4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
An interesting and well written biography of a key and often overlooked Civil War participant.

The role of the Federal and Confederate Navies in the War Between the States has been neglected by almost all historians. Why? Most of the more colorful, decisive actions, the events that sell books, were fought on land.

This is a different type of story from a refreshingly different point of view. It is exciting and enlightening. The Federals could not have won without their excellent Navy, whose role was every bit as crucial as their Army's. This is as good an account of the U.S. Navy's role in the Union's Civil War victory as there is. Viewed through the life of David Dixon Porter, it is a fine testament to the Navy and the man

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Civil war read
I was fastenated by the story of one of America's fightingAdmrials. Porter's success on the Mississpi river prevented the southfrom using it to transport goods and men anywhere. He effectively cutthe West out of the war by maintianing control of this river.

The book reads as well as any by Bruce Catton. If you think that the Civil war was fought only on the ground, this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chester Hearn Scores Again with D.D. Porter's Bio
Chester G. Hearn has proven once again that he's among the top rank of Civil War naval historians writing today. His bio of one of the war's most colorful naval officers is thorough and very readable, and provides greatinsight into the motivations of a most difficult and controversial officer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pontiac's Uprising Still of the Highest Significance
Between the French and Indian War and American Revolution exists, in the minds of most, a period of inactivity, a veritable dark age of United States history. That statement could not be farther from the truth as seen in David Dixon's tour de force account of Pontiac's Rebellion entitled Never Come to Peace Again: Pontiac's Uprising and the Fate of the British Empire in North America. Following seven years of conflict between the British and the French in the theatre of North America, Dixon argues that colonists were driven to a desperate call for revolution after three more vaunted years of Indian uprising.

Dixon uses the first chapter of his narrative monograph to describe the years leading up to Pontiac's Rebellion in the colonies, particularly highlighting the interactions between French, British, and Indian influences. Within the lengthy forty page chapter, Dixon successfully sets the table for Indian rebellion in his discussion of key events such as the Walking Purchase of 1737 and the young Virginian George Washington's journey into the Ohio River Valley. Influential characters on all sides including General John Forbes, Monacatootha, and Celeron de Blaineville.

The second chapter, entitled "A Colony Sprung from Hell," Dixon begins his analysis of the time period immediately following the Seven Years War and centers his narrative around several important geographic centers, most notably Fort Duquesne at the forks of the Allegheny, Ohio, and Monongahela rivers. Also during this section Dixon introduces, for the first time, Colonel Henry Bouquet. "Almost from the beginning of his service in America, Bouquet proved himself as a confidant and defatigable officer...He carefully detailed plans for conducting extensive campaigns in the wilderness..."(43)

Chapter three saw witness to the beginnings of a possible mobilization of forces against the potentially disastrous situation brewing in the American wilderness among its native tribes. Following a brief background on General Jeffrey Amherst, Dixon discusses the British military operations to Detroit as well as the Great Lakes region. "One might surmise that General Amherst would have been alarmed by the reports coming from the wilderness forst. After all, the few troops he had at his disposal were spread dangerously thin across the frontier."(100) It is not until chapter four that Dixon begins his examination of the Indian leader Pontiac and his call to arms for Indians to unite against their red-coated foes.

The fifth chapter is used to recount, in great, the true bore of Pontiac's Rebellion, particularly in the Pittsburgh area. Following the dispatch of Simon Ecuyer to command Fort Pitt, Seneca guerilla units systematically attacked a number of forts throughout Pennsylvania. Also the focus of the chapter was the beginning of Colonel Bouquet's doomed journey toward Fort Pitt, first traveling through Bushy Run Station. "The Bravest Men I Ever Saw," Dixon's sixth chapter, examined the Ambush at Bushy Run in great detail. It is in this section that Dixon claims "historians studying the Battle of Bushy Run have tended to downplay Bouquet's achievement..." (197) The final two chapters of Never Come to Peace Again explore the end of Pontiac's Rebellion and the subsequent events that followed. However, perhaps most fitting, is Dixon's subtle reiteration of his primary thesis, "They nourished deep-seated resentment not only against the Indians but also toward the provincial and imperial authorities that had failed to protect them. Buried deep inside this smoldering hatred and resentment lay the seeds of revolution."(243)

