Product Description
Robert McDoodle was soon to be six
and his parents were up to their usual tricks.
He'd found in the dustiness under their bed
pink socks, a red shirt, and a new pair of Keds.

Robert's parents just don't get it. For his sixth birthday he doesn't want any more stuff -- he wants to be a dog. So one night he sneaks off to dog school, where he takes lessons in Sniffing, Panting, Drinking from Bowls, and Pushing Your Muzzle Deep into Holes, among other things. Will Robert be happy with a dog's life? Read this howlingly funny book to find out! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I wanna be a dog! I wanna wag my tail!
What a beautiful (and hysterical) book. As a children's librarian, I read a LOT of children's books (most not this much fun). On the giggles scale (the bottom of which is Ivanhoe & the top of which is Captain Underpants) this is a solid Captain Underpants. What first or second grader when faced with a day of school hasn't dreamed of the care-free life of the family dog? Robert McDoodle being no ordinary 5 (almost 6) year old DOES something about attaining that goal. But at Jellicoe Dog School he finds out there's more to being the first Human Pup than chasing sticks and digging in the dirt. The watercolor illustrations are full of energy and a perfect match for the inspired story. My storytimers (K to 3rd grade) love it. I'm sure yours will too (even if they aren't dog people)! Perfect for storytimes when coupled with the song quoted in the title of my review! ... Read more

Evil owl overlord.

Your average kid probably doesn't get raised by a Satyr, but that is what happens to the boy in this book.

As well, the bad guy is out to get him, and it is a hoot. Not fun, but because he is an owl.Complete with minions. What minions does a master villain avian employ?Crows, of course.Avians in black. The black hats.Ok, well black feathers in this case, but anyway.

Lots of running around to other supernatural creatures and running away to be done here.

4-0 out of 5 stars When a poet writes prose...
Bauer's literary reputation derives from his well-regarded poetry. In this, his only (I believe) prose work, we see why: the language use sheerly is poetry. The text begs to be read aloud, even if only inside our own heads.

The prose is not only beautiful, it is clever. The characters are often wry and witty, even the evil ones.

This book is a minor classic, and why it ever goes out of print is one of those mysteries to which only pointed-headed, soulless bean counters can give an answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully lyric fable
This is a wonderfully written fable, perfect for teens and adults alike.Bauer has a lyric style that makes the book a joy to read.Satyrday has a very interesting premise starting with the evil owl having his minions, the ravens, capture the moon.Much of the story revolves about the satyr and a boy he has raised from infanthood journeying to save the moon, with the assistance of one raven and a magical white fox. There are numerous other well-developed characters in this fable, and the story moves at a very good pace.Good and evil, although well delineated, are not always obvious, a nice change from many fantasy stories.Satyrday would make for great reading to younger children (there are some scary and sad parts, so read it 1st yourself), but expect to translate some of the beautiful language (e.g., the lugubrious raven); not so much, however, to be distracting to young teens that might read this on their own.As an adult, I wished not for a longer book, but for continuing stories from Bauer. It is very surprising, and sad, that this book is out of print, being so well written and entertaining, and having gained broadbased, and well-deserved praise in reviews (reprinted in the front of the edition I have).Hopefully Satyrday will be reissued soon. ... Product Description
An amazing cat and a clever young girl help save their troubled village in this rollicking, humor-filled tale.

A remarkable cat was once born in the little town of Felicity-by-the-Lake, a cat with fur that seemed to shift color in the slightest breeze. His name was Ulwazzer, and he was a wanderer; he spent months at a time roaming the world. Sooner or later, though, he always returned to the beautiful place where he'd first opened his eyes.

But on one visit, Ulwazzer found that his village had changed. A gloomy silence hung over the houses. The lake was empty of swimmers, and there was no giggling crowd at the ice cream shop. Instead, there was a greedy new mayor named Hoytie who was in the process of claiming every town pleasure for himself and his family.

Could clever Ulwazzer find a way to save the town? Would the help of a kind girl named Daria and a team of angry waterfowl be enough to defeat the mayor? All the cat knew was that he had to try. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Accuracy Apparent
Steve Lopez describes Philadelphia as only a true Phialdelphian can. From cheesesteak to corrupt police, he uses stereotypes that live and breath in the city and shows us they can be true.

5-0 out of 5 stars The usual love/hate Philadelphia story
Any real Philadelphian knows all about the love/hate relationship we tend to have with this, our fair city.Steve Lopez just happens to consolidate it into one very charming anecdote. This is one of my favorite books, and I have given a copy to everyone from my husband to my political science professor and we all love it.I miss Steve Lopez's crazy and engaging columns, even though I was a kid when he left Philly, because my parents always had one posted on the refrigerator door and they always inspired me to write.Lopez's knowledge of Philadelphia shines through in this book, and dare I say, I think he misses us, even with our perpetually bad sports teams and insatianble thirst for scandal and infamously dirty politicians...and that's the earmark of a TRUE Philadelphian. To see the sweet, sticky marmalade behind the madness.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rare, Great Book
This is one of those books that actually makes you feel for the characters. It revolves around a small-time politician and his devoted assistant/henchman. The tone it's written in, and the blend of humor and pathos will make is a very special experience for anyone who reads it. I read it three years ago and still remember scenes and lines in it. I wish Steve Lopez would write more books.

5-0 out of 5 stars a well written book
this book about an attorney living in philadelphia and working on a case about a an oil caompany thats been polluting the city.this book manages to keep you interested from page one and the story keeps you laughing aswell.the ending will satisfy you as well.highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars yo.....you gotta read dis book!
As a displaced Philadelphian, The Sunday Macaroni Club was a trip through the old neighborhood. Lopez writes about Philadelphia, its people, and its politics, like a master.I wonder, though, if a non-Philadelphian mightnot be lost. ... Read more

Product Description
This digital document is an article from The Psychological Record, published by The Psychological Record on March 22, 2009. The length of the article is 6178 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

From the author: Stevens's power law ([PSI][various][[PHI].sup.[beta]]) captures the relationship between physical ([PHI]) and perceived ([PSI]) magnitude for many stimulus continua (e.g., luminance and brightness, weight and heaviness, area and size). The exponent ([beta]) indicates whether perceptual magnitude grows more slowly than physical magnitude ([beta] < 1), directly as physical magnitude ([beta] [approximately or equal to] 1), or more quickly than physical magnitude ([beta] > 1). These exponents are typically determined using judgments of single stimuli. Miller and Sheldon (1969) found that the validity of Stevens's Power Law could be extended to the case where the mean of a property in an ensemble of items was judged (i.e., average length or average tilt where [beta] [approximately or equal to] 1). The present experiments investigate the extension of this finding to perceived brightness with [beta] [approximately or equal to] 0.33 and find evidence consistent with predictions made by Miller and Sheldon.
