Excerpt: Paul Murphy Shirley (born December 23, 1977) is an American professional basketball player, most recently a member of Unicaja Málaga in the Spanish ACB. He is also a writer, with his primary focus on his basketball experiences. Shirley is noted for briefly maintaining an online journal while playing for the Phoenix Suns in 2004-05. His first journal dealt with a several-day-long road trip, while the second chronicled the Suns' NBA Playoffs run. After their playoff elimination, the Suns did not re-sign him, as he rarely played in his twelfth man position. He was the author of a blog for ESPN.com entitled "My So-Called Career". Shirley was signed to a non-guaranteed contract by the Minnesota Timberwolves in early October, but was cut in training camp before the start of the 2006-07 season. On an ESPN.com chat on October 23, Shirley referenced the $10 million, 5-year contract of Mark Madsen as the reason why he was released. Shirley's blogs at ESPN and elsewhere contained observations on players, teams, fans, cities, sports media, cheerleaders, the game of basketball, and topics outside the athletic sphere. He commented on topics such as the USA Patriot Act, which he condemned as " the US on a fast-track to an Orwellian destiny". His writing garnered attention from national sports media, as well as other outlets such as Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, and the British Broadcasting Corporation. Shirley's first book, entitled Can I Keep My Jersey?, was released on May 15, 2007 from Random House.. A paperback version of the book was released on December 26, 2007. Product Description
The Human Brain Book is a complete guide to the one organ in the body that makes each of us what we are - unique individuals. It combines the latest findings from the field of neuroscience with expert text and state-of-the-art illustrations and imaging techniques to provide an incomparable insight into every facet of the brain. Layer by layer, it reveals the fascinating details of this remarkable structure, covering all the key anatomy and delving into the inner workings of the mind, unlocking its many mysteries, and helping you to understand what's going on in those millions of little gray and white cells.

Tricky concepts are illustrated and explained with clarity and precision, as The Human Brain Book looks at how the brain sends messages to the rest of the body, how we think and feel, how we perform unconscious actions (for example breathing), explores the nature of genius, asks why we behave the way we do, explains how we see and hear things, and how and why we dream.Physical and psychological disorders affecting the brain and nervous system are clearly illustrated and summarized in easy-to-understand terms.

The unique DVD brings the subject to life with interactive elements. These include a clickable model of the brain's structure that allows the user to zoom in and discover deeper layers of detail, while complex processes, such as the journey of a nerve impulse, are broken down and simplified through intuitive animations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
I'll make this short and sweet: I highly recommend that you buy this book! I have a slew of brain anatomy books ("The Human Brain Coloring Book," "Neuroanatomy: Text and Atlas," "Brain Architecture: Understanding the Basic Plan," "Neuroanatomy: Draw it to know it," "High-Yield Neuroanatomy," etc., etc. -- you get the picture) that I have ordered over the past few years in my cursory attempt to help me better understand and visualize brain structures (well, also... I'm a book junkie). This book is by far the best, and most useful, of all the books I have on my shelves. You will not be disappointed!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Detailed and Fascinating!
This book is one of the most beautiful scientific books I have ever read.I am reading it for a master's degree course and I have to say at times I feel like I'm watching a great program on the Discovery channel instead of reading for a class. The images, the color, the format of the book are all what make this book interesting, engaging and informative.Wow, do you learn a lot! Sometimes, I feel like I'm studying to be a neurosurgeon, which I'm not.Get this book, you wont regret it, its a great reference, coffee table book or research tool!!

5-0 out of 5 stars brain!
Arrived fairly quickly, beautiful book with nice big, colorful pictures, in brand new condition! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars review of Human Brain
This is an excellent book.It is very thorough and pleasant to read. The drawings are creative and clear. The dvd alone is worth the money. This is the way to learn brain anatomy and function!I say thank you to the author.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good, but loaded with errors
I found too many errors in this book to give it five stars, but at the same time, it is put together so well and covers too much material to give it just three stars.

