Product Description
Many indigenous American languages face imminent extinction, and the dictionary, often the only written documentation of these languages, stands as a powerful tool in preserving them. These essays, written by leading scholars in Native American language studies, provide a comprehensive picture of the theory and practice of Native American lexicography. The contributors discuss the technical, social, and personal challenges involved with the complex task of creating a dictionary of a Native American language. The book is also the first of its kind to address both standard and new issues surrounding the challenging task of transforming oral languages in general into written dictionaries. Making Dictionaries will be an invaluable source for those involved with all aspects of documenting and understanding endangered languages and for the increasing number of native communities engaged in language reclamation and preservation efforts. ... Product Description
The International Encyclopedia of Linguistics, 2nd Edition encompasses the full range of the contemporary field of linguistics, including historical, comparative, formal, mathematical, functional, and philosophical linguistics with special attention given to interrelations within branches of linguistics and to relations of linguistics with other disciplines.Areas of intersection with the social and behavioral sciences--ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and behavioral linguistics--receive major coverage, along with interdisciplinary work in language and literature, mathematical linguistics, computational linguistics, and applied linguistics.

Longer entries in the International Encyclopedia of Linguistics, ranging up to four thousand words, survey the major fields of study--for example, anthropological linguistics, history of linguistics, semantics, and phonetics.Shorter entries treat specific topics within these fields, such as code switching, sound symbolism, and syntactic features.Other short entries define and discuss technical terms used within the various subfields or provide sketches of the careers of important scholars in the history of linguistics, such as Leonard Bloomfield, Roman Jakobson, and Edward Sapir.

A major portion of the work is its extensive coverage of languages and language families. From those as familiar as English, Japanese, and the Romance languages to Hittite, Yoruba, and Nahuatl, all corners of the world receive treatment.Languages that are the subject of independent entries are analyzed in terms of their phonology, grammatical features, syntax, and writing systems.Lists attached to each article on a language group or family enumerate all languages, extinct or still spoken, within that group and provide detailed information on the number of known speakers, geographical range, and degree of intelligibility with other languages in the group. In this way, virtually every known language receives coverage.

For ease of reference and to aid research, the articles are alphabetically arranged, each signed by the contributor, supported by up-to-date bibliographies, line drawings, maps, tables, and diagrams, and readily accessible via a system of cross-references and a detailed index and synoptic outline. Authoritative, comprehensive, and innovative, the 2nd edition of the International Encyclopedia of Linguistics will be an indispensable addition to personal, public, academic, and research libraries and will introduce a new generation of readers to the complexities and concerns of this field of study. ... Product Description
Attempting to prove that the human mind is both a social construct and a computational device, as opposed to one or the other, linguistics expert William Frawley focuses on language and reconciles the linguistic device (the mind) and the linguistic person. He presents an examination of certain congenital disorders, like autism, that disrupt speech to clarify the issue of computational AND cognitive control. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Important But Narrowly Directed
Frawley has taken on a very important task, trying to reconcile and unify cognitive science with a more sociocultural understanding of mind. I am very interested in this topic, so I was disappointed that I didn't get more out of the book than I did, even though I came to it with a doctorate in sociology and considerable background in science and philosophy. Ideally the book should have appealed to educated readers in many disciplines, but Frawley assumes a great deal of prior study in the philosophy of mind. Few without that specific background will be able to appreciate and evaluate his argument. Even within that field, some will probably be put off by his computationist position: "Consciousness emerges out of the purely computational manipulations of nonconscious processes." The project may be the "unification of the social and computational mind," but in the end, computation embraces all.

2-0 out of 5 stars An in-depth exploration of language and the mind.
In this book, Frawley links Vygotsky's sociocultural theory of the mind with the computational mind in cognitive science. He presents an in-depth exploration of the development of linguistics and how it relates to thenature of the mind. He explains that we not only have a language ofthought, but also a language for thought. This book is designed tochallenge our beliefs on thinking, not to give easy answers. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume is a comprehensive, up-to-date, and readable introduction to linguistic meaning. While partial to conceptual and typological approaches, the book also presents results from formal approaches. Throughout, the focus is on grammatical meaning -- the way languages delineate universal semantic space and encode it in grammatical form.

