Amid the speculation, there has been little consideration of whether other actors might step into the roles, yet the series itself is doing a jokey take on just that option, in a soon-to-be filmed episode featuring comedian Gary Shandling as Mulder and Duchovnys real life wife as Scully. "Im doing an X-FILES episode in which I get to make out with Téa Leoni, David Duchovnys wifeI think you see my ploy," says Shandling, who claims that work usually interferes with his romantic life. "Im doing that in the middle of March, in which I play the Mulder character in an X-FILES film version, and David comes to see if its being depicted accurately. I play him, and Téa Leoni plays Scully, and I make out with her. Theyre all good friends of mine," adds the actor, who plays the sort of character in his upcoming movie, WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM?, that would excite Mulders interest: an alien come to Earth to procreate with a human woman. Duchovny, of course, had fun spoofing himself on Shandlings THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW. The running gag was that Duchovny played himself as overtly attracted to Sanders ("You look good. You been working out?"), speaking in hushed tones on the telephone so that his wife would not overhear. Will any of that homoerotic tension spill over into the X-FILES episode. "Certainly not for me," quips Shandling. "There may be for David."

Extractions: Welcome to the world of bizzaro crossovers. How did two such different shows bump into each other? The Andy Griffith Show was the story of the ordinary small North Carolina town of Mayberry and its sheriff. It's Gary Shandling's Show was the story of a stand up comic who was aware that he was living in a sitcom. Gary would talk to the audience and tweak television conventions. At one point, for example, Gary wanted to move the plot along and he didn't want to wait through weeks of developement. So he made time pass in TV fashion. How'd he do that? There was an uncut ham sitting on the counter. Gary picked it up, put it away and replaced it with an almost utterly devoured ham saying, "It's a week later." And instantly it was! Come to think of it, that bizarre and endearing love of sitcoms is what caused the crossover. In one episode of Gary's show, he discovered he had a new neighbor in the form of former Mayberry resident Howard Sprague. Now being such an off-kilter show, Gary was aware of Howard from the Andy Griffith Show but Howard was there as the character, not as the actor who played him. Given the self aware style of the show it played as somehow reasonable.

After earning a degree in marketing at the University of Arizona Shandling head out to Los Angeles in search of the comedy circuit. He soon made a real name for himself as a highly regarded writer for such renowned 1970’s sitcoms as "Sanford and Son "and ‘Welcome Back, Kotter. In 1975, seeking to expand his comedic voice, Shandling made his stand-up debut at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles. In the comedy club scene, he happened to spark the interest of Joan Rivers, who brought him to the attention of Johnny Carson and in 1981, Shandling made his first appearance on "The Tonight Show", going on to serve as the show’s guest host on numerous occasions. From 1986 to 1990, in addition to frequent appearances on "The Tonight Show, "Shandling was the star and executive producer of the CabIeACE Award-winning series "It’s Garry Shandling’s Show" and served as host of the Grammy Awards in 1990 and 1991. Shandling credits his experience of filling in for Johnny Carson as the genesis of the THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW. "When I was hosting the ‘The Tonight Show ‘I got an intimate look at how talk shows work backstage," Shandling says. "I realized that this was a world no one had really explored yet. I wanted to take an honest look at the very wide difference between the way a talk-show host acts on the air and what he or she is truly like."

Man, I can't believe a great show like this hasn't been on the list here earlier, but some half-season piece of garbage like Aliens in the Family is. Genuinely funny throughout its run. I can cite example after example of this show's hilarity. One example: When some fat kid who was a regular on the show was taking a bath and Garry walked past him. Garry turned to the camera, said "In Europe, you're able to see him nude, while in America, you're not" or something to that effect. He then said "God bless America". If making fun of fat, naked, kids taking baths isn't funny, I don't know what is. It's Garry Shandling never jumped. The episode where they turned Grant Schumacher's first potential sexual experience into a musical is a top 10 show of all time. Even the Mayor of Los Angeles was involved in Grant's tussle with his sexuality. This show was better and more genuine than Larry Sanders.