Here are the errors I was able to find:

*The diagram on page 58 mistakes an Internal globus pallidus for an External globus pallidus

*On page 60, it incorrectly states that the auditory cortex is represented by Brodmann areas 40 and 41 while it should be Brodmann areas 41 and 42.

*On page 115, the color coded projections of the cerebellar circuits to and from the pimary motor cortex are wrong.

*On page 116 it incorrectly stated that the red nucleus is in the superior colliculus.Furthermore, it incorrectly indicates that the pons is the inferior colliculus.

*On page 135, the superior temporal gyrus is called a superior temporal sulcus. The same error is made on page 142 as well.

These are very serious errors and no book on the brain should contain this many blatant errors.I know the book was not written by a neuroscientist, but whoever the neuroscientist was who reviewed her work did not do a very good job.The only other thing in this book is that I don't think the section on memory explains neuroplasticity very well.I've read quite a few other books written by neuroscientists such as Robert Sapolsky and Joseph LeDoux who do a much better job explaining this and use more concise diagrams.

The included DVD which shows brain scan images, the anatomy of the brain as well as the different Brodmann areas and a short video on how neurons fire is excellent.

Product Description
A Very Short, Fairly Interesting and Reasonably Cheap Book about Studying Strategy is a welcoming, lively, and thought provoking account of strategy. It helps students get to grips with strategy’s key issues and broad debates and introduce them to the latest ideas that won’t yet have been covered in the classroom. Organized into three sections, concepts are made really accessible as the authors first recap the history of strategy as an academic discipline, then evaluate major schools of strategic thought, and conclude by critiquing the latest developments in strategic research. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars psycho-sexual history of fascist men. Classic
Klaus Theweleit's two-volume study, Male Fantasies (Meinnerphantasien), might be described as a psycho-sexual history of fascist male desire in Germany from its inception in the aftermath of World War 1. Theweleit seems especially informed by the psychoanalytic paradigms of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, insofar as their work, like Theweleit's, consistently emphasises the productive force of fantasy or the unconscious in relation to the material world and its sociopolitical formations. Stylistically, Male Fantasies is made up of textual fragments -- diaries, memoirs, letters, works of fiction, visual art -- which, although historically and culturally specific, are not presented in a stable or overarching historical, narrative or theoretical framework. Instead, Theweleit's text suggests affinities or connotations between symbolic and bodily practices, material production and fantasy, which are not limited to a given historical moment, but which, arguably, maintain both resonance and relevance today.
According to Theweleit it is through the body, and the discourses of the body, that fascist desires (and anxieties) take their sociopolitical formations and effects. The threat to the soldier male of bodily dissolution and collapse is played out, or in psychoanalytic terms, projected onto the bodies of its others -- notably those of women, Jews, communists, the proletariat, homosexuals, and other marginalised groups, who can thus be subjected and annihilated in fantasy -- if not in reality. The extracts reprinted here illustrate the brutalising symbolic practices and fantasies by which the soldier male's 'armoured' body is structured and impelled to action.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable companion to Volume One
Where "eros" was covered in the first volume, the second deals with the thanatos, or death urge. Particularly interesting isThewelveit's treatment of the "soldier's blackout," a synapse frying climax of inner psychological tension resulting fromextended periods of drilled formation. An invaluable companion to Volume One, though less interesting in that Vol. I was(IMHO) a revolutionary reformulation and synthesis of many of the insights of Reich, wheras this volume merely elaborates onthe (not so obvious) conclusions.

4-0 out of 5 stars An innovative feminist critique of fascist Literature.
This second volume of Theleweit's ground-breaking examination of proto-fascist 'Freikorps' novels spans disciplinary lines by examining historical documents from a unique combination of feminist and psychological perspectives. While the text is intellectually weighty, Theleweit manages to avoid the verbal dryness inherent in the subject. His thesis is outrageous, illuminating and largely coherent.A must read for aspiring academics and cultural historian ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Provocative Read!
A wonderful collection of short stories about kids who are "outsiders" which can facilitate some great discussions both in the home and in the classroom. The stories are written by well-known YA authors and many readers, both old and young, will easily relate to the universal situation of those in the "in-group" versus those "on the fringe."

