Product Description
Instead of Going Out of Your Mind, Get into His. The only American to study and work with the renowned Barbara Woodhouse, Brian Kilcommons solves all those "bad dog" problems that drive owners crazy-and shows you how to raise a puppy into a happy, perfectly behaved dog. The trick is to understand how dogs think, read their body language, and, with the secrets Kilcommons shares in this book, be "fun, fair, and firm." A dog-training guide that gives you immediate results even with an adult dog, this manual trains you, as it gives owners everything they need and everything dogs need to become... Good Owners, Great Dogs Includes specific tips on how to: * housebreak both puppies and adult dogs * teach your dog to come to you regardless of what he's doing * end annoying habits like jumping, food stealing, and barking * prevent aggression and, in many cases, stop it after it has become a problem * use games to teach your dog to obey ...and much more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING
After having read many books on this subject -- I would rate "Good Owners, Great Dogs" on the top.It covers all aspects of dog care and training in a realistic, easy to understand manner. After having purchased dog care/training books with nothing but text, or nothing but photos -- this book was a welcome relief with a perfect mix of both.Incredibly useful - should be a must have reference book for all dog owners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good not Great
I was looking for more of a first time dog owner's book. While this does a decent job of covering basic dog info and gives some good ideas for first time puppy owners it is more geared towards commands than I had hoped. This being said it is well written and easy to follow. It is worth taking a look at and has some good ideas for a first time owner but just wasn't ideal for my purposes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent because it addresses the human end as well
This book addresses our HUMAN qualities as they relate to training. Being overemotional, frustrated, etc. are things I'm sure many dog owners/trainers have dealt with. The book addresses these items, and often reminds you of the attitude you should have when training your dog (which is NOT emotional, not angry, very matter of fact).

I find this so refreshing because as humans, if we keep in mind that neither us nor or our dogs are perfect creatures, it really takes the stress out of training. The book also explains how the dog views our requests, one example is that the dog doesn't really "get" the point of heeling -- what's the big deal about being at your left leg if we're both traveling the same way? Seeing things from the dog's point of view reminds us as humans that we are dealing with a creature that sees things differently than we do -- so we should not become frustrated and blame the poor dog for doing things when "they should know better".

It is a fun read and is very helpful, even for me and I have read many training books and other dog psychology books. This is a great mix of material that covers specific training methods, dog psychology, and human psychology. Best dog training book I've read and it should be mandatory reading for dog owners, since so many of the other training books don't address our human tendencies (and foibles) like this book does.

For all owner/trainers please keep in mind, your dog is doing what he SHOULD be doing based on all his past experiences and his inborn traits. This includes barking, chewing stuff, running away from you, etc. This is just to say, it is not necessary to blame the dog for his behavior, it is pointless and only makes for frustrated owners. Even though we consider certain behaviors "bad", your dog is trying his best given the hand he was dealt -- just like you are! You are here to help your dog, neither of you is perfect, and he is not a mind reader, so calmly help him to behave better and take the stress and 'taking it personal' out of the situation. This book is a great tool to train a dog and bear these important lessons in mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best dog training book I've ever read
Because there are so many differing methods of training your dog, I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews before buying this book several years ago. The methods in it are humane and nice and extremely effective. Using primarily this book (though also The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete), my dog is now five years old and extremely well behaved. I get compliments on his obedience all the time, and I attribute all of my/his success to this book.

The advice in the book is really excellent, but even more powerful is how it will help you understand how dogs think so you can apply that knowledge to new situations. He covers a wide variety of specifics about what to do in different kinds of situations, but in life there's always something out of the ordinary that will require *you* to think about how best to handle your dog. This book has given me a very strong framework and I can't recommend it highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I looked at many books before purchasing this book and two others to prepare for my new puppy. This book is very thorough, covering everything from how to choose a puppy to puppyhood to adulthood. It dives into the canine mind so you better understand care and training. It teaches traditional correction training methods that are humane.

