Extractions: I was witness to one of the most amazing games of football ever last Saturday, well at least in this part of the world. Namely, the crunch Division 1B meeting of Abbeyside and Tramore Rangers in 'The Village' last Saturday afternoon. With an early kick-off to accommodate Arsenal v Chelsea (letters of thanks are winging their way from Highbury and Stamford Bridge as you read this), the game looked like a relegation dogfight in the opening 45 minutes with barely a shot on target from either side. However, the 0-0 half-time scoreline was quickly erased as the match finished up 6-6! Referee Jimmy McGrath had never before been involved in a match with more than 10 goals in it - never mind TWELVE all in one half (an average of a goal every 3.75 minutes) and none of them from the penalty spot. Surely some sort of record, I'd have thought.

Extractions: CHECKERS CHATTER CHATTER Ring-Road RelayA Great Success B Oct/Nov 2001 It was Don Mitchell who first discovered the format for this type of relay race while vacationing in Hawaii in 1979. It was a point-to-point 100K from sea coast, up over a 7,000' pass, and down the other side. His club, the Buffalo Philharmonic, staged the race in Delaware Park for the two years. It was set up as an all-comers event where teams were organized at registration. The intent was to balance the talent so that all the teams had an equal chance of winning. The first three runners on each team ran a total of 4 laps, and the anchor ran 5. The event was 17 laps, or approximately 30 miles. In 1990 Greater Buffalo Track Club resurrected the concept while reducing the laps run by each runner to 2. It was held in mid-April. It lasted two years, growing to over 100 teams. Last yearTom Donnelly and Brenda Litzinger brought it back once again. Their purpose was to develop a race that would raise awareness of the Messinger Woods organization. Messinger Woods is a not-for-profit corporation designed to achieve excellence in the field of Wildlife Rehabilitation, caring for sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife with the ultimate goal of release. The main goal is the reintroduction of "patients" back into the wild. The people at Messinger Woods are licensed, tested and trained to care for wild creatures.

Steens Mountain Arborglyphs Research, Photos and Text by: Carol Pedersen This page will take you on a trip back in time to when the high desert of Steens Mountain was sheep country. From the late 1800s until 1934 the Steens was open summer range land to over 100,000 sheep each year, about 2000 per herd, cared for by the mainly Basque and Irish herders and their camp tenders. In 1934 the Taylor Grazing Act changed all that as it required sheep owners to also own land. Until that time the independent or itinerant "outfits", which were usually partnerships, used public land for summer range and kept their herds on the desert in the winter buying supplemental winter feed from local ranchers.