5-0 out of 5 stars Outsiders
Current authors write in response to the tragedies of Columbine and Santana high schools. From their perspectives, you can actually empathize with those teens who see no other way out than violence and self-destruction. Quite amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read for open minds
I'm actually 18, I just didn't feel like signing in so I used the kid review.

Anyways, I love this book. I bought it in junior high when I was a teased outcast and it helped me cope. But even without the personal attachement, On the Fringe is simply a good set of short stories. Most people would think the stories are the typical school shooter, wimpy-geek-with-glasses, anti-jock stories but there's a good amount of variety. Granted, it does have the stereotypes I described but it also has stories from people who are not necessarily considered to be on the fringe but do consider themselves to be out of the norm in some way. For example, the first story is about a popular young girl who thinks interviewing the outcasts for the school paper would do them a favor and show some compassion. The story travels with her to reveal some harsh truths and psychological growth. Another is about a young, average teen contemplating over the suicide of a friend. Yet another is about a girl who is somewhat popular and the kinds of insecurities that she deals with. Other stories deal with sexuality, being Christian, different cultural aspects, and just plain feeling left out and bullied.

The subject matter is intriguing but the thing about On the Fringe is the set of authors. They did a magnificient job of creating psychological and observational insight and growth. These are not simply stories about events among outside kids, they go into the depths of feelings, thoughts, and progress of those involved in such situations; that's why it's a great book. We already know what's going on among these kids, what we need to open our eyes to are the why's, who's, and how's of these situations.

And concerning another review, I would question the significance of an education major who can't spell "unnecessary", doesn't know the differencebetween "fowl" and "foul" and wants to shield teenage students from bad language. On the Fringe doesn't use any more foul language than any other book and certainly not anything young teens and kids haven't already heard, used, or been subjected to.

4-0 out of 5 stars The War At School
There is a war going on in our schools. Although many people may not see it or many people may not be aware of it the war is there I'm talking about the on going fighting between "outcasts" and the "populars". Through some tragic events, some heart warming, and some that just want to make you stand up to anyone who gets in your way you see the realities of violence and harshness of some lives which are the victims of this so called war. Through theses collections of short stories with authors such as Jack Gantos many lessons can be learned. It is a book that will make think about the kids at your school and events that have happened in your community that have taken place I this book. Maybe this book may change the way you think and make you a better person.
One of these short stories by Chris Crutcher is "Guns For Geeks." In this story Gene Taylor has always been the "outcast" at school. When he was young he was beaten in front his class for smarting off to the teacher Mr. Dickenson at their Christmas party. As he went on through school his troubles went on he was even yelled at when he had to give a statement in front of the student body! The main characters in this story are Sam and T.J. They are Mr. Beemer's class and are taking about guns in school but little do they know Gene Taylor is going to turn this lesson into first hand view of what death is like.
Through these shocking and horrible happenings, Sam and T.J. are forced to be heroes. Sometimes lessons can be learned through the most horrible experiences you could ever think of. Chris Crutcher does an excellent job at this by going through the troubles of boy's life. Who lashes out at all those people who thought was quiet and never thought anything of him. It shows that everything can change in the blink of an eye.
This book is great for any student who loves comedy, action, tragedy, and drama. This book has it all with the amazing short stories that are collected within the book. It is a great read and I highly recommend this book to anyone students or adults' whom are just looking for a good easy read. I love this book and I think it is fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Sharing
I used selections from this collection as read-alouds for my 8th grade language arts class (I end class most days with a read-aloud, while students keep a response journal). Because of the subject matter, these stories definitely engage the students and keep their attention. Do they all "get" the message? No, but I guarantee that when you look around the room and see the eyes of those two or three students who are themselves on the fringe, you will know it was worth it. ... Read more

Product Description
Reflecting our world in a uniquely haunting way, The X-Files has engendered a new look of mystery, conspiracy, phenomenon, and fear. These enigmatic, elusive images have had a profound and compelling impact on our visual reality, both feeding into and drawing from mainstream America's fascination with the subversive, the disowned, and the disillusioned. This innovative volume, a visual response to Chris Carter's dark, uneasy creation, collects the works of more than sixty cutting-edge artists.

