Excellent condition
I received the book within 2 days of placing the order.The book was in excellent -- nearly "uncirculated" -- condition.

Believable characters, good historical and legal drama
Having grown up in a small southern Indiana town near the Illinois border, the book evoked strong images of scenes and people I knew in my childhood.The authors managed to avoid the usual stereotypes and gave us a surprise ending, proving their skill at creating characters who seemed like real human beings.Boyd reminded me of some clients I've known who were their own worst enemies, yet a strong sense of justice guided the proceedings despite his character flaws.I also enjoyed the development of the story lines involving WWI and stock market crash from the seldom-seen perspective of middle America.

A good, solid read
I won't go into the storyline - you can read about that above. Just one thing: Don't listen to the critics. This is truely a good book.
I'm very glad I bought it and I'm also sure I'll enjoy a second read. If you like thrillers, adventure stories with solid characters, I suggest you read both the authors' books. All the talk about too many cliches, wobbling storyline - foget about it. Just read it. You won't be disappointed. Promised.

A satisfying read, good and realistic courtroom drama.
I found "Justice for None" to be a very enjoyable read.It crackles with realism--the reader is transported back to the bad old days of the late 1920s, when prosperity was for the few, and hard work and hard luck was the lot of most Americans.

Against the backdrop of the looming and imminent Great Depression this story takes place.The protagonist is a World War One hero, who is also a hard-luck case.Rather than being rewarded and recognized for his heroism in Europe, he is scarred by his wartime suffering, and his marriage does not survive the strain.When someone murders his estranged wife, he is the suspect, and then a fugitive.

The eventual courtroom scenario, as it plays out in the novel, is the story's climax and also involves the best writing in the novel.Further, it seemed to me (I am a trial attorney) that the authors did an exceptionally good job of showing the reason for some of our procedural safeguards in court that protect defendants.The absence of these safeguards in this 1929 trial work to the very great, and unfair, disadvantage of the protagonist.I thought that the authors did an exceptional job of bringing this out, and the trial has a gritty feel of realism, right down to the incident (no real spoiler here) in which the defense attorney realizes that his client has not beenentirely truthful or candid with him.There, as in real life, this is a potentially fatal mistake.

The ending surprised me a bit, and the authors do a good job of tying up the loose ends in the story, making for a startling conclusion to a satisfying read.

The atmosphere the authors created swept me back in time to the places and experiences of my youth in Illinois.Justice for None vividly and accurately describes post-World War I Mid-America and combines it with suspense to make a powerful novel.I was totally absorbed by this book and enjoyed it thoroughly. ... Death and more death
This novel of the civil war is hard to put down, but in the end it left me feeling empty.There's a whole lot of blood and hate and not much redemption here.

Gene Hackman Escape From Andersonville
I've always like Gene Hackman since I saw him in I Never Sang for My Father back in 1970 or 1971.Over the years, his acting has been entertaining.Although I've never read any of his written works, if his writing his anything like his acting, readers are in for a real treat.

Amateur Hour at Andersonville
Everyone once in a while, I read a mass-market piece of fiction, just to remind myself about the difference between those works and quality fiction. "Escape from Andersonville" falls comfortably into the mass-market category.In short, it's terrible.

I've read a lot about the Civil War, and this book seems to be accurate. But its accuracy and its opening two sentences are the only good things that can be said about it. By sentence #3, it's a steep downhill slide.

I'm not sure where to start in my criticism. It could be ridiculous leaps from the vernacular ("sniffing through your taster") to attempts at literature ("befogged logic" and "tenacious light of a summer's day") within the same paragraph. It could be the preposterous courage and good luck of the main character, Nathan Parker, or the decisions by his soon-to-be-trusty sidekick, Marcel LaFarge.It could be absolutely wooden women -- especially the southern farm woman who glares at Parker but then presents herself to him for sex three times in a single evening, while telling him he can't whisper a word.It could be any of a dozen other flaws.

