Computing Science, Univ. of Alberta, 1982; M.Sc. Computing Science, Simon Fraser Univ., 1985; Ph.D. Cognitive Science/Artificial Intelligence, Univ. of Edinburgh, 1989. Laboratory Affiliations: Natural Language and Logic and Functional Programming Laboratory. Current Research: Primary research encompasses both theoretical and applied computational linguistics, logic programming and functional programming languages. Much of the ongoing research is focused on unification-based grammar formalisms, specifically on parsing, the structure of the lexicon and the use of inheritance in these formalisms. There is a great deal of interest in unification-based grammars for natural language analysis and generation since they are highly declarative and since they allow the interaction of different forms of information (e.g. syntactic, semantic). One such formalism is Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG). A grammar development system and parser for HPSG has been developed and is currently being used by researchers at various universities. The system also forms the basis of a natural language interface to a statistical database which is being developed in a project associated with the Natural Language Lab. Another area of active research is related to logic grammars, particularly Static Discontinuity Grammars (SDGs). These grammars allow nonlocal relationships to be stated succinctly in terms of sets of definite clause grammar rules. Formal properties of SDGs, different parsing techniques and various applications are currently being examined in projects associated with the Logic Programming Lab. One specific application involves the use of SDGs to capture linguistic constraints in providing an implementation of a Government and Binding Theory grammar for a fragment of a natural language.