Representing a cross section of contemporary visual arts, these photographers, painters, scultptors, graphic designers, and digital media artists have produced works that reflect their personal interpretation of The X-Files: as a cultural phenomenon, as a new chapter in television history, as an engrossing cosmic conspiracy. Many pieces are accompanied by a statement from the artist, explaining the inspiration behind his or her contribution--ranging from an episode to a line of dialouge, form a particular incident to a theme within the entire series. Illustrated with video stills from the episodes, this volume shows the strong influence of The X-Files imagery on the artistic mind.

In this introduction to this powerful collection of images, acclaimed writer William Gibson noted that The X-Files "is a disturbing and viscerally satisfying expression of where we've come from, where we are today, and all those places we simultaneously yearn and dread to go." Starling, beautiful, and thought-provoking, this unusual volume expands the creative vision of The X-Files, and of contemporary art itself. ... Read more

Most of the art is compelling but repulsive at the same time.View only if you are a fan of the grotesque.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art Files
This is an awesome book for real X-Files fans because it shows a little of the truth behind the show. What I mean is, while there's some aspects of horror to it and a lot of surreal stuff, it also pokes fun at itself and the stars in a genuine way that makes you feel like the people behind the scenes are willing to let you explore things from their perspective a little. The pictures are thought-provoking each in their own way and you can pick up on things you didn't see before each time you go through them. It's a very nice book and would make a nice gift for any fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Pics. . . . .
Unfortunately, This book is not your well known X-Files Guide book that we've all grown to Love. If you love Art, and meaning Freaky Art, then this is your book to own. But on a lighter note there are Scully, and Mulder pics. for your enjoyment. Fortunately for myself, I Love unique art, and X-Files is definitely covered under that category. I found it interesting to go into the minds of these very talented artists; to immerse myself into their subconsciously Talented works; In a way looking through their eyes at how they view The X-Files ((who knows, maybe even their own lives)). There are notes for each picture, and descriptions of what inspired the artist to Paint, draw, snap pollaroids or mold out of clay their creation. This book, so to call it, was very interesting. It showed creativity, and a darker side of the x-files as represented by the viewer. If you like art, this is a must buy, if not, I wouldn't recomend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Remaindered city, four months tops - lower than 1 star -zero.
Positive proof that ordering a book before it's published is really stupid. This isn't the Art of the X-Files, introduced by William Gibson (maybe William Gobson would have been a better influence). It's a bunch of X-files images interspersed with melodramatic "art" and groaner explications. "The creative act takes another aspect when the spectator experiences the phenomenon of transmutation; through the change from inert matter into a work of art, an actual transubstantiation has taken place, and the role of the spectator is to determining the weight of the work on the esthetic scale." Oh, please. There are also lots of very large images of the title mottos. Do you really need a two-page color spread of the words "Everything Dies" (one page, necessarily, is just plain black), or, too appropriately, "Deceive Inveigle Obfuscate"?Trust no one.I'm waiting for the apology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How It All Started
Even the most avid fan needs a road map to the X-Files (I know I do!).I have been a fan since the very first episode and I own all the episode guides, all seasons on video tape, all seasons on DVD and various other books and magazines....so, it is safe to say that I like the X-Files.This is definitely a book for the X-Files fan!It has all of season 1 and 2 with a detailed synopsis for each episode...including important dialogue quotes. It has great photographs also to accompany the stories. You could easily understand what's going on just from reading this book....it's also good as reference when something happens in later episodes that you didn't understand, to go back and find out who, why and what.

It also has all of the awards the show had won during those seasons.Well worth the money and makes a good collectible item!

If you think you might like to consider a career in public speaking, first learn from the best! Wouldn’t you like to know how often top speakers present and what their typical fee is? How do they keep their business growing? Do they use a publicist? What creative ways have they found to utilize the internet and social media to more effectively sell themselves and their products? Some of their answers may surprise you. Why do some speakers recommend lessons in acting, comedy, and improv? What are they doing now, that they wish they had started sooner? Want to hear about their most humbling or embarrassing moments while speaking? How is the profession changing with the proliferation of webinars and video conferencing?

