5-0 out of 5 stars Great "episode" in a small book
This little book is an exact reproduction of a chapter 5 in the original book, Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne, with the original illustrations by Shephard enhanced by judicious watercoloring. All the charm of the original, in a perfect size for reading to littler kids, who can feel satisfied at having been read "the whole story." Also good for children just starting to read all by themselves.

Beautifully bound and illustrated, this little book is part of a series of 10 such Pooh books published by Dutton. Don't confuse these "storybooks" with the even smaller and abridged board-books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Say "Ho" for the wonderful Pooh!
This amazing dramatization of the Pooh books is performed by a marvelously talented group of British entertainers who truly bring the Pooh characters gently and lovingly to life. As for this tape, I finally got this figured out. This is part of a four-tape program that represents the complete two-book Winnie-the-Pooh story collection, except the stories are out of order (probably so that they would fit equally on the tapes). Book 1, "Winnie-the-Pooh," is represented by "Pooh Goes Visiting" (stories in order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10) and "Piglet Meets a Heffalump" (stories: 5, 6, 7, 8). Book 2, "The House at Pooh Corner," is dramatized by "Tigger Comes to the Forest" (stories in order: 1 2, 4, 3, 9, 10) and "Pooh Invents a New Game" (stories 5, 6, 7, 8). When stories that depend on previous information are out of order, it gets confusing. My suggestion: Get the "Winnnie-the-Pooh" / "The House at Pooh Corner" gift pack, which is also four tapes (the same recordings), but in the proper order.

5-0 out of 5 stars The finest Pooh audiotapes ever recorded!
[This is a review of the Hodder/Headline audiocassette version] I learned to read by listening (again and again and again and again) to a pair of well-loved and well-worn LPs of the Pooh stories read by Maurice Evans. I always considered them the finest Pooh audiobooks ever recorded. Up until now! Now there's this wonderful series of fully-dramatized adventures ofPooh featuring a brilliant cast of wonderful British actors: Stephen Fry("Jeeves and Wooster") as Pooh, Geoffrey Palmer ("TheMadness of King George") as Eeyore, Judy Dench ("Shakespeare inLove") as Kanga...and best of all, the *incomparable* Jane Horrocks("Little Voice" and Bubbles from "AbFab") as a squeaky, alarmed, and altogether adorable Piglet. You don't have to be a kid toappreciate these fine recordings (and there are plenty of adult Pooh fansout there who will *love* these versions). Accept no substitutes: this issimply the finest Pooh audio series yet created...... There's morethan just this one tape in the series, too. The series includes"Tigger Comes to the Forest" (ISBN: 1840322195); "PigletMeets a Heffalump" (ISBN: 1840320524) and "Pooh Invents a NewGame" (ISBN: 1840322268). Type the 10-digit ISBN number into theAmazon search field to go directly to the webpages for these cassettes.

Product Description
Mr. Jowett has taken his experiences, as a psychic and a medium, and has recalled many incidences where he has spoken to living parents and received messages from their children who have passed from this mortal life into the eternal spiritual realm. The Seven Chapters’ aim is to help begin and sustain the healing process of parents who are still tremendously grieving – or who may, in time, still be moderately grieving – the loss of their son or daughter. The manuscript’s main thrust is to help parents give themselves the permission to move on with their lives, and to leave, at their children’s gravesides, the immense burdens of shame, blame, grief and self-condemnation.Some of the best advice, and comfort, comes “…from the mouths of babes” and readers will find a great deal of common sense, as well as uncommon humor and insight, from Little Persons who have left this life, for the after life, those children whom Jowett refers to as Children of Spirit, or Your Spirit Child. For those parents who seek answers, compassionate or comfort these words of hope and exaltation will lift the failing heart and let it laugh and live again! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Help For Those Without Hope
This is a wonderful book of hope and inspiration for everyone who has suffered the loss of someone they love. Geof, with his simple and direct style, reaffirms that there is no death--only change. When we are paralyzed by grief, this is a powerful catalyst to help us begin to live again and move forward: A life changing book by a gifted man.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional book for those who have suffered a loss.
Geof Jowett's book is an exceptional one for those who have suffered the loss of a child. As a teen, I lost two siblings in a very short period of time, and saw my parents really struggle with what was happening to our family.I only wish that Geof's book had been available to them then.Even all these years later, I found peace through reading the stories.Geof is gifted and caring, and everything that he is comes through in this well written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for Parents Who Have Lost Children:
Geof Jowett is an incredible author. He brings hope to those who have lost someone they loved.Geof has a beautiful gift for connecting with the other side and bringing messages to us.This book is a presentation of what Geof has learned from children who crossed over. These messages touch your heart and soul as you become open to these possibilities. Geof's professional background in science and higher education add to his credibility. This book will help in the healing journey back from grief and loss.Hope for Parents Who Have Lost Children: A Medium's Communication with Children in Heaven

