Sir Henry Irving (February 6, 1838 – October 13, 1905), was an English stage actor in the Victorian era. He was the first actor to be awarded a knighthood. Both on and off the stage, Irving always maintained a high ideal of his profession, besides the honour ofa knighthood, hewas also the recipient of honorary degrees from the universities of Dublin, Cambridge, and Glasgow. Reuniendo a su alrededor a un soberbio equipo de cineastas (Robert Stevenson, Penrose Tennyson, Charles Crichton, Henry Cornelius, Alexander Mackendrick, entre otros) y actores de fama internacional o que él mismo "descubrió" (Jack Hawkins, James Mason, Michael Redgrave, John Mills, Dick Bogarde y, por supuesto, Alec Guinness), Balcon creó en estos estudios un cierto tipo de película típicamente británica en la que se alternaban psicología, humor, realismo y un discreto nacionalismo. En la Ealing se abordaron todos los géneros -en diecisiete años se rodaron cerca de un centenar de producciones: bélicas, policiacas, de aventuras-, pero son sin duda sus sofisticadas e irreverentes comedias ('Whisky Galore', 'Passport to Pimplico', 'Ocho sentencias de muerte', 'El quinteto de la muerte') las que más se recuerdan hoy día, las famosas 'comedias Ealing'. En 1955, los estudios fueron adquiridos por la BBC, pero su espíritu aún pervive entre los amantes del cine.
