Extractions: Swan Lake Saturday June 9, 2001 This completely original production was Mr. Wilcoxs first full-length ballet, choreographed in 1982 as Long Beach Ballet Arts Centers 2 nd annual school production. The original Grimms tale was adapted to accommodate a large cast and the musical score is a compilation of beautiful yet relatively unknown classical music. The creation of this ballet was a challenging yet rewarding endeavor, as witness to the final version certainly proves. Lively festive dances fill the first tableaux, with subsequent scenes developing the suspense and story. The characters of Hansel and Gretel, their mother and father and the witch are all vividly portrayed in the music as well as the choreography. Even the town mayor has his own musical theme. Click on photo for larger version. The Story Villagers in a small German town are practicing dances and setting up decorations for a big festival. Two of the children of the village- Hansel and Gretel are very poor and are always ready to snatch up unattended bits of cake or candy. Extractions: Natalie MacMaster , Jimmy Rankin and Bruce Guthro led a virtual Nova Scotia sweep of this year's East Coast Music Awards , which aired February 3 on CBC. After coming second last year to The Fables, fiddler MacMaster finally received the fan-voted Entertainer of the Year Award . "Thank you to God for the gift of music!" she enthused. Guthro and Rankin tied for top honors with three awards apiece. "I feel great," smiled Guthro, who nabbed pop artist of the year, male artist of the year, and album of the year ("Guthro"). Jimmy Rankin won country artist of the year as well as single of the year and songwriter of the year (together with friend Gordie Sampson for "Followed Her Around"). "This means a lot to me," said Rankin, who embarked on a solo career in 2001 after his family group, the Rankins, disbanded and brother John Morris Rankin died in a car accident. Rankin, Guthro, MacMaster and their Nova Scotia compatriots picked up 20 of the nights 23 prizes; the home crowd in the audience at Saint John, N.B. had to be satisfied with wins for blues (high-energy group Glamour Puss) and francophone (Acadian group Bois-Joli), while Newfoundland's Ennis Sisters, who nabbed group of the year, were the sole representatives from their province. Other major winners included fiddler Kendra MacGillivray for female artist of the year and rock group Crush for new artist of the year.
