5-0 out of 5 stars A Life Well Lived In the Theatre
As other reviewers have pointed out, Marie Wallace is best known for her two years on the spooky soap opera Dark Shadows. But her career, and her life, encompass so much more. For decades, Marie Wallace was a working actress, appearing on television, and in scores of theatre productions, including eight stints on Broadway. Her credits are impressive, and she has worked with many theatre greats. In her new book, On Stage And In Shadows, she invites her readers to figuratively join her for a cup of coffee while she tells of her childhood in New York City, her early days as a model, and her wonderful adventures in show business. In sharing her memories, Marie Wallace not only regales us with stories about Ethel Merman, Jimmy Durante, Jackie Gleason, Bob Fosse, and her dear friend Ruth Buzzi, she educates us on the hard work it takes to succeed and do good work in the often cuthroat world of New York theatre. The book, like it's author, is a charming delight! On a personal note, I'd like to say that, after having met and talked to Marie Wallace at numerous Dark Shadows conventions, her charm is no act!Marie Wallace in person is every bit as warm and delightful as she is on the printed page.Bravo!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful !
Many know Ms .Wallace from her time on the classic cult soap opera, Dark Shadows. While a fascinating and integral part of Wallace's career, Dark Shadows is simply a small thread in a very largeand impressive tapestry of work and I might add, an enviable career on the stage and screen .

Those hoping to read about Ms. Wallace's days in the strange and supernatural world of Collinsport, Maine won't be disappointed. The actress offers up wonderful stories of her time on the spooky soap. Even more fascinating is a look back at her time on the Great White Way working opposite and along side luminaries such as Ethel Merman, Gwen Verdon and Bert Lahr.

More then anything else I love this book because it so purely conversational.Every moment is told so vividly and with such great detail, without ever once lagging or boring the reader. I honestly felt as though this lady had pulled up a chair next to me and was just shooting the breeze. The book also chronicles a Manhattan and a Broadway we'll never see again . I found one very important sentiment Marie makes through out herpersonal story . Something anyone in any profession or walk of life should keep in mind: take chances, keep moving on, don't be afraid to venture down a new path!

Marie Wallace: Actress, Photographer, Raconteur!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for theatre buffs
This book was a delightful read.Written in an easy-going and friendly style, Marie keeps the reader hooked with her career progression throughout the years. She shows how a positive outlook and energetic approach to life have benefitted her both her life and career.

In addition, her stories about each of the shows she was in are engaging and fun to read about, from her descriptions of other actors, some well-known, some known well only in theatre, to her take on each of the characters she played. It was good to see how much she has enjoyed her career as an actor and later as a photographer.

A warm and charming person herself, Marie Wallace earned with hard work the accolades she received in her shows and still receives when she encounters her fans. What a treat to get to read about her life and career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Portrait of an ever-changing artist! A revelation!
"On Stage and in Shadows" is a joy from cover to cover, an invigorating experience that hits every note beautifully. If you're interested in how an actor/actress "makes it" against seemingly insurmountable odds, then Marie's book is for you. She candidly chronicles her truly remarkable life and career(s), from cradle to today--all the while pulling no punches and sparing no detail.I was particularly interested in "On Stage" because of my connection with "Dark Shadows," the infamous gothic soap opera that featured Marie as "Eve," "Crazy Jenny Collins," and "Megan Todd." Her fan club was the first one I joined, way back in 1969, and our eventual meeting at Hampton Playhouse on July 29th of that same year has remained a clear and nostalgic memory for me. She is both a fascinating individual and a strong-willed survivor, as you, too, will discover in "On Stage and in Shadows." Profusely illustrated, written in a personal, conversational tone, this book is one for the ages. Highest rating!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read!
Theater and TV lovers will enjoy this career memoir of actress and photographer Marie Wallace even if unfamiliar with her work.I happen to be familiar with her stage and TV career so I loved the book all the more.Ms. Wallace has worked with many performers and directors, some of the better known performers being Jackie Gleason, Ruth Buzzi, Ethel Merman, Gwen Vernon just to name a few and her insights into the business itself is as interesting to read as her recollections of the cast and productions.

As an actor and acting teacher, I recommend this book for those new to the business as Ms. Wallace offers advice and opinions about how things were done when she first started out and how they work now.Ms. Wallace's memoir is a fascinating read for anyone who loves the business and fun of showbusiness.

4-0 out of 5 stars Barnabas Collins personal photos
A superb book of black & white photos! Jonathan Frid master of the role of Barnabas Collins from the gothic series Dark Shadows. Many photos of his personal life & acting rolls.A must have for any Johnathan Frid fan!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great memories in it
I remember being a young lad, and running home from school so I could see my favorite show - Dark Shadows (1966-71). The show was populated with a number of fascinating characters, but none more fascinating than the vampire Barnabas Collins, who was played by veteran actor Jonathan Frid. This book is a collection of Jonathan Frid's photographs, arranged like a picture album.