Time to turn to the masters for all of the answers!

Episode #1 features Chris Cox of Amplitude LLC, and below is an excerpt from her interview:

Q. What percent of your week do you spend booking speaking engagements?
A. I don’t spend much time purely booking or selling. Much of my work is with repeat clients or through referrals from clients. I’m truly blessed to have a strong client base. I work about 55-60 hours a week. I spend between 10-15 hours per week in the exploratory and sales process. And 20-25 hours are spent creating the content for the work that I do. On average, I spend 30 hours per week delivering the content and traveling.

Q. What do you attribute your success to?
A. I think there are two factors: being willing to do the hard work, and doing what I love and feel passionate about. The hard work for me is in the preparation, it’s creating the presentation, the quality that sells itself the next time. It’s everything but the speech or the workshop itself.

What I see happening a lot in new speakers, is their inability to do the hard work leading up to the talk. I think people get enamored with being in front of an audience and think they can jump right into this line of work, but there’s so much work that goes on ahead of the presentation! ... Read more

Nine plays make up this collection of dramatic works developed and premiered by the Obie Award winning Ma-Yi Theater Company in New York.Throught its plays, the company brings to the table of Asian American discourse an alternative view of the savage. 5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Book (even if you're not a basketball lover).
This book is awesome. It talks about the past and present of a game they call "basketball."And, if you're a basketball lover, or you like watching basketball on TV, this is the book for you.It hasdirectories of the front-office (like the GM) of each team and it hasschedules of every game of every team. This is an awesome book, but if youjust "hate" basketball, just get a biography of some famousbasketball player and read it.You don't have to do whatever I say, but itworks.I tried it on my sister. She hates basketball and I gave her abiography and she loved it.I also tried it on a couple of my friends.Itworks on them too.I also wouldn't get the book if you hate numbers. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Demolition of Pseudoskepticism
Chris Carter is to be congratulated, without a doubt this is the most thorough and well researched book on the subject of parapsychology and the skeptic movement.I use the word skeptic movement quite carefully because I myself am a skeptic in the original sense of the word. That is to say but I'm skeptical of reports of the paranormal but equally skeptical of scientific theory that has no measurability.Ad Ernst Mach once said if its not measurable its Metaphysics, multiple worlds, singularities, and string theory have as much to be skeptical about as telepathy if you are a true sceptic.

After years of studying various scientific investigations into the subject of parapsychology and scientifically anomalous events have come to the conclusion that there is no question that these events occur.I am not totally convinced of any specific explanation for why they occur, which is why they are still anomalous. However, any open-minded person who reviews the data can only come away with a strong sense of forces operating beyond our current deterministic scientific explanations.

It is a very sad thing That the Reductionist, materialists true believers have hijacked the word skeptic. There is nothing skeptical at all about the likes of Michael Schermer, Paul Kurtz, and the motley crew of prestidigitatiors and academic vigilantes that call themselves skeptics. These people have more in common with Thomas deTorquemada the Grand Inquisitioner than they do to David Hume.

Mr. Carter's book systematically points out the evidence supporting parapsychological studies, and the fallacious reasoning and sophistry of the CSICOP community. There are several good books on the paranormal or parapsychology but this one is definitely the best a,covering the full range of the arguments.I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars A landmark work
I must express my delight with philosopher Chris Carter's PARAPSYCHOLOGY AND THE SKEPTICS. No one has presented a more convincing case for the scientific status of psi in such a concise book.It is a pleasure to see such a methodical, rigorous argument in any field, in which the author displays a comprehensive command of the history and experimental evidence of his subject.Carter analyzes the stale, recycled arguments of skeptics that have changed little in a century, and he demolishes them with surgical precision.