I recommend pairing this book with When Pigs Fly by Jane Killion. Good Owners, Great Dogs will give you all the basics and the traditional view on training, and When Pigs Fly will give you a different perspective on training. I feel the combination is very valuable. Do not worry if you don't have a terrier breed, When Pigs Fly applies to all dogs. ... Read more

The guide was very usefull in laying out the 3rd season as the XF hit its stride.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great X-Files book to accompany your X-Files Collection!
Trust No One is a complex book that provides insight to any reader about one of the best shows, if not THE best, on television, The X-Files. This book is adorned with many facts and pictures that reveal an enormous amount of behind-the-scenes information that is helpful to a serious fan. I have gathered from it many details that I have put into my own episode guide. I highly recommend this if you are a die-hard X-Phile. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The book was interesting to read but the pictures were dull.
The book was great to read and the third season of X-Files was exciting. However, the pictures were stupid and all shouldhave been in color.Whoever had the idea of printing those pictures in a dark black and white should think again.Next time when they begin making the 5th season guide book they should print nice, clear, bright pictures along with the episode synopsises.

4-0 out of 5 stars This was a pretty good book
Since i am blind, i had my sister read it to me. i thought it to be pretty intresting and my sister described the pictures to me and i thought they were cool. i can't wait for the next season book to come out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
I really enjoyed the first book, THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE, which covered the first two seasons of the X-Files.But this book only covers one season and the authors Lowry and Stegall want you to dish out another $15.Even the color photos have been seen a gillion times before in other magazines.Don't waste your money on such a blatant attempt by Rupert Murdoch'spublishing company to milk this cow for all its worth. I usually enjoy Sarah Stegall's online reviews, but I can't believe she would be involved in such crass commercialism as this book.Shame on her, shame on the publisher, and shame on me for buying this crap ... From Lucy, the colossal elephant-shaped building on the Jersey Shore, to the grand donut atop Randy's in Los Angeles, this full-colour guide profiles the commercial giants that loom over America's highways. Created to sell products and promote tourism in a big way, they can be found all over the United States. The authors have travelled far and wide to bring readers the world's largest duck in Long Island, an enormous Amish couple in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and towering Paul Bunyans all over the Midwest. There are buildings shaped like hot dogs, ice cream cones, and baskets, as well as the roadside phenomena known as 'Muffler Men', giants who originally advertised mufflers but now have been converted to cowboys, Indians, spacemen, and pirates. Readers can discover the eccentric tendencies of American roadways in Roadside Giants co-authored by Brian and Sarah Butko. Roadside Giants is the fun travel guide to exploring the roadside intricacies and oddities of American culture, applying "an-easy-to use" map of America's giants with enhanced with full color pictures, aspect dimensions, address and location and a brief history for each of the dozens of featured places. 5-0 out of 5 stars Vacations from childhood
This book really captures all the great memories of going on vacation as a child. The Butko's do a wonderful job of finding all the great places, some off the beaten track and others not so off track, to help make memories for you and your children to take a driving vacation. The best memories seem to be the unplanned stops along the way. The authors make finding unusual spots a whole lot easier. The book is perfect to fit in the glove compartment to have handy no matter where your drive takes you.You are guaranteed to find a spot to stop somewhere along the way.By the authors taking all the guess work out of where to stop I think it will enable you to take in more roadside attractions and easier to plan the vacation. The pictures entice you to want to see all the attractions in person. This book definitely deserves a thumbs up! Great job!

3-0 out of 5 stars Unusual Type of Advertising, Still Around.
This book depicts examples of the various types of fiberglass statues they call 'giants' from coast to coast.Started originally as an ax-wielding Paul Bunyan, they became auto-related and usually held mufflers in their hands as they were in front of the businesses. The one pictured called Cowboy Sam, the big man in white because he also wears an enormous white cowboy hat, is thirty-foot-tall is in front of a restaurant. He was found at a Chicago restaurant show in 1962 and relocated to Pennsylvania, where the author lives.Originally, the Shoney's restaurants in this area had Big Boy statues out in front of their places, until people started carting them off. This cowboy has a black bow tie which makes him pretty classy.

This phenomenon started back in the 1920s used them in place of big signs to look like the products they were selling. In Knoxville, there were (and still are a couple left standing) of the tall ice-cream cones in front of the Kay's Ice Cream Shops. Now, the specialty is to have air-filled floppy imitations to get the attention of the public.

