Product Description
For millions of years, mankind has gazed into the heavens, wide-eyed with wonder at the ghostly satellite we've come to know as the Moon. Artists, astronomers, poets, and plow-hands, all yearning to know what exactly it is that silently orbits just off our doorstep - that mysterious orb and first step to what truly is the final frontier. Yet throughout history only twelve men have set foot in a world other than our own.And of those twelve men only one has had the unique perspective of an artist: Alan Bean.Here--in time for the 40th anniversary of the Apollo landing on the Moon, July 20, 1969-- is his eyewitness testimony.

The book accompanies an exhibition of Alan Bean's paintings at the National Air and Space Museum, opening in July 2009. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Alan Bean's unique view
As one of the few people to ever have the opportunity to set foot on another world, it is lucky that Alan Bean was able to find his talent for painting.
Many times the images we have of those remarkable missions show a relatively bleak and nearly monochromatic moonscape.Bean is able to show us the subtile colors and shades that were not tranferable to the image making of the late 60's and early 70's.He is also able to take us on the flights of fantasy that only the men of his unique calibre are able to ingage. He also tries to share his spirital and personal changes in his visual world.
The paintings are reproduced in a high quality printing, with the colors and images coming through in a vibrant and pleasing way.
All in all an excellent book from a man with a very unique talent and viewpoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Book on an Island
Alan Bean amazes me every time he releases a new painting.I check back to his website often and try to keep up and dream of which order I would buy them in if I were to win a great lottery!Anyone who buys this book has done just that, won a great lottery.Captain Bean is the fourth of twelve moonwalkers and one of the youngest and hitting 80 soon. That said to state the obvious, "read about an American history while he's a living hero that you can go to an art gallery and see!"But the book!Oh my, if given a choice of books to take along with me when I'm to be left alone on an island I want this one! Each day I'll look at a new picture and find new intricacies, touches and dynamics. Then the next year I won't go chronological I'll try to decide how the trip took place for the crew not the order in which they were painted.Year after year would pass and yet I'd leave that island with the grandest love and respect for Alan Bean's knowledge and paintings but because I still wouldn't be finished enjoying, devouring, appreciating and continuing to pretend I was there with him as he saw each "picture" in his mind or tells me the joke as to how his whole crew is on the moon at the same time! I wouldn't leave the book behind once rescued, I'd take it back with me, holding it carefully, large palm moonwalkerleaves carefully folded around it to protect the binding so as not to loose a page or a moment in Mr. Bean's history! It's a book that will entertain and inspire me for as long as the pages will hold the gorgeous art.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Space Enthusiasts
I am a lifetime space enthusiast, and this book is a great addition to my collection. Amazing combination of style, skill, moon artifacts, and actual events or ideas. Each painting has it's own story. I give only four stars because the description of each painting is at the back of the book instead of by each picture - annoying to flip back and forth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique collection of art
Alan Bean's reason for producing this book was simple: while artists have enthralled us by reproducing natural beauty and historical scenes, no artists ever traveled to the moon. Until Alan Bean himself did on Apollo 12. Bean uses the paintbrush to evoke what it felt like to visit and travel the moon. Many of the paintings evoke a sort of New Frontier nationalism, with astronauts as the iconic cowboys of a Remington painting. One really interesting painting technique he uses is to incorporate parts of the Apollo mission into his actual painting style. For example, to provide texture, sometimes he will paint on a space suit bootprint or a piece of a spacecraft. The paintings themselves look like they have small craters. This creates a visually original effect - one that probably inspired directly by Bean's time exploring the moon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Man on the Moon
I am an artist and I can say as fellow artists know - observation and experience add so much to the artwork one creates.... To view a persons work that has been on the Moon and an artist is such an inspiration for me as my passion for astronomy is equal that of art.

This is a wonderful book of observations, feelings and a product of one very talented, fortunate man - and Astronaut and Artist - WOW !!! how unique!!! ... Read more