David Dixon was a true scholar and possessed a genuine passion for the intense study of history. A Professor of History at Slippery Rock University for nearly twenty years, Dixon acted as the curator and director of the Old Stone House, a nineteenth century pioneer inn located north of Butler, PA. After attending Slippery Rock University in pursuit of a B.S in secondary education and M.A in history, Dixon was awarded his Ph.D from Kent State University. Dixon is also the author of Hero of Beecher Island: The Life and Military Career of George A. Forsyth. Dixon passed away in July of 2008 and left a lasting legacy and a positive influence on both his students and colleagues.

Dixon cited a large number of primary and secondary sources in the completion of Never Come to Peace Again. Of the most notable, Dixon consulted the papers of several of his subjects including General Jeffrey Amherst and the letter of Colonel Henry Bouquet. When considering the newspaper that Dixon cited, the most prominent was the Pennsylvania Gazette. To better round out his use of sources, Dixon has also cited some French sources, particularly Les Sauvages Americains. Although there are some citations from secondary sources, the overwhelming amount come from original research done by Dixon.

Never Come to Peace Again is a triumph in the field of Colonial-Indian relations, particularly regarding warfare between the two rivals. While the period between the two wars is generally regarded as one of relative, uneventful peace, Dixon not only highlights the major conflict of the time period but places it into a sequence of events. In the way that he employs his sources and weaves his narrative, Dixon reinforces his primary thesis of rising discontent culminating at the end of Pontiac's Rebellion. As seen in Breen's Tobacco Culture: The Mentality of the Great Tidewater Planters on the Eve of Revolution, discontent for the British government arose in many more places than just the urban commerce hotbeds of Boston and Philadelphia. Dixon's account of the events in the Ohio River Valley and farther west to Detroit only serves to underscore the far reaching grasp of revolution on the American colonies.

By forming his research into a riveting and historically grounded narrative, David Dixon dispels a number of myths about the time period between the Seven Years War and the American Revolution. Following years of war, Dixon provides ample information to soundly support his thesis of colonial discontent erupting into calls for revolution at the end of Pontiac's Rebellion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great History
This is a well written historical account of Pontiac's War, from an author who has just recently passed away.Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on "Pontiac's War" with the British
Finally, the third book that I have read on Pontiac's war with the British is a charm.Unlike one book that was a historical novel, and somewhat fantastic in its portrayals of what happened, and a more recent book that was a boring scholarly read, this one is believable, with many sources identified, and interesting to read. Some new ideas were also brought to light for me in reading this book.First, although this is known as Pontiac's War, Pontiac only led the attacks and siege of Detroit. And, this part of the war was not successful. He had no involvement with the taking of the other British forts, and towards the end of the war, he was despised by his fellow Indians, resulting in his murder at a young age.Second, at the end of this war, an uprising of settlersin the Allegheny region occurred that was a precursor to the American revolution. This occurred as a direct result of Pontiac's War showing the connection between this war and the Revolution. One of the highlights of the book is the battle of Bushy Run where Bouquet with a tired and sick army is attacked by the Indians, but through trickery defeats them, resulting in the only defeat of an Indian army by the British. There are a lot of these interesting anecdotes in this book highlighting a book that is well worth the read for an individual interested in the colonial period and the wars with the Indians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
Never Come to Peace Again is written in a reader-friendly style so often lost on historians. It appears meticulously researched which is necessary for this often overlooked topic. The book incredibly ties Pontiac's war with the Seven Years' War and American Revolutionary War. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Newbies
If you are new to SAP or BW, do not read this book. No step by steps or walkthroughs. I had to constantly goto help.sap.com to understand the concepts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I had the first edition of the Book and some of the best ideas of SAP BW I indeed picked from this book. This is certainly for people more interested in the architecture of SAP BW not so much for people looking to build Step by Step. Highly recommended for people who are looking to design from first principles (offcourse from a Software package point of view) of how SAP BW core is coded and behave. Wish it may have covered the extraction bit, for standard areas atleast, in much more details though.