Subjects covered by the author include: the domain of linguistic semantics and the basic tools, assumptions, and issues of semantic analysis; semantic properties of entities, events, and thematic roles; language and space; tense, aspect, and the internal structure and temporal ordering of events; modality, negation, and the epistemology of the speaker; and modification and attribution. In contrast to most current treatments of semantics, this book is accessible to the beginning student of semantics and linguistics and also useful to the advanced practitioner. A textbook and reference work in a single volume, it can be used in a number of disciplines: psychology, computer science, and anthropology as well as linguistics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frawley's Linguistic Semantics
Highly recommended. Useful for many Indo-European languages.
Gives clear definitions and uses a lot of basic common sense in exposing many grammatical issues in true semantics.

He avoids speculations and theories which are so popular amongst younger "linguists". This is an excellent nuts-and-bolts tool for analyzing the meanings of various linguistic entities. He states that the method is in a decontextualized format, yet it is an easy step to integrate the analyses into a larger contextual framework. I really recommend his chapters on "Thematic Roles" and the one on "Aspect".

His writing is direct, clear and is not a style which seeks to try to impress the reader or inflate his ability. He uses a minimum of fancy linguistic symbols and diagrams, thus other scholars and laymen can read with clarity his profound and clear observations.

The hardbound edition is well made, though no statement is made as to the acidity of the paper used. It has 3 indexes, and a good bibliography. recommended by Gary S. Dykes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frawley's Linguistic Semantics
The hardcover edition is a well made, smyth-sewn volume. The paper is probably not acid-free, nor is it ANSI certified. The price for the hardcover, is a bit steep, the paperback is a solid value.
To this reviewer, this work is a classic. Frawley, appears to have a good understanding of language and meaning, and he clearly presents this understanding in this work. Frawley recognizes the innateness of various aspects of language in humans (i.e. we are born with a special language ability) as opposed to being just products of an environment (per Skinner and many anthropologists).
The text is well laid out, and it moves from the introductory to the complex. It has all the proper indexes, and bibliography, and an index of the several hundred languages referred to. Frawley is not afraid to tackle complex issues (such as aspect, entities [in which he corrects numerous traditional errors -- like WHAT is a noun] and thematic roles). Each chapter is followed with a nice concise conclusion.
Recall that this is not just a general text on "semantics", rather it focuses upon LINGUISTIC semantics. Meaning is encoded in the grammar, and he prefers to evaluate it in a decontextualized approach. However, he does pay close attention to the syntactical relationships in the context of the text under review. He makes very clear many profound aspects of meaning! He also stimulates further study. A joy to read!
A great work, and very useful for a variety of language studies. Frawley addresses numerous language types (ergative/absolute, and nominative/accusative et cetera) and extracts numerous relevant examples. This work is also very educational, it teaches in an authoritative manner, yet in a manner not offensive to neophytes! A much needed text on the shelf of any linguist and those who work in language translation... ... Read more

This book covers the essentials of modality and offers both foundational ideas and cutting edge advances. The book consists of what are essentially tutorials on modality and modal notions, covering definitions of modality, morphosyntactic form, conceptual and logical semantics, historical development, and acquisition. There are also specific chapters on modality in Zapotec and American Sign Language, which show the range of forms that modal notions can take. To assist its tutorial function, the book closes with a comprehensive conceptual outline of all the chapters. ... Read more