Product Description
Astronaut and artist Alan Bean was the lunar module pilotfor Apollo 12, and on November 19, 1969, the fourth man to walk on themoon. Apollo is the collection of his paintings and personal accountschronicling, with technical accuracy, the manned Apollo missions tothe moon. Bean's paintings and personal anecdotes make thetechnological wonder of Apollo a human adventure. Paintings includeHouston, We Have a Problem from Apollo 13, Neil Armstrong's first stepon the moon and stunning lunar landscapes of a place only twelveastronauts have ever visited. The text, by Apollo historian AndrewChaikin, puts the reader on the moon with Alan Bean and Commander PeteConrad.Amazon.com Review
When NASA sent the crew of Apollo 12 to the moon, theymay not have realized that they were giving an artist the vision thatwould carry him through a lifetime of painting. The artist, of course, was astronaut Alan Bean, whose trip to the moon with pals Pete Conradand Dick Gordon sunk so deeply into his brain that he's been trying toget it down on canvas ever since. He even mixes moon dust and bits ofcharred Apollo 12 heat shield into his paints to capture a bitof the Ocean of Storms in each image. The astronauts Bean paints arebrave, exuberant, and all-American, right down to the reflections ofOld Glory in their mirrored visors. His moon is surprisingly colorfuland dreamlike, a magical place for jumping higher than you ever didbefore, racing around in the lunar rover, and swatting golf balls intoorbit. Apollo: An Eyewitness Account, coauthored with spaceexpert AndrewChaikin, is filled with Bean's riveting stories and paintings, recording a long, successful career as an explorer-artist. Herecreates the drama and brash enthusiasm of the Apollo program in boldstrokes. --Therese Littleton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought it for the artwork
I bought this because of the illustrations. I am an artist and illustrator myself and Alan Beans work is outstanding.
The fact that he was there and did it makes his art all the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book in every way
When you get Alan Bean, astronaut and amazing artist, with Andrew Chaikin, a tremendous writer, you have the recipe for one magnificent book. The artwork, of course, is the main ingredient and it never disappoints. Alan Bean has a unique talent and tells the tale of going to the Moon in his drawings. Even without the accompanying words, it is easy to lose oneself in the moment. I think there is a certain 'realness' that the photos dont have and I do not know how to adequately explain why.
At any rate, this is a wonderful book and any space fan should not hesitate to pick it up.

4-0 out of 5 stars An artist from the Moon
There are sometimes laments that we will never get a proper description of what it's really like to be in space until we send a poet. However, though NASA may not have sent a poet, it did send a painter. Al Bean had dabbled in the arts before and during his tenure as an astronaut, but when he retired he focused on becoming a painter and particularly on creating paintings that showed what it was really like to walk around on the surface of the Moon. This book contains many of those paintings.

The text, meanwhile, is yet another memoir by an Apollo astronaut, and if anything is rather on the terse side, with only brief bits leading up to the more extensive Apollo portion, and only a brief conclusion. It's interesting but doesn't stand out amongst the many other astronaut memoirs, except for the accompanying illustrations. Each chapter concludes with a dozen or so pages reproducing Bean's paintings, with Bean explaining the scene he was depicting and what he wanted to show. This makes this book a unique record of one man's trip to the Moon, and, I suppose, won't be matched until we actually do send a poet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite Paintings from the Moon
First, let me say Alan Bean is one of the most articulate of the Apollo Astronauts who walked on the Moon.In addition to the painter himself captioning his collective series of truly unique "Paintings from the Moon", you owe it to yourself to purchase the DVD, "For All Mankind".This DVD is reviewed elsewhere on this site, but it and this particular book of Mr. Bean's paintings will likely become most treasured additions to your collection of manned spaceflight memorabilia.

I also found the dramatic characterization of Alan Bean, and exploits of his Apollo 12 crewmates, depicted in Tom Hank's 1998 HBO miniseries, "From the Earth To The Moon", to be very entertaining.Thatespisode of that facinating and truly outstanding TV production was first telecast in 1998.This book was published in the same year and the two works complement each other very well, upstaging most of the other spaceflight documentaries somewhat lacking in humanistic content.

We are very fortunate to have had at least one Astronaut with additional interests other than pure science and aerospace engineering, to share his extraordinary experiences while a key member of the Apollo program.

The one and only thing missing from my copy of this book is Alan Bean's personal autograph!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reviewing Hero's
If you have a strong interest in Space travel, and always wanted to talk to the Astronauts that went to the moon to ask them how it felt or what they were thinking as they walked on a planet other then earth, this is the book that will bring you to a time that has never been repeated.A time when man walked on the moon.

Mr. Bean's use of his fantastic artwork to describe a part of his life when he was a member of the elite few, chosen by NASA, to become the first to walk on the moon, is the closest you will get to actually being there.

It is a book of Mr. Beans paintings but also a trip thru the minds of some of our first Astronauts. If how space travel began interests you at all, I strongly recommend obtaining this book. It's a must have to any collector of Space Memorabilia. ... Read more

Product Description
In a Willian S. Phillips painting—a tight formation of F-4 Phantoms screaming over Crater Lake, Oregon; the Blue Angels soaring near the California coast; a violent confrontation between a German Bf-109 and a RAF Spitfire above Sussex’s Beachy Head; a line of Bell Hueys passing through a monsoon-soaked valley in Vietnam—a viewer can almost feel the pressure on his body from the groundblurring speed of the plane, his mouth go dry in the desert air, or the chill on his neck when it’s so cold it hurts to breathe. Phillips is also a superb landscape and “skyscape” painter who places his subjects in geographic and historical context.