In the Introduction, they write that it is hard for the public, historians, and civic planners to view such attractions as historic; there is a building out on Clinton Highway built like a bi-plane and was originally a service station.A group raised funds to repair the dilapidated building and possibly transform it into a museum of some type.We also have two very large, black fiberglass cannons in front of our old courthouse. The World's Largest Teapot in West Virginia started out as a huge wooden barrel for Hire's Root Beer, but with the handle, top and spout, it magically turns into a teapot.

As the authors continue to take their trips to keep track of the elusive giants, they conclude that many have been preserved and there are actually some new ones out there. They've taken many trips to photograph the most unusual. There is an strange one near Denver. This book spotlights their favorites of the larger-than-life spectacular attention-getters from travelers and gives directions for finding them.Mr. Butko has written some books about unique diners, and his other book, GREETINGS FROM THE LINCOLN HIGHWAY. ... The authors of Good Owners, Great Dogs offer illustrated guidelines for cat care and tell how to interpret cat behavior, with in-depth details about kittenhood and techniques for readjusting feline behavior. 75,000 first printing.Amazon.com Review
Thinking of getting a cat?Read this book!Brian Kilcommons, an animal trainer for more than 20 years, and Sarah Wilson have written a book addressing all aspects of owning and caring for a cat. They explain the mechanics of cat ownership in a way that encompasses the emotional care necessary for a happy cat/owner relationship. In this lively, easy-to-read book (with a marvelous collection of feline photographs), subjects include taking care of a new kitten, raising a healthy cat, and understanding cat behavior. Scattered throughout are short stories about notable cats and their owners; one such story relates the account of Nermal, whose idea of fun was sliding down the laundry chute. Asides throughout the book relate such information as finding your lost cat, dealing with fleas, and choosing a veterinarian. Also helpful are the "Frequently Asked Questions" at the end of each chapter, which address those questions that one might not feel comfortable asking in a large group ("My kitten likes to chase flies. Is this okay?") Touted as "a guidebook for humans and their feline companions," this book is a must-read for any cat owner. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One misstep, the rest is good advice
I really like Kilcommon's advice on behavioral issues and methods to train cats. His advice has a slightly different angle than what you will find in a cat book by a vet.One point he makes, which I strongly disagree with, is his advice that if you can't tame a feral cat, have it euthanised.I presume he wrote this out of ignorance, since TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) wasn't widespread ten years ago, but since then has become the best and most widely accepted way to manage feral cats. They can live perfectly happy and healthy lives outside if they are spayed, neutered and cared for.Other than this, a solid book and good addition to cat care information.

5-0 out of 5 stars great advice for my fearful dog
My husband and I recently adopted a fearful/shy dog from a local canine rescue group. The group recommends this book to "new" parent(s).This book has given me some great advice in understanding, owning, and training a dog, as well as, how mybehavior/attitudes/emotions affect the dog's confidence.Originally, I checked this book out from a local library; I am going to purchase this book to have as a general reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I am a brand new cat owner and so I checked out 3 books from the local library, this being one of them.In reading each of the books, I realized that "Good Owners, Great Cats," almost always had the best, most common-sense advice written in a very "no holds barred" way.Kilcommons doesn't mince words and he's very opinionated, but his opinions seem to be right on the mark.I've only owned dogs in the past, and without reading this book I think that I would be clueless in how to train/discipline a cat.In the few short weeks that I've had the cat and the book (which I've purchased) I've used its hints and advice innumerable times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never Knew There Was So Much To Know About Cats!!!
A very thorough book on one of America's favorite companions!Great pictures and information. It made a wonderful gift for a friend too!!I highly recommend it!"Good Owners, Great Cats" and GreatPets.com- where else do you need to go to find out about cats?!

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have for your home library
This is a fabulous book!I had a good cat to start, but I wanted to understand her better.Brian and Sarah's book helped me understand what my cat was trying to tell me with her body language.Consequesntly, my cat has become more outgoing when people come over.In addition, this book was the main reason I was able to keep the peace when I brought a new dog home.

I read some other animal training books, and this book manages to cover the core of what you really need to know about cats better than the rest.I liked it so much, I also purchased Good Ownners, Great Dogs - which is also the best in its field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dog Training
I actually bought this book in preparation for a dog trainer class, at our local SPCA, where the instructors told us to get this book. I almost couldn't put it down when it arrived in the mail, because there is so much sound advice in it. And all of it is presented in a very approachable way. The authors start out with a long chapter on understanding your puppy and its different growth stages. Then they get into the basics of good dog training - from the beginners level all the way to the more advanced training levels. All throughout the book there are plenty of scenarios that you might encounter while training your dog and specific advice on how to deal with them. This book even comes with a great DVD that demonstrates some training techniques for housebreaking, barking, jumping etc. A very handy tool for all visual learners. Overall, I would highly recommend this book. It's one of the best training guides out there.

