Excerpt: Thomas Carlyle (4 December 1795 5 February 1881) was a Scottish satirical writer, essayist, historian and teacher during the Victorian era. He called economics "the dismal science", wrote articles for the Edinburgh Encyclopedia, and became a controversial social commentator. Coming from a strict Calvinist family, Carlyle was expected by his parents to become a preacher, but while at the University of Edinburgh, he lost his Christian faith. Calvinist values, however, remained with him throughout his life. This combination of a religious temperament with loss of faith in traditional Christianity made Carlyle's work appealing to many Victorians who were grappling with scientific and political changes that threatened the traditional social order. Birthplace of Thomas CarlyleCarlyle was born in Ecclefechan, Dumfries and Galloway,. His parents determinedly afforded him an education at Annan Academy, Annan, where he was bullied and tormented so much that he left after three years. In early life, his family's (and his nation's) strong Cal...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=128422 ... Read more

Product Description

Actor John Carlyle got his big break in 1954. New to Hollywood, the twenty-three-year-old Carlyle was cast as the assistant director of the movie-within-a movie in George Cukor's A Star is Born. Although Carlyle's scene was later cut from the film — and his star status subsequently never materialized — the job brought him in touch with Judy Garland, who up until her death fifteen years later was Carlyle's friend and sometime lover. Under the Rainbow: tells the story of this rocky but beloved relationship. No longer the great star who first enthralled Carlyle as an adolescent, Garland — like many former headliners in the 1960s — lived an often desperate, hand-to-mouth existence that was eased only by pills and liquor. She turned to Carlyle for support, even with the hope of marrying the openly gay actor. He politely declined the opportunity of matrimony, but remained constant in his adoration of the star for the rest of his life. The author takes us on a rare, behind-the-scenes tour of gay Hollywood, with an intimate, often hilarious, star-studded memoir of the decline and end of old Hollywood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Bio.
A most interesting posthumous bio of a little known actor of the '50s, '60s,..and his experiences and impressions of the Hollywood of that era.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting look at Hollywood by an actor who never achieved the fame he seemed to yearn for
I enjoyed reading this book, but its connection with Judy Garland can be misleading. John Carlyle does a good job in describing his friendship and deepening relationship with her. However, it's only a small part of the book. Just be aware that if you are a Garland fan, it's worth reading, even if you only read the parts about her.

However, I did enjoy learning about his own experiences as a young actor and the people he knew. Hollywood told from another perspective (the one who never made it big) was interesting.

The biography gets a bit bogged down when he describes his European trips, but he has a nice, friendly style of writing. He doesn't gossip too much, and he protects the names of those he probably could have mentioned.

I would have liked more photos. It only had one in the book and two on the dust jacket. I know the book was published after his death, but I would imagine his friends who edited his manuscript could have gotten access to more photos.

I would like to have seen his cut scenes from the 1954 A Star is Born; too bad none seem to have survived the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reading
I really enjoyed this book.I liked John Carlyle immediately into the first pages.I thought he was very honest about his life. He certainly had a more interesting life than most, particularly that it had a Hollywood twist. He sure never had any good roles or parts that I could see, but he never tried that hard to me. I wish he had told more and in more detail about his homosexual conquests if you would call them that-but as has been said previously, he was gentlemanly in his writings. Sometimes you weren't sure exactly what he was saying so you have to decide for yourself and he sure uses some big words (at least for me). But I enjoyed the local flavor of which locales I am all familiar with and I was right there with him in all his travels far and wide. I was very disappointed that there weren't more photos. I guess he never kept any. I REALLY would have liked to see photos from his youth up to the last days. That was real disappointing. But I think this book is going to be a keeper on my bookshelves, and that is saying a lot-because most are given to the library afterwards. In a postscript of my own, you can see his gravesite at .He's in good company there.

5-0 out of 5 stars entertaining
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. John Carlyle lived a fascinating life. Although the info here about Judy Garland included no big surprises
for me, I enjoyed reading about her by somebody who was there for both the good and the bad times covered here.

