Good book
I wasn't really a Harry Caray fan but a friend let me borrow this book for a recent flight. I've always been a baseball fan so I thought I'd get something out it.

As it turned out, I was right. Steve Stone, who shared the radio booth with Harry, a Cubs legend, does a great job relaying some wonderful and hilarous stories about his partner. The story about Harry getting his "manhood" stuck in his zipper during a commercial break and trying to continue on had me laughing out loud.

More than anything, however, I just really enjoyed a unique look at the game. I've read players' books and even books by managers, in addition to ones like Moneyball and record boooks, but I gotta admit that this was a new one for me.

I think Cubs and baseball fans in general will enjoy this. Even after Harry's death, it's still a treat.

A fitting and real tribute
Steve Stone was Harry Carey's straight man for many years.In a sense, he was Harry's Norton.In this book, he tells the shadow's story, including the ups and down.

On the humorous side, Steve discusses Harry's struggle to remember names, and how he tormented Arnie (the producer) with his requests.

Steve also paints the image of Harry the promoter, explaining how in his way, Harry promoted the character that Steve was to play on the air.Stone also admits that he owes his job in many ways to Harry.That they stayed together for 15 years is a tribute to a partnership that in many ways seemed like a marriage.

Some of the things you may not know...With only a very rare exception, he didn't drink on TV, but kept the Bud glass a plug for his sponsors.That he always paid when we went out, even though he'd plug his favorite watering holes.

Steve also covers the dark side of Harry - how he handled grudges.How he'd insist on being the prima donna.Their petty fights, and how they'd get over them.His ostracism and eventual reconciliation with his family.

In the end, you're left with both a fitting and realistic picture of the icon.

Makes ya laugh, cry and laugh even harder
This book is one of the best ever.All you have to do is be a baseball fan. I gurantee even those dreaded Cardinal fans will love to read this book. The stories that Steve has in here will make you laugh and cry and than laugh again.

No matter what team you rooted for, everyone loved Harry.Sad to see him go, but glad to have the book to learn just a little bit more about him. Truly a comical wonder.

Excellent Stories
I grew up listening to Harry Caray and Steve Stone on WGN. I must say that this book brought back a lot of great memories and provided a lot of behind the scenes details that I never knew about. Any fan of baseball or story-telling will love this book. Steve Stone's candor makes the stories even better.

Holy Cow
It is a great book in that it tells a side of Harry Carey's life as a broadcaster that I never knew.I learned quite a few things about him, plus one of my friend's grandson is pictured in the book.(He is the one with the big glasses and the ivy on his head.He is a big Cub's fan!)My son-in-law loved the book, too! Great reading!

Pat Hughes delivers again
If you too think that Cubs radio announcer Pat Hughes is one of the best in the business, you'll enjoy this book. I'm not a Cubs fan, but the person I bought it for is. We both agree that listening to Cubs games on the radio is a pleasure, mostly because of Pat.

He tells tales about Harry Caray mostly from the broadcasting perspective. The person I got this book for is an avid reader, and finished it very quickly. It's an easy but fun read, or so I was told. Wonderful book
Even better than the recipes are the stories of Chicago, the cubs and Harry Caray.

Harry Caray's Chicken Vesuvio
I made this recipe for a dinner party and everyone loved it, but my husband and i thought the chicken was dry. I uesd boneless skinless chicken breasts. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have an answer for it? I will be making it again this week for a party. Thank you.

Very interesting story about a true character!
I was surprised by many of the observations in this book, but far from sensationalistic, it is very honest in what made up Harry Carey.I appreciated the fact it was authorized, and I imagine there is more then enough information about Harry to warrent another volume.Here's hoping we get to see more of "the voice of the Cubs'!

HARRY CARAY WAS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR BASEBALL ANNOUNCERS OF ALL TIME. I REMEMBER HIM DURING THE LATE 1960'S UNTIL HIS DEATH IN THE LATE 90'S. HE WAS SO ENTHUSIASTIC AND HIS LOVE FOR THE GAME WAS ADDICTIVE. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND FOUND IT BE VERY WELL WRITTEN. Harry Carey: Fun Whether Announcing Or Writing
The best thing about this book is that Harry Carey writes the same way he used to announce baseball games: he just talks to you, as if you were next to him. That makes this book a very fast read.There are no boring spots.

It's no prize-winner with deep thoughts but it's an honest, almost simple book by a guy who loved what he did and was grateful to be doing it.

I would like to have heard more details of the Cardinals and Cubs, the two teams he announced for many years.....but I'm not complaining. I enjoyed the book, and it made me really miss hearing Harry on the radio and TV.To me, he was one of best baseball announcers of all time, and probably the most entertaining.

Good at the beginning, I'll bet good at the end..
I've read the first pair of chapters, and this book is great so far.Harry Caray is the main reason why I'm majoring in broadcasting.He's one of my idols, and someone I aspire to be half as good as.

Excerpt: Gary Thorne (born June 9, 1948, in Bangor, Maine) is a play-by-play announcer for ESPN and ABC, working Major League Baseball, College football and Frozen Four hockey contests. He is also the television play-by-play voice of the Baltimore Orioles. After graduating from the University of Maine in 1970, University of Maine School of Law in 1973, and Georgetown Law School in 1976 (while paying tuition as a sportscaster/disc jockey), Thorne became Penobscot County assistant district attorney and joined the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. But eventually, Thorne found courtrooms dull when compared to broadcasting. Thorne's son-in-law, Damian DiGiulian, is a former assistant coach for the University of Vermont hockey team; Maine (Thorne's alma mater) and Vermont are rivals in the Hockey East conference of Division I hockey. DiGiulian is now a color commentator for ESPNU's college hockey broadcasts. By 1984, Thorne had enough leverage with baseball's Triple-A Maine Guides to name himself a co-owner. In 1985, Thorne began a four year stint as a radio announcer for the New York Mets. Thorne was present in the booth at Shea Stadium along with Bob Murphy for the now famous sixth game of the 1986 World Series between the Mets and Boston Red Sox. Buck received the Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987, and is honored with a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1995. The recently finished I-64/US-40 in St.Louis, Missouri has been named in Buck's honor. He is the father of Fox Sports lead NFL and MLB announcer Joe Buck. Buck was recognizable by his deep, gravelly voice, penchant for sardonic irony, and his distinctive play-by-play calls.