It is no wonder that there are howls of protest in a few of the customer reviews of his book that have been posted on the amazon.com site. Some of these contrarian reviewers seem not to have even read Carter's book.Their uninformed platitudes and sweeping condemnations remind one of the folk saying,"The hit dog howls."(As one so-called skeptic said of psi, "This is the sort of thing I would not believe, even if it were true.")These scolds seem programmed to "just say no" to any evidence favoring psi -- which, as Carter compellingly shows, is overwhelming to nearly anyone who approaches the field with an open mind.

The two points Carter makes that stand out for me are: (1) the perennial contention that there are no careful psi experiments that have been replicated is simply false; the ganzfeld studies and the presentiment experiments are but two examples among many; and (2) the time-worn contention that psi violates contemporary laws in physics is simply not true.Carter makes both points with withering precision.

My own field is medicine, in which psi figures heavily in certain situations, such as in the precognition of upcoming health challenges and threats, and in the remote effects of healing intentions. There is significant clinical and experimental evidence supporting both phenomena, as detailed in my books HEALING WORDS, REINVENTING MEDICINE, and THE POWER OF PREMONITIONS. I have never met a pseudo-skeptic who has even read all the relevant studies and systematic analyses in the healing field, yet this does not prevent them from trumpeting their objections to the role of psi in healing. This so-called skeptical stance is traitorous to the venerable tradition of genuine skepticism in science, which involves a suspension of belief/disbelief until the facts are acknowledged and fairly assessed. The "just say no" approach, as well as the uncritical "just say yes" attitude, are merely concealed bigotry and prejudice.

C. D. Broad, the Cambridge philosopher of science, in his 1962 "Lectures in Psychical Research," said, "And anyone who at the present day expresses confident opinions, whether positive or negative, on ostensibly paranormal phenomena, without making himself thoroughly acquainted with the main methods and results of the careful and long-continued work may be dismissed without further ceremony as a conceited ignoramus."

Broad's view still applies.Advice to both the uncritical cheerleaders and the pseudo-skeptics of parapsychology:to avoid the status of ignoramus, read Chris Carter's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent rebuttal to hyper-skeptics
Anybody who says that Carter should have included "peer reviewed journal references" has not read this book. In fact, Carter *does* provide such references. This is a thorough book that covers historical cases, modern research, and the psychodynamics of hyper-skepticism.

Carter argues for the reality of psi phenomena by discussing the nature of statistics, the early experimental work on telepathy by the Rhines, PK research with RNGs, the Ganzfeld debate (mostly between Honorton and Hyman), and even unexpected replications by skeptics themselves (including Richard Wiseman's replication of Sheldrake's dog-telepathy research). But Carter is fair, and readily discusses objections made by the skeptics, including objections by Ray Hyman and Susan Blackmore.

Aside from those issues, Carter also discusses philosophical questions (such as mind-body dualism and whether we have free will - the former will be discussed more in Carter's next book), quantum physics and its possible relationship to psi, the nature and definition of "science", whether or not Parapsychology is a legitimate scientific endeavor, whether psi effects contradict current models of science, theories of psi, the root and sociology of hyper-skepticism (which Carter links to the now-outdated mechanistic science of Newton), the opinions of various eminent scientists, amazing concessions made by certain skeptics (including Susan Blackmore), and other issues. Carter also convincingly argues that some of the main media skeptics (such as James Randi) have publicly mischaracterized data.

This book is also filled with fascinating gems that you won't find in most other books on the subject. Here's one example of an interesting bit of info. Abraham Lincoln had a dream about being assassinated 13 days before his death, and wrote about is 3 days before his death. General Ulysses Grant and his wife were supposed to accompany Lincoln to the theatre, but shortly before the show (and before Lincoln's death) Mrs. Grant began feeling an intense urgency to leave town lest something bad happen. They later discovered that the two of them were on the assassin's hit list! Of course, this case does not prove precognition, but it's certainly very interesting. The book has several of these fascinating gems, apart from the solid data - the meat of Carter's case comes from actual peer-reviewed data.

In a postscript, Carter says that his book was originally a massive book arguing for postmortem survival. However, the book would have been too long, and so Carter decided to do a series. This book is part 1, and two other books will be published. The next two books will deal with the question of (evidence for and objections against) survival.

