Editorial Review

Product Description
Police interrogation attracts debate and controversy around the world. Audio-visual recording is widely regarded as a panacea for problems in police questioning of suspects."Interrogating Images" presents the first empirical study of the routine use of audio-visual recording anywhere in the world, focusing on New South Wales, Australia where such recording has been required for more than a decade. Its introduction is set in a historical account of disputes and concerns about police questioning of suspects. There is a detailed study of the participants in the interrogation process. Various styles of police interviewing are identified, showing out the nature and purpose of interrogation are inaccurate. A chapter assesses the impact in NSW of 'investigative interviewing', a questioning style very different from that used in the USA. The penultimate chapter examines the experiences and perceptions of criminal justice professionals - judges, defence lawyers, prosecutors, and police."Interrogating Images" concludes by pointing to some dangers of misusing audio-visual recording. If the complete questioning process is not recorded, confessions may be rehearsed and unreliable.A second danger is the misreading of images, particularly by those who overestimate their ability to identify deception from a suspect's 'body language'. Audio-visual recording can be a useful tool, but it must be one part of a broader process of effectively regulating investigative practices. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Incredible detail
Like the other reviewers, its hard not to notice partisanship in this history though for a 19th century work, it escapes the depths of some other works done from the CS and US sides.

The amount of information/detail in this book is astounding and even the critics note that. You get to see the commanders of every ship down to tugs in the various actions, high sea cruisers, and blockading squadrons.Tiny actions that I'd never heard of (and I'm a voracious reader of the period)are detailed down to the number of guns and sailors involved. We see policy debate at both Navy Department and the varying squadrons. We also see the varying coordination problems between Army and Navy on different operations. The ever increasing tempo of technological improvements is followed and varying counter measures to CSA defenses highlighted.

There is much here to wade through and some of it is very dry.Written in the verbose 19th century style, it can be a trial to read and it took me some time to finish it.Ignoring some of the political conclusions and the oft times one sided aspects of the book, it is an excellent one volume history of the naval war and a plus to any library on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars a rare view
Porters perspective of the navel operations gives the reader a rare view of history. written some years after the war to set the record of other navel histories of the day, straight. I find the detailed reports by participants and commentary by porter to be both informative and entertaining. Bias? Yes... but he gives his opinion in a straight forward manor and gives credit (both good and bad) where credit is due.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good account of the war by a (biased) participant
First of all, I haven't fact-checked Porter's narratives and orders of battle. However, much like Churchill's WW2 histories, a politically biased account by an actor in the history can be an invaluable resource. And, likeChurchill, Porter's writing style has that high style that makes for arefreshing change (in small doses) from today's more pedestrianprose.

Most books on the ACW afloat are narratives, this has a lot more'meat' due to Porter's participation in a number of the actions and hisinsights behind the scenes in the USN. I recommend this book, but not as anunimpeachable source.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great detail, Lousy history
Gideon Welles once said that the Porters were all liars and braggarts. This massive volume by David Dixon Porter goes far to proving it.As history, it is lousy, heavily biased, and one-sided.However, for theserious historian, there is a great amount of administrative detail thatcannot be found elsewhere.A good source, if its limitations are properlyrecognized. ... Product Description
Polyelectrolytes are used in water treatment systems for a variety of applications including coagulation, flocculation, ballasted sedimentation, filtration, dissolved air flotation, and sludge conditioning. There are multiple advantages to using polyelectrolytes including more efficient removal of particles, organics, and color; reduced sludge formation; sludge conditioning; and reduced reliance on metal salts. This project was developed to determine the degree to which organic polyelectrolytes react with other chemicals used in water treatment applications. The objectives of this project were to: evaluate current patterns of chemical use for drinking water production; conduct bench-scale testing to evaluate polyelectrolyte interactions and the impacts of these interactions on process performance, water quality, and operations; assess the degree to which exposure to ultraviolet light impacts polyelectrolyte reactions with oxidants; and assess the effect of precoating filter media with various polyelectrolytes on filtration efficiency and filter backwashing effectiveness. The research approach included an Internet survey, development of direct and indirect characterization methods to assess polyelectrolyte activity, bench-scale testing of polyelectrolyte interactions with other chemicals, and pilot-scale testing. Screening tools included organic carbon oxidation, absorption spectra, and reactions with oxidants. Performance measures for polymer effectiveness included tests of particle size, filtration rate, and residual turbidity. Disinfection by-product formation potentials were also used to compare the relative degree of oxidation that occurs for individual polyelectrolytes. Pilot-scale tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of precoating filter media with polyelectrolytes on filter run times and filter ripening. A fluorescent labeled version of one of the polyelectrolytes was used to determine the fate of the polyelectrolytes through water treatment systems. ... Read more
