him, but he had misjudged Ms. Honey. She knew what he was capable of, what he couldn't do no matter how pretty the girl , but the revealing clothes always caught him off-kilter.At first, he'd just look, smile (chuckle a bit), then make plalns to take out his frustrations for being a damaged soul in a damaged body.He chose random victims, all of whom didn't know what hit them.

How could she expose him without letting others know her little secret? She had witnessed his multiple personalities, one a mean, vindictive (older than the others), hurtful monster. She knew he was the murderer so she had to run, or she could become his next victim.

3-0 out of 5 stars A quick, enjoyable mystery read
This book introduces newspaper reporter Elise Jenkins and police detective Mitch Burns. As they begin their careers and their relationship with each other, they confront a serial killer.Elise and Mitch are likeable, although Elise both of them tend to blush and weep more than is truly practical for their occupations. The book provides a good story with good characters and a surprising solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent murder mystery
This is the first in a great series of books. Excellent writing and a fast read. I was buying the newest one when I saw I had not reviewed this one. Could have sworn I did.
I have turned several people onto this series. The author is a wonderful warm woman who does book signings and has a great web-site. I recommend this book to all. You will NOT regret it and you will be hooked.
Buy at least the second one Forecast of Evil at the same time so you are not stuck waiting. The books get even better as they go along.
Andy

3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry to say I was disappointed.
Although I found the mystery intriguing and was unable to figure out the who the murderer was, the writing itself, as well as the almost "simple" leads, were so much less intriguing that I basically skimmed this book.

If anyone who has liked this book is interested in a truly wonderful book based at the Jersey shore, try Chris Grabenstein's "Tilt-a-Whirl" and "Whack A Mole"---great characterizations, mystery and laughs!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Down-to-Earth Mystery
If you're looking for a book to curl up with on a cold night, this Jenkins & Burns mystery is perfect.Ms. Bradford's descriptions of the scenery pull you into the swirling blizzard, and hold you as snowbound as her characters. Her ability to give you a window into her characters wraps you up in the story, until you're in so deep, you can't put the book down.

In this second Jenkins & Burns mystery, Laura Bradford revisits Elise Jenkins and her boyfriend, Mitch Burns as they take a much needed vacation on Mackinaw Island, Michigan.Unfortunately for them, their plans for relaxation disappear after a fellow vacationer's disappearance turns into murder. The culprit could be anyone--from the retired cop to the drifter kid to the town's `freaky hermit'--and Ms. Bradford works to keep her readers on their toes until the very end.

By weaving her story with everyday characters you can connect with and an intriguing plot you can lose yourself in, Ms. Bradford does an excellent job of entrancing her readers without muddying the waters with unnecessary elements.I won't spoil the plot for you here--what would be the fun in that?--but I will recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good down-to-earth mystery.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good story in a great setting
Reporter Elise Jenkins and police detective Mitch Burns continue to develop their relationship during a winter trip. The trip becomes more eventful than they planned as Mitch is pressed into service to solve a series of crimes during a huge snowstorm. There are a few too many coincidences for my taste, and sometimes I am not sure why Elise and Mitch trust the people they do, but it is still a good story with likeable characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars a serial killer in a winter wonderland turned nightmare
Laura Bradford's Forecast of Evil is a chilling fast-paced mystery filled with a serial killer, trapped guests, and past secrets waiting to be revealed. Lighter than the typical serial killer thriller, this mystery provides enough details and clues to keep readers on the edge but not too many to blunt the fun hunt for the perpetrator with too much gore and violence.

Pete Garner joined the men's outdoors group upon the advice of his doctor for his cardiac health. When he discovered the hobby of orienteering, however, his competitive nature took over. He had to win. Detective Mitch Burns and reporter Elise Jenkins have come to this winter wonderland hideaway to forget the past --- only the wonderland aspect is quickly becoming a nightmare when Pete's body is discovered. A blizzard is brewing on the remote Michigan island and suddenly a phone call --- a serial killer might be hiding on the island. All lines of communication and transportation are failing....somewhere among new and familiar faces, a psychopath is hiding and seeking out his prey.

Forecast of Evil had a few more thrills and a nice romance subplot than a typical mystery read. Readers will enjoy the information about orienteering, gaining a little knowledge of this hobby without resorting to a bulky dry book on the subject. The author gives a strong hint as to the identity of the perpetrator at one moment, on purpose I believe, because it actually heightened the thrills and the hunt --- even so, there were definitely some unexpected twists as well. Very nice!