A wealth of aviation and military history by Ann and Charlie Cooper accompanies the paintings, as do Phillips’s own archival photographs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid "splendor"
A great collection of details about the artist, his revelations of His creation and the aeronautical, technological and historical creations of mankind, both in war and peace.I couldn't be happier with a book in my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous aviation paintings well presented

William S Phillips is one of the very top aviation artists, and this collection of his work certainly says why.He is very accurate in his depiction of various aircraft, but also places them in settings that evoke the wonder and romance of flight.I greatly enjoy the book. It's the sort of book you can just crack open anywhere and what you see will please and interest you.Yes, the captions are sometimes a bit corny, but the text gives good historic context to the paintings, and the text gives a window into exactly who this very talented artist is.Very worthwhile purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must!
This is simply too good a collection of paintings to not own it. You will enjoy leafing through this book at odd times, getting lost in the picture that is before you and forgetting that it is art and not a slice of life.

Phillip's works are small treasures and owning them in book form is special.

3-0 out of 5 stars good, but disappointing
I am more of a fan of Phillips "nostalgia" pictures than just the airplane pictures, so I was a little disappointed in the treatment of them. Several were cover pages with printing on them which ruined the nostalgia mood.Several were too small.Several were good.If you are a fan of all of Phillips paintings, then you must have this. The quality is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing art/coffee table book
Whether an old hand or new to aviation art, this is the book to own.Phillips' art is in itself amazing. However, the presentation and accompanying words make the book even better. The size of the book ensures the reader can appreciate the art without the distraction of page gutters and make it perfect for display.Ann and Charlie Cooper have done a wonderful job describing the thoughts and ideas behind each piece of art - very well researched. You won't be disappointed. ... July 20, 1969, marked one of the climactic moments in our history—the day Apollo 11 landed on the moon. But it is only one piece of a magnificent story. Mission Control, This Is Apollo, by the acclaimed Andrew Chaikin (author of A Man on the Moon, basis of the HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon), recounts space history from the Mercury missions through Apollo 17 and beyond. It is illustrated with stunning full-color paintings by astronaut Alan Bean, who walked on the moon with Pete Conrad on Apollo 12 and has devoted his post-NASA life to creating art. Handsome, informative, and dramatic, this is no textbook—it is the tale of humankind’s greatest adventure in the last frontier: space. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh, delicious look at Apollo
Al Bean does promethean work through pigments, sharing the Apollo fire.Must have for any Apollo fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mission Control The Story of the First Voyages to the Moon
This book is very interesting as is all of the Apollo books. Andrew Chalkin is an excellent author. This is the nail-biting account of the trouble with communications between Houston and the Command Modules with every mission. When Apollo 8 launched, it was a good time to test out communications. Communications were eventually sorted out and we have the triumph of Apollo 11. There is some wonderful information here.

Alan Bean is a wonderful artist and his paintings are featured in this book. I already own his leather and gold bound book.

I know more than the usual reader. I am a very rare woman aerospace engineer on the Saturn V. I worked on the first stage, the S-IC.
I know people. :) I recently sent out a query to any Apollo Astronaut. "How was the ride on my beloved Saturn V?"
The answer came back from Alan Bean. "TERRIFYING!"Tee Hee

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic for young andold
This book is perfectly laid out for enjoyment and understanding. A nice quick overview of each of the manned Apollo missions. It includes original paintings by astronaut Al Bean (the fourth man on the moon).

Very good book for space race buffs and those who don't yet appreciate the magnificent accomplishments and heroic men of this era of U.S. history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mission Control, this is Apollo
I love this book.It is extremely well done, a bit different from the usual - it covers all Apollo flights from One to Seventeen. It isset out beautifully and the illustrations are superb. My grandson is going to be thrilled with this for Christmas.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the "real" story of the Apollo Missions, one that will WOW you from the first page to the last!
The Russians and the Americans were like two brothers, always trying to outdo the other and come in first. At times, in their race to space, the Russians would pull ahead, only to have the Americans hot on their heels. On April 12, 1961 "Americans once again felt the sting of being second best" when Yuri Gagarin orbited the earth via his spaceship, Vostok.Projects Mercury and Gemini set the stage for the success of Project Apollo, but there were lists of things that had to be accomplished and the real race was on.

Gus Grissom, one of three astronauts slated to be on the "first manned Apollo flight," Apollo One, was becoming more and more frustrated with the "communication problems" the project was having."How are we going to get to the moon if we can't talk between two buildings?"He had a point there. This ill-fated mission never got off the ground when a disastrous fire on the launchpad took the lives of the crew in a horrifying manner. The next five missions were unpiloted and everyone was cautious.Even the Russians lost Vladimir Komarov. Were we really ready to tempt fate and head to the moon?