Product Description
Knowledge Discovery in Databases brings together current research on the exciting problem of discovering useful and interesting knowledge in databases. It spans many different approaches to discovery, including inductive learning, bayesian statistics, semantic query optimization, knowledge acquisition for expert systems, information theory, and fuzzy 1 sets. The rapid growth in the number and size of databases creates a need for tools and techniques for intelligent data understanding. Relationships and patterns in data may enable a manufacturer to discover the cause of a persistent disk failure or the reason for consumer complaints. But today's databases hide their secrets beneath a cover of overwhelming detail. The task of uncovering these secrets is called "discovery in databases." This loosely defined subfield of machine learning is concerned with discovery from large amounts of possible uncertain data. Its techniques range from statistics to the use of domain knowledge to control search.Following an overview of knowledge discovery in databases, thirty technical chapters are grouped in seven parts which cover discovery of quantitative laws, discovery of qualitative laws, using knowledge in discovery, data summarization, domain?specific discovery methods, integrated and multi-paradigm systems, and methodology and application issues. An important thread running through the collection is reliance on domain knowledge, starting with general methods and progressing to specialized methods where domain knowledge is built in.Gregory Piatetski-Shapiro is Senior Member of Technical Staff and Principal Investigator of the Knowledge Discovery Project at GTE Laboratories. William Frawley is Principal Member of Technical Staff at GTE and Principal Investigator of the Learning in Expert Domains Project. ... Read more

I am a new George Frawley Fan.I am waiting for more of his works to be published
My mother suggested, after reading Racing Winds, to read it myself. I was hesitant, but decided to give it a try because she loved the book so much. What can I say but I am hooked on this writer now. I could not put this book down and read it in 3 days, which is very odd for me since I dont have the time to read so much. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
My employer loaned me this book, not with the recommendation that it was a stellar read, but with an expression that clearly told me that she regretted wasting the $20 for it.

I could not get past the first 10 pages. The dialog is stilted, formulaic, and unrealistic, and the author seems to have mistaken utter confusion for mystery. Cliches run rampant, the plot is rushed, and little time is given for character insight.

Now, perhaps you are thinking I didn't give the author time to develop plot and characters. However, a good author should be able to portray why a set of parents would appear loving though upset on page one, then suddenly become cruel and indifferent on page three. Honestly, I don't think I rushed my judgment. The author rushed his characters.

Also, explain to me why his first book, Racing Winds, has nine reviews, three of which were submitted by the same person, two submitted by people with the same last name and from the same location. And all five of these reviews list the book as being five star material.

Join a writing group, attend some workshops, Mr. Frawley. There are excellent resources in your area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This book was well written and executed. The first time I read it I couldn't put it down. As far as reading it again goes, it has great re-readability

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm not too sure
Although the idea was great, I don't think the execution was all that great. It took me several months to get through it.The first hundred pages were not engaging. It just wasn't what I was expecting.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful read!!!!
I had met the author during the Christmas holidays at a local bookstore and after speaking with him I purchased a copy for my wife.I just got around to reading it and wished I wouldn't have waited so long. The story is amazing with how it is described and moves along so quickly.Definitely a quick read as you don't want to put it down. Most of this is set in Boulder, CO and being a Denver native it is easy to picture the area he is writing about.Truly terrifying, suspenseful and bewitching.I would love to see a movie version as the script has already been written as the book itself.Definitely recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Detailed and Descriptive!A must read!
I've just finished the book - WOW!Mr. Frawley's wordsmithing is definitely on a higher level than most. The sceens are very descriptive, bringing the story to life. The history is well researched and knowledgable. All of this comes together to create a story so believable that the reader finds real emotions stirring within them.Well done! ... William Clement Frawley (February 26, 1887 - March 3, 1966) was an American stage entertainer, screen and television actor. Although Frawley acted in over 100 films, he achieved his greatest fame playing landlord Fred Mertz on the sitcom I Love Lucy. William was born to Michael A. Frawley and Mary E. Brady in Burlington, Iowa. As a young boy, Bill (as he was commonly called), attended Roman Catholic school and sang with the St. Paul's Church choir. As he got older, he loved playing bit roles in local theater productions, as well as performing in amateur shows. A career in show business seemed within reach, however; his mother, a deeply religious woman, frowned upon the idea. ... Read more