5-0 out of 5 stars SAP BW Technology Explained
For anyone about to dip a cautious toe into the ocean known as SAP BW for the first time, this book is an extremely handy guide. It is very difficult to extract a meaningful overview of BW from the SAP documentation, which is oriented to very specific tasks, and which discusses everything in language that manages to be abstract and jargon-filled at the same time. An immediately useful aspect of the book is an appendix that provides a guide to the many SAP acronyms. Terminology unique to SAP BW is extensive and often bewildering to the newcomer, especially since there is a tendency for SAP to apply terms to specific concepts in a very idiosyncratic way. This book is very helpful to the reader already familiar with DW/BI concepts who is trying to comprehend the SAP way of doing things. The architectural overview is also excellent, especially since it provides insights into which components are required and which are optional, often in the context of the historical evolution of the SAP BW product family. I am very glad to have found this book, which has considerably clarified my understanding of this technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book - but very serious typo errors
This book is a gem - an asset to professionals or starters in SAP BW. Not surprising given the credentials of the authors. But there are many very very serious typo errors. Obviously there was little or no proof reading done. Its a shame on Wiley publications !

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of concepts and theory. Very little hands-on guidance.
This book does a good job of explaining BW concepts and theory. But there is no hands on guidance or step by step walkthroughs. After I understand the general workflow and overview of what is supposed to happen, I needed other books and guidance to figure out the specifics of what needs to get done.

For an SAP expert new to cubes and associated concepts, this would probably be very helpful. For someone like myself, who has used a few other BI/cube products, but is new to SAP, this book is a poor choice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clash of Cultures
"Bushy Run Battlefield" is a brief but very good guide to this 1763 battle that took place in western Pennsylvania. The battle was part of a larger conflict between Native Americans and colonial America often called "Pontiac's Rebellion" or "Pontiac's Uprising;" it began as a siege led by an Ottawa chief named Pontiac at Fort Detroit.Soon the assaults spread to other forts and towns, including Fort Pitt (modern day Pittsburgh). To meet this threat from the Native Americans, and in an attempt to save Fort Pitt, several English regiments were dispatched from New York, marching through dense forests...never quite knowing when or where the Native Americans might strike...

Although short at only 48 pages, I thought the book did an excellent job in explaining the "backstory" leading up to the battle, in describing the battle itself, and also telling the reader what happened afterwards. Also included are maps, pictures and drawings, all of which give more "flavor" to the book.Highly recommended for anyone interested in colonial/pre-Revolution American history, or in Native American history.

Product Description

George A. Forsyth took a determined stand against Sioux and Cheyenne Indians at the Battle of Beech Island in 1868 and in the process transformed this minor frontier skirmish into a legendary symbol of the American West. This engagement helped mold popular conception of Indian warfare and provided Forsyth with the reputation of being an intrepid Indian fighter like George Custer and Buffalo Bill. Although this image of Forsyth is not necessarily incorrect, it is certainly incomplete.

Forsyth began his military career with the firing on Fort Sumter in 1861. Like many other officers who would subsequently gain distinction in the Indian campaign of the West, he learned the art of warfare in the great battles of the Civil War. His ascendancy through the ranks paralleled the rise of the Union cavalry as an effective combat arm during the war, and his education as a cavalryman came under the watchful eye of Phil Sheridan, one of America's most compelling soldiers. The Forsyth-Sheridan relationship began on the Virginia battlefields and continued until 1881.

During this long period George Forsyth was one of Sheridan's most trusted aides, serving as the general's eyes and ears in countless military missions that took him from the banks of the Yellowstone to the sacred Black Hills and from the bayous of Reconstruction Louisiana to the palaces of Europe and Asia. Forsyth's varied military career was truly reflective of the army's role in the second half of the nineteenth century.