Obviously, this book wouldn't see the light of day without the tie-in to actor Gene Hackman. And I guess it's not surprising that an actor would collaborate on such an amateurish book. Being a novelist is a vanity project for him. But don't let Hackman's fancy become your burden.

Not Worth the Time or Energy
I agree with the other reviews which gave this title 1 star - it is terrible.I bought the book thinking it would provide a lot of historical data about POWs during the Civil War.Well, there is some information, however it is very limited and incorrect.

The facet of this book which was a real turn off for me is the extremely poor writing in itself.There is repetition of information and scenes, poorly developed characters, run-on sentences, poor grammar and a plot that is less than exciting and uninteresting overall.I quit reading less than 'half-way through and then sold the book (feeling guilty as I shipped it off to a new reader - perhaps someone will enjoy the book).

Perhaps this book is good bubble gum for the mind, but why bother with this book when there is better junk than this junk to read out there!

A very interesting book
"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation," wrote Henry David Thoreau, and one such man is Captain Nathan Parker, Captain of the Fifth Michigan, dubbed "Parker's Rangers." And just when he thought that the insanity of war could not get any worse, he and his men are captured and sent to the dreaded Confederate prison camp at Andersonville, Georgia. Now, Captain Parker's situation becomes truly desperate - he must escape from Andersonville, and free his men. He finds himself making alliances with men whom he never would have considered before, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and these are indeed terribly desperate times!

Overall, I found this to be a very interesting book. Just when you think that it is over, or at least should be, the book actually picks up speed, with the action and suspense reaching higher and higher. Plus, I must say that I liked the development of the characters, particularly Marcel Lafarge, a man of infinite complexity and searing pain.

Yep, I really liked this book; it kept me interested all the way to the end. Now, is this book 100% historically accurate? I can't say, but I do agree that you should realize that this is fiction, rather than pure history. And, as far as fiction goes, it's great. Aye, a fine tale, it is!
From beginning to end this was fun, easy read full of excitement!One of the most satisfying books I've read in a long time.

I loved it
After reading some other reviews,i almost didn't read the book. i'm glad i did! Don't listen to the literary snobs who find fault with every book;if you like a good story, this one has everything. Adventure, conflict, danger, complex human emotions, friendship and teamwork. i like a story that keeps me wondering what will happen next! i found this one thoroughly satisfying,and it could be a great movie.

Action Packed
This book has more action in a single chapter than most authors can put in a trilogy! The best sea saga I've ever read!

Not a bad first effort
Reminiscent of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin andJulian Stockwin's Kydd/Renzi in the pairing of the intellectual LeMaire with the man of action O'Reilly, it is also set in the same period, albeit American- rather than European-based.
We follow half-caste Jack's progression from mild-mannered teenager to ruthless pirate on a mission to eradicate slavers and avenge his parent's death and dishonour.
In a mixture of 'Swiss family Robinson' and 'Captain Blood', the Perdido Star, captained by a crazed drunkard, is wrecked on a desert island, having made heavy weather of rounding the Horn. Neighbouring islanders, salvaged materials and the ingenuity of the survivors combine to provide a comfortable semblance of home, which is rudely shattered by the appearance of a Dutch VOC ship collecting human 'cargo'. Jack is persuaded by circumstances and his friend Paul that the only way to right the wrongs of the world is to take action - and there is action aplenty in this gripping, although slightly pulpy, first novel from Hackman & Lenihan.
Well-drawn characters and an intriguing plot combine to make a story to rival the best in the genre.