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for healing...
I purchased this book for myself after learning about the author, Geof Jowett. He is an amazing man who has a gift for understanding the deep pain we felt when losing our daughter at birth. It was so helpful to me that I purchased several more copies for friends of mine who experienced similar losses. In a time when there are many books on this topic, I found this one to be the best one I have found so far.I highly recommend this book for any parent who has lost a child for any reason at any time.I don't ever write reviews but this was such a powerful book that really brought me comfort and peace surrounding all of the negativity and pain that came with losing our daugther.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope and Comfort
This book can give a lot of comfort and hope to anyone who's grieving the passing of a loved one. Geoff puts everything in perspective, and uses his vast knowledge of Biology to explain the subject of death from a scientific standpoint that is very unique and mind-opening.

The stories in this book are very touching, and brings comfort to those who are mourning. The loss of a child is probably the hardest loss anyone could ever experience, so I highly recommend this book to parents who are going through this type of suffering. Even if you haven't lost a child, anyone who has lost someone could relate to message of hope in this book.

Much peace,

5-0 out of 5 stars great ending to agreat series
Finally, the HHGG radio series is complete. This story needs THIS cast and THIS medium to truly come to life (the movie can't hold a candle to this production). The ending is more upbeat than the book, but is just the kind of finale the show needs after 30 years in the making.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Long... and Thanks!
Well, that about wraps it up for...
Arthur Dent
Ford Prefect and
Trillian
...not to mention the galaxy of other characters who have appeared - even if only for a line or two - on the BBC radio series that has built a global and intensely loyal following for the past 28 years.
"There's nothing penultimate about this one: this - ladies and gentlemen - is the proverbial it."

Finally, there is closure.A conclusion that this listener has longed for ever since the original THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY invaded my awareness in 1981.

And what a conclusion! At the risk of spoiling it for other Hitchhiker wannabe's, BBC4 and Dirk Maggs have managed to remain faithful to Douglas Adams' final installment to the inaccurately numbered trilogy of books, spawned from the original radio series and then respawning into new radio shows.Go to their web for some priceless photos and other cool stuff: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhikers/newseries.shtml

And yet, there's more. The book was as dark as the space encompassing the outer eastern rim of the galaxy, and closed on a note that I'd swear was written by Marvin, the paranoid android. A series that the Beeb billed as "light entertainment" can't leave its audience that depressed and morose, now can it?

As I listened to the last episode of the fifth series, I awaited the darkness of the book's conclusion. When I read the book, MOSTLY HARMLESS, on which this radio series was based, I wondered if Adams was so annoyed with the insatiable appetite of readers and listeners that he decided to dispense with his much beloved characters once and for all.Was this the final disposition of the everyman hero, Arthur Dent, his hedonistic traveling companion and Guide field researcher Ford Prefect, and the only other survivor of the Earth's demolition, Trillian? As I wondered and listened, I achingly mourned Adams' passing.I'll miss forever his command of the English language - weaving similes and other literary devices into a tapesty that delights the listener/reader as much on the 10th or even 100th time as much as it does on the first.Sure, those words would will last for a long, long time. But there would be nothing new from that well that watered and nourished so many of us over the years.

On a somewhat related tangent, I responded to a query on the IMDB web page for Farhenheit 451 as to what book you would memorize for posterity's sake if that book/movie's scenario came true.No question: the original HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY or any of its sequels.

Back to this CD collection: The producer, director, script-writers, performers and other talented members of the ensemble succeed admirably in this final reunion, ushering radio story-telling well into the 21st Century.Sure, the voices had aged. Some had passed and are dearly missed: Peter Jones as the Book and Richard Vernon as the definitive Slartybartfast. But to hear the final reunion was absolutely golden.

Years ago, when I began my career as a road warrior, I used to tune into CBS Radio's nighttime mystery series on a 50,000 Watt AM radio station.(Hey, this was pre-CDs, way pre- XM or Sirius). There's something about driving down a rural two-lane road in the dark that made those tales that much more spine-tingley.