In addition to serving as an instrument of government Indian policy, the army carried out other important missions designed to foster internal development in the United States. These activities included exploring and mapping the remnants of the uncharted West: escorting railroad survey and construction crews and building forts along the major lines of commerce. As a staff officer, George Forsyth played an important part in all of these activities and more. Therefore, while this biography chronicles the life and military career of a remarkable soldier, it also provides fresh insight into the role that the United States Army played during the post-Civil War period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting biography of a career soldier

Although George A. Forsyth participated in 88 engagements as a soldier in the Civil War and later was in many fights with the Indians on the Plains, it was for one encounter with the Cheyenne and Sioux that he is remembered: the Battle of Beecher Island, where he and a small force held off 750 besieging Indians on a small island in the Arickaree Fork of the Republican River in present-day Colorado for six days before help arrived. David Dixon relates this famous battle in full detail, but he also tells us the rest of Forsyth's life, which is pretty full and interesting.

Forsyth was born in 1837 in Pennsylvania and entered the army in the spring of 1861. He rose in rank from private to brigadier general in various cavalry units in the Civil War before being made chief of staff for Gen. Philip Sheridan.

After the war Forsyth was put in charge of an operation against the Cheyenne. It was in September 1868 that he had his famous fight on Beecher Island (named after Lt. Frederick Beecher who was killed there by the Indians). Forsyth was wounded three times. One strategic outcome of the action on Beecher Island was that Sheridan from this time on would utilize only large-scale campaigns against the Indians (Forsyth had been in charge of a small ranger-like force).

Once again on Sheridan's staff, Forsyth was on the 1874 Custer expedition to the Black Hills, during which he kept a diary that was later published. In 1875-76 he was sent by Washington on an inspection tour of various armies in Europe and Asia. In the 1880s he was in the southwest campaigning against the Apaches and commanded Ft. Huachuca, AZ. It was here that Forsyth was court-martialed on money mismanagement charges, found guilty, and formally reprimanded. In 1890 he retired from the army. He authored two books which were published in 1900 and died in Rockport, MA, in 1915.

Dixon is an excellent writer, scholarly but not dry and overly academic. He is obviously impressed with Forsyth's accomplishments, but not to the point of hero-worship. He relates his subject's story in detail, but keeps it interesting. The chapter on the Beecher Island fight unfolds dramatically in Dixon's hands. Those who are interested in army life in the Old West will find much to like about his biography of the "hero of Beecher Island."