I wonder who the professional literary critics were who gave this book such high marks.I agree with whomever wrote the review "The Lightning Never Strikes."I am a former reviewer for INDEPENDENT PUBLISHER MAGAZINE and was given the go-ahead to review Mr. Gene Hackman's first novel.Since I am also a writer who writes nonfiction books about piracy, I was definitely enthusiastic about this swashbuckling novel!But unfortunately I struggled through quicksand to the middle of the book, then called my editor and pleaded with him not to make me finish it and write a review.Since this was right after the book's publishing date, I don't remember the specific superficial scenes I slogged through.I just remember the book was filled with cardboard characters, dumb dialogue, many erroneous facts, and a stupid plot.I don't recommend that anyone waste their time with this novel.Instead, read a novel such as THE DIARY OF A SLAVE GIRL, RUBY JO that includes pirate photos and illustrations as well as nonfiction information about pirates that seems accurate. ... fun book!
The book is fun and breezy.

top 100 greatest sports movies
This book was a great compendium of the best sports movies. My husband and I agree with many of the choices and this book has also made us aware of several movies which we have not seen, but are now eager to watch based on the recomendations made.

Good Idea but Written by the Wrong People
The idea of putting together a book on the top 100 sports movies is a good one--but in this case it's written by a couple guys who spout opinions instead of offering much in the way of objective details.One is from NFL films and the other is a sports radio host.Though both claim to have sportswriting background, they didn't put in the work to write a detailed, fact-filled book in the subject.

Each film gets a couple pages which includes a plot summary and then some tidbits like "best line," "goof" and "reality check."It reads more like a Wikipedia entry than a book that has been well researched.They include a few opinions from athletes, but mostly it is their own spouting about what they think are good and bad films.

A number of facts are wrong.They admit in the opening that they don't include boxoffice results as a measure of a film's success.And they also "did not include the three highest-grossing sports movies of all time," which they list as The Waterboy,The Longest Yard remake and Talladega Nights, since they are "frat boy comedies."Huh?They don't put them in a book just because of the style of sports film?They also err because the animated film Cars (which they do include in a list of children's sports films) actually beat all the others at the boxoffice.

Some of their choices are so strange that in the end the reader concludes that there aren't 100 great sports films--there may be about 40 or 50 of them.They include a number of movies that most have never heard of and their rankings are so arbitrary that beyond the top 15 the order doesn't make much sense.

Bingo Long at number 39 yet they only rank Rudy #57? Silly fluff like The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh is included at #100? Then widely-loved films like White Men Can't Jump is only #66, beat by movies you have never heard of like Sugar (which is about Dominican Republic baseball players--and one of the authors admits that he used to live there covering baseball.Hmmm--wonder why it's on this list?). Who can take them seriously after seeing that?

They also appear very biased toward boxing movies (including a number of obscure ones) and have way too many recent movies on the list that are hardly instant classics. And they include movies that aren't really true "sports" films, such as The Hustler and Rounders. Meanwhile they slam a number of true sports films on their list as not being realistic enough--so why rank them on a top 100 list if the authors are going to demean them?

This would have worked better if written by a Sports Illustrated researcher who did the work involved to dig up great details and then present them in a more objective way.As it is, it's nice to skim through but doesn't provide much new insight into any of the films.

Very highly recommended for any sports or movie general-interest library

That alone could represent an ambitious individual's life work... but these sports loving authors... representing the underappreciated legions of men (and women) who not only want to rave... and rage... about the top one-hundred... but we also want to throw in a few piercing comments about which movies stink! But hold on! If you're like me... if this truly is our *DREAM-BOOK*... then it should be a printed version of what I/you want to represent the way we actually act in front of our TV... or in a movie theatre... or in a bar... in a "friendly" discussion/argument... with friends and foes alike. So if that's the case... how about:

*A LIST OF TEN ACTORS WHO ARE A DISGRACE TO ATHLETES AND SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO PLAY ONE*

