Son nom complet est souvent écrit Declan Patrick Aloysius MacManus; pourtant, le nom Aloysius n'était pas un de ses prénoms de naissance, n'ayant été ajouté par Elvis Costello qu'à l'époque de la sortie de l'album King of America (en rapport avec le fait qu'Aloysius était l'un des noms du personnage joué par le comique Tony Hancock dans son émission Hancock's Half Hour). À cette époque, il se demandait en effet s'il n'allait pas abandonner son nom de scène au profit de son vrai nom.
