While I'm happy that you have the Kindle version, I wanted to buy it as a book to gift to several friends in the education field. While it may seem obvious that children should be learning to process and think about what they are taught too often that is not the case. If every educator followed the principles set forth in this book, it would revolutionize education. Walter L. Faust, Ph.D ... Read more

Product Description
Once Fallen is a two part book giving both an eyewitness account and expert testimony of the negative consequences of the current direction of sex offender legislation. Current sex offender laws focus on retribution against Former Sex Offenders while neglecting the rehabilitation of registrants, and completely ignoring tried-and-true prevention and education measures that would greatly reduce criminal sexual behavior. Current sex offender legislation create barriers to the successful reintegration of individuals who have served out their sentences. In addition, these laws help propagate the myriad of myths and lies we believe about sex crimes and those who commit them.

Once Fallen follows the seven year journey of one man to overcome his past and live as a productive member of society. The law, an unforgiving society, and internal struggles stand in the way of a reformed life. The first half of this book chronicles this man's struggle for forgiveness in a society, overcoming insurmountable odds to atone for the sins of the past while offering hope for those facing similar personal mistakes.

The Second part of Once Fallen is the fruit of nearly a decade of research on the impact of sex offender laws. Sex offender legislation is very popular, yet have come with disastrous consequences for both the registrants living under the laws and the society that desires them. The laws have been proven largely ineffective while merely reinforcing stereotypes and myths about sex offenders. Vigilantism, social ostracism, and denial of basic needs are just a few of the negative consequences of the laws on the individual registrant. Such negative consequence give ample incentive to disobey these laws, as they ultimately punish mostly those who are rehabilitated and have no desire to recidivate.

The social consequences of these laws include failing to address the greater number of sex crimes which are committed by non-registrants, the dilution of the registries as a result of predator panic, and the perpetuating of a fear-based culture. This fear has led to hypersensitivity to sex crimes to the point laws intended for the "worst of the worst" are used against even non-sex crimes or behaviors once merely frowned upon, such as consensual teen sex. We have given up large amounts of personal and constitutional freedoms, and laws created against sex offenders are expanding into other criminal behavior, with the potential risk of punishing people based upon perceived risk alone.

Once Fallen gives you the truth behind the sex offender legislation and industry, giving you the facts you may not want to hear, but NEED to hear. As with many social panics in our society, there is money to be made in the sex offender industry, with billions of dollars at stake, leaving no desire from mass media, celebrity advocates, and legislators to tell the public the truth behind this ill-fated legislation.

Once Fallen offers a rational solution to a problem riddled with well-intentioned but failed legislation. The solution requires we think outside the box and approach the subject with an open mind.

Written by Derek Logue, advocate, webmaster at www.oncefallen.com, a critically acclaimed factual information site on sex offender topics and issues. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended
The first half of this book charts Logue's personal journey from his arrest, to his time in prison, to the time after his release living as a registered sex offender.

From what I gathered reading the first part of this book the man is no deviant. He is hardly radical nor dangerous. He's certainly not a pedophile. He does not try to justify his actions. He embraces Christianity and God. He fully believes what he did was wrong and all he wants is forgiveness and to be given a second chance at life, but our society shows very little mercy to sex offenders, even ones as harmless and pitiful as Logue; a lonely guy who made a very silly mistake early in life.

The author is a Christian and he does mention bible verses in various points through the first half of the book, but it is not directed at the reader, I did not feel like he was trying to convert me. He simply describes how religion played a role in his personal journey, mainly as a way of coping with life after his arrest.

The second half of the book is where all the juice is, all the research and facts that disprove all the popular myths about sex offenders peddled by the mainstream media and famous child advocates like John Walsh. The author does an excellent job of showing how ineffective the sexual registries and residential restrictions are and how incompetent politicians who pass these laws are.

