Excerpt: Edward Sheriff Curtis (February 16, 1868 October 19, 1952) was a photographer of the American West and of Native American peoples. Edward Curtis was born near Whitewater, Wisconsin. Curtis' father, Rev. Johnson Asahel Curtis (1840-1887), was a minister and a American Civil War veteran. Rev. Curtis was born in Ohio. Rev. Curtis' father was born in Canada, and his mother in Vermont. Edward's mother, Ellen Sheriff (1844-1912), was born in Pennsylvania; and both her parents were born in England. Curtis' siblings were Raphael Curtis (1862-c1885), who also was called Ray Curtis; Eva Curtis (1870-?); and Asahel Curtis (1875-1941). Around 1874 the family moved from Wisconsin to Minnesota. Curtis dropped out of school in the sixth grade. He soon built his own camera. In 1880 the family was living in Cordova Township, Minnesota, where Johnson Curtis was working as a retail grocer. In 1885 at the age of seventeen Edward became an apprentice photographer in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1887 the family moved to Seattle, Washington, where Edward purchased a new camera and became a partner in an existing photographic studio with Rasmus Rothi. Edward paid $150 for his 50 percent share in the studio. After about six months, Curtis left Rothi and formed a new partnership with Thomas Guptill. The new studio was called Curtis and Guptill, Photographers and Photoengravers. In 1892 Edward married Clara J. Phillips (1874-1932), who was born in Pennsylvania. Her parents were from Canada. Together they had four children: Harold Curtis (1893-?); Elizabeth M. (Beth) Curtis (1896-1973), who married Manford E. M...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1370087 ... Read more

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Western literary study flows out of eighteenth-century works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Denis Diderot, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. Excerpt: Stephen Edward Ambrose (January 10, 1936 October 13, 2002) was an American historian and biographer of U.S. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon. He was a long time professor of history at the University of New Orleans and the author of many best selling volumes of American popular history. Beginning late in his life and continuing after his death, however, many reports and evidence have continued to surface documenting long time patterns of plagiarism, falsification, and inaccuracies in many of his published writings and other work. In response to one of the early reports, Ambrose said he was not "out there stealing other people's writings." Ambrose was born in Lovington, Illinois to Rosepha Trippe Ambrose and Stephen Hedges Ambrose. His father was a physician who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Ambrose was raised in Whitewater, Wisconsin, where he graduated from Whitewater High School. His family also owned a farm in Lovington, Illinois and vacation property in Marinette County, Wisconsin. He attended college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he was a member of Chi Psi Fraternity. According to his co-author and friend Douglas Brinkley, Ambrose was a University of Wisconsin football player who played in the Rose Bowl. Ambrose originally wanted to major in pre-medicine, but changed his major to history after hearing the first lecture in a U.S. history class entitled "Representative Americans" in his sophomore year. The course was taught by William B. Hesseltine, whom Ambrose credits with fundamentally shaping his writing and igniting his interest in history. While at Wisconsin, Ambrose was a member of the Navy and Army R.O.T.C.. He graduated with a B.A. in 1957. He also married his first wi... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=65984 ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
Published to mark the 50th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy, Stephen E. Ambrose's D-Day: June 6, 1944 relies on over 1,400 interviews with veterans, as well as prodigious research in military archives on both sides of the Atlantic. He provides a comprehensive history of the invasion that also eloquently testifies as to the ways that common soldiers performed extraordinary feats. He further combines history and journalism to describe how American GIs battled their way to the Rhineland in Citizen Soldiers, which contains memorable accounts of the Battle of the Bulge and other events as seen through the weary eyes of the men who fought in the foxholes. And in Band of Brothers, Ambrose tells the horrifying, hallucinatory saga of Easy Company, whose 147 members he calls the nonpareil combat paratroopers on earth, circa 1941-45. The Easy Company survivors describe the hell and confusion of any war, but despite the gratuitous horrors it relates, Band of Brothers illustrates what one of Ambrose's sources calls "the secret attractions of war ... the delight in comradeship, the delight in destruction ... war as spectacle." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Ambrose in His Element
I came to order "Best of" as a Christmas present after ordering the set for myself, only to find it out of stock. So since I'm here, I'll throw my nickel in.

Let me say from the start that I may be somewhat biased since I was a student of Dr. Ambrose at the University of New Orleans. He was far and away the most captivating instructor I had during my time there as a politcal science/history major (all 5 1/2 years- hey, I worked full time).Nevertheless, I will try to be objective.

Along with his sudden rise in the national spotlight has also come a sudden rise in publications from Dr. Ambrose.I have been somewhat disappointed in a couple of them, but these are not to be included in that category. To date, I've read about 2/3 of Dr. Ambrose's books. These three books, along with his definitive biography on Dwight Eisenhower, are without question among his very best.

The drama that Dr. Ambrose provided in the classroom is illustrated in these books.Just as his passion for World War II led him to be the driving force behind the National D-Day Museum here in New Orleans, his passion for this era in world history also shines through in these books. He is simply in his element when it comes to topics surrounding World War II.

The fact that this trio is sold out is testimony to the quality of his writing and authority as a historian. His combination of presenting the facts while keeping the reader captivated through his unique narration is what makes Dr. Ambrose a delight to read.

Trust me on this one- get your hands on this when (if) it becomes available.

Product Description
Now available in a beautiful paperback collector's set are three of the most significant and bestselling books by legendary author and historian, Stephen Ambrose.Dr. Stephen Ambrose was a renowned historian and acclaimed author of more than 30 books. He had a unique ability to provide insight into the future by employing his profound knowledge of the past. His stories demonstrate how leaders use trust, friendship and shared experiences to work together and thrive during conflict and change. His talents have not gone unnoticed by the film industry. Dr. Ambrose was the historical consultant for Steven Spielberg's movie, "Saving Private Ryan," and Spielberg and Tom Hanks purchased the film rights to Citizen Soldiers and Band of Brothers to make the Emmy-winning 13-hour HBO mini-series, "Band of Brothers." "He made history accessible to many who might never pick up such a book or care to examine where we were that got us to where we are today. That may be his most important legacy." -Stephen Spielberg"[Ambrose] always celebrates the American spirit-a spirit he believed carried us to remarkable achievements." -Richmond Times Dispatch"Ambrose's commitment to the what-was-it-really-like school is deep." -Tom Ferrell, The New York Times Book Review ...