3-0 out of 5 stars Light Reading
John Carlyle was a lifelong "wannabe" in Hollywood. He was hopelessly smitten with Judy Garland from his youth, and only a bit less smitten with Joan Fontane.Eventually he apparently became close to Judy for a relatively short time. And he knew lots of people in the Hollywood scene of the 50's, 60's and 70's.But his memoir about these actors, producers, directors and agents is flawed by fuzzy writing and perhaps fuzzy memory.People in his circle DID drink a lot and do lots of drugs in those days.Light reading for anybody inerested in the movie industry of the last half of the 20th Century. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Flawed information with no basis in fact
The author has no knowledge of Hebrew and Greek. This is clear from his "evidence" regarding Hebrew and Greek words used in scripture. He relies on Strong's concordance, which gives only root forms. But Roberts doesn't seem aware of that fact, and thinks that the words he sees in Strong's, with the classic mispronunciations common in that work, are the actual words used in scriptures. An example from English would be the word "walk." In the dictionary, you will find only the root form listed: Walk. But the word has other forms: walks, walking, walked. In Hebrew and Greek, many more forms of a word will exist, but Strong's lists only the root form.

The author claims that the word "sh'kobeth" is found in Lev. 18:22 and 20:13 (p. 79). But such a word does not appear in either verse. This is the danger of people who cannot read the original languages trying to argue translation. They use Strong's, which can be a useful tool in the right hands, but which contains known errors, and they wind up with serious errors in their work.

In dealing with 1 Corinthians, he confuses the adjective malakos with the plural noun malakoi (again, because he cannot read Greek and is using Strong's, which only lists root forms.) Further, in translating arsenokoitais, he makes the mistake, thanks to Strong's, of linking it to the noun koiten, rather than its actual source, the verb keimai.

In referencing the former Presbyter of the National Gay Pentecostal Alliance (which is now known as the Global Alliance of Affirming Apostolic Pentecostals), he fails to mention that this person does have knowledge of Hebrew and Greek, and has, in fact, had experience in teaching Hebrew since 1979. So I am at a loss to understand how a man who cannot read Hebrew and Greek, and who must rely on Strong's Concordance, without even understanding how to use it properly, is qualified to rebut the research done by the afore-mentioned Presbyter. The research done is available from Amazon in the book Gay and Christian? Yes! by Rev. William H. Carey. Gay and Christian? Yes!

1-0 out of 5 stars COME AS YOU ARE!!!!
I THINK THATS WHY SO MANY PEOPLE RUN FROM CHRISTIANITY IS BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS WANTING TO CHANGE PEOPLE THEY DON'T EXCEPT THEM THE WAY THEY ARE. YOU ARE WHAT YOU ARE. GOD DID NOT COME HERE TO CONDEM YOU' HE LOVES YOU REGARDLESS! I DISAPPROVE OF ANY BOOK WHO TRIES TO CHANGE ANYBODY!

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a book that can really help!
Is there hope for the homosexual? Can a homosexual change? "Yes," is the answer to both of these questions by the author, a former homosexual and former minister in a pro-gaychurch.In his book, Roberts takes a candid and revealing look at his own homosexuality and states common environmental traits as the cause of his, and other's homosexuality including:sensitive temperament, sexual abuse, passive father/domineering mother, lack of affection/affermation from same sex parent and picked on by peers, among others. These environmental aspects created the same sex attraction in him and others, and steps are shown that can be taken to overcome and change them.

The book also examines with sensitivity what the bible says about homosexuality, dispelling some major misconceptions, but always showing the true heart of God. The perspective is complete and in depth and takes a revealing look at homosexuality.I was not surprised at all by the outcome, as these were things I actually heard speaking to me in my own heart.

Don't be scared off by the academic appearance in some parts of the book.In it there are practical, obtainable and achievable applications that I found out to have actually helped me overcome my own struggle with homosexuality. They really do work.

Through the book I was able to realize that God still loves even me, in spite of all myshortcomings and that change, something I desire most of all in the depth of my heart, is possible and can be accomplished.By applying the methods outlined in this book, I have seen change in my own personal life and I know that complete victory over homosexuality is feasible. What the author states in the book works. I know, without a doubt, that there is hope for all homosexuals and that change is really possible. ... Read more