The race was now on in earnest. This book covers each manned Apollo mission in a vibrant, thrilling manner touching on history while including the viewpoints as many people involved in the project as possible. The emotional cast of the book ranges from heartbreak to humor to ecstasy. In the front of the book there is an illustration and overview of the Apollo spacecraft.Early on there is a two-page spread on both the Mercury and Gemini Missions outlining the crew, the duration of the flight and their achievements.

This book is absolutely marvelous! The stunning full color art work by former Apollo 12 lunar module pilot, Alan Bean, will blow you away. The writing quickly draws the reader in. Even the most reluctant reader will make it to the end.Dozens of people were interviewed for this book, including Apollo astronauts, flight directors, controllers and many other people who played a part in the Apollo Project. There are numerous photographs, fantastic sidebars, an index and additional recommended book and web site resources. This is one book you definitely won't be able to resist buying! ... Excerpt: Neil Alden Armstrong (born August 5, 1930) is an American aviator and a former astronaut, test pilot, aerospace engineer, university professor, and United States Naval Aviator. He was the first person to set foot on the Moon. His first spaceflight was aboard Gemini 8 in 1966, for which he was the command pilot, becoming one of the first U.S. civilians to fly in space (Joseph Albert Walker became the first US civilian in space aboard X-15 Flight 90 several years earlier) and the first civilian in orbit. On this mission, he performed the first manned docking of two spacecraft together with pilot David Scott. Armstrong's second and last spaceflight was as mission commander of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission on July 20, 1969. On this mission, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface and spent 2½ hours exploring while Michael Collins remained in orbit in the Command Module. Armstrong is a recipient of the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. Before becoming an astronaut, Armstrong was in the United States Navy and saw action in the Korean War. Excerpt: Proton () (formal designation: UR-500) is an expendable launch system used for both commercial and Russian government space launches. The first Proton rocket was launched in 1965 and the launch system is still in use as of 2010, which makes it one of the most successful heavy boosters in the history of spaceflight. All Protons are built at the Khrunichev plant in Moscow, and then transported for launch to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, where they are brought to the launch pad horizontally and then raised into vertical position for launch. The name "Proton" originates from a series of large scientific Proton satellites, which were among the rocket's first payloads. It is also known as the D-1/ D-1e or SL-12/SL-13. Like many Soviet boosters, the name of the recurring payloads became associated with their launchers. Launch capacity to low Earth orbit is about 22 tonnes (49,000 lb). Geostationary transfer capacity is about 56 tonnes (11,00013,000 lb). Commercial launches are marketed by International Launch Services (ILS). After the war, he served as a test pilot at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) High-Speed Flight Station, now known as the Dryden Flight Research Center, where he flew over 900 flights in a variety of aircraft. As a research pilot, Armstrong served as project pilot on the F-100 Super Sabre A and C aircraft, F-101 Voodoo, and the Lockheed F-104A Starfighter. He also flew the Bell X-1B, Bell X-5, North American X-15, F-105 Thunderchief, F-106 Delta Dart, B-47 Stratojet...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=21247 ... Read more

Excerpt: University of Colorado A. Harold Montgomery, Sr. (April 19, 1911December 17, 1995), was an agricultural businessman and a Louisiana state senator, who is remembered as an outspoken conservative within his state's dominant Democratic Party. He represented District 36 -- Bossier and Webster parishes and, later, part of Bienville Parish -- in three nonconsecutive terms in the Senate, 19601968 and 19721976. As with the "S" in Harry S. Truman, the "A" in A. Harold Montgomery stood for nothing. Montgomery was born in Humble, near Houston in Harris County, Texas, to Alley C. and Martha Belle Montgomery. He was one of eight children who moved in 1921 with their parents to tiny Linton in Bossier Parish. The Montgomerys then relocated to Benton, the parish seat, so that the children could receive a better education. He graduated from Benton High School, and with t...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5817611 ... Read more

Product Description
In his 1962 book The Gutenberg Galaxy, Marshall McLuhan wrote the famous words: "The new electronic interdependence recreates the world in the image of a global village." As predicted by the renowned Canadian media theorist, satellite telecommunications, beginning with the first Sputnik launch in 1957, united humanity under a vast "cosmic membrane." An immense web of waves echo information around the planet, and distance and time are abolished. Dreams, upheavals, trends, and conflicts are now experienced on a global scale. Global Village: The 1960s plumbs the depths of those planetary echoes as they resonated throughout the decade in the fields of visual arts, decorative arts, fashion, and architecture. Along with a wealth of images, it contains interviews with diverse key figures of the time, including designer Ettore Sottsass, art critic Arthur Danto, artist Yoko Ono, filmmaker Agnès Varda, curator Okwui Enwezor, writer Tobias Wolff, playwright Michel Tremblay, and artist Carolee Schneeman.
