Chapters: Gruff Rhys, Christian Bale, Geraint Wyn Davies, Alexander Bland, Mark Delaney, Augustus Anson, Richard Summers, Simon Halliday, George F. Gibbs, Jamie Owen. Excerpt:Personal information Alexander "Alec" Frederick Bland (24 November 1866 18 October 1947) was a Welsh international rugby union forward who played club rugby for Cardiff . Bland won nine caps for Wales over a period of four years. International career Bland was first selected for Wales in a match against Scotland as part of the 1887 Home Nations Championship. Replacing Cardiff team mate George Avery Young , Bland was chosen to face England in the opening match of the tournament, under the captaincy of Newport's Charlie Newman . Although the match was to be played at Stradey Park in Llanelli , the game was moved to a nearby cricket ground as the English felt the original pitch was still frozen-over. The game ended in a nil-nil draw, the best the Welsh had so far achieved over the English. Bland kept his place for the next two games of the Championship, a loss away to Scotland; where Wales unsuccessfully trialed the four three-quarter syatem for the first time, and a win over Ireland, played at the neutral ground of Birkenhead Park in England. The 1888 Championship was played without England, after the team withdrew when their union fell out with their Scottish counterpart . Bland played in both games, which saw Wales win their first match over Scotland thanks to a Thomas Pryce-Jenkins try , but in a reversal of fortunes the very next match saw the Welsh lose to Ireland; the first victory for the Irish over Wales. Towards the end of 1888, Bland was selected for the Welsh game to face the touring New Zealand Natives played at St. Helen's Ground , Swansea . The Welsh players experienced a hostile home crowd during the m... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love that voice!
Just to expose my bias, let me just say that Gerain Wyn Davies could read a cookbook or the instruction manual to a refrigerator and I would buy it just to listen to his voice! This is an audio book filled with classic horror stories vocalized by a man trained in classic theatre. What more can you ask for?The stories come to life and Mr. Wyn Davies manages to make the stories suspenseful and haunting.I have only purchased 2 audio books and they were both Wyn Davies short story collections. If you like classic horror (Poe, etc.) and you love a beautiful voice, this is the audio book for you! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful narration
Is it just me or does Geraint Wyn Davies have one of the best voices in the business? The stories are great(they are classics for a reason) Geraint infuses each story with such skill you will
want to listen to them many times!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great voice, great stories
This audiobook contains classic horror/suspense stories from some of the best, most notably, Edgar Allan Poe.Geraint Wyn Davies does not just read the stories, he becomes the characters. His oration brings each story to life and his marvelous Welsh-Canadian accent is used to fullest potential to give life to these creepy tales.I listened to these tapes before bed, while getting ready for work and while driving long distances and they were entertaining and spooky every time. These were my first audiobooks and, with orators like Mr. Wyn Davies, they most certainly will not be the last!

4-0 out of 5 stars Classically Trained Makes a Difference
Davies' classical experience shows in his television work ("Forever Knight") and is put to even greater use in this audiobook. His commandof voice and atmosphere paints gothic pictures of Roderick Usher's doomedHouse or the living and dead occupants of Barwyke Hall (a little known workby J. Sheridan Le Fenu entitled "Dickon the Devil").Thisaudiobook must be listened to in the dark.It may be useful in literatureor performance classes as well, for the authors of the literature (AmbroseBierce, Robert Louis Stevenson, Washington Irving and others)are withoutdoubt some of the best and never lose their seductive darkness; and Davies'rich, passioned vocal work serves as an excellent guide for students tostudy. For more "mundane" purposes, the stories are brisk, chilly, and altogether creepy. Those of you who already own audio copiesof "Usher" and similar works ought to check this out just forcomparisons' sake; Davies does an excellent job. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars No better match for reading and voice
The stories are wonderfully written - and vividly told - by the original writers. Poe, Hawthorne, Bierce, Crawford and Chambers all do such wonderful things with words and storytelling, it's hard to imagine them being improved in any meaningful way.Enter Geraint Wyn Davies, classically trained actor.Born in Wales, raised in Canada and now living in L.A., this actor's vocal training is just the thing to enrich the words of such authors.

Mr. Davies' voice does exactly what he wants it to do - whether that's sidle up to sentence, pounce on it unexpectedly or pull the rich, deep undertones out in such a way as to make quite certain you'll not sleep at all after listening to his readings, this is a gift you'll enjoy over and over again.

Curl up by the fire with your favorite libation and a blanket for when the stories give you the chills and enjoy the dulcet tones of this rich and varied narration of some of the best of American Suspense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Geraint Wyn Davies (formerly of "Forever Knight" fame) narrates this collection of suspenseful, creepy classic stories in fine voice. He does excellent character voices in the reading that will give you chills down your spine.

Turn off the light, crank it up and prepare to be spooked! ... Read more