One word of advice...this may not be the book to start in the wee hours of the night. Reading it with a book light increases the chilling effect for this reader. Of course, if you want to heighten the chilling effect of this book, read it with a book light or beside a fireplace in a darkened room.

5-0 out of 5 stars Move over Mary Higgins Clark!
Move over Mary Higgins Clark, Laura Bradford is on the scene! In Forecast of Evil, she even tops her previous book, Jury of One, which was nominated for an Agatha best first novel. A tough heroine and her love interest match wits with a devious murderer while battling a blizzard and some demons from the past to succeed in the end. A story with turns and twists on every page. Product Description
Do you think it's possible to be marked by fate? To be destined to die a victim? Or can fate be helped along? Twisted to suit another person's needs. The black metal cave was cool against my tears, the carpeted floor a buffer for the tremors in my body. I bit down harder on my lower lip, the pain a constant reminder of my need to stay quiet.to fight the urge to scream for help. Thirty-five years ago, seven-year-old Hannah Daltry hid under a desk-alone and terrified. She didn't cry. She didn't yell. She didn't move. If she had, they would have found her. Today she's a grown woman, teaching in a community college, sharing her passion for the written word with her students. But she hasn't forgotten those terrifying moments from her childhood. In fact, she's decided to use that memory as a teaching exercise in her creative writing class. In that same class is Elise Jenkins, a local reporter who's eager to stretch her writing wings. She-like all the other students-is inspired by the teacher's ability to bring a scene to life on paper. To put readers under that desk, to instill the same fear she'd once felt. But inspiration turns to shock when Ms. Daltry is found dead in her classroom. Her only mistake? Being in the wrong place at the wrong time.Again.Is her murder simply a cruel twist of irony? A fate she was destined to meet? Or is there more to the story? That's what Elise intends to find out. No matter what the cost. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Mystery!!
Ms Bradford once again brought the characters of Jenkins and Burns to life in another thriller of murder and suspense! It is a MUST READ after her 1st 2 in the series:"Jury of One" and "Forecast of Evil".

5-0 out of 5 stars Kept me guessing until the end!
I enjoyed Marked by Fate because it developed the relationships between the characters while moving the story forward.I was hooked by the idea of the writer taking a creative writing class, a point that said to me that everyone can learn something new.I really loved the interplay between Elise and Mitch. And kuto's to secondary character, Dean, who came alive as the snack stealing photographer. Looking forward to Laura Bradford's next book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Somebody stop this woman!
Somebody should stop this woman--preferably her creative writing teacher.Laura Bradford needs to keep practicing her skills as a writer before she publishes again: she needs to work on dialogue skills (a fiance whose love talk consists of "Awwwwww Babe"?), and character development (how can you create a novel where only the villain has a memorable characteristic--that being that he can hold onto a burning match until his arm catches fire?) Bradford could think about plausible plots, too: this novel is based on the story a young child who hides under a desk during a bank robbery, and 35 years later discovers the robber's identity when she sees a scar on his wrist. The robber, now a killer, is discovered when Elise the reporter notices the scar, puts two and six together, lays her finger aside of her nose, and says, "Aha!" Amazing detective skills for a journalist with no discernible personality....

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is simply the sort of book you pick up and can't put down until you've finished the last page. I've loved all of Ms. Bradford's work and can't wait to get my hands on her next!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book to Curl up With
For true fans of the mystery genre, I'd like to encourage you to read the third Jenkins & Burns Mysteries by Laura Bradford. As usual, Ms. Bradford sucks her readers into the story through her careful descriptions and her insightful characterizations.

On this trip into the lives of reporter Elise Jenkins and detective Mitch Burns, the reader is thrust into the day-to-day events any of us could encounter, until murder intrudes. And wouldn't you know it, the body turns out to be Elise's teacher.Once again, Ms. Bradford takes the reader on a ride through numerous suspects--twisting and turning until you're not sure who you can trust. Was the killer a man bent on revenge?A shy girl looking for validation? The remnants of a crime thirty-five years old?You can't be sure until all the pieces of the puzzle are laid out.(Lord knows, I'll never tell.)

If you're looking for a straight, honest-to-goodness mystery (in the same vein as a modern-day Christie or a toned-down Paretsky) this book is definitely the way to go.A wonderful book to curl up with, but unless you plan on staying up to read it all, not too close to bedtime.
