She almost stole the show in the Ziegfield Follies of 1909 and returned as a star to vaudeville, abandoning blackface but continuing in the African-American style. She helped popularize songs of black composers such as Eubie Blake and was also known for her racy songs. She enjoyed great success on tour to England in 1922 and went on to appear in several stage and movie musicals, but was especially known as a nightclub torch singer. In her later years she billed herself as "The Last of the Red-Hot Mamas.'

    Extractions: Presents The Last of the Red Hot Mamas About Sophie Tucker Born Sophie (or Sonia) Kalish-Abuza on January 13, 1884 in transit between Russia and Poland. A legendary performer of generous proportions, brassy and dynamic, who claimed to be "The Last of the Red Hot Mamas." The daughter of Russian parents, Sophie was taken to the USA when she was three years old. By the time she was 10 years old, Sophie was a singing waitress in her father’s cafe in Hartford, CT, and in 1906 she moved to New York to work at the Cafe Monopole, the German Village Cafe, and then in burlesque, vaudeville, and cabaret. Sometimes, because of her plain appearance she was persuaded to work in blackface, and made a reputation as a "Coon-Shouter" in the ragtime era. After a teenage marriage failed (as did two later marriages), she added "er" to her ex-husband’s name of "Tuck" to create her new stage name. In 1909 she played a small, but telling part in the Ziegfeld Follies. By 1911 she was a headliner, and was able to drop the dreaded blackface for good. In the same year she made her first recording of the song which was to become her life-long theme, forever associated with her: Some of These Days was written by composer-pianist Shelton Brooks, who also wrote The Darktown Strutters Ball . Other hits around this time were , and Knock Wood . When jazz music became the new craze during World War I, Tucker became known as "The Queen of Jazz" and toured with the band "Sophie Tucker and Her Five Kings of Syncopation."

Tucker loved Paris, and she loved telling jokes dripping with double-entendre. Proud of her independence, but lamenting that she never met a man who could keep up with her, Tucker seemed only too aware of the price that came with being her own woman. She referred to her three ex-husbands as "Winken, Blinken and Nod." She explained how she always called every boyfriend Ernie so, in case she called out a man's name in a moment of high passion, she wouldn't call out the wrong name.

But unlike Mae, Sophie was considered unattractive. Audiences laughed at Sophie rather than with her and she capitalized on it. Not surprisingly, then, she'd been dismissed as playing up a stereotype - the fat old woman who foolishly fancies herself sexy. MARION DAVIES made her Broadway debut at age sixteen in a chorus line. She danced in review and musicals and also modeled. Her only Ziegfeld shows were the 1916 Follies and Miss 1917. Later in 1917 she made her screen debut. Davies met newspaper publisher and heir William Randolph Hearst while she was in the Follies. BERT SAVOY and Joe Brennan appeared in 48 performances of Miss 1917. Bert was outrageously effeminate both onstage and off. He referred to men as "she" and camped it up at every opportunity. His drag persona was a hip-swaying gossip who dished about herself and the sordid exploits of her friend "Margie" while the dapper Jay Brennan (himself a former female impersonator) listened. Mae West borrowed her famous hip-swaying walk from Savoy, and a few impersonators copied his act so thoroughly that Savoy had to take legal action to protect his routines.

I'm doing a tribute to Sophie Tucker at the Port Mansion Theatre in St. Catharines. Sophie was a very modern woman, she sang great songs, she had a great sense of humour and was a true survivor. Chris Mounteer is the fabulous piano player, who also plays Teddy Shapiro, Sophie's long-time accompanist. We do shows every night Tuesday - Saturday at 8:00 pm, and Sundays at 2:30 pm.
