Excerpt: Derek Bailey (29 January 1930 25 December 2005) was an English avant-garde guitarist and leading figure in the free improvisation movement. Bailey was born in Sheffield, England. A third generation musician , he began playing the guitar at the age of ten, going on to study with John Duarte among others. As an adult he found work as a guitarist and session musician in clubs, radio, dance hall bands, and so on, playing with many performers including Gracie Fields, Bob Monkhouse and Kathy Kirby, and on television programs such as 'Opportunity Knocks'. Bailey was also part of a Sheffield based trio founded in 1963 with Tony Oxley and Gavin Bryars called 'Joseph Holbrooke' (named after the composer, whose work they never actually played). Although originally performing relatively 'conventional' jazz this group became increasingly free in direction . Bailey moved to London in 1966, frequenting the Little Theatre Club run by drummer John Stevens. Here he met many other like-minded musicians, such as saxophonist Evan Parker, trumpet player Kenny Wheeler and double bass player Dave Holland. These players often collaborated under the umbrella name of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, recording the seminal album Karyobin for Island Records in 1968. In this year Bailey also formed the Music Improvisation Company with Parker, percussionist Jamie Muir and Hugh Davies on homemade electronics, a project that continued until 1971. He was also a member of the Jazz Composers Orchestra and Iskra 1903, a trio with double bass player Ba...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=86047 ... Read more

Description:
Deforestation in the Himalayas is generally seen as caused primarily by population growth. Based on interviews and the analysis of satellite images, we critically examine this view using Basho Valley in the Western Himalayas of Pakistan as a case study. Our findings indicate that the forest of Basho has been reduced by at least 50% after the valley was opened up through the construction of a link road in 1968. Large-scale legal and illegal commercial harvesting was carried out after the construction of the road. While legal commercial harvesting was stopped in 1987, illegal harvesting has since continued with the involvement of the Forest Department. The findings of this study do not support theories in which deforestation is attributed to rapid population growth. Instead, mismanagement and illegal commercial harvesting endorsed by the Forest Department have been the main causes of deforestation in Basho Valley. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Michelangelo quadrangle is in the southern hemisphere of the planet Mercury, where the imaged part is heavily cratered terrain that has been strongly influenced by the presence of multiring basins. At least four such basins, now nearly obliterated, have largely controlled the distribution of plains materials and structural trends in the map area. Many craters, interpreted to be of impact origin, display a spectrum of modification styles and degradation states. The interaction between basins, craters, and plains in this quadrangle provides important clues to geologic processes that have formed the morphology of the mercurian surface. Several low-albedo features are evident in Earth-based views of the Michelangelo quadrangle, but these features do not appear to correlate directly with any mapped terrain unit. Solitudo Promethei may correspond to a deposit of plains materials centered at 58°, 135°, and Solitudo Martis may correspond to similar materials at 30° to 40°, 90° to 100°. The color data (orange/ultraviolet) presented in Hapke and others (1980) likewise show no particular correlation with mapped terrain types. The yellow region (moderately high orange/ultraviolet) centered at 33°, 155° appears to correspond to a smooth plains deposit, but the region overlaps into adjacent cratered terrain. Mariner 10 photomosaicMariner 10 data include complete photographic coverage of the quadrangle at a resolution of about 2 km. In addition, twelve stereopairs cover scattered areas in the quadrangle; these photographs were used to supplement the geologic interpretation. About 10° of longitude of the H-13 quadrangle (Solitudo Persephones Province) adjacent to the west is in...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=14609586 ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Print on demand title of an old essay
Please note: this is simply a Print-On-Demand issue of Prof. Chamberlain's essay "Basho, The Chief Poet of Japan, and the Hokku, or Epigram Verses". This publishing house also uses the former part of the title in a second publication of the same essay, so do not be confused or waste your money on the same text. It is nice to have this essay available separate from the original volume it had appeared, Sacred Books and Early Literature of the East: Vol. 13 Japan, edited by Charles F. Horne, first published in 1917. However, Chamberlain's translations are loose and only serve as an academic curiosity as all of the poems within have been translated umpteen times since, and by more skilled scholars of the genre. The poems' adjacent texts offer little or no insight to Basho's thoughts or offer criticism of the verse. ... Read more

Product Description
In the parlance of modern Japanese philosophy, the term Basho denotes a field of experience underlying all conceptions of reality, while remaining itself conceptually ungraspable. "The Basho of Economics", then, refers to the economy's hidden experiential ground, which has never been explicitly scrutinised, as such, by mainstream economics. We uncover this ground by discerning the tacit presuppositions of classical and neo-classical theories from the perspective of modern Japanese philosophy. In particular, we draw attention to the traditional atomist assumptions implicit in their equilibrium-centred models. By breaking through these assumptions, we reconstruct the economy as a functional and relational world of habitual and creative activity outside of the scope of mechanical laws. ... Read more