Most of the pictures are connected with the show - some are publicity shots, some are from on-set, some are from events, and some are from during off-stage moments. All are black-and-white, unfortunately, and many do not have good captions (or any caption at all for that matter). But, that said, it is a very interesting book, with lots of great memories in it. If you are a fellow Dark Shadows' fan, then I highly recommend that you find this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book!
This book brought back so many memories and the review of each episode was brilliant. I learned so much about the actorsthat I never knew. I felt like I was watching all over again. I know this will be one of those books I look over again and again. The pictures were fantastic. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Dark Shadows Books
Kathryn Leigh Scott's "Dark Shadows Companion: 25th Anniversary Collection" is a pleasant journey back in time.Just as the show was fond of moving back and forth between the past and present, this book carries me back to the late 1960's, where I tuned in for 30 minutes for my daily fix of vampires, werewolves, witches, demons, etc.

The book is a charming look back at the most extraordinary soap opera of its time, and captures the mood of the series in a manner only an insider could achieve. It describes in great detail the seminal events of the show and the behind-the-scenes circumstances leading up to them, from the arrival by train of Victoria Winters in the small village of Collinsport (inspired by Dan Curtis' dream of a girl on a train) to the the final episode in 1971, with the Collins family wondering if a vampire might be lurking at Collinwood. We were assured there was no vampire, and the endless array of fantastic happenings at the great house were a thing of the past. The book also describes the bold decision to introduce the supernatural into its story lines and eventually roll the dice with the introduction of Barnabas Collins, the 176 year-old vampire who became the star and hero of the series. It describes the creation of Barnabas' portrait, which was created without a face because they didn't yet know who would fill the role Jonathan Frid played with such dignity.

Kathryn Lee Scott's book offers an episode synopsis, describing in a sentence or two what happened each day.It offers a telling if perhaps unintentionally amusing glimpse at how slowly soap opera stories developed; for example, episode 41 reveals that "Liz is concerned that Carolyn might prefer Burke over Joe."I chuckled at the notion that such a mundane plot development could captivate me for an entire half-hour, but when we learn in episode 963 that "Jeb summons an army of zombies to kidnap Julia" and "Megan rises from the dead as a vampire", we understand that Dark Shadows knew how to pick up the pace and fill a half-hour with action when it needed to.

The book also freely admits to the literary inspirations for their plot lines, from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to Count St. Germaine, from the "Turn of the Screw" to H. P. Lovecraft's "Cthulhu Mythos".In parallel time we found Cyrus Longworth and John Yaeger as a counterpart to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and, finally, Shirley Jackson's story "the Lottery".

There also exists in this book a sampling of photos from the series, reminding us of the gorgeous sets, costumes, and (most of all) actors and actresses that stirred our imaginations. It was easy to see why Jonathan Frid, David Selby, Chris Pennock and the rest set teenaged girls' hearts to pounding, and frankly, Kathryn Leigh Scott, Lara Parker and Nancy Barrett were flat-out beautiful.I remember being foolishly unimpressed by the first appearance of a young Kate Jackson on the series, thinking her beauty paled next to the established female cast members.Ten years later she starred in a show that made her name synonymous with beauty, but the photographs in this book will show you why I felt this way about Maggie, Carolyn, and Angelique.

The book is a delightful peek into a show that made the supernatural cool, and I recommend it for anyone seeking to reconnect with the joy Dark Shadows held for them.Ms. Scott has published several books on Dark Shadows since this one was released, but it is still in many ways my favorite.I encourage anyone who ever watched Dark Shadows to pick up this wonderful book.In an era of resurgent interest in vampires due to the success of the "Twilight" book and movie, I invite you to take a look at the show that got there ahead of them all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent
Exellent Book.If your wanting to know anything about Dark Shadows or are a fan this is the book for you.I have had mine since its first printing.I still take it out and read it.Wonderful pictures, and a complete episode guide.A Must Have!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book about the history of Dark Shadows.
The book explains how the show got it's start. You read about how the actors were choosen and about them personally. There is a section aboutwhat each actor has done since the show ended. An episode guide gives abrief summary about all 1245 shows. There are several pictures throughoutthe book.Stories are told about the writing, set designs, and funny thingsthat happened during the run of the show. This is a very interesting book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jon Frid and John Karlan together at last
I love this about as much as any of the big finish radio dramas. Jonathan Frid and John Karlan playing off each other in the story is as good as my other favorite "Echos of Insanity" with John Karlan and Lara Parker. John Karlan does just as good with Willie Loomis now as when he played him in the 60's and 70's and Jonathan Frid as he doesn't have to memorize and deliver is such a limited time frame as with the original television show is able to give great in-depth dialogue with this drama that focuses on the pre-vampire Barnabas, who is still able to be cruel when needed and when he is post-vampire is no match for a mere zombie. Witch is before and Witch after Witch Witch is Witch? Obviously I am mispelling plays on words here but poor Barney can't be a break, maybe he wishes he had it more like his namesake, one of the 12 deciples of Jesus, I bet Saint Barnabas didn't have to deal with witches quite so much. anyway great drama. ...
