Interesting two-story Medieval anthology...
I have become quite enthralled with Medieval novels and I wanted to get my hands on a romantica set during those times.Conquered is a two-novella anthology published by New Concepts Publishing that were quite fascinating and well written.The novellas, written by Goldie McBride, are set during the takeover of William the Conqueror, during the 1060s.In Conquest of the White Rose, the Normans take over Rasgarth and kill the father and brothers of a noble Saxon family.Lady Elspeth is raped and tortured by Renard, someone who wreaks unnecessary havoc and kills without having to do so.It is with Norman Lord Arnaud's arrival that things get settled and some truce is made.The moment Lord Arnaud meets Lady Elspeth, he cannot get her out of his mind, but he is an honorable and chivalrous knight who has to stay true to his wife, who is expecting his heir, no matter how difficult she may be and that their marriage had been arranged.In Wulfgar, a Saxon wants to avenge the murder of his woman, and he will do so at any cost, and that includes stealing the Norman's wife and taking liberties with her.

The two novellas are interesting.The time of William the Conqueror was quite a barbaric time and the violence in the stories are keeping with the time frame, no matter how awful it may seem.These two novellas, especially Conquest of the White Rose, remind me a great deal of a novel called The Wolf and the Dove by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss.The stories are fine here, except that they lack some characterization.They were told mostly from the heroines' point of view, especially the first novella.The sex scenes aren't that very hot.I was expecting something along the lines of Beguiled by Julia Keaton.However, this one isn't so erotic.The scenes are fine, just not very palpable.I would have liked for Lord Arnaud to have more depth in Conquest of the White Rose, my favorite of the two.Some of his lines were great and I would have loved to know more about the workings of his mind.All in all, this is a middling effort.I give kudos for the somewhat accurate events that took place during that time setting.I also give props for the romance -- a love story between two sworn enemies is always very romantic.But I would have liked more characterization.Perhaps we would have had some if the author had more word count to work on.I nevertheless recommend this as an interesting, sensual read.

Spicy or Not?
"Conquered" by Goldie Mcbride contains 2 novellas set in the days of the Norman conquest of England.I found the stories interesting, if rather typical of the historical romantic genre, with strong characters (both leading and supporting).The sex scenes are not particularly erotic but fit well with the action of the plot.And yes, there is a well laid out plot, not just sex.I liked Ms. Mcbrides style of writing and will look forward to reading more of her books in the future. ... brilliant survey
A series of essays on the major thinkers and their periods, this book, and really all the Cambridge polisci history volumes, is an excellent survey of this fundamentally important period in the development of theories of the state, which is still a vitally important issue for our world today, whether you think about the rise of stateless terrorism, economic imperialism, development issues, the rise of continental blocs a la NAFTA or the EU, law and jurisprudence, etc etc etc.

This book is NOT a generalist survey, it assumes that you have some knowledge of the period and the thinkers.But if you do, and you would like to understand the subject without having to take 5 years of your life to pursue a PhD in the area, this book is one that you must have.Excellent bibliography herein also. If you are interested in Bodin, Machiavelli, Hobbes, etc, then you must read this book. Or maybe you would do better with the exterior discipline of Cal's PhD in polisci.But if you might be an autodidact, then you can buy this book and read it for fun and edification without having to commit yourself to a phd program. Clear summary of modern portfolio theory
This is a very readable summary of modern portfolio theory with an emphasis on asset class diversification.The authors are skeptical about the value of "active" fund managers, and present arguments/evidence similar to those of Burton Malkiel and Larry Swedroe.However the book is more succinct than either Malkiel's or Swedroe's works. A quick read, clearly written. Originally published in the late 1990s, most of its views have held up very well over time.The authors are financial advisors and promote their services in the last chapter.

I was looking for such a book
This book is about Modern Portfolio Theory, but is written for the investor not for the academic.The style is simple and serious, touching every point that should be made.I have resd other books on this topic, and all of them have terrible titles. That is not important.They also consider different degrees of detail, also not important.This one confirms my own common sense.It does not belabor simple points (a la Bogle) but states them clearly with footnotes giving proper credit.I teach a class in "Saving and Investing."Would that I could summarize as well as Bowen and Goldie do. The coverage of foreign and golobal stocks is brief and good.The opinions on bonds are sensible.Believe it or not, these are often neglected topics or are lost in the clutter.I wish the authors would come out with a third edition! ...