*A LIST OF TEN ACTORS WHO PASS THE GRADE AS ATHLETES*

*HOW ABOUT THE BEST LINE IN EACH OF THE ONE-HUNDRED MOVIES?* An example in my favorite baseball movie of all-time "FIELD-OF-DREAMS" (Note: the author's admit it would be too easy to list, "IF YOU BUILD IT, HE WILL COME." Or, "HEY, IS THIS HEAVEN?" "NO, THIS IS IOWA." So they go right to the awe-inspiring poetry: "THE ONE CONSTANT THROUGH ALL THE YEARS, RAY, HAS BEEN BASEBALL. AMERICA HAS ROLLED BY LIKE AN ARMY OF STEAMROLLERS. IT HAS BEEN ERASED LIKE A BLACKBOARD, REBUILT AND ERASED AGAIN. BUT BASEBALL HAS MARKED THE TIME. THIS FIELD, THIS GAME-IT'S A PART OF OUR PAST, RAY. IT REMINDS US OF ALL THAT ONCE WAS GOOD AND IT COULD BE AGAIN. OH, PEOPLE WILL COME RAY. PEOPLE WILL MOST DEFINITELY COME."

Wow! There are many, many, places that the author's readily admit a box of Kleenex is required to watch certain movies. But if this is truly my/our dream book there should be more. How about:

*Reality Check* - where the director blew it in many of these classic movies such as when Shoeless Joe Jackson bats right and throws left. In real life Jackson threw right and batted left. (Just the type of things I/you yell at the screen all the time.)

*Lists of Sports Flicks For Kids*
*Great Sports Scenes In Non-Sports Movies*
*All-Time Movie Baseball Team*
*All-Time Movie Football Team*

Perhaps one of the most thought provoking features in the book is the *PIVOTAL-SCENE* section in each movie such as the one in *HE-GOT-GAME*: "AS THE TRASH TALK GROWS NASTIER, JAKE LOSES HIS EDGE-AND HIS ENERGY. JESUS IS BIGGER, FASTER AND, ULTIMATELY, MENTALLY STRONGER. THE ICIER JESUS GETS, THE MORE HE DOMINATES. IN FACT, HE IS USING THE LESSONS WE SAW JAKE TEACH HIM YEARS AGO. EVEN AS HE SLAYS HIS FATHER, HE IS VALIDATING HIM.

There are many other lists and endless bits of delicious sports and movie minutiae that are akin to precious jewels. This is not only a great read... but it will become a valuable reference book for years to come. It even recommends how "re-watchable" the flick is and ends each movie section with a famous personality telling you why that particular movie is his all-time favorite.

I highly recommend you buy this book because it has so much value on so many different levels.

I love this man!
This was a good book. Case closed. Hackman was great in BONNIE AND CLYDE! I love that movie.

Errors are rife
In just picking up the book I found one typo on the first page I turned to, and when I looked at the pages on "Get Shorty," Dennis Farina's name was spelled incorrectly (this was not a typo, even the index had it wrong). Any idiot who knows anything about character actors would know how to spell his name, or at least have an accurate cast list. The book doesn't do a good job dealing with the films. The author writes a few anecdotes, then simply reports how it was reviewed. Hackman deserves better ... Read more

Excerpt: Richard Wayne "Dick" Van Dyke (born December 13, 1925) is an American actor, comedian, writer, and producer with a career spanning six decades. He is arguably best known for his starring roles in the films Bye Bye Birdie, Mary Poppins, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and the television series The Dick Van Dyke Show and Diagnosis Murder. Dick Van Dyke's start in television was with WDSU-TV New Orleans Channel 6 (NBC), first as a single comedian and later as emcee of a comedy program. Van Dyke's first network TV appearance was on The Phil Silvers Show in the 19571958 season. Van Dyke starred in the situation comedy The Dick Van Dyke Show from 1961 to 1966 in which he portrayed a comedy writer named Rob Petrie. Complementing Van Dyke was a veteran cast of comedic actors including Rose Marie, Morey Amsterdam, Jerry Paris, Carl Reiner (as Alan Brady), as well as television newcomer Mary Tyler Moore, who played Rob's wife Laura Petrie. He won three Emmy Awards as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and the series received four Emmy Awards as Outstanding Comedy Series. From 1971 to 1974, Van Dyke starred in an unrelated sitcom called The New Dick Van Dyke Show in which he starred as a local television talk show host.
