Product Description
This volume is a collection covering the diverse areas of psycholinguistics, syntax, computational linguistics and phonology. Abney's paper on Chunks provides an interesting new approach to phrase structure, motivated by psycholinguist data, something that is rarely done. Berwick and Fong provide a history of computational implementations of (Chomskyan) Transformational Grammar. Cole's phonology paper, arguing from Chamorro and English stress that cyclicity is not needed in phonology, is also preceded by a one-and-a-half-page introduction on why this is relevant to computation. Coleman's contribution summarises work on computational phonology and describes the York Talk speech synthesis system. Hirschberg and Sproat's paper describes a system they have written to assign pitch accent to unrestricted text in an RT&T text-to-speech system. This is very much applied natural language processing, but their system represents a more thorough-going attempt at doing this well than has been previously attempted, and this appears to be the first write-up of this work. Johnson and Moss introduce Stratified Feature Grammar, a formal model of language, inspired by Relational Grammar but formalised by using and extending tools developed in the unification grammar community. Finally, Nakazawa extends further Tomita's work so that computer science LR parsing methods can be applied to natural language grammars, here feature-based grammars. ... Read more

Female survivors share their personal stories of partner stalking, and the authors provide an extensive look at the latest stalking research providing readers with the new most relevant implications for practice and future research.

The book informs students, professionals, and researchers about:

Women's perceptions and definitions of stalking The health and mental health problems that co-occur with partner stalking and violent relationships Levels of stress caused by and/or exacerbated by partner violence and stalking Impacts on financial and employment status, social activities, and relationships Victims' access to the justice system and the growing need for better interventions by law enforcement and stronger policies and services to protect victims ... Product Description
The papers in this volume address a range of issues and problems in current phonological theory, examining many levels of phonological representation. The papers grew out of a conference held in May, 1991, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Department of Linguistics. The goal of the conference was to provide a forum for the discussion of some of the leading ideas and innovations in phonology today. Over one hundred researchers and students participated in presentations and lively debate. The conference imposed no single theme under which all of the papers were organised. ... Read more

Product Description
Child laborers in South Asia, child soldiers in Sierra Leone and Uganda, Chinese youth playing computer games to earn virtual gold, youth involved in sex trafficking in the former Soviet republics and Thailand: these are just some of the young people featured in the news of late. The idea that young people are more malleable and the truisms that "youth are the future" or "children are our hope for the future" give news stories and scholarly accounts added meaning. To address how and why youth and children have come to seem so important to globalization, the contributors to this book look at the both the spatial relations and the temporal dimensions of globalization in places as far apart as Oakland, California, and Tamatave, Madagascar, in situations as disparate as the idealization of childhood innocence and the brutal lives of street children. Discourses of, and practices by, youth and children, from the design of toys to political mobilization, are critical sites through which people everywhere conceive of, produce, contest, and naturalize the new futures. ... Product Description

A business card left behind by a regular in her restaurant intrigues Alayna Valerian. While visiting the Web site scrawled on the back, she finds herself submerged into the fetish world of BDSM. She learns the man who has been eating in her café for six months--and sets her libido on fire--is a Dominant, as well as co-owner of an establishment that teaches the art of mastery and submission. As her research deepens, she recognizes her submissive nature and decides the ruggedly, distinguished Logan Abram is the Dominant to show her the pleasures to be attained at the hands of the right man.

Logan Abram is a Dominant without a submissive. Five years ago, he walked away from the lifestyle to deal with a tragedy he had yet to come to terms with. Long-denied Dominant needs surge to the surface, demanding to claim the curvaceous co-owner of the eatery he frequents. Alayna Valerian's natural submissiveness calls to his Dom on a primal level. All of his control is threatened when Alayna arrives on his doorstep seeking to explore her submissiveness.

Publisher's Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: BDSM theme and content.

4-0 out of 5 stars Had to wait until the end of book for it to begin
I tend to agree with the other reviewer about the focus of this book. Alaynna couldn't experience sexual release. Then, she is paired with a Dom named Rick, who is engaged to another woman, who wants to help her achieve orgasm through masturbation. Rick isn't even allowed to touch her because Logan won't allow it. This leads to the viewer becoming frustrated at Logan for not being her trainer to begin with. The main reason Alaynna accepts the invitation by Logan's friend and partner, Dane, is to learn about her submissive nature and to learn how to achieve orgasm. She wants Logan to teach her about her body's responses, not Rick. Plus, a sub is supposed to pick/chose her Dom. She isn't even sexually attracted to Rick to begin with, which makes the reader roll their eyes at the stupidity of that pairing.

Logan is a man tormented by a past Dom/s relationship that went bad. The sub wanted Logan to push her beyond his ethical boundaries and enter into activities that put her in danger. A true Dom would never put his sub in danger, so he breaks up with her. After their breakup, he blames himself when she dies from her bizarre sexual act, at the hands of an inexperienced younger man, who has no knowledge of this kind of sexual "play". I put play in quotes because I don't consider being asphyxiated as play. Too much risk involved.

While the writing is written intellectually, the reader had to wait until the end of the book, before they got a taste of Logan and Alyanna exploring their sexual passion.