In like manner, listening to any of the CDs of the BBC Radio4's productions of Adams' work makes the miles fly by so much more easily.Books on tape/CD pale in comparison, in much the same way that a black hole is outshone by a supernova or even a red giant. The sound effects and incidental music add such a rich and complex dimension to the story-telling that is so sadly lacking with all the audio books on the market these days.OK, Ok, the flatulence noice is a bit puerile, but it works so well in the scene.

Douglas Adams is a true artiste whose talents will be appreciated for years to come.

So long... and thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars So Long, Hitchhiker's Guide, and Thanks for All the Fun
This is the superb final BBC radio series of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, this one adapting Douglas Adams' final book Mostly Harmless. It features the same creators and cast from the recent Tertiary and Quandary Phases (which means that most of the original cast from the 1978 to 1980 radio shows appear.)

While the book itself was a major disappointment, the radio adaption manages to be funny, interesting, thought-provoking and very satisfying. The writers have focused the story, created new scenes, included characters which Adams had apparently forgotten about over the course of the "trilogy," brilliantly converted the novel's rambling prose into dialogue and guide entries, stayed true to Adams' original intentions while simultaneously improving them considerably, and have created a new epilogue for the story which takes us beyond what Adams ever wrote and ties up the entire saga in a way so clever and sweet as to make a grown man cry.Such a brilliant adaption stands in stark contrast with the abysmal, dumbed-down script which was used for the recent film.THIS is the way to adapt a Hitchhiker's book.

Since the book concerns a parallel Earth and features two versions of the character Trillian (each from a different continuity in improbability,) it's of particular fan interest that the two Trillians are played by Susan Sheridan, the original radio actress, and Sandra Dickinson, who created the role for BBC television. As in the Tertiary Phase, Douglas Adams himself appears as Agrajag.I won't spoil the surprise of who else shows up.

As with all the previous radio entries, it's odd, brilliant, confusing and dense enough to warrant an immediate second listening, and has enough depth to offer new discoveries several listenings later.I couldn't be happier with how it all came out.Which leads me to wonder...

Why does this have to be the last one?If the producers don't wish to invent their own H2G2 episodes, I hope they turn their attentions to Dirk Gently, Douglas Adams' other comedic book series.A creative unit as successful as this shouldn't stop now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Considered "Essential Reading" for Study of Classical Mythology
I shopped for this book on Amazon because it is included in the "Essential Reading" part of the bibliography for "Classical Mythology", one of the Teaching Company's courses. The lecturer, Professor Elizabeth Vandiver, U. of Maryland, describes the work as follows: "A clear, concise introduction for the general reader.Contains chapters on definitions of myth, approaches to myth, the appearances of Greek myths in literature, and the nature of Greek heroes. An excellent place to begin any study of classical myth or of theories about myth in general."Professor Vandiver's course, by the way, is excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars G.S. Kirk provides analysis, not fun
As a doctoral student, I would not recommend anything written by Kirk to anybody but an academic. What Kirk does is to deconstruct, in the technical sense, theories of myth in the agora that is the Greek pantheon, explaining how no theory can completely map upon the confusing state of Greek religious thought and text.It is not perfect but nevertheless sufficient. The reader would do himself well to reread Derrida prior to attempting Kirk's formulation of Greek myth.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the other hand . . .
Although I've not read this book, after reading the vituperative attackabove I feel I must mention that no less a critic than classics scholarBernard Knox (himself as enjoyable to read as he is informative) hascompared Kirk's book to Dodds' "epic-making" _Greeks and theIrrational_, saying of Kirk's work in myth that it "presents the samestimulating combination of professional expertise and newperspectives."Coming from Knox, this is high praise indeed.

Ifyou're looking for a quick "who did what to whom," you'd best gowith Edith Hamilton. But if you want an insightful and informed adultjourney into the character and substance of myth, perhaps this is the bookyou seek.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you want to have fun, don'tread this book.
I found this book highly unenjoyable. It was written well, if you aretaking a doctorate level course, otherwise good luck. If you expect tolearn what a Greek Myth is, Kirk will confuse the hell out of you!!! Hedoes an excellent job of never giving his own opinions, but would ratherbelittle the thoughts of previous authors on the nature and beliefs ofGreek Myths. Sorry Kirk, but I would have to give you two thumbs down forease of reading, comprehension, and explanations on the Greek Myths. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When Great Actors Return to Childhood
The great Judi Dench would make this a wonderful CD for me, even if there were only she reading. However, she is not alone here. The cast is extremely well-chosen, and the music, though spare, is wonderful as well. Our toddler, I am convinced, really listens to the piano as Pooh sings his little tiddly-poms.

