Editorial Review

Product Description
This book evaluates the evidence on the impacts of population growth on well-being in developing countries and concludes that slowing population growth from high current levels, especially in poor, agrarian societies facing pressure on land and resources, is advantageous to economic development, health, food availablitiy, housing, poverty, the environment, and possibly education. It also concludes that while other economic and social policies may affect one or a few of these components of well-being more directly, few, if any, are likely to have the breadth of impact of family planning programmes. ... Product Description
Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Dennis Taylor (born Denis Taylor, 19 January 1949 in Coalisland, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland) is a retired snooker player, and current BBC snooker commentator. Winner of two ranking events, he is best known for winning the 1985 World Snooker Championship final, beating the heavily favoured Steve Davis on the black ball in a final often described as one of the sport's greatest. Taylor is also well known for his sense of humour and his trademark over-sized glasses. Taylor turned professional in 1972 and made his world championship debut in 1973, narrowly losing to Cliff Thorburn in the first round. After world semi-final losses in 1975 and 1977, Taylor reached his first major final - the World Championship - in 1979, but lost 24-16 to debutant Terry Griffiths. Having reached the semi final of the World Championships in 1984, losing to Steve Davis, Taylor was playing very well as he began the 1984-85 season. In September, however, he was devastated by the sudden death of his mother, which caused him to withdraw from the Jameson International. His first ranking event win came later in 1984, when he won the Rothmans Grand Prix by beating Cliff Thorburn 10-2 in the final. Later that season he reached his second world final in 1985, where he faced Steve Davis, world number one, reigning world champion and the dominant player of the 1980s. Taylor trailed 8-0 after the first session, but bounced back to trail 7-9 and 15-17 and then level at 17-17. In an incredibly tense final frame, the score was 62-44 to Davis with only the brown, blue, pink and black still on the table. While Davis needed only the brown, Taylor needed all the colours. He potted a long brown, which he says is one of his best ever under pressure. A tricky blue and a difficult pink also went in, bringing the score to 62-59 to ensure that, for the first time ever, the title would be decided on the black ball. Product Description
This collection of meditations and poetry was assembled with a prayer to help people. This book tells of our personal struggles and how we overcame them. Our hearts' cries to our God as we worked through our trials is the heart and breath of this book. If someone can find help for their lives, then our efforts will not be in vain. All three of us had life-changing experiences. I (Lois Allen Maag) was healed of Alzheimers dementia; Karen Gibbs, my daughter, almost died during a surgery and she was my care giver; and Linda Spence, Allen's younger sister, is a widow and had to learn how to cope and support herself. Our prayer goes with this book that people will be helped as they read. We are real people and these are real events in our lives. ... Read more

Product Description
You've been hurt. Really hurt. You pick at your hurt like an open wound and it festers into bitterness and anger. But the anger hurts, too. So you feel worse and worse and worse. Meet the Beebes: Darrell, Sherri, Jeremy and Jadie, a family that truly know what hurt is all about. When they moved to the Pacific Islands, the Beebes had their own idea of the story they would one day write about their sojourn there. That story certainly did not include terror, trauma and abuse. Yet on a balmy tropical evening, exactly those horrors overtook them in one nightmarish rush. But this book is not simply the story of a night of terror. It is the real-life story of one family's journey through that terror to a place of peace. How? By using the hidden power of forgiveness. Forgiveness, the remedy for life after trauma. Follow the Beebes as they discover God's perfect antidote to hurt, anger, bitterness and fear. Learn how to bring this healing elixir into your life. If you have ever been hurt ... If you've ever asked where was God when you were hurting... If you want to heal and get on with your life... This book is for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Inspiration
Are you struggling with painful experiences in your past? Are you mired in bitterness and feeling imprisoned by the inability to truly forgive someone who has wronged you?If you or someone you love is stuck in this situation, you need to read this book. This is a story of God's victory through tragedy.Darkness At Dawn explains that God does not cause bad things to happen to good people, but demonstrates that when they do happen He will work through them to bring news of forgiveness, healing, and hope to a lost and dying world. This book helped me understand the destructive power that bitterness and withholding forgiveness can have in my life, and the importance of truly forgiving. I'll be buying a couple more copies to give to folks who need the comfort and inspiration that this book provides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five viewpoints, five stories, five roads to healing, all very different
Life hurts. One can either let it fester, or go for the healing process. "Darkness at Dawn" is the horrific story of the Beebe family. One nightmare of a night, and they all speak of how it all went down, and the aftermath of the trauma. Five viewpoints, five stories, five roads to healing, all very different, each from the next despite the common bond of family that unites them. "Darkness at Dawn" is of interest to any reader who wants to see that time can heal all wounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!
I read this book because I was considering using it in a college level diversity issues class that I teach for teachers and those preparing to be teachers. Once I read it, I knew that I would have to use it; I couldn't put it down! It was like a great novel. Hankins reminded me of the importance of truly listening to students and knowing them. That is an important message for teachers at any level. Plus her meditations on journal writings as data for qualiative research are fascinating. I recommend this book for anyone who could use a little inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Can't Be Taught
Any teacher, from pre-service to veteran, would be greatly served by reading this book.

The marks of a great teacher are those that cannot be taught in even the best of teacher ed programs. These are the qualities of compassion, empathy, and sincere love for one's students. The author possesses these qualities; she shares them with the reader time and time again in the text.

The book is part reflection, part narrative. Through reflection/narrative, we enter into the lives of several first graders. At times, the horror of what children live through is overwhelming. At other times, Ms. Hankins' tender and creative methods of teaching the children are what leaps from the page (you find yourself wondering if you would ever have been able to think of such ingenious strategies for soothing the troubled 6 year old).

What stands out, though, is not the heartbreaking stories (although they are unforgettable), but how Ms. Hankins was able to better inform her teaching, and therefore better serve her students, by reflecting on the everyday occurrences in the classroom. Highly recommended book. ... Read more