I was teteringabout giving this book a three star. I would give it a 3.5 because the ending made up for the beginning, with the exception of Logan and Alyanna not having time to reach higher levels of sexual exploration and play. Too much time was spent with Logan's internal struggle and guilt from his past. It made the book drag on.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book 1 of 2
Very light and quick read. The story took a long time to develop and really wasn't nearly as juicy as the synopsis leads readers to believe.Rather than a story about Alayna, a woman being trained in bdsm by Logan, her ideal dom, it had a huge focus on Alayna not being able to orgasm and her trainer (not Logan) being very reluctant to train her except through a hands off approach. The book finally started to heat up in chapter 11.There are 13 chapters in the book.

The book would've been better entitled "An Invitation - Book One: Alayna's Training" because"An Invitation: Ariel's Pet" by Qwillia Rain is book two.Alayna and Ariel are sisters and both books take place simultaneously and contain two identical passages.IMO Ariel's pet was much better than Alayna's Training but I think both books would've been much better if co-written into one book. ... Product Description
How do designers get ideas? Many spend their time searching for clever combinations of forms, fonts, and colors inside the design annuals and monographs of other designers' work. For those looking to challenge the cut-and-paste mentality there are few resources that are both informative and inspirational. In Graphic Design: The New Basics, Ellen Lupton, best-selling author of such books as Thinking with Type and Design It Yourself, and design educator Jennifer Cole Phillips refocus design instruction on the study of the fundamentals of form in a critical, rigorous way informed by contemporary media, theory, and software systems.

Through visual demonstrations and concise commentary, The New Basics shows students and professionals how to build interest and complexity around simple relationships between formal elements of two-dimensional design such as point, line, plane, scale, hierarchy, layers, and transparency. The New Basics explains the key concepts of visual language that inform any work of design from a logo or letterhead to a complex web site. It takes a fresh approach to design instruction by emphasizing visually intensive, form-based thinking in a manner that is in tune with the latest developments in contemporary media, theory, art, and technology. Colorful, compact, and clearly written, The New Basics is the new indispensable resource for anyone seeking a smart, inspiring introduction to graphic design and destined to become the standard reference work in design education. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy I am Satisfied
I recieved exactly what I ordered, for the right price, and on time. Best of all,it is a book that is detailed, but not to complex.
Thank you.

1-0 out of 5 stars At least the title wasn't The ABCs of Graphic Design
I bought this book sight unseen, based on the authors' reputations and the mostly good reviews. Sorry to say it, but the textual content of this book is the verbal equivalent of bad stick figure drawings badly layed out. I can only conclude that right-brained graphics-oriented people shouldn't be allowed to explain what it is they do. For me, this book has too many statements that are so abstractly vague or universally applicable as to be meaningless, plus a fair share of contradictory statements, some within a paragraph and others within even a single sentence.

Zooming out, if you are looking to this book for cohesive, practical guidelines for implementing these "New Basics", look no further than the back cover where you'll find the chapter names listed, each of which represents a basic graphic design element. Then go out and analyze some award-winning designs with these chapter titles in mind. The example designs reproduced in the book seem to be mostly a showcase for the works of the authors' students. I found many of them quite pleasing, and since they made it into the book, I assume they are "good design". Based on what I learned from the text, I can't really say.

5-0 out of 5 stars Used Books/Great Deals
Buying used books makes sense. This book arrived in a timely manner and in good condition at a fraction of the cost.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was very disappointed in this book. Given the title, I expected more cohesive guidelines and analysis on assembling the "New Basics" into my designs. To me, it was primarily a showcase of work done by the authors' students, some of which I enjoyed, but I didn't find it very helpful or insightful. In fact, I returned it for a refund.

Also, I found some of the type so small as to be unreadable, which for experienced designers, I found surprising. Not high on my list, obviously. I expect a title and/or subtitle to deliver on its implied promise. Perhaps I totally misunderstood the intent of the book, but I expected something that would weave these so-called new basics into a whole, provide direction, and help me produce better designs. Maybe that happens over the course of time in class, but I didn't see that happening in the book.

If you're looking for guidance and direction, I don't think this is the book for you. It wasn't for me. ... Read more

Product Description
This book contains a selection of papers presented at the 9th Conference on Laboratory Phonology, which was held in June 2004 at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The theme of the conference was Change in Phonology, broadly conceived as to include both language evolution at the level of the speech community and development within the individual speaker/hearer. The chapters in this book are organized in five sections: phonological variation and change within the speech community, mechanisms of change in sound systems, phonological acquisition from different experimental perspectives, second language phonology, modeling of language variation, and segmental and suprasegmental phenomena related to the timing of speech gestures. These topics are explored from a number of perspectives, both within and outside of traditional linguistics. We believe that the papers included in this volume demonstrate that the Laboratory Phonology approach has reached maturity and has succeeded in its aim not only to bridge the gap between phonetics and phonology but also to establish a fruitful and mutually beneficial dialog between linguists and other scientists and scholars concerned with the study of the sound patterns of human language from different perspectives. ...