It's unfortunate more people don't pay attention to this issue. It's in serious violation of human rights and the constitution. I'm sure we'll be reaching critical mass soon enough. As the author warns near the end of the book, we are headed down the same road as Nazi Germany. Our civil rights are being seriously deteriorated in the United States, with the least amount of resistance being shown here.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone
Once Fallen, is a must read for everyone. From parent to policy makers.
Derek does a superb job in communicating and documenting his findings.

His research is impeccable.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is for you
Just when you thought your life was safe and happy, one mistake can change everything.Derek Logue allows the reader to follow his life from the single worst moment a person may ever face, on through his treatment, recovery and religious awakening all with limited resources except for a immense drive to succeed.

Supporters and antagonists alike will not only take lessons from his journey, but learn the truth about former sex offenders, the law and daunting task of making one's way in the world when all the world is against you.

Once Fallen does not mean forever broken!

5-0 out of 5 stars the Truth shall set you free
I have a printed version of this book and I'm well into reading it.What is so good about it is that it is honest and very "telling" of what can happen with just ONE mistake in your lifetime and how it can ruin your life or make you stronger.

This kind of "shaming" of the former offender has to stop, I pray that all legislators and public officials will read this one because he has references and therefore "evidence" to prove what he is speaking about in his book.

Easy to read, had to make myself take a break from reading just to eat.Well written and I hope all of America will read it and learn the truth of what really is going on with all former offenders - no matter what they did.

It is also current, I like that. ... Read more

After the United States is broken up into several small nations, the portion of the continent still calling itself the U. S. A. converts their economic model so that their currency is backed by a class of Longevity drugs. These drugs lead to over-population which makes the colonization of Mars imperative and people must have enough Hours and Cents in their accounts to equal age thirty to stay on Earth. A new type of theft and fraud is created whereby the scammers try to drain people's accounts. This is bad enough, but vampires learn that the new drugs make it unnecessary for them to drink blood to live, and they wade into the new type of fraud wholeheartedly. Product Description
Derek Mahon is one of the leading poets of his time, both in Ireland and beyond, famously offering a perspective that is displaced from as much as grounded in his native country. From prodigious beginnings to prolific maturity, he has been, through thick and thin, through troubled times and other, a writer profoundly committed to the art of poetry and the craft of making verse. He has also been no-less a committed reviser of his work, believing the poem to be more than a record in verse, but a work of art never finished.

This virtuoso study by Hugh Haughton provides the most comprehensive account imaginable of Mahon's oeuvre. Haughton's brilliant writing always serves and illuminates the poetry, yielding extraordinary insights on almost every page. The poetry, its revisions and reception, are the subject here, but so thorough is the approach that what is offered also amounts indirectly to an intellectual biography of the poet and with it an account of Northern Irish poetry vital to our understanding of the times. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth An Afternoon
This is a great way to spend the afternoon if you are looking for an enjoyable read with characters you will care about. I agree with the earlier reviewer who stated that if you enjoy fiction in virtually any form you will likely enjoy this book with its many surprising revelations and sudden plot twists. It's a shorter novel and makes for an easy overall read. I didn't want to put it down. It's also a realistic look at the current Iraqi Freedom conflict.

The reason that I rated it four stars instead of five is because I felt that the theme of loss was a bit overdone to the point of being hysterically dramatic--anyone of the "instants" of tragedy would have been sufficient to change an individual's life forever, but added up collectively they became depressing. The last minute change from despair to hope comes up very quickly and is a bit disjointed--it read like the main character just suddenly "decided" to forgive and forget and then all of sudden his life was better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book from a first-time author
This book was one of those "read in one afternoon/evening" deals...I just COULD NOT put it down.It had a "realness"to it that is hard to pinpoint.I felt very connected with the main character from the start, even though we have almost nothing in common (other than loss of loved ones, and hope.)I don't read a lot of non-science-fiction fiction, so believe me when I say that this is one piece of fiction that almost ANY fiction-reader would enjoy. It's written in a rather "simple" everyday style...very easy to read, but REALLY sucks you in quick. It's themes of love and hope are universal. ...