- Criticisms -

This book is hard to criticize, but there are a few shortcomings in my estimation. First, Carter's discussion on D.D. Home is too brief and doesn't compete with Stephen Braude's extended discussions on Home. Carter doesn's even mention Braude's work, which is odd because Braude has offered one of the most compelling defenses of Home's physical mediumship. And why doesn't Carter discuss (or even mention) Home's impressive accordion experiment with the physicist Sir William Crookes?

Carter also fails to discuss studies on fMRI and EEG correlations (by Radin, Standish, and others) and presentiment work by Radin and Bierman (Carter does mention that Bierman applied for James Randi's million-dollar prize by offering to do presentiment work; there were a few exchanges and Bierman was asked to wait, but Bierman claims he never heard back from Randi again).

But these are minor problems that don't undermine the book's high quality. This is a must-own!

1-0 out of 5 stars Skepticism is correct here
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence --- that's the concept that "paranormal investigators" fail to understand.Anecdotes and one-off cases don't constitute grounds for overturning everything we know about how the universe works.Scientists are not "suppressing" evidence of magic. If real, replicable evidence were found it would instantly become a huge story in science journals.Until then, believers in psychic powers will have to go on living in their own fantasy world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Groundbreaking Expose of Unhealthy Skepticism
This is an extremely important book that examines a pervasive prejudice and pre-judgment that permeates science and many other fields of inquiry.

Healthy skepticism is an essential pre-requisite for good science, but as this delightful and well-reasoned book shows, parapsychology can bring out the worst kind of unhealthy - and unscientific - skepticism. It also highlights the way in which some scientists and popular science writers have used polemic rather than reasoned debate to promote their views. For example the opinion that all human ills can be reduced to genetics, or that there is but one interpretation of quantum mechanics. This is a trend that has been questioned by many scientists who have no connection with research in parapsychology.

Throughout my career I have seen how the mere mention of psychic phenomena such as telepathy would incite derision or apoplectic disgust amongst my professors, colleagues and many of my own students. Yet as this book shows, these reactions have more to do with personal and cultural attitudes and beliefs than they do with objective data.

After an excellent and thought-provoking foreword by Rupert Sheldrake, the book is broken into three parts and eighteen chapters:

1: Origins of the Debate
2: The Modern Critics
3: The Historical Evidence

Part I
Is there Conclusive Experimental Evidence for Psi?
4: The Early Years
5: Psychokinesis: mind over matter
6: Telepathy: silent communication
7: The Great Ganzfeld Debate
8: The Research of the Skeptics

Part II
Would the Existence of Psi Contradict Established Science?
9: The Roots of Disbelief
10: Modern Science versus Classical Science
11: The 'Extraordinary Claims' of Parapsychology
12: Psi and Physics
13: Towards a New World View

Part III
Is Parapsychology a Science?
14: The Impoverished State of Skepticism
15: The Nature of Science
16: The Scientific Status of Parapsychology
17: Hume's Argument Revisited
18: Paradigms and Parapsychology

These chapters are followed by a Postscript, Chapter Notes, a well-rounded Bibliography and an Index.

Carter uses many examples to support his thesis that rather than using science, many of the detractors of parapsychology use rhetoric and obfuscation. For instance the late Martin Gardner once claimed that the only evidence for parapsychology comes from a small group of enthusiasts, while negative evidence comes from a much larger group of skeptics. Not so, says Carter, who could find only three credible skeptical researchers. This is at least an order of magnitude less than the number who has produced positive data in peer-reviewed journals.

This is an important book that shows us the true nature and value of healthy skepticism and the dangers of wrongly associating it with mere disbelief. It is a good read, not only for people interested in parapsychology, but also for anyone interested in the way in which there are powerful forces that try to crush unorthodox ideas or concepts, including holistic health and integral perspectives on science, psychology, ecology and spirituality. It

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth It
I really don't like it, as someone has pointed out, it's pretty much just a big map with the location of where the X-Files has once taken place. It's kind of pointless, and I felt that I wasted a lot of money on it. I thoughtit would be better, but I was disappointed.
