I often challenge clients to grow, to overcome fear and stagnant design habits. It can be helpful to envision something completely new, even outrageous, or a radically different arrangement. From there, we can tone it down, adjust it to tastes, lifestyle and budget and how the changes affect space and interact with the light. Architecture taught me how to organize spaces and forms logically and connect them to function as a body. My curiosity for human nature, for the way people use interior spaces and how these interior spaces impact the senses led me to pursue a Masters in Interior design at Cornell University's Design and Environmental Analysis program. My education broadened my knowledge of human perception and environment response. It also strengthened my understanding of the interaction between interior and exterior. I make architectural decisions-where to locate the windows, using angular or curvilinear forms and spaces for example-from a more informed standpoint where I consider issues like function or surroundings, even the orientation of the sun and weather conditions. Having both disciplines allows me to take projects from start to finish: the design, space planning and final furnishings. That can be very convenient for clients, too; they work with one person who really gets to know their sensibility.

The architect of the Taj Mahal was Ustad Ahmad, a native of Lahore who was awarded the title of "Nadir-ul Asr" (Wonder of the Age) by Shah Jahan. Like a jewel, the Taj sparkles in moonlight when the semi-precious stones inlaid into the white marble on the main mausoleum catch the glow of the moon. The Taj is pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden when the moon shines. These changes, they say, depict the different moods of woman. Different people have different views of the Taj but it would be enough to say that the Taj has a life of its own that leaps out of marble, provided you understand that it is a monument of love. As an architectural masterpiece, nothing could be added or substracted from it.

He was a puzzle to the best of batsmen with his amazing bag of tricks. Though in his Ranji Trophy career that followed, he stuck largely to left arm orthodox spin, he unleashed a seemingly infinite variety of deliveries on unsuspecting batsmen in the Rohinton Baria tournament. His arsenal included the left arm spinner’s stock delivery which left the right hand batsman, a chinaman which he bowled using his wrist, a googly from the back of the hand, and both these deliveries with a finger spin action. He fooled batsmen with his changes of grip and action, as they misread ball after ball, until they were bowled, caught, lbw or stumped, looking rather foolish in the process. One famous victim was Sunil Gavaskar playing for Bombay University in 1970. The little master in the making once shouted to his partner Ramesh Nagdev at the bowler’s end that he could read Mumtaz’s wrong ‘un, only to be bowled neck and crop the very next ball, shouldering arms to one that came in sharply. To add insult to injury, the bowler stood there grinning wickedly at him. Wicket-keepers were not immune to the Mumtaz magic either. They had to resort to secret signals to anticipate what would come their way when he was in midseason form, though Mumtaz’s old mate P Krishnamurti read him better than most.

Purchased at auction in 1922 for the account of the Aga Khan, her sales price of 9100 guineas represented the highest price given at an English sale since the great filly Sceptre went throught the ring 22 years earlier. The Bloodstock Breeders Review, in reviewing the sale described Mumtaz Mahal as, "Wonderful, as near to perfection as imagination can conceive" She was compared to her father, The Tetrarch, dubbed "The Spotted Wonder" for the unusual spots on his grey coat. He was sensational, a wonder horse, but succumbed to injury after winning all seven of his races, before he could prove his ability to stay the classics. It was the Tetrarch that gave Mumtaz Mahal her gray coat and at least some of her sensational speed. Most of the present-day grey horses trace directly to Mumtaz Mahal and/or her sire, The Tetrarch. So, when you see a fast gray, you might want to take a moment and pay homage to these two. Mumty's mother was the chestnut Lady Josephine a filly of very high class at age 2 but who could not stay further than 5 furlongs. Lady Josephine's sire Sundridge was said to be the fastest horse of his day and an influence for high speed in the British Isles. Josephine's mother was Americus Girl, product of a mating of the fast imported American horse, Americus, and an English dam. Lady Josephine was to have an indelible influence on the breed primarily through Mumtaz Mahal but secondarily thru her daughter Lady Juror who foaled Fair Trial, who in his time was one of the primary sources of high-class speed around the world.

It was only after the Tajmahal had been built that her mortal remains were transferred to her new abode.

For the first time in ages, the sheek kebabs arrived on a sizzler and they were huge, nay, massive and were expertly spiced giving a delicate flavour. The onion bhajis were two large flat disks with an OK texture but a bland taste. Fortunately, the bright orange splatter (this seems to be becoming the most popular colour) lifted their flavour up a couple of levels. For the third curry in a row, we were asked if we wanted to wait a while for our main dishes (we reckon someone somewhere has been offering cheap customer care courses!). Despite the size of the starters, we opted to press on. The Chicken Pathia was one of the best yet - a rich, thick sauce crammed full of fruit and veg and chicken. With the Chicken Bhuna, the chicken pieces were generally too large and flavourless but the tasty sauce want a long way to compensate. Asbestos mouthed PhilS chose the Chicken Chilli Massalla. Again the chunks of meat were a bit cumbersome. Through the flames emanating from his mouth, he described it as "Fairly hot, but not too hot to ruin the flavour. Quite a few whole chillies, but luckily they weren't too hot". The nans were exceptionally good. Both of the cheese variety were, unusually, discernibly cheesy and, as well as the plain nan, had a good fluffy texture. Despite its downmarket location (how else would you describe an area around the corner from where both SteveB and IanD have once lived!), the Mumtaz was quite luxurious. Once again, the waiters were very friendly (been on that course) - every one of them made a point of asking if we required popadoms and popped up at least once during the meal to enquire if we were enjoying it. Everything was huge - starters, main dishes and nans. The draught beer was cheap so the final bill including the tip was very reasonable. It may look like one of them trendy places but The Mumtaz proves that you can have all that and still provide good food at reasonable prices.