Overall, when listening to this CD, I have the feeling of being at a performance that has tried as much as possible to create the spatiality of a child's imagination. There is an openness created through the spare music, through the slower pace, and the oh-so-British understatement of Stephen Fry as Pooh.

Did I mention that Judi Dench performs Kanga on these CDs with an Australian accent? How bloody appropriate!

Parents will love their memories of Jeeves and Wooster and As Time Goes By that come flooding back when Dench, Palmer, and Fry work their magic.

My only criticism is that Christopher Robin is a bit, shall we say, overacted. But then again he is a child, and children, or ours at least, like him very much.

For those who would want their children to grow up with taste, style, intelligence, and wit--this is a CD that ought not to be missed.

4-0 out of 5 stars The flavor of the original; edited for little ones
When I went to introduce my preschooler to Winnie-the-Pooh, I bought the big book with the complete stories and poems. It didn't take long for me to figure out that it wasn't quite right for my 3-year-old. Reading a story out of the original works takes a good 15-20 minutes, which is more than one can really expect from a preschooler or toddler. Also, the original Pooh is a bit like Sesame Street, in that there are phrases and indeed entire sections of the stories that adults will find amusing but which will just go over a child's head.

And yet, I didn't want to break down and go the route of the Disney-fied Pooh books, with their cartoonish illustrations and watered-down plots and characters.

That's why I was so pleased to find the Easy-to-Read series. There are six easy-to-read titles from two publishers. They are:

Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees
Pooh Goes Visiting
Eeyore Has a Birthday
Tigger Comes to the Forest
Christopher Robin Leads an Expedition
Pooh Invents a New Game

Each book is based on one chapter from the complete works. These little books are divided into four chapters, although it should be no problem to read one from start to finish in one sitting.

The print is large and well spaced, and there are ample illustrations (the original drawings by E.H. Shepard) on every page spread to keep little eyes engaged in the story. Most important, the editor has removed most of the passages that aren't so kid friendly and has simplified the stories without giving them a Disney style candy coating. One could read the original story and then the easy-to-read version and get the same basic plot; when going from the Milne works to the Disney versions, the same is certainly not true.

I didn't give these books five stars because the editor retained some language and dialogue that may be a bit confusing for children in the intended age range. Nevertheless, these books are a wonderful introduction to a classic cast of characters for the preschool set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pooh on Tape
This is our very first book on tape.My son is five and listened intently to every word.I can't wait to go on vacation and have him listen while we are in the car for 4 hours. The reader is very clear speaking.I am not able to talk while this is playing because my son really wants to listen to it.He loves to be read to.I wish I would have discovered this sooner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
What a refreshing change to hear Pooh in his native tongue!I am a great fan of Disney movies but Pooh is something special in this wonderful audio version of the timeless stories. My 5 year old listens to this tape all the time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic production of classic tales!
My 3 1/2 year-old son and I absolutely love this cassette on a number of levels! The acting is great: lively without being over-the-top, convincing without being melodramatic. The cast brings out the humor of Milne's writing beautifully.I have to admit that I was not a Milne fan before purchasing this; I just didn't 'get' it.After listening to this cassette, I realized why: Winnie the Pooh is marketed here in the U.S. as an early childhood character/series.But it's not.The stories, the humor, the characters, and the language all are aimed at children about the age of Christoper Robin, who must be atleast 5, *and* at their parents.Ie there are elements that a child would never get, but I do, and so both my preschooler and I understand at our levels.Other fantastic aspects: great sound quality, sound effects, choice of stories. One point: Because of the British accents and idioms, this products works best for a patient and interested child. Also, for the preschooler (such as mine), it required that I listen with him the first few times until he understood the storyline well enough to follow without me.But don't let this discourage you. From the start, my child enjoyed the different voices (especially piglet) and sound effects. The subtlety only means that he doesn't get bored with it -- after even the 30th time. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Simplified for little ones, but faithful to the original

Up untilnow! Accept no substitutes: this issimply the finest Pooh audio series yet created, beating by a *far*distance the Alan Bennett and (ugh!) Charles Kuralt versions. Type the 10-digit ISBN number into theAmazon search field to go directly to the webpages for these cassettes. ... Read more