They wag their tails, slobber, and romp just as enthusiastically as their suburban and country cousins, but city dogs are a breed apart. They live in high-rises, trot along bustling sidewalks, and play in crowded dog runs, so good manners with both canines and humans is imperative. In this thorough guide, Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson tell urban dog owners how to do everything from housetraining a puppy-when the sidewalk is 40 floors away and she has to go now-to preventing Rover from barking in a thin-walled studio apartment. Loaded with an arsenal of proven training tips, METRODOG is the book every dog owner in every metropolis must have-because bringing up a dog in the city should be a walk in the park! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a lot of detailed information
I didn't find this book to be very useful at all. It was basically a short review of general dog care focussed on city living. However all the information was very breif and didn't go into very much detail. if you really want to learn more about your dog I suggest getting a book that is more focussed on just one subject. I highly suggest the book "Rover, Don't Roll Over" for positive training. This book might serve someone well as a general reference, but if you have any troubles or questions that need answering or even trouble shooting don't bother with this book. I aslo didn't like their training style, it wasn't harmful, I just don't think their particular techniques work as well as in Rover, Dont Roll Over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Metrodog:Not Just For City Folk
But particularly helpful for those of us who take on the highly rewarding challenge of sharing our busy city lives with a canine companion. It may just make you want to grab your dog and move to the big city!Useful for ALL dog owners and a NECESSITY for urban dog owners.Great photographs.Accessible to the average dog owner but with interesting, unique information for seasoned dog-lovers.

I am a HUGE MetroDog fan. There's advice in there that I've NEVER seen anywhere else, and I have 2+ shelves worth of dog books in my house. Nowhere else discusses how to secure your dog safely while you grab a cup of coffee, or how to hail a cab with your dog, for example. One of the most *practical* books - and not just for city dwellers. Suburbanites without fenced yards or even just full-time workers will find much useful info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kilcommons and Wilson have done it again.
I thought I would like this book, and I did.I've read all of the authors' other books about dogs, and this one was right up to par. There was no resting on laurels!

Metrodog is invaluable for dog-owning city dwellers, but it's equally useful for dog owners in any location. The book begins with how to find the right dog, and ends with how to say good-bye to a faithful old friend. In between it covers housebreaking, food, manners, training, socialization, exercise, and health care, with hundreds of useful details discussed with the authors' customary savvy and humor.

For readers who are interested in learning how to successfully and happily share their lives with a dog, this is the book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
Few people writing about dogs today have as much hands-on experience as this team. This is the book that I recommend to those who adopt dogs from me. I know that the advice that new dog owners will glean from this book will be level-headed, responsible, practical and kind.

Metrodog covers issues that real dog owners face. How can I get my dog to behave well enough to take him on my day to day errands? How should I handle encounters with those who are mentally ill? How should I exercise my dog? The skills listed herein are practical and easy to teach.

I adopt my rescue dogs to families who will really love and care for them, and I recommend books that will help them to integrate their new dogs easily and painlessly. I recommend Metrodog wholeheartedly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for the city dog...

5-0 out of 5 stars Childproofing Your Dog by Brian Kilcommons
I work in rescue and one of the most common reasons for giving up a dog is that there is a new baby in the family.Brian's book is an excellent sourse to read before the baby arrives. It gives you ideas on what to expect from your dog and what he may be thinking. It explains how to see the baby from the dog's point of veiw and to prepare the dog for the baby's arrival.A lot of problems can be prevented by reading this book.

Fantastic book for bringing a canine friend into a home with a child. Short and sweet but provided alot of good ideas and tips. Would definitely recommend!

1-0 out of 5 stars I never even received this order
I would love to review this book and tell you how great it is (many have told me so), but I never received it and I haven't had any action taken on the part of Amazon.com to get me the book. SO essentially I have paid for the product, not received it and Amazon is banking on their shipping error.

