She was famous for making about nudist camps, often running into problems with censors as a result: "Nude on the Moon," in which astronauts are greeted by naked women with pipe-cleaner antennas poking out of their bouffant hairdos, was banned in New York State. The censor board at the time allowed only films about nudist colonies, turning aside her argument that it was about a nudist camp on the moon. In her next phase, she made sexual melodramas in which women were depicted as tragic heroines being exploited by men. There was nudity and plenty of violence against women but no explicit sex. In the grainy black-and-white pictures, which included titles like "A Taste of Flesh," she defined a quirky personal style: bizarre cutaways to ashtrays, lamps and squirrels; suggestive lesbian subplots and gratuitous nudity and violence.

Not only did Wishman write, direct, produce, cast, and edit all her films, she was probably the only woman at the time whose work managed to be so prolific and groundbreaking. Doris Wishman's career began during the heyday of the early Sixties "nudie" films that featured minimal plots (if any) and wholesome folks playing volleyball or engaging in other in-the-buff good times. However, with her second film, the sublimely goofy Nudes on the Moon Double Agent 73 in John Waters' Serial Mom Now living in Coral Gables, Florida, Wishman was rediscovered by Bostonian Michael Bowen a few years ago. Bowen is now working on the filmmaker's biography and has been touring the United States with Wishman, showing restored prints of her classics Bad Girls Go to Hell and Double Agent 73 (named for the freakishly endowed 73"-bosomed Chesty Morgan).

Not too many folks will report on this, and I'd shit a brick if the MPAA actually recognized her during their annual Hollywood Dead Folks tribute at the Oscars, so what better place than retroCRUSH to salute her fantastic work? It's no secret that the world of film is a tough one for a woman to thrive in as a director, but to make as many movies as Doris had in the exploitation genre is even more amazing. When you mention trash film greats like Herschell Gordon Lewis, John Waters, and Ed Wood, she's right there with them. How could you not love a lady, old enough to be your great grandma, who was still turning out classics like DILDO HEAVEN as late as last year? Doris featured the famous stripper Blaze Starr in the 1960 nudist classic, BLAZE STARR GOES WILD, followed by other nudie flix like DIARY OF A NUDIST, NUDE ON THE MOON, and GENTELEMEN PREFER NATURE GIRLS. In a world where video and easily available porn was non-existent, Wishman was there to fill the need. But it was her work with the outrageously endowed Chesty Morgan that brought Wishman her greatest success.