4-0 out of 5 stars Appealing to the scholar and the casual reader...
The "hero" in the title of David Dixon's Hero of Beecher Island is George A. Forsyth, an Army officer and Renaissance man who, Zelig-like, seemed to be involved with every matter of import in turn of the century America.Friend of Custer and Bill Cody, enabler of railroad expansion, renowned Indian fighter, shaper of US Army Policy, explorer of Yellowstone, world traveler, enforcer of Reconstruction, and popular author, Dixon paints a picture of a Da Vinci with a Sharps rifle.
There is much information contained within the book about the changing face of the US Army in which Forsyth served and later commanded.Dixon carefully details Forsyth's military experience. We begin to get a sense of what changes were going on in the Army during Forsyth's life. The evolution of the calvary under Forsyth's mentor Phil Sheridan is documented in chapter three "You Have Got A Bully Fight on Hand" (52).Dixon continues delving into this military biographia in chapter four, "I'll Shoot Down Any Man" (61).Although this chapter is mostly about the tense struggle of Beecher Island, the centerpiece of the book, it's what leads Forsyth to Beecher Island that stands as most interesting.Dixon brings out the idea that the railroad and the military were hand in glove in the old West, providing a late twentieth century reader to reflect on similarities between this paradigm of the Old West and the military-industrial complex of the Cold War era.Dixon infers a similar parallel at the beginning of chapter six, "The Armies of Asia and Europe" with the quote that the U.S. Army was, ". . . comparatively unknown, least appreciated, persistently misunderstood, and, for political effect, frequently misrepresented and occasionally even recklessly maligned in our national legislative hall" (122).The parallels to today's military are unmistakable.
In "I'll Shoot Down Any Man," Dixon relates the battle of Beecher Island well, describing Forstyth as an incredibly brave, capable, and stoic commander; the glue that kept his Army irregulars together under withering Indian attack. It's a story as old as the Greeks, but Dixon handles its retelling with a light touch, drawing the reader into the tension filled atmosphere.
Related in chapter eight,"To the Scandal of the Service" (168), Forsyth's fall from grace, brought about by shady business deals, is jarring.Forsyth's character needed to be more fully rounded out before the introduction of his court martial. Up to this chapter, there had beenno mention of possible improperties.Indeed, Forsyth had seemed squeaky clean, a devoted father, husband and officer.Worse, there's no discussion of how prevalent economic speculation was in the time period.Questions arise. Was it primarily a military crime? Was it a civilian problem as well? How was it seen in the "elite social classes"(169) that Army officers traveled in as second-class citizens? Dixon attempts to make the claim that Forsyth's head wound, sustained in the Beecher Island battle, had caused an insanity that made him mismanage his money. It seems odd, however, that the only way that this "madness" manifested itself was through bad business sense.Although Dixon writes, ". . . there is little doubt that Forsyth was. . . seriously afflicted with some mental disorder. . ." (186), from the evidence presented, the only mental disorder applicable seems to be greed and poor business sense.
Readers of Beecher Island are expected to have a good knowledge of turn of the century world history before picking up the book.Educated readers will be rewarded.Dixon tells a lucid story that is gripping at points and presented in a traditionally tragic style.Forsyth is portrayed as a great hero whose hubris eventually brings him low. However, a non-historian audience is bound to have problems. The book lacks contextualization of what was going on elsewhere in the world while Forsyth was shaping American culture. There's no sense of connectedness outside the biography, no asides that explain how Forsyth's opinion of the calvary compare to that of the calvary's place in the First World War.There's no sense of contradiction that a man helping to work for racial equality for Blacks in Reconstruction-era Louisiana could also help devise the Army's genocidal Indian policy.Dixon tosses around phrases like "The Burnt-Over District" (99) without defining them for the casual reader. He also has a tendency to not completely explain issues. In the chapter entitled, "The Armies of Asia and Europe," he mentions that Forsyth said that the Japanese army was 20 years ahead of anything in America but fails to explain why Forsyth thought so. (128) And finally, there's not enough convincing evidence to allow madness to explain the shoddy business speculation that brings Forsyth to end his life in shame.True, the book is a biography not a sociological study, but a man who was such a turn stone in such a far-reaching, influential part of American culture like the Old West, needs to be explored further for the non-professional historian.
Dixon accomplishes what he sets out to do in the title: explicating the life and military career of an important man.Perhaps with a different title, signifying a different focus, the book would have appealed to a wider audience. All of Forsyth's exploits are summed up in the words of an unidentified member of Forsyth's Yellowstone expedition. After Forsyth foolhardily attempted to ford a raging river and had to be pulled from it, someone said, "The colonel must have had a charmed life" (140).It is this charmed life, mated with Dixon's attention to detail and capable writing that could produce a Forsyth book that would appeal to both historian and casual reader alike.

Product Description
It is difficult to imagine anything more important to the human population than safe drinking water. Lack of clean drinking water is still the major cause of illness and death in young children in developing countries. In more fortunate communities, where water treatment is practiced, the primary aim of water authorities is to provide water that is free from pathogens and toxins. Most countries now have water quality regulations, or guidelines, which are driving water authorities to produce purer water, with the minimum of contamination from natural or man-made origin. At the same time, consumers are demanding that chemicals added during the treatment of drinking water be kept to a minimum. As a consequence, conventional clarification methods are being challenged to comply with the new regulations and restrictions and our understanding of the mechanisms involved is being tested as never before.

Interface Science in Drinking Water Treatment contains a rigorous review of water treatment practices from a fundamental viewpoint. The book includes material from leading experts in the field of water treatment, reviewing their specific fields of expertise against a background of colloid and surface chemistry, and examines each step of the journey from source to consumer tap. It therefore permits the reader to develop a deep understanding of the complex processes taking place and of the necessary treatments which are vital for the provision of safe and palatable drinking water. The book is aimed at researchers, educators and practitioners in science and engineering, particularly those involved in water treatment and colloidal chemistry.

· Covers all existing water treatment processes, approached from a fundamental surface and colloid scienceviewpoint
· Unique collection of R&D authors, all experts in water treatment processes
· Comprehensive review of water treatment with a complete list of references ... Read more