4-0 out of 5 stars Commonsense advice
Good commonsense, non nonsense advice that really just needed pointing out. Can be read before the baby/child joins the family or when introducing a dog to an existing family with children/infants.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have kids and a dog I highly recommend!!!
This book is a easy read with a lot of good advice, games, and training techniques that are perfect for anyone who has a dog and is introducing a baby to the dog or has a family and is introducing a new dog. Having trained 30,000 dogs for more than 40 years combined, Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson know a thing or two about North Americas favourite pet. They share their wisdom and experience in this easy-to-understand, user-friendly, and comprehensive guide to selecting a breed, including: which breeds are good for small children, the elderly, the allergic, and the city-dweller; the characteristics of each breed; and which dogs are most compatible with different lifestyles. In addition, unlike most breed books, Paws to Consider discusses medical and behavioral problems typical to particular breeds, and offers fascinating information about canines and their potential owners. 5-0 out of 5 stars Consider looking at this book.
This is my favorite "pick a dog" book. The pictures are plentiful and delightful. I love the chapter, Your Dog, Then and Now. It tells about how the different breeds came to be and what to expect of your dog. The breed profile section is arranged different than any other book I've seen. You have Nine-to-Five dogs, High-Input High-output dogs, The City dogs, Not for Everyone dogs, etc. A wonderful read even if you've already chosen a dog.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed.
Very disappointed.Received book in very poor condition.Binding broken.Pages falling out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Know TheBreed Before You Buy
Paws to Consider: Choosing the Right Dog for You and Your FamilyI am on my second copy of this book- my first got so dog-eared(sorry!) that it needed to be replaced. This is a very informative book in terms of gaining some understanding of most dog breeds that are out there. I found it to be a definite plus to divide up the chapters into specific situations(i.e. "9-5 dog", "watchdog", "family dog" etc.) as opposed to the American Kennel Club breed groups(sporting, working, toy etc.). The two major points to this book are that Kilcommons and Wilson are both long-time dog trainers and very accomplished.Secondly, it provides anyone with an excellent place to start researching their breed.I have referred to this book numerous times and will continue to do so.Recommended.It's a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great place to start
This book is very informative, and blends humor with unique insight to the ups and downs of many breeds. (By unique, I simply mean this book is not written in a "clinical" or "dry" manner. These are real people who share their experiences and help to educate prospective dog owners.) This book does not give alot of information about every breed--the authors only comment on breeds they are familiar with. My family and I are currently in search of the perfect dog for us, and this book made a great start. I've learned alot and am more excited to have the right dog share our home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do yourself - and your future pet- a favor and read this before you choose
This book is a delightful read, and well worth searching out. Kilcommons and Wilson provide impartial, practical and straightforward advice for eager potential dog owners. It's lighthearted yet serious, cautioning but not kill-joy. It gives a good impression of what living with different kinds of dogs can be like, and what your life with them would probably entail. And there are some surprises: some dogs you may not have considered suitable for your lifestyle, are (and vice-versa).

Brief descriptions of breeds' original uses and how this translates to their behavior will make you appreciate all dogs more, even breeds you may not care for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great information
I have not yet read cover to cover but selected parts, (Route 66) and several others, and just wish I had the time to go visit all of them. It evens mentions several that are no longer with us and what a shame if we miss any more before all these time treasures are all gone.

Excellent book to get some insight as to what is, and was, interesting to see and do on the Lincoln Highway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roadside Thrills!
This book is a dense and stunning compilation of all things "roadside" (interesting buildings, restaurants, fiberglass giants, old amusement parks, eccentric constructions, etc.).The research is thorough and up-to-date, the photos fantastic, and the subject matter comprehensive. It's a must-have for anyone looking to add interesting sights to their travels and for folks interested in Americana.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Love that "Pink" Motel with the Fairy
There is so much going on in this book; it is busy and fun, and informative, and a hoot! It is real trip down Memory Lane. Cover is lively and enticing, print quality is nice, as is page size. It is clear the authors enjoy their work. Colors are crispy cool! I plan to buy several for Christmas gifts. If you took road trips when you were young, you're going to really enjoy being reminded of the quirky places along the way. If you never experienced road trips in the middle of last century, then read it anyway and find out what you missed, and what your parents and grandparents are talking about when they say they "took a trip". I'm the cute little girl in the convertible on page 69.
